1992-1993 Expansion Teams Are:
The Colorado Rockies and the New York Islanders.
Both teams existed in the old WHA and failed to be accepted by the NHL. Now years later both are back!

1992-1993 Season in Review

Philly, Buffalo, Houston and Edmonton win the divisions.

Old WHA franchises Colorado and Long Island are back as expansion teams.

The Islanders, despite the NHL not having an expansion draft (I can't when admitting 2 at a time) finish 2nd in their division.

Perhaps "celebrating" the rebirth of two old WHA franchises the Edmonton Oilers become the first WHA team to lift the cup, defeating Buffalo in 7 games.

Einar Puvi of Edmonton wins his 3rd goalie of the year award.

23 yr old Brad Saurette of Vancouver wins his 2nd straight MVP.

1994-1995 Season Review

Rangers, Toronto, St. Louis and Vancouver win the divisions.

In the final Washington defeats Vancouver to win its first Cup! Only 2 behind arch rival Baltimore!

Jessy Lamoureux of Quebec retires at 2nd in all time points 1591 and 2nd all time in assists at 1088. Plagued by injuries he played a full schedule on ly 7 times in 21 years in Winnipeg and Quebec. He had 6 100 point seasons and his best was 134 (still a league record) in his rookie year.

Pier-Olivier St-Laurent of Baltimore also retires but at 3rd in all time points at 1588 (3 behind Lamoureux) and first in all time assists at 1164. A consistent performer but never really an all star he finished with 100 points only once in his 22 year career with Edmonton, Washington and Baltimore.

1998 and 1999 Expansions

We will again expand by 4 teams, 2 in 98 and 2 in 99. A western team and an eastern team will be added each year.

All population figures are for 1990 and are urban areas

Vote for 2 in the west and 2 in the east!

Western candidates are:

Anaheim – LA has 11.4 Million - LA once had a 2nd team, they can do it again!

Kansas City – 1.2 million - Kemper arena may be old but they packed the house for the WHA team that played and lost in the Stanley Cup several times.

Milwaukee – 1.2 million - had a WHA team and the Bradley Center has been waiting and waiting…

Nashville – almost 600 thousand but booming – never had a team. C’mon country music and hockey go together!

Oklahoma City – 800 thousand - have a new arena on the way they just need a team! Or maybe they can steal an NBA franchise from someone.

Phoenix – 2.0 million - Never had a team and there is an arena!

Portland – 1.1 million - Briefly had a WHA team and have a brand new arena.

Salt Lake – 800 thousand - Never had a team but they have an arena and winter!!!

Eastern Candidates are:

Atlanta – 2.1 million - has a WHA team and the new arena will be ready in 99.

Columbus – 900 thousand - never had a team and arena is ready in 2000. Could play in Cincy’s old arena in the interim. But is it too close to Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Indy?

Hamilton – almost 600 thousand but everyone is a hockey fan - still waiting and has an arena. Extremely jealous of Ottawa, Winnipeg and Quebec.

Miami – 3.1 million with Fort Lauderdale - Had a WHA team. There will be new arenas in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale

New Jersey – New York area has 16 million - Never had a team on the Jersey side of greater NY. They have an arena.

Norfolk, Virginia – 1.3 million - already have a name (Hampton Roads Rhinos) they just need an arena!

Raleigh – 500 thousand with Durham and growing fast. - never had a team – will have an arena by 99. C’mon give them a team they’re not a bunch of jerks!

Tampa – 1.7 million - never had a team, they have an arena and they have a bunch of Canadians wintering there every year.

So VOTE!

By the way, who are the Flyers' point leaders? How many career goals does that Richardson guy who kept getting 40-50 goals in a season have?

In his brief 13 years all with the Flyers, Richardson ended up as their leader in goals, and points and was 2nd in assists.

1998-1999 Season Revies

Expansion is delayed a year as I accidentally played a year too far and don't have a save I can go back to.

Philly Quebec, Indy and Seattle win the divisions.

St. Louis defeats the Rangers to win its 12th Cup , though 4 were in Ottawa before the move.

On to Expansion!!!

1999-2000 Season Review

Hamilton and Kansas City join the NHL. As expected both finish last in their divisions.

Washington, Cleveland, Dallas, Vancouver win the divisions.

Vancouver defeats Cleveland to win its first Cup!

Tuomas Puttonern of Cleveland sets a new NHL record for points in a season with 137! (52G 85A). He also wins MVP.

Alex Beirnes of Chicago (and long time Washington Capital) moves into 2nd all-time in goals with 655 only 9 behind all time leader Charles Haley.

The 2000-2001 Expansion Teams have been announced!

While the expansion committee had an easy time recommending Hamilton and Kansas City last year the committee was sharply divided this year.

In the West the committee was divided between:

Milwaukee – 1.2 million - had a WHA team and the Bradley Center has been waiting and waiting…

Nashville – almost 600 thousand but booming – never had a team. C’mon country music and hockey go together!

Portland – 1.1 million - Briefly had a WHA team and have a brand new arena.

In the East the committee was divided between:

Atlanta – 2.1 million - has a WHA team and the new arena will be ready in 99.

Norfolk, Virginia – 1.3 million - already have a name (Hampton Roads Rhinos) they just need an arena!

As Commissioner I must break the tie. After considering geography and the US TV market (hey Hamilton, Quebec and Winnipeg all have teams so no complaints from Canada eh?) the expansion teams are:

Portland Buckaroos and Atlanta Thrashers!
