Week 1

Current Week: 2-4 (2-4 2 GB 4th)
Next Week: 3 @ Annapolis, 3 vs Richmond
Power Ranking: 12

Opening Day Roster - Norfolk Cavaliers

Game 1: Opening Day 2014
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 0
Don Sweetapple (0-1) gave it all he got, going 7.2 innings and allowing 3 runs, but the Cavaliers bats had nothing. Only able to manage 2 hits on the day, two singles one by Ron Adler and one by Chris Shopland. Not a good feeling/sign to be shut-out on opening day...

Game 2:
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 4 (13 innings)
Carlos Mateo gave the Cav's another solid start, giving up 3 runs over 6.1 innings, and the bullpen combination, of Dalton Whitaker, Carlos Rodriquez and Javier Castro (1-0), held the Tourists scoreless over the last 6.2 innings. Joe Payne lead the offense with 3 hits, a HR (1) and 2 RBI, and Ron Adler added 2 hits of his own.

Game 3:
Ocean City 11, Norfolk 5
Karl Armstrong (0-1) got roughed up, only throwing 2.1 innings and giving up 7 runs (4 ER) on 8 hits. Ron Harris also got roughed up giving up 4 runs (2 ER) in 2 innings of relief. The offense was lead by Pablo Freitas with 2 hits, including a HR and Joe Payne who added 2 hits, a double and a triple.

Game 4:
Ellicott City 3, Norfolk 1
Tsuneo Sato (0-1) threw 7 strong innings only giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, but the offense, once again, was flat. Dalton Whitaker threw 2 strong innings of relief striking out 5. Tony Soto had 3 hits, all singles, for the Cavaliers.

Game 5:
Ellicott City 5, Norfolk 4
Geoffrey Bayles (0-1) threw 6.2 innings, which is a good sign, since I do question his stamina, but gave up 5 runs on 10 hits. The Cav's had a 4 run 3rd, 3 of those runs are in thanks to a HR (1) by Jose Rodriquez. Mark Morris added 2 hits for a struggling offense.

Game 6:
Ellicott City 1, Norfolk 4
Norfolk was able to salvage one game of the series thanks to a strong performance by Don Sweetapple (1-1). Sweetapple went 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits and he only threw 85 pitches. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a perfect 9th for the save (1). The offense is still sluggish only getting 6 hits, but they were able to get 4 runs. Jesus Rivera and Ron Alder each had 2 hits.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Don Perkins (New Castle Colonials) 8-17 2 HR 5 RBI
MarVa: Rafael Martinez (Washington Senators) 9-22 3 HR 4 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Milton Brewers (136.6)
2) Ocean City Tourists (132.6)
3) Richmond Cardinals (124.0)
4) Baltimore Barons (124.0)
5) Milford Clippers (123.0)
12) Norfolk Cavaliers (59.0)

GM Notes: The opening day roster got a little messed up, and I didn't noticed it till day 2. That is why the team pic doesn't match the team I said I was starting out with, lol... In only ONE game this week were we able to get more than 6 hits and that game went 13 innings. We recorded a season high 11 hits that game. 4 of the 6 games we got exactly 6 hits... We miss Mauro Candelaria (1-2 more weeks) and Jacob Chaney (4 more days).

Week 2

Current Week: 2-4 (4-8 2.5 GB 4th)
Next Week: 3 @ Washington, 3 vs Baltimore
Power Ranking: 15
Fan Interest: 56
Owners Mood: Good

Game 7
Norfolk 6, Annapolis 7 (12 innings)
Carlos Mateo threw 6 decent innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs and took the ND. Javier Castro got roughed up in his 3rd inning of work (1-1) giving up 3 runs, which included a 3-run walkoff blast. Ron Alder lead the offense with a 3-5 day, including his first HR. Brian Cline also added a HR (1).

Game 8
Norfolk 1, Annapolis 4
Karl Armstrong (0-2) threw an 8 inning complete game, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, but the offense couldn't give him any support only getting 4 hits. Ron Alder hit a solo HR (2).

Game 9
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 6
Tsuneo Sato (0-2) got roughed up, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits, 3 of which went over the fence. The offense was able to bang out 10 hits, but could only score 2 runs leaving 8 men on. Pablo Freitas was a HR shy of the cycle, getting 3 hits and knocking in 2.

Transaction News: Jacob Chaney was activated from the 15-day DL and placed on the active roster. Julio Romero was sent down to AAA Yokohama to get some more swings in, for the season Romero was hitting .111-0-0 (2-18 6 K's)

Game 10
Richmond 2, Norfolk 3
Geoffrey Bayles had a solid 5.1 inning outing, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, but left with the score tied at 2. Carlos Rodriquez (1-0) threw a perfect 9th for the win. Jacob Chaney had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Joe Payne had the game winning, walk-off, single in the Bottom of the 9th.

Game 11
Richmond 5, Norfolk 3
Don Sweetapple (1-2) took the loss, getting hit around, 10 hits, in 7 innings, and allowing 5 runs. Pablo Freitas had 2 hits, including a HR (2) to lead the offense.

Game 12
Richmond 4, Norfolk 5
Carlos Mateo threw the 7.1 innings, giving up 1 run and 7 hits, but left the game tied. The Cavs stormed back with 4 in the bottom of the 8th to take a 4 run lead. Javier Castro threw the 1.0 inning for the win (2-1) and Carlos Rodriquez got the save (2). Castro and Rodriquez gave up 3 in the top of the 9th to almost blow the game. Chris Shopland lead the offense with 3 hits, including his first HR and RBI of the season. Pablo Freitas also added 2 hits.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jesus Serna (Milton Brewers) 6-12 4 HR 6 RBI
MarVa: John Bowles (Baltimore Barons) 8-19 2 HR 10 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Baltimore Barons (140.0)
2) Ocean City Tourists (133.6)
3) Dover Generals (114.8)
4) Newark Millers (108.0)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (108.0)
15) Norfolk Cavaliers (57.0)

GM Notes: This isn't quite the way I pictured my season starting off. The offense performed a little better this week than the first, but they are still the worst offense around. Ranking 8th (of 8) in Runs Scored, Batting Average (.209), On-Base Pct and HR's... The bullpen has been great posting a 2.31 ERA, but the starters aren't doing as well as I hoped, ranking 5th with a 4.68 ERA... Mauro Candelaria will be returning in 2 days, and will see about a week of Rehab time in AAA... Not going to do anything drastic yet, I have a young team and will let them work it out (hopefully), I mean the offense can't be this bad, can they??

Lineup News: Jesus Rivera is hitting 4-10 .100 on the season and will most likely get some bench and look to Pat Shelton, Brian Cline or Gilberto Ramos to get more AB's.

Week 3 - Transactions

** game got corrupt, lost a week... so week 3 had to be replayed. **

Lineup Moves: Mark Morris (.178 3 Errors )and Jesus Rivera (.100) were removed from the lineup. Taking their places are Gilberto Ramos and Brian Cline. Ramos will move to 1B, shifting Chris Shopland to 2B, and Cline will take over in LF, and Joe Payne will head to 3B.

Transactions: 39 year-old Chris Dean (3B) was traded to the Georgetown Sixteens for 25 year-old Howard Harper. Dean was out of options and as a last ditch effort we decided to shop him around... Harper will join Norfolk and Allen Britt will be sent to AAA to get some more playing time.
Dean: Contact 7/7, Gap 10/10, HR 5/5, Eye 11/11, Avoid K 11/11
Harper: Contact 7/7, Gap 13/13, HR 12/12, Eye 9/10, Avoid K 8/8

Lineup Moves: Brian Cline will be replaced in the lineup and in LF by Howard Harper. Harper is a Lefty which now gives up 6 lefties in our primary lineup.

Week 3 - Redo

Current Week: 3-3 (7-11 2.5 GB 3rd)
Next Week: 2 @ Wilmington, 2 @ Dover, 3 vs Chesapeake
Power Ranking: 15
Fan Interest: 56
Owners Mood: Good

Game 13
Norfolk 5, Washington 4
Karl Armstrong (1-2) go his first win of the season going 7 strong innings, giving up 4 runs (3 ER) on 8 hits, striking out 3. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a scoreless 9th for the save (3). Pablo Freitas lead the offense with 3 hits and Gilberto added 2 hits, including a HR (1), and drove in 2.

Transactions: Mauro Candelaria is off the disabled list and has been sent to Yokohama for a few reps. Expect him back with the team soon.

Game 14
Norfolk 4, Washington 2
Tsuneo Sato (1-2) followed Karl's strong performance with a solid 7 innings of his own. Giving up 8 hits and 2 runs, striking out 7. Carlos Rodriquez pitched the 9th for the save (4). Ron Alder had 2 hits, and Brian Cline hit a 2-run HR (2).

Game 15
Norfolk 2, Washington 7
Geoffrey Bayles (0-2) got hit hard in 4.2 innings, giving up 7 runs on 12 hits. And the offense went cold only getting 4 hits. Howard Harper had a triple and Joe Payne added a double.

Game 16
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 2
Don Sweetapple (1-3) threw 7.2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 11 hits, but again was the victim of a sluggish offense. Howard Harper (1) and Jacob Chaney (2) each hit solo-HR's... Last season the offense was getting Sweetapple 4.18 R/G so far this season 2.00.

Game 17
Baltimore 7, Norfolk 11
Carlos Mateo (1-0) got his first decision of the season going 7 innings (seems to be our pitchers magic number) allowing 5 runs (4 ER) on 10 hits, and benefited from our biggest offensive game of the season. Tony Soto tore it up with 5 hits, falling a HR shy of the cycle, and 4 RBI. Pablo Freitas added 2 hits, including a HR (3) and 2 RBI and Howard Harper HR for the 2nd consecutive game. (2)

Game 18
Baltimore 9, Norfolk 3 (12 innings)
Karl Armstrong (1-3) gave up 1 run over 7 innings on 8 hits, and the offense gave him no help. Only able to manage 6 singles, two by Jose Rodriquez.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Don White (Dover Generals) 13-27 2 HR 8 RBI
MarVa: Anthony Cunningham (Ocean City Tourists) 13-25 4 HR 12 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Baltimore Barons (135.0)
2) Ocean City Tourists (109.0)
3) Dover Generals (105.2)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (99.0)
5) Annapolis Admirals (109.2)
15) Norfolk Cavaliers (69.0)

GM Notes: Had a good week of pitching, but the team just isn't scoring runs. Mauro will be back with us next week and hopefully that will help get this team back on track. We have the talent to play better... The pitching staff is now #3 in runs against, the bullpen has the 2nd best ERA, and our defense is sluggish (.667 Def Eff). But our offense is 8th in Runs, Batting Avg and OBPCT. and 7th in HR's. Sad... I know we are better than this.

Week 4

Current Week: 3-4 (10-15 4 GB 3rd)
Next Week: 3 @ Ellicott City, 3 @ Washington
Power Ranking: 14
Fan Interest: 55 (-1)
Owners Mood: Good

Game 19
Norfolk 7, Wilmington 6
Tsueno Sato (2-2) threw 6 decent innings, giving up 3 runs (2 ER) on 6 hits. The bullpen almost gave it away giving up 3 in the bottom of the 9th, but the Cav's hung on to take the victory. Carlos Rodriquez got the save (5). The offense was lead by Tony Soto with 2 hits and Juan Rodriquez with 2 RBI.

Game 20
Norfolk 3, Wilmington 4
Geoffrey Bayles (0-3) pitched well but not good enough to get the win. He gave up 4 runs (3 ER) on 6 hits over 5.1 innings. Ron Alder had a solo-HR (3) and Gilberto Ramos added 2 hits.

Game 21
Norfolk 4, Dover 5
Don Sweetapple (1-4) threw 7 solid innings, but gave up 5 runs, which the way things are going is too many. Sweetapple gave up 7 hits, 5 runs and struck out 7. Ron Alder had 3 hits, and Joe Payne, Chris Shopland and Don Sweetapple each added 2. The Cav's left 8 runners on base.

** May **

Game 22
Norfolk 3, Dover 4
Carlos Mateo took the loss (1-1) only giving up 3 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings. The offense was lead by Jacob Chaney with 2 hits and Pablo Freitas had 2 RBI.

Game 23
Chesapeake 0, Norfolk 1 (10 innings)
It seems this offense just doesn't want to give the pitchers any runs, as Karl Armstrong pitched 8 shut out innings on 4 hits, but it was Carlos Rodriquez took the win (2-0) throwing 2 innings of 1 hit ball. Mauro Candelaria lead off the 10th with a double and scored 2 batters later on a Jacob Chaney SF.

Game 24
Chesapeake 11, Norfolk 9 (12 innings)
Tsuneo Sato gave up 6 runs (3 ER) over 5 innings on 7 hits. And no one out of the bullpen was overly stellar, as we gave up runs in the 11 and the 12. Carlos Rodriquez (2-1) took the loss throwing 1.2 innings and giving up 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. The offense blew up for 14 hits, lead by Pablo Freitas with 3 and 2 RBI, and 4 others with 2 a piece. The start of the game was Brian Cline hitting 2 HR's (4) including a tying 2-run shot in the bottom of the 11th.

Game 25
Chesapeake 3, Norfolk 4
Geoffrey Bayles threw 6 great innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits for the win (1-3). Dalton Whitaker had one of his worse outings of the season giving up 2 runs in 1.2 innings, but Elmer Hawkins and Javier Castro (1) closed out the game. Ron Alder, Chris Shopland and Tony Soto each had 2 hits.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Bruce Walker (Lewes Braves) 13-27 1 HR 6 RBI
MarVa: Howard Johns (Chesapeake Blue Crabs) 14-31 4 HR 8 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Ocean City Tourists (114.3)
2) Georgetown Sixteens (109.0)
3) Richmond Cardinals (108.8)
4) New Castle Colonials (105.8)
5) Baltimore Barons (102.0)
14) Norfolk Cavaliers (71.0)

GM Notes: Pitching is our bread and butter rating. Its exciting to see our Starters and Bullpen in the top 4 and top 3, respectively. Defense is getting better up to .682, but still has room to get better... and the offense is just awful. A team batting average of .222 just isn't going to cut... Going to do some lineup tinkering for next week. Moving Jose Rodriquez (.147-1-9) out of the lineup and shifting Mauro Canderlaira to RF and putting Mark Morris back at 3B. Also Pablo Freitas is going to drop from the #2 hole to the #4 hole swapping spot with Candelaria... something has to get these guys going (also going to do more platooning to try to find the hot hand).

** Up next April in Review **

Carlos Rodriquez blew his first save, giving up 3 in the bottom of the 9th and Elmer Hawkins got the loss (0-1) allowing 1 in the 12th. The offense left 12 runners on base, but did get 12 hits, 5 players had 2-hit games. Brian Cline had a triple and 2 RBI and Chris Shopland had a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Game 27
Norfolk 1, Ellicott City 7
Carlos Mateo (1-2) threw the ball well for 7.1 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 ER) on 6 hits. Javier Castro imploded in the 8th giving up 3 runs, on 2 hits and a walk. The offense left another 11 men on base, thanks to 7 walks and 4 hits.

Game 28
Norfolk 3, Ellicott City 4 (10 innings)
Karl Armstrong was great on the hill today, going 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and took the ND. Carlos Rodriquez blew his second save in the 9th and took the loss (2-2) in the 10th. Joy Payne and Jose Rodriquez each had 2 hits and Chris Shopland added a HR (2).

Tsuneo Sato (3-2) knew what had to be done to get a win, giving up only 1 run on 2 hits over 8 innings. Carlos Rodriquez got things right, striking out the side in the 9th for the save (6). Nine hits, nine runners left on. Jacob Chaney and Mark Morris each had 2 hits.

MarVa: Jonathan Cook (Richmond Cardinals) 10-23 1 HR 5 RBI 6 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Richmond Cardinals (117.3)
2) Georgetown Sixteens (115.3)
3) Baltimore Barons (107.0)
4) Dover Generals (106.3)
5) Ocean City Tourists (104.6)
15) Norfolk Cavaliers (66.7)

GM Notes: Not sure where I would be without the pitching performing at the level its performing. Just need to get something going on offense. Trade a pitcher for bat? Shake up the personnel? Send people down, even though the minors isn't full of talent, it would at least send a message... hmm... something needs to be done.

Timothy Olson

Our scout Timothy Olson has been busy, running around scouting the potential draft picks and cruising the Dominican looking for talent... so far I am not overly impressed with the draft class, no one is major league ready, but do I really want to take a HS arm first? A lot of questions will hopefully be answered leading up to the draft...

Right now Gabriel Santos and 18 year old out of Notre Dame de la Baie HS in Green Bay is looking pretty solid... he could be a future ace, but as it is with any 18 year old kid, you never know... Santos: Stuff 6/11, Movement: 11/13, Control: 7/17, he has 3 pitches, a stamina of 14, but only throws 87-89.

In news out of the Dominican we locked up 16-year old Francisco Gallegos, he projects to be a 4.5* player. Contact: 5/11, Gap: 6/11, HR: 7/20, Eye: 2/7, Avoid K's: 1/6... he has a lot of work ahead of him, but has pure raw power and he makes the game look easy. He is heading to our international complex before.

More draft preview will be upcoming. Our picks
Round 1: Pick 1
Round 2: Pick 4
Round 3: Pick 4 and Pick 6
Round 4: Pick 4
Round 5: Pick 8

Should get some pretty decent talent, we will see where the draft takes us. Its is 2.5 weeks away.

Week 6

Current Week: 5-1 (17-20 5 GB 2nd)
Next Week: 2 @ Milton, 2 @ Newark, 3 at Richmond
Power Ranking: 11 (+4)
Fan Interest: 55
Owners Mood: Good (increasing)

Lineup Shakeup: I decided to tinker with the lineup a little more, moving Joe Payne to the leadoff spot and Ron Alder down to the 7 hole. Both guys have speed, but Alder his hitting below .260 and Payne over .300.

Rumors: The rumors have started to swirl around Norfolk that Manager Alastair Turcotte is on the hot seat.

Game 32
Norfolk 6, Baltimore 2
Carlos Mateo was the benefactor of 5 runs in the last 3 innings as the offense scored when it was necessary. Mateo (2-2) went 7 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs. Pablo Freitas has 2 hits, including a HR (4) and Jacob Chaney added 2 RBI.

Injury Alert: Mark Morris was injured on defensive play and was pulled out of the game in the 5th inning. We await the diagnosis.

Game 33
Norfolk 10, Baltimore 7
Karl Armstrong got hit hard, but sometimes all you need is a hot offense to help you out. Karl (2-3) went 6.1 innings, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks fro the win. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a perfect 9th for the save (7). Pablo Fretias hit a HR (5) in his second consecutive game, Joe Payne hit a solo-HR (2) and Jacob Chaney added 3 RBI's. Ron Alder had 3 hits, making it 5 in the past 2 games.

Game 34
Norfolk 6, Baltimore 4
Tsuneo Sato (4-2) threw 8 solid innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits, while Javier Castro closed out the 9th for the save (2). The offense exploded for 12 hits, but we still left 10 men on base, as 4 Cav's each had 2 hits. Ron Alder continued his hot streak getting 2 more hits, including a HR (4), and Pablo Freitas, had 2 hits of his own, including a HR (6) of his own.

Injury & Transactions: The news came in today, Mark Morris was diagnosed with a torn ankle ligaments and will be out for the next 4 months. Morris was brought over as a defensive star at 3B with a pretty decent bat. Sad to say he hasn't lived up to either, so maybe a break will do him some good. At 3B this year, a position he is rated a 20, he has a .925 FPCT. On the offensive side he is hitting a mere .176-0-8, which lead him to being pulled from the starting lineup... to replace Morris on the roster, it was announced that Nofolk purchased the contract, from AAA Yokohama, Mason Foster. Foster is a 12+ at all the infield positions and can fill in LF if necessary. On the season Mason is hitting .342-0-9 in AAA. I went with Mason over a recall of Jesus Rivera, because I want Jesus to get his AB's in AAA.

Game 35
Ocean City 4, Norfolk 9
Geoffrey Bayles (3-3) was the benefactor of 5 runs first to take the win. Bayles threw 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits. Mauro Candeleria had 3 hits, including his first HR (1), and 2 RBI, and Brian Cline added 2 hits and 3 RBI with a HR (5) of his own.

Game 36
Ocean City 3, Norfolk 7
Don Sweetapple has to be starting to think what does he have to do to get a victory. Last season everything seemed to go right for him, this year its been a battle. Sweetapple went 7.0, giving up 3 runs on 11 hits. Dalton Whitaker (1-0) got the win throwing 2 innings of shutout ball. Tony Soto and Ron Alder each had 3 hits and Jacob Chaney (3) and Howard Harper (3) each hit HR's. Alder now has 6 straight multi-hit games.

Game 37
Ocean City 8, Norfolk 7
Carlos Mateo (2-3) got roughed up in 2.2 innings of work, giving up 6 runs (3 ER) on 5 hits. Mauro Candelaria (2) and Gilberto Ramos (2) each HR'd and Ron Alder continued his hot streak with another multi-hit game.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Vince Moy (Milford Clippers) 12-25 3 HR 8 RBI
MarVa: Dave Hughes (Annapolis Admirals) 11-19 4 HR 10 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Richmond Cardinals (108.0)
2) Ocean City Tourists (102.5)
3) Milton Brewers (101.9)
4) Dover Generals (100.5)
5) Milford Clippers (100.0)
11) Norfolk Cavaliers (85.7)

GM Notes: Our best week yet, makes me feel better about this team. Hopefully we can continue this hot streak for a little longer. We have a 7 game road trip this week, so it should be interesting. 4 of those games we will be DH less... Moving Ron Alder out of the lead-off spot seems to be the right move, as he went 13-23 .565 with 3 RBI and scoring 9 times... Our offense moved out of 8th to 6th in the Runs Scored category, which is a good sign... Scott Smith will be starting his comeback from a partially torn collateral ligament in 2 days, after being out for the past 11 1/2 months.

Week 7

Current Week: 6-1 (23-21 - GB 1st)
Next Week: 2 vs New Castle, 4 vs Annapolis
Power Ranking: 5 (+6)
Fan Interest: 55
Owners Mood: Delighted (increasing)

Game 38
Norfolk 2, Milton 1
Karl Armstrong (3-3) continued to throw the ball well, throwing 7.0 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing 1 run. Carlos Rodriquez pitched the 9th for the save (8). Chris Shopland singled in 2 in the 3rd for the only Cav's runs.

Transactions: Scott Smith has returned from missing 11 1/2 months and has been sent to AA New Orleans to begin his rehab assignment... oddly enough he will join Scott Smith in the rotation... We will see if AA Manager Robby Murray can keep them straight.

Game 39
Norfolk 5, Milton 2
Tsuneo Sato (5-2) threw 5.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. Billy Lee threw a perfect 9th for the save (1). Mauro Candelaria and Tony Soto each had 2 hits, and Pablo Freitas knocked in 2.

Game 40
Norfolk 4, Newark 2
Geoffrey Bayles (4-3) threw 5.2 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits and 4 pitchers out of the bullpen kept the game close as the Cav's stayed hot. Jose Rodriquez had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Jacob Chaney added a 2-run HR (4)

Game 41
Norfolk 5, Newark 3
Don Sweetapple (2-5) got a win going 7.0 innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Carlos Rodriquez closed out the game for the save (10). Chris Shopland and Jacob Chaney each had 2 RBI's, as six Cav's had a hit a piece.

Game 42
Norfolk 1, Richmond 0
Carlos Mateo (3-3), Dalton Whitaker and Ron Harris combined on a 1-hit shutout. Mateo went 7.1 giving up 1 hit while striking out 7. Ron Harris pitched the 9th for the save (2). Julio Romero had 2 hits, and Mauro Candelaria had a solo HR (3), in the 7th, for the only run of the game.

Game 43
Norfolk 3, Richmond 7
Karl Armstrong (3-4) got roughed up in 5.1 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits to take the loss. Six Cav's had a hit, Pablo Freitas doubled and Tony Soto hit a 2-run HR (2).

Game 44
Norfolk 4, Richmond 2 (12 innings)
Tsuneo Sato took the ND going 8 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, as the offense just couldn't get him enough runs. Javier Castro pitched the final 2 innings for the win (3-1). Ron Adler has 2 hits and Brian Cline scored two times, including a solo-HR (6).

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pete MacCammon (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 12-25 5 HR 15 RBI
MarVa: Francisco Reyes (Ocean City Tourists) 11-26 6 HR 11 RBI 7 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Dover Generals (113.0)
2) Annapolis Admirals (108.0)
3) Georgetown Sixteens (102.3)
4) Wilmington Iron Pigs (102.0)
5) Norfolk Cavaliers (101.1)

GM Notes: After taking 2 of 3 from the Richmond Cardinals we moved into a tie in first with them. I would have to look at it, but I am pretty sure this is the latest in the season we have been in first. Feels good when everything comes together... I am going to continue to be patient with this offense, even though as a team we are hitting .234 and have a .291 OBPCT. Just not enough people on the market to make a difference... We are now #2 in runs against, and our Defensive Efficiency is up to .697, inching closer to my .700 goal... We will see how May ends, but it would be nice to stay hot.

2014 1st Year Player Draft

Round 1: Pick 1 (Norfolk Cavaliers) : Gabriel Santos (P). Our Scout wanted to go with Adrian Smith who is a HS outfielder with 3.5 star potential... I felt we could do better with the #1 overall pick, Really wanting to pick college Catcher Andy Kohl and probably the highest rated player in the draft, but would be a hard sign for us... but I decided to go with my own pick HS Pitcher Gabriel Santos. Santos is a project, but one of the highest rated pitchers in the draft. Stuff: 6/11, Movement: 11/13, Control: 7/17. Known as a baseball rat, with a very high worth ethic. Tim Olson made the following comment regarding Santos: Santos has the makings of a top-flight starter.

Round 1 : Pick 2 (Dover Generals) : Andy Kohl (C). This guy looks like a top flight player, he is the only 5* pospect, the guy I wanted. He is going to be a PITA to sign, so we will see what happens during the signing. He is the most refined player in the draft. Contact: 8/11, Power: 6/12, Eye: 9/13. What Tim Olson says about Andy: "Kohl is a dominant of offensive player who could anchor any lineup for years to come. It is possible Hall of Fame material.

Round 1 : Pick 3 (New Castle Colonials) : Matt 'Dragon' Hollis (P). Tim went and checked out this college pitcher. He is rated very close to Santos and I thought about taking 'Dragon', but being 22 he sort of scared me. Hollis has 5 pitches, 3 pitches are 14+. He is an Very Intelligent player, with a Very High work ethic. Stuff: 10/14, Movement: 12/13, Control: 5/10 . Hollis was #2 pick in last years draft by, oddly enough, the New Castle Colonials! Olson sees him with the makings of "top-flight starter."

Round 1 : Pick 4 (Baltimore Barons) : Jesus Mansanarez (P). Jesus is a quality pitcher, who throws 4 pitchers and could be a decent middle reliever (only 8 stamina). Whats intriguing about Jesus is he is a 16/13/15 rated 2B/3B/SS with a great arm. Known in college mainly for his pitching he might be someone to keep an eye on as a middle infielder. Stuff: 8/12, Movement: 10/10, Control 6/12. Hitting: Contact: 5/8, Power: 6/11, Avoid K's: 8/15. Olson see's him as needing to learn another pitch, because is repertoire isn't good enough, and projects him to be a long reliever in the future.

Round 1 : Pick 5 (New Castle Colonials) : Adrian Smith (OF). The guy Olson wanted #1 overall. He is a slow man, with below average defense, but with big power. Contact: 4/10, Power: 4/16, Eye: 3/11. Olson says he sees him as a bench bat, but its possible he could be given a shot at a bigger role.

The rest of Norfolk's Picks:
Round 2: Pick 4 : Jeremy Jones (SS). Again I went against Tim Olsons recommendation and picked HS SS Jeremy Jones. Jeremy is a middle infielder with above average speed. Has 3.5 star potential. Contact: 7/12, Power: 1/5, Eye: 6/12. Olson's summary: "Looks like a borderline player to me."

Round 3: Pick 4 : Doug Nelson (P). This time I went with my scouts decision. Doug is a highly intelligent and extremely hard worker. Maybe if his pitching doesn't work out we could turn him int a coach. He throws in the low 90's and has 3 pitches. The concern will be his control. Stuff: 9/11, Movement: 9/10, Control: 5/9. I find Olson's comment funny since he is a hard worker and intelligent: "Not of a repertoire now, and shows no aptitude to learn"

Round 3: Pick 6 : Vaughn Griffith (P). I guess I should stop drafting pitchers, but the position players just aren't doing much for me. Vaughn is 17 and might be a project, but I am going to take the chance. Stuff: 6/13, Movement: 6/6, Control: 4/14. Olson predicts "He will eventually make a big league club. Not spectacular, but a serviceable bullpen guy."

Round 4: Pick 4 : Joseph Kearse (1B). Took the best position player out there. Has a lot to learn, and if he works hard (which he has a tendancy not to) he might make it to the bigs. Contact: 5/11, Power: 1/6, Eye: 4/10.

Round 5: Pick 8 : Donald Mathews (2B). Just an average ballplayer in college, we will see how he develops in the minors. Contact: 2/6, Power: 1/3, Eye: 5/10. Olsons review: No future in the big leagues.

** I wanted to take our next pick instead of Mathews. Olson recommend Mathews, I didn't like him... I dropped Sanchez in and forgot to hit "Draft Player", continued to our next pick and I saw Sanchez still on the board. Oops **

Round 8: Pick 4 : Vern Sanchez (SS). A 15+ defender in the IF who decent speed. Not much else can be said about Vern. If he gets his batting rating up higher we might see him around the big league club as a defensive substitute... Also pitches, so we may see him get some innings in this season to see how he projects. Contact: 6/7, Power: 4/6, Eye: 4/6 Pitching: Stuff: 6/8, Movement: 7/7, Control: 4/8 ... Olson predicts Sanchez is destined to be a career minor leaguer.

Round 9: Pick 4 : Gary Lee (3B). Best talent available. Just "one of the guys"... Cont: 5/9, Power: 3/4, Eye: 4/9

Round 10: Pick 4: Bertrand Balkwill (SS). Olson recommend him, and I went with it. I mean check that name out, how could you go wrong? Contact: 2/5, Power: 1/4, Eye: 5/10

GM Thoughts: Both of the drafts haven't been very deep. Last year I grabbed a few (2-3) guys that might make some noise soon. But this year outside of the first two picks I felt like I didn't even need to be in the building. Here is hoping the coaches can make something of those guys. One thing I went after was guys who were "extremely" hard works and/or "extremely" intelligent. We will see how it pays off in the end. I will do a full draft recap at the end of the season for this year and last year.

Week 8

Current Week: 4-2 (27-23 - GB 1st (+2))
Next Week: 2 @ Milford, 2 @ Lewes, 3 @ Chesapeake
Power Ranking: 5 (0+/-)
Fan Interest: 55
Owners Mood: Delighted

Game 45
New Castle 2, Norfolk 3
As we have learned so far this season, we will win and lose with pitching. This game it took 6 of them, but they got the job done. Bayles started and could only get through 4.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and 2 runs (on 92 pitches). Ron Harris (1-0) pitched 2 perfect innings for the win. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a quiet 9th for the save (11). Mauro Candelaria had 2 of the 8 Cav hits and Pablo Freitas hit a HR (7).

Game 46
New Castle 0, Norfolk 2
Don Sweetapple (3-5) was tired of losing so he took matters into his own hands and thew 8 shut-out innings, giving up 4 hits and striking out a season high 10. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a perfect 9th for the save (12). Jose Rodriquez had 3 hits to lead the offense and Ron Alder and Tony Soto each had 2.

Game 47
Annapolis 5, Norfolk 2
Carlos Mateo (3-4) took the loss in a pretty well pitched game. Giving up 7 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings. Elmer Hawkins pitched 3 innings of 3 hit ball, giving up 1 run in relief. Patrick Shelton had 2 hits and Pablo Freitas hit another solo-HR (8)

Game 48
Annapolis 5, Norfolk 2
Karl Armstrong (3-5) went 5.2 innings, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 7. Billy Lee threw 3.1 scoreless innings to keep the game close. Eleven hits and only 2 runs to show for it. Joe Payne, Pablo Freitas, Chris Shopland and Jacob Chaney each had 2 hits.

Game 49
Annapolis 5, Norfolk 8
Tsuneo Sato was got the ND as the Cav's scored 4 in the bottom of the 8th for the win. Sato only went 7, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Dalton Whitaker got the win (2-0) and Carlos Rodriquez the save (13). Mauro Candelaria had 3 hits and 2 runs, Joe Payne had a 3-run HR (3) and Tony Soto had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Jose Rodriquez added his 2nd HR.

Game 50 (The Day of the Draft)
Annapolis 1, Norfolk 2
Geoffrey Bayles (5-3) went 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 6. 4 middle relievers facing 7 batters gave the game to Carlos Rodriquez, who pitched the 9th, for the save (14). Tony Soto was the offensive star with a 2-run HR (3). Julio Romero added 2 hits.

Transaction News (I): Norberto Vazquez has been released. No one has ever heard of Norberto, but he was the 100th (and final) pick of the Norfolk Cavaliers in the inaugural draft. At 29 and not able to hit the ball in AAA Norberto was given his release.

Transaction News (II): Scott Smith, was moved up to AAA, during his rehab assignment. He still has options so he may end up being a AAA for a while. In 3 games in AA New Orleans, Smith went 19.2 innings, with a 1-1 record.

Draft News: It took a day for #3 pick Doug Nelson to give us a call and laugh at our offer. We offered slot $340,000, he wants $440,000. We will up our offer, since we have the budget space to his asking price (actually $441,000). He is also a pretty decent hitter, so that intrigues me.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Garrot Grant (Milford Clippers) 12-22 2 HR, 4 RBI
MarVa: Anthony Cunningham (Ocean City Tourists) 11-24 4 HR, 8 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (115.8)
2) Dover Generals (114.4)
3) Ocean City Tourists(114.3)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (103.8)
5) Norfolk Cavaliers (103.2)

GM Notes: Our pitching lead us once again. I am getting used to this winning and thats sort of scary. Why? Because how can a team that is hitting .237, with an OBPCT of .294 continue to win games? The pitching, starters and bullpen alike, have been great, but the weight on their backs has to be getting heavy.

** Up Next the Month of May in Review **

No team is running away with any division, which is should make for some very good baseball to come. The Ocean City Tourists are the only repeat team in first, as the Dover Generals, Wilmington Iron Pigs and the Norfolk Cavaliers making noise and taking first. The biggest surprise has to be the Western Division in MarVa Conference.

Norfolk Cavaliers May in Review

The teams batting average has went up 15 points in May, which means the Cav's offense is starting to hit the ball. We need them to do more, since the pitching staff has done so much. We only have 2 players hitting over .300, Mauro Candelaria (.327) and Jacob Chaney (.311). Pablo Freitas needs to get hitting! He hit .261 for us last season, but is only hitting .230 this year. He is supposed to be our team leader. Our pitching staff has been great, and I only hope they can keep it up... Here is to hoping for another hot month...

Is your manager still on the hot seat? You are 15-4 since you said that. Maybe you should keep the heat on.

He is in the last year of his contract, so yes the heat is still on. I figure I have until the end of August to extend his contract... so, yeah, he still has a lot of prove... and after last week, make it 21-5! Never saw that coming.

Thanks for reading along...

Washington has just been decimated with injuries. SP's Bill Downey, Matt Perry and Ray Corbett all injured.

Downey hasn't played yet this year, but is a top of the rotation guy, Corbett has missed 3+ weeks and will be returning this month, and Perry has been battling shoulder inflammation and is out 4 months he had 3 starts before going on the DL.

On the offensive side, 3B Cliff Jones is out for 2 more months, LF George Corbett has missed 3 weeks, 1B Roberto Gomez is now out for a 3 weeks, and backup 3B is out 3-4 weeks...

Just been a rough season. If we keep playing how we have been, then they don't have a chance, but this division is fairly week so if they can get (and stay) healthy anything is possible, the proved that last season coming back in the last 2 weeks of the season and riding that to the title.

** sorry about the delay in getting back to this, my ssd hard drive decided not to work anymore. lucky for me I was able to get to my secondary drive and pull this data off, with no data loss **

Game 51
Norfolk 5, Milford 1
Don Sweetapple (4-5) was red hot and pitched a complete game 6 hitter, allowing 1 run. Brian Cline lead the offense with 3 hits, 2 doubles, and 4 RBI. Pablo Freitas and Mauro Candelaria added 2 hits a piece.

Draft News: Doug Nelson, our 3rd round pick, informed us he wasn't very happy with our initial offer. We offered him $250,000 he is asking for $440,000. We upped the offer to $441,000, we have budget space and I have a good feeling about Doug's future.

Transactions: The Norfolk Cavaliers have announced they are parting ways with Norberto Vazquez. Why is this transactions meaningful? Norberto was our last pick in the inaugural draft, pick #1587. Norberto has split time with AAA Yokohama and AA New Orleans over the past 2 years, but at the age of 29 he just wasn't meeting our needs, and we had to make room for a new younger crop.

Game 52
Norfolk 9, Milford 2
Carlos Mateo (4-4) threw 5 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 5. Bill Lee and Dalton Whitaker threw a combined 3 shutout innings to close out the game. Julio Romero had 2 RBI and 2 Runs, hitting his first HR (1) of the season. Ron Adler and Mauro Candelaria each added 2 hits.

Game 53
Norfolk 6, Lewes 5 (10 innings)
Karl Armstrong went 5 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, and took the ND. Darlton Whitaker blew the save, Carlos Rodriquez (3-2) threw 1 inning for the win and Ron Harris got the save (3). The offense was lead by Jose Rodriquez who added 2 hits and 2 RBI, Ron Adler, Pablo Freitas and Joe Payne each had 2 hits.

Draft News: Our other 3rd round pick, Vaughn Griffith, accepted our $330,000 offer and has been sent to Jacksonville to begin his quest to Norfolk... Gabriel Santos the #1 pick overall has signed his $4,500,000 offer and is also headed to Jacksonville. At 18 years old and 6 feet tall he has a bright future ahead of him.

Game 54
Norfolk 7, Lewes 0
Tsuneo Sato (6-2) threw 6 innings of 2 hit ball, and Bill Lee threw 3 innings of 1 hit ball for the save (2). Jose Rodriquez hit 2 HR's (4) and drove in 4, Ron Adler had 2 hits and 3 RBI, including a HR (5). Pablo Freitas added 2 hits and 2 runs.

Game 55
Norfolk 10, Chesapeake 3
Geoffrey Bayles (6-3) went 5.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, and Ron Harris went the final 3.1 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits for the save (4). Mauro Candelaira had 3 hits and 2 RBI, Joe Payne had 3 hits and 3 Runs, Tony Soto had 2 hits and 3 RBI, and Brian Cline hit a 3-run HR (7).

Draft News: Jeremy Jones, our 2nd round pick, rejected our initial offer, he is listed as a 'hard' sign for Norfolk so we will see what happens. He is asking for $850,000, our second offer is $750,000... Don Matthews, our 5th round pick, wasn't interested in our offer and asked us to give him some more. We have offered Don $150,000, he is looking for $210,000

Game 56
Norfolk 6, Chesapeake 0
Don Sweetapple (5-5) threw a complete game 2-hit shutout striking out 8 for the victory. Tony Soto had 3 hits and 2 RBI and Joe Payne had 3 hits and 2 Runs.

Draft News: Doug Nelson and the Cavaliers have come to an agreement, Nelson signs on for $441,000 and will join Jacksonville to begin his career.

Game 57
Norfolk 1, Chesapeake 6
Carlos Mateo (4-5) went 6.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs (5 ER) for the only loss of the week. The offense struggled only able to get 6 hits and scoring 1 time. Pablo Freitas had 2 hits and an RBI to lead the offense.

Draft News: Joseph Kearse, our 4th round pick, who is rated as an "extremely hard" sign, has rejected our first offer; And based on what he is looking for, he will continue rejecting our offers. Kearse a HS'er is asking for $4,500,000, our offer $500,000. Doesn't look good for Mr Kearse.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pedro Morin (Dover Generals) 13-21 1 HR, 4 RBI
MarVa: Alberto Trujillo (Annapolis Admirals) 13-28 5 HR, 15 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Ocean City Tourists(109.8)
2) Norfolk Cavaliers (109.2)
3) Dover Generals (108.5)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (105.1)
5) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (99.2)

GM Notes: The team has been red hot ever since we made it known that Manager Alastair Turcotte's job was on the line. Maybe it was a sign he should stay, maybe it was just luck, but right now Alastair is lucky to have a job... We are coming up on a 6-game homestand against 2 of our divisional opponents. If we can stay hot, we could put a little distance between us and Richmond. Every lil bit counts... I am not tinkering with the line-ups this week, the offense is scoring runs. Heck our OBPCT is actually over. 300 now!... Pitching is still solid #2 in runs against and bullpen era and #3 in starters era... the one thing that makes me smile is, after making a few defensive maneuvers, our Def Efficiency is now at .699! My goal is over .700 and we are on track.

Week 10

Current Week: 4-2 (37-26 - GB 1st (+4))
Next Week: 3 vs Ocean City, 3 vs Baltimore
Power Ranking: 3 (-1)
Fan Interest: 54 (-2) << 4-2 and 4 game lead and we lose fans??
Owners Mood: Ecstatic (improving)

Week 10 began with our first off day in 13 days, a well needed break...

Game 58
Richmond 6, Norfolk 12
Karl Armstrong (4-5) got roughed up a little bit, but thanks to an offensive explosion was able to get the win. Armstrong went 6.1 innings, giving up 5 runs (4 ER) on 7 hits and 5 walks! Howard Harper had a day to remember, going 5-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Tony Soto added 2 hits in 3 AB's, both being HR's (5), and Pablo Freitas went 2-5 with 3 RBI and a HR (9). This was probably our best offensive game of the season. All starters got a least 1 hit with 5 getting 2 or more.

Draft News: Joseph Kearse laughed at our final offer and decided he would attend college rather than begin his big league career. This really wasn't a surprise to anyone, a 4th round pick asking for Top-5 pick money. We will see what happens with Mr Kearse in the future.

Game 59
Richmond 4, Norfolk 0
Tsuneo Sato (6-3) must be wondering what happened to his run support! As the Cav's offense didn't give him anything. Sato went 7.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs. The Cav's offense had 5 different players single, not very exciting.

Game 60
Richmond 0, Norfolk 6
Geoffrey Bayles (7-3) continued his hot pitching, going 6.2 innings of 3 hit ball, then handed it over to Ron Harris who went the final 2.1 innings of shut out ball. Brian Cline and Mauro Candelaria each had two hits and a HR (8 and 4, respectively). Pablo Frietas added 2 RBI and Joe Payne hadded 2 hits.

Game 61
Ellicott City 4, Norfolk 7
Don Sweetapple (6-5) moved over .500 WPCT this season after a rocky start. Sweetapple went 8 innings, giving up 4 runs (1 ER) on 8 hits. Carlos Rodriquez pitched a rocky 9th for the save (15). Allen Britt was the offensive star in this game going 2-4 with a HR (1) and 3 RBI. Pablo Freitas and Ron Alder each added 2 hits.

Game 62
Ellicott City 2, Norfolk 4
Carlos Mateo pitched good enough for the win, but had to settle for the ND, going 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits. Dalton Whitaker (3-0) pitched a shut-out 9th for the win. Chris Shopland hit a solo-HR (3) in the 5th for the only Cav's run, till the 9th, when Tony Soto hit a 3-run pinch-hit walk-off HR (6)!!

Draft News: Our 5th round pick, Donald Matthews has decided to head back to school. Asking for $210,000, we only came up with $150,000. His ratings weren't good enough to up our offer. This was a very shallow draft... The only remaining pick we are waiting to hear from is Jeremy Jones. I wish I could throw more money at him now before he answers. Since Kearse and Mathews didn't sign I would have no issue meeting his demand: $850,000 vs $750,000.

Game 63
Ellicott City 5, Norfolk 2
Karl Armstrong (4-6) is going through a rough patch taking the loss, his 4th in a row. Armstrong threw 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 5 runs. Elmer Hawkins added 2.1 shut-out innings. The offense had 10 hits, but only 1 run to show for it. Tony Soto had 3 hits, 2 doubles, Mauro Candelaria added 3-hits and Brian Cline and Joe Payne each had 2.

Draft News: Jeremy Jones said "lets try this again". As I just said, we will go back and up our offer. He is looking for $850,000, I think we will give him $860,000. We have money to spare and he has some skills that we like. Glad he didn't walk away.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Vince Moy (Milford Clippers) 11-22 2 HR, 6 RBI
MarVa: Tony Soto (Norfolk Cavaliers) 9-16 3 HR, 6 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (115.1)
2) Dover Generals (113.9)
3) Norfolk Cavaliers (108.7)
4) Annapolis Admirals (105.1)
5) Milford Clippers (100.6)

GM Notes: Have to be pleased, winning 4 of 6 against division rivals. We increased our division lead to 4 games, as the offense has started to come around. Our offense is no longer ranked 8th in any offensive categories! And we still have some room to grow, at least I think so... Karl Armstrong needs to get back on track, he isn't pitching bad, but he isn't pitching great. Maybe i will give him an extra start off, just hate messing with a good thing right now... This team is playing as a team right now and hopefully we continue down this path. Its nice to see W's.

Week 11

Current Week: 5-1 (42-27 - GB 1st (+4))
Next Week: 2 vs Wilmington, 2 @ Georgetown, 3 vs Washington
Power Ranking: 1 (+2)
Fan Interest: 56 (+2)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

<< Off Day >>

Game 64
Ocean City 2, Norfolk 10
Tsuneo Sato (7-3) threw 8.0 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and was the benefactor of a big offensive showing from the Cavs. Thirteen hits and ten runs, I like it when things are clicking. Joe Payne, Brian Clien and Jacob Chaney each had 2 hits, Chaney added 3 RBI, and Jose Rodriquez lead the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI, including a 2-run HR (5).

Game 65
Ocean City 1, Norfolk 4
Geoffrey Bayles threw 5.2 innings, givin gup 1 run on 5 hits for the ND. Dalton Whitaker pitched 1.1 innigns of perfect ball for the win (4-0) and Carlos Rodriquez closed out the 9th for the save (16). Pablo Freitas lead the offense with 3 hits, including a tie-break 3-run HR (10) in the 8th.

Game 66
Ocean City 4, Norfolk 5
Don Sweetapple (7-5) took the win going 7 solid innings, striking out 7, and giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. Carlos Rodriquez pitched the 9th for the save (17). The offense was leas by Jose Rodriquez who had 2 hits, including a 3-run HR (6). Howard Harper had a pinch hit double in the 7th for the game winning RBI... Elmer Hawkins threw one pitch, got an out, then limped off the field and had to be removed from the game.

Draft News: Jermey Jones was excited that we met (a little more, actually) his demand and signed the contract. He will be heading down to Jacksonville to start his career. Jones is a 5* star prospect and we are happy to have to him.

Game 67
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 0
Carlos Mateo (4-6) was a bad luck pitcher today, going 6.1 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, but taking the loss. The offense just couldn't get anything started today, getting 7 hits and leaving 10 men on base (and we only struckout 4 times). Brian Cline and Gilberto Ramos each had 2 hits.

Game 68
Baltimore 4, Norfolk 2
Karl Armstrong (5-6) bounced back from a string of rocky starts with an 8 inning performance, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Carlos Rodriquez pitched thed 9th for the save (18). Joe Payne and Mauro Candelaria each had w hits. Brian Cline hit a solo-HR(9) and Jose Rodriquez hit a PH HR (7) in the 7th. Pablo Freitas was removed from the game in the 4th after hurting himself on a defensive play.

Injury News: Got a visit from Franky Gonzalez, our trainer, today and he didn't give me the news I was hoping to hear. First Elmer Hawlkins, he let me know Elmer strained his hamstring and will be out approx 7 weeks. Elmer has been lights out this season our our Lefty specialist. In 20 innings he has only given up 4 runs... Now the better'ish news. He let me know Pablo Freitas will only be out for 3 weeks with a slightly strained hammy. Pablo is the teamer in HR's (10) and RBI (41), so his bat will be missed!!.. Both players were placed on the 15-day DL.

Transaction News: To take Elmer Hawkins spot in the pen is Jose Martinez. He has been shakey in AAA and now will have an opportunity to prove his worth as a reliver with the big club. Martinez was 3-13 last year for the Cav's, and in 8 starts he is 1-4 6.20. Yes he is our best option (at least for now). I may have to look at the market and grab another lefty... Freitas' spot will be taken by Mason Foster. Mason got a cup of coffee earlier this season and didnt' get any AB's. With the depth in the OF he has been brought up to serve as a defensive replacement. Again this might be short lived, we will see. We could go with another pitcher. Not sure yet.

Game 69
Baltimore 3, Norfolk 5
Tsueno Sato started went 2 innings of perfect ball before having ot leave in the 3rd after his first pitch of the inning. Hopefully its nothing more than a tweak and he will be back soon... Ron Harris with 3 innings, giving up 3 runs and Bill Lee went (1-0) 2 perfect innings for the win and to pick up Sato. Carlos Rodriquez shut the door for the save (19). Mauro Candelaria had 3 hits and 2 runs, and Ron Alder had 2 hits, including a HR (6) and 2 RBI to lead the offense.

Injury News: Tsuneo Sato was diagnosed with a mild shoulder strain and will end up missing a start. Jose Martinez who was just recalled will be starting in his place. Hopefully this isn't a sign of thigns to come and just a minor injury.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Charles Culligan (New Castle Colonials) 10-18, 3 HRs and 6 RBI.
MarVa: Jose Rodriquez (Norfolk Cavaliers) 6-12 3 HR, 8 RBI
* Jose is the 2nd Cav in a row. You know things are going well.

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (117.6)
2) Dover Generals (108.4)
3) Richmond Cardinals (107.1)
4) Annapolis Admirals (101.3)
5) New Castle Colonials (94.9)

GM Notes: I have to admit I am quite surprised to wake up today and see us as the top team in the power rankings!! I haven't been talking about how lucky we have been with out suffering any major injuries, but this week showed us we aren't immune to them. We had 2 major injuries and 1 minor one. Pablo Freitas isn't having the year we've been expecting from him, but he has been one of our offensive leaders all season. Hopefully losing him won't slow our offense down too much... Everyone plays a role on this team. Last weak Tony Soto carried the offense, this week Jose Rodriquez took the load. The offense will need to step it up for the next 3-4 weeks with Freitas out of action, but as long as the pitching continues to pitch like they have been we will just need to score some runs. We are still 6th in runs scored. But our pitchers are now #2 in Runs against, #2 in Starters ERA and #1 in Bullpen ERA! And the best news yet our Defensive Efficiency is over 700 @.702. Things are going good here in Norfolk.
