Frank Dezelan 1966
Tough one to find, especially face to the camera, as part of his page in the Cambria County Hall of Fame. Dezelan was an N.L. fill-in for three years, and full time only in 1969 and 1970.
He's far left, then it's Bill Williams, Braves' pitcher-coach Satchel Paige, Lee Weyer, and Ed Sudol, during a late September 1968 series in Atlanta. Underscores Paige's fame, too... |

Haven't seen this one before - from the photographer's insignia lower right, looks like early-to-mid '50s

Doc Hanna
Tnfoto originally posted a photo of Leonard "Doc" Hanna here in 2016 as an older man. Here he is closer to his 1872 umpire appearance as a member of the Cleveland Forest City Club, ca. 1868. From John Thorn's blog.

Larry Walding 1995 Missing Umpire
Was able to locate Larry Walding's Facebook page, and this photo shows him umpiring at first base in a game featuring the California Angels. He only worked 5 games in 1995, and two of them were as the first base ump in Angels-Blue Jays games on April 28 and May 1, so this must be from either of those days.

Harry Adams 1897 Missing Umpire
After much searching, I was able to finally find a photo of Harry Adams, who umpired a lone National League game in 1897, along with 15 American League games in 1903.
According to his obituary, which I've included here too, he was longtime friends with Ban Johnson, Connie Mack, and a host of other baseball dignitaries and umpires. He also ran a printing shop in Philadelphia. The portrait comes from the May 28, 1905 Philadelphia Inquirer and the obit is from the July 2, 1941 Inquirer. |

Bart Whaley 1995 Missing Umpire
Okay, so starting at 12:17 in this YouTube video highlighting the 1995 Rockies season, a play is shown where Joe Girardi hits an infield single to shortstop, scoring Roberto Mejia, to win the game for Colorado.
This highlight appears to show the final moments of a May 2 game where the Rockies won 6-5 over the Padres. And umpiring in his second and final game that day was Bart Whaley, umpiring at second base, and he is shown for a few frames in the clip. Obviously not the greatest photo, if you can even call it that, but its something at least. |

Jim Shewmake 1978 Missing Umpire
The photo of Shewmake comes from the April 22, 2001 issue of the Fort Worth (TX) Star-Telegram along with an article featuring the fact that he is the new football coach for Haltom High School in the Fort Worth area. The caption to the photo says that he "worked in the Arlington area from 1977-97 at Bailey Junior High, Arlington (emphasis added), Martin, and Mansfield."
The newspaper article below on the right is from the Dallas Morning News of Aug. 26, 1978. It indicates that the Jim Shewmake who was the replacement umpire in the one game at Arlington, TX, in 1978 was a baseball coach at Arlington High School. So this seems to validate that this is the right man. Last edited by Cusick; 08-23-2020 at 04:39 PM. |

Richard Johns 1873 Missing Umpire
Richard Johns was President of the Baltimore Fire Board from around 1911 until his death in 1916. His image appeared in the following photo from the Baltimore American of January 21, 1912. The trick was figuring out where the second row started, with all those faces in the photo. The caption indicated that Richard Johns is third from the left in the second row.
The caption lists eight names in the front row. That fits. For reference purposes, the man fourth from the left in the front row is approximately in the center of the photo. His name is John Hubert. Based on head sizes and a photo comparison, I determined that the second row began with the fellow just behind and to the left of John Hubert. His face appears to almost be attached to Hubert's face. That is Stephen C. Little. A photo of Stephen C. Little is appended below to the right of the group photo. You can see that they are a reasonable match. So that means that Richard Johns is the man sitting back in the gap between the front row gentlemen Loden and Goldsborough. Richard Johns' photo is shown next below. Finally, I've repeated Richard's photo along with one of his brother, major leaguer Thomas Johns, to show a comparison that there is a brotherly resemblance. Al Barlick 1940
I've accumulated quite a pile of images, many in color, nearly all in action, of circa 1967 umpires.
They're hard to find, but if a game action photo has a date on it, even for a spring training game, you can usually figure out any umps that happen to be in the image. This is Barlick during the '67 World Series at Fenway, and in a magazine photo from the 1962 Opening of Dodger Stadium, along with Shag Crawford (1956) |

Shag Crawford 1956
Speaking of, here's the veteran NL arbiter (and father of ump Jerry Crawford) right off the cover of the April 9, 1961 Philadelphia Inquirer weekly magazine section. Color's a little off. On the other hand, it's color.

The former NL pitcher, behind the plate during a Dick Allen at bat at Shea Stadium in 1965, I believe.
