A Baseball Story
***This is a work of fiction. I am historically accurate when it is convenient to the story.
It all started….well that is the problem isn’t it? Nobody rightly knows when or where it actually started. In our absolute fanaticism for truth, we want to pin down a person, detail, or moment that we can attribute to the absolute start of this great game that we now call baseball. It simply isn’t that simple. Nothing with history is. In reality it is a long, slow, chaotic road that leads us to where we are today with most things. What historical factors played into games adapting the way they did over time? Why were bat and ball games “chosen” recreation in the first place? So many questions with so little in the form of concrete answers leads to mystery. Mystery is what leads to the romanticism. And baseball may have cornered the market on both. We pick up our story in the late 1850’s. By this point bat and ball games have found a healthy footing with the adult leisure class of the country. Bat and ball games became less of a children’s only exercise and more of a way for adults to reintroduce themselves to nature, exercise, and community through scheduled contests. Amateur teams began popping up as early as the 1840’s in many different areas across the country. Although the “Cartwright” rules were in existence by the mid to late 1840’s they weren't considered formal binding law. Contests could look quite different from place to place. As the country grew and people from the Northeast began migrating West they brought various versions of the game with them. Sometimes these rules were accepted; more often than not however, rules were morphed with an already existing set to create unique brands. As games grew in popularity the natural progression was for clubs to agree upon a specific set of rules for competition. Which takes us to the fateful day of January 22nd 1857. This was the day a group of clubs in New York formally created an amateur league that would follow a specific set of rules. The rules were published in many New York publications and news traveled fast. What happened next was pretty unique. Published rules acted as a constitution for many and gave the game a level of legitimacy. Instead of clubs in other parts of the country adapting their own sets of rules, they preferred to adopt the New York version. Although it may seem like this is a brand new story, it has actually been in progress for much longer. |

A list of thanks
Visually this dynasty report could not happen without the great work from a variety of artist's in the OOTP community. I have borrowed extensively from Txranger, No Pepper, and Robo to name a few. I want to thank all of the OOTP artists out there that allow us to breathe life into our dynasty reports through their art.
As we pick up the story in 1857 we will be concentrating on the following established leagues: |

The idea
This will be my third dynasty report. My first was a pretty big failure. I took it from the perspective of a single player living in an OOTP world. The problem was that I never edited the player and I was playing in the dead ball era. So my guy just sat on the reserve roster going nowhere. Maybe I will go back one day and give him a ratings bump and see where it goes.
My second dynasty report I had a lot of fun with. I was the gm in a fictional world. I took a historically struggling team and attempted to lead them to a championship. The only reason I stopped this report was because I won the title after 2 seasons. I was hoping it would take longer. One thing I did learn from that experience is that I really became immersed in the league as a whole and was becoming more interested in the direction of the league as opposed to one specific team. Which planted the seeds for this report. With this dynasty report I will act as the eye in the sky. I wanted to create an environment that loosely attempted to create the wild beginnings of early baseball. I want to see how the league grows. Who folds? Which leagues will merge or fold entirely? Who will become the legends in such a scenario? How will world events contribute to things? So I am going to let the teams play and inject story lines as needed. The focus will not be on any one team, player, or league. I will let the engine dictate where the focus will be at any one point. So as we begin in 1857, I want to stress that the landscape and mindset is different. There will be no mention of owners. Nobody owns these teams. These teams will truly work as amateur associations. They don’t trade with each other and there is no such thing as free agency. This is not a professional league; players are not getting paid. They are strictly clubs in the truest sense of the word. |

No, it is not. I feel that league evolution is too random for what I want to do. Also, evolution grows your league. In some cases leagues may retract and become non-existent. I will basically let the engine play out the games and what not but I will ultimately decide how things develop geographically.

April 4th 1857
April 4th 1857. Spring un-officially rips the season’s grip from winter. Long months of indoor solitude are about to come to an end. Base Ball, under a set of new codified laws, is ready to begin.

New York League
After the first month of the season the Brooklyn Atlantics have been very proficient at the bat and also feature an excellent hurler in Samuel Kent. They are currently tied for first position with the Elizabeth Resolutes.
The power of young Abraham Potter has been instrumental in Elizabeth's early success. The Eckfords of Brooklyn are proficient defensively which has made up for their inability to score runs. Brooklyn Excelsior hurler Thomas Flanders has been very inconsistent during the first month of the season. Hoboken has been excellent with the hands but horrible at the bat. All three New York clubs have yet to produce the type of hurling required to win contests. |

Albany has jumped out to a perfect start to the season thanks in large part to the hurling of Harrison Campbell. The club is also very good at the bat averaging 11 runs scored per contest as well.
Right behind Albany in the standings is the high powered offensive attack of the Hartford Dark Blues. Joshua Hopkins and Robert Moreland have led the club in this category thus far. Run prevention has been the formula for Providence early on this season. Both Boston clubs are middle of the pack in most everything they do. That is of course with the exception of Issac Town from the Boston Base Ball Club. He has been an absolute terror at the bat. So far this season he has collected 14 hits in 19 chances. Sub-par defense is the reason behind Middletown's middling start. New Haven= poor defense and poor hurling. David Bright has been solid as a hurler this season. The team behind him and at the bat have not. |

Washington can hit, run, hurl and steal. The only deficiency they seem to have is at the defensive end. It was a major factor in their only defeat of the season.
Sharing top position with Washington is the Baltimore Base Ball Club. This team does it a little differently from Washington. They struggle at the bat but are strong in the field. The Baltimore Canaries are one of four clubs with even records thus far. Unless the Canaries figure out their hurling issues they will not be even for much longer. The Base Ball Club of Philadelphia is one of the more feared clubs when it comes to offense. Unfortunately, it is said that their opponents fight over who will gain the box first to take advantage of their awful hurling. The Philadelphia Centennials feature 2B John Armstrong who has accumulated more hits than any other player in the league. The Centennials have also been solid in the field which has kept them in matches. The last of the 2-2 clubs is the Wilmington Nine who are exactly middling in all aspects thus far this campaign. The Baltimore Towsons have struggled to score runs early on and with middle of the road hurling it may be a recipe for disaster long term. The Philadelphia Whites are the mirror image of the Philadelphia Base Ball Club. The Whites can hurl but struggle so mightily at the bat that one win is all they have mustered so far this season. |
