Spritze Negro League Database Bug Reports

I have noticed that the sources are often differing on negro league player names. This can result in duplicate players.

Jose Acosta could be in the database twice once with the accent ' over the e and once without.

Buddy Armour could be in under his nickname as well as his given name.

If you come across these please post them here so I can clean them up. I'd like to have the negro league players ready for OOTP18 in as good a condition as possible.

Thanks

is this a separate data base, or included in your high school one? i saw a link to HS database on another thread ... downloaded a version of that a few weeks ago - obviously need to get a newer version if these are to be included ... is it the .odb or .csv file we need to look at for name variations?

I am changing the compilation process as it did create a too large database. I am splitting it into 3 databases (it used to be two).

FYI: I have been using the database and notice Babe Ruth only had 385 career HR's which is still the most. The reason for this is that adding Josh Gibson, Mule Suttles, Turkey Stearns and the other negro players sucks up many of the available HR's. The league totals are not out of line.

You well know how OOTP works, off the totals modifiers, so bring in more good players, and the stats of those players will drop to keep the total.

When I used your database, because there were so many other good players, I played with 8 more teams than required. So the pre 1960's I had 24 teams running, and then added teams when they came in after that, so my modern era ending would be 38 teams.
The individual stats for players tended to turn out much better .

Give that a shot. Play out the 1920's with 8 more teams and see if Ruth gets closer to 700 hr and the new negro league players put up more exacting stats.
As I say I tested a few things long ago and found 8 additional teams to be about the optimal number.

Also, becuase of how pitching stats get imported. Each year I would take who should be the 4-5 best starting pitchers, and gave them a 7-10 point rise in GB%. A 55 to 65 for example. That was enough to keep Cy Young, Mathewson, Grove or whatnot near the top of the list- otherwise (with so many more pitchers, and often real high rated guys who played only a few years but become great in OOTP engine) the star pitchers were about 70% as effective as real life.
That shift too made a big difference.

Anyway, just passing that along to you in case any of it could be of use to you.
Cheers

When not testing the OOTP defaults I start with 32 teams in 1901 and add 16 more in 1940. The 32 are the current MLB 30 plus the Havana Sugar Kings and the Mexico City Red Devils. In 1940 I add 8 Negro League teams and the PCL. With the additional new players I may move up expansion to 1930.

I will try the pitcher adjustment next go round.

back to the dupilcate players:

in the 1901 draft - i found these players (possibly more, but only looked at pitchers and catchers) are duplicated (with the accent ' .....)

Candido Fontantals
R. Mendez
Jose Munos
Luis Padron
Gonzalo Sanchez
Juan Viola
Regino Garcia
Francisco Moran

think i spell those correct, but when i jotted down the names my handwritting left a lot to be desired, and i'm not at the game comuter to double check right now.

question: in the master csv Albert Toney is shown as starting in 1901. He isn't in this draft. Possibly 1902 or ??? . Must be somewhere as he's in the .csv file. Just wondering. Great work. Loving this db so far.

Changed about 900 names with accented letters to remove the accents.

Next I need to remove the duplicates that change made (653 of them) and move the stats from the accented player to the unaccented one.

NICE! will wait for the updated files, as i'm just a few days before the draft and the updated files/stats will help avoid later editing. Suppose this will take a few days before the db is updated and made available? Thanks for your work.

I just added a stats cap of a bit over 400 IP in a year for each Pitcher in any year >1900. Pre-1901 anything goes.

This was needed due to the way BBref stores its pitching stats which is like a squid in a mirror. There really aren't two of them.

It seems Cy Youngs historical stats are wrong, at least going back before 1901.
