A leadoff HR by Jose Cruz didn't hold up, and the Pirates wore us down 4-3. I hate losing games with the winning run on base.

Tommy John continues to be our salvation. 1-0, 4 hit shutout. Only run came on McRae & McCarver hitting doubles together.

6-9. The real life Phils were 10-5, unaware of the train wreck ahead.

Traded Luzinski for Yaz and Bill Lee. If I'm not going to win, I might as well draw fans. Dumped Billy Champion to the Cubs for Larry Gura. Thinking of the future...

Cut a late deal with the Twins. Ditched Don Money, Ken Reynolds, and Dave Downs for Dave LaRoche and Bill Campbell.

A good win today...3-1 at the Stick. Fryman gave ups 2 hits over 6 innings and Hiller mopped up. Left a dozen guys win base...that **** has to stop.

April 27...Steve Stone shuts the Phils out 2-0 at the Stick. Geez...Stone? Time to reshuffle the old batting order.

April 28. A late error lets in the go ahead run and we fall to SD 3-2. Grrrrrrrrr....

I know it's a rebuilding project and the 72 Phillies were terrible in real life.

Still, losing to the 1972 Padres is pretty rough ...

I felt that one.

You have made so many trades that is it really the '72 Phillies? I think a rebuilding project doesn't mean trading the majority of the roster, but just getting some key players to go with the core group and come up with a winner. How does that sound?

It doesn't sound like a successful strategy for the long term. The 72 Phils finally finish their transformation in real life in 1980. By that point Carlton, Boone Bowa, Schmidt, & Luzinski are the only remnants of 72. The team is on its fourth manager since then as well.

While I appreciate your input, I feel that my approach is building a much more solid core more quickly. I'm building a strong base of prospects with the hope of launching a dynasty. Copping Hough, Flanagan, Forsch, and Sutter leaves me with a far better core of young pitching. My theory—work with what you have and take any chance to better the team. Yes, these are the 72 Phils. By 76, I want to be in the series...not losing the first round of the playoffs three times in a row.

After taking a Memorial Day break

and dealing with basement clean-up, I got back to my Phils. Second pace and 2 over .500 is far from what I expected. The boys have been giving it their all.

McCarver started being a pain in the backside, so I traded him for young Johnny Wockenfuss and Lenny Randle, giving up highly cough, cough prized cough cough prospect Fred Andrews as well.

Gamble & McRae hit the DL for a month each within days of each other...but Tommy Hutton filled in well. Jerry Martin covered well for Gamble as well.

So it was the AS break, and I needed a blockbuster...Traded Oscar Gamble to the Reds for...Dave Concepcion, George Foster, Rawly Eastwick, and Pete Hamm. Followed it upon by sending Hamm and 2 minor leaguers to the Red Sox for Rick Miller. Ditched Belanger's salary (since I had Dave C) for Jerry DaVanon.

Jim Slaton wnet to the DL with a UCL tear. Del Unser...6 weeks gone with a broken wrist. Had to bring up youngsters Bob Forsch and Jose Cruz. Foster will be starting in CF...

As the Trade Deadline hit, I was 49-54...21 1/2 GB. I've got to win 10 of 59 to match...

August 5th found us at 55-54 after winning 6 in a row. Second place!

Del Unser returned on Roster Expansion Day. 68-64...17 GB the Pirates, who have lightning in a bottle...heck, Pops might win a Triple Crown for them.

Lefty continues to be a solid 15-6, leading the league in K's. A far cry from 27-10. Davey Lopes has been a nice surprise, despite his crappy OBP he leads the league with 61 SB.

Ove on the AL side, the Royals and A's are dueling for 1st in the West. The Orioles are cruising in the East, up by 11 1/2 over the Yankees. The Tigers, Indians, and Ranges are abominable. None can match the futility of the Braves over in the Senior Circuit though...51-98 isn't going to please anyone in Georgia.

The Phils have been surging. We're now 80-68, but the Pirates magic # is 3. The Dodgers and Reds are dogfighting in the West, separated by 1/2 game.

A doubleheader sweep on the 26th of September left us eliminated still, but only 8 1/2 back. The 59-103 real life ending seems like a bad dream.

Stargell has slumped, and will not win the Triple Crown.

Yaz comes back with just a few days to play. Johnny Work has done a fine job filling in, hitting .304 and fielding acceptably.
