The OOTP 13 Laundry League Dynasty Reports

This is the thread where Gary and I will post our reports about the Seamheads Laundry League.

Background about the league is in a prior post. We have a bunch of bloggers, podcasters, and other folks involved in this, including three ex-Major Leaguers -- Jeff Montgomery, Don Stanhouse, and Lary Sorensen -- and Eric Karabell and Jerry Crasnick from ESPN. Pro wrestler Steve Corino, who recently started playing OOTP, has taken over for John D'Acquisto, who had to drop out.

I'll be writing about the NL while Gary will cover the AL. We also encourage you to follow us on Twitter, where updates will be posted too: @Maxito4000 and @ootpbaseball.

SLL NL Report, 5/11/12

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 5/11/12:

As the Seamheads Laundry League (SLL) season gets underway, it's become clear that the Pittsburgh Pirates are emerging as the team to beat in the National League. They've posted an amazing 27-5 record so far, led by a pair of Chiefs: Chief Bender's 6-1 record with a 2.64 ERA in eight starts has anchored the pitching rotation while catcher Chief Meyers' .402 batting average, with 5 home runs and 25 RBI, has led the hitting attack. Bender won the SLL NL Pitcher of the Month Award for April.

Lefty Ray Collins is also getting it done on the pitching side, posting a 6-0 record with a 2.39 ERA. Sam McDowell has had some tough luck in his seven starts, with a 3-2 record, but he leads the starters with a 2.34 ERA. Eric Gagne already has 12 saves in 15 appearances; his ERA is 1.80 and his WHIP is 0.87.

"The key to our team's early success is strong starting pitching," said team GM John Farris. "Our starters are a combined 21-5 with an ERA of 2.95. When your starters can set the tempo like that, it allows the team to control the game from the start."

Among the hitters, Tris Speaker is just behind Meyers with a .379 batting average, while Robinson Cano and Tony Fernandez have posted .310 and .318 averages, respectively. Gil Hodges is the team leader with 8 home runs.

The Bucs have the largest division lead of any SLL team, with an eight-game edge over the 19-13 Milwaukee Brewers. The St. Louis Cardinals have had the misfortune of not only posting the worst NL record so far at 10-22 but also doing so in the same division as the Pirates, leaving them 17 games back.

The Cardinals' pitching staff has let them down big time: their starter with the best ERA is Tex Hughson at 4.57, and only Mark Langston has been able to muster a pair of wins so far among the starters, to go with his 5.93 ERA. Langston is 1-2 with a 9.45 ERA in his past three games. Closer Mariano Rivera actually leads the team with three wins, althrough his ERA is 5.27 and he only has five saves in 13 appearances.

Catcher Joe Torre is a bright spot on the team, with a .384 batting average, and Babe Ruth has performed to expectations, posting a .310 average with six home runs out of the third spot in the lineup.

"You know, I'm not all that worried about the Cards at this time," said team GM Bill Ivie. "We've got some guys in a slump, but it's a long season and the pendulum will swing our way eventually. The Pirates have had a great month. We've been pretty bad. But all-in-all, we could have a great month in June and we will be right back in the race. After all, this is a marathon, not a sprint."

Other NL News of Note:

The SLL NL Batter of the Month Award for April went to the Miami Marlins' Stan Musial. He hit .352 for the month, with eight home runs and 21 RBI.

The Colorado Rockies' Russ Ford struck out 16 San Diego Padres en route to a complete game 7-2 win on May 7. He's 4-1 so far this year, with a 2.35 ERA.

The Marlins' Chris Carpenter blanked the Mets on May 11, going the distance while allowing just two hits and three walks en route to a 5-0 victory. He's 5-1 with a 3.88 ERA this year.

After the Pirates' 10-3 win over the Houston Astros on May 11, the Bucs' Frank Chance and the Astros' Hippo Vaughn were each suspended three games for their involvement in a brawl. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Vaughn had allowed a solo home run to Pedro Guerrero and a two-run shot to Chief Meyers before plunking Chance with a 2-2 fastball that he later said got away from him. Chance charged the mound, but order was soon restored. Both players were ejected.

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 11/28/12

The competitive situation in the Seamheads Laundry League (SLL) National League has tightened considerably since the last report on Nov. 16. The Pittsburgh Pirates started the season 27-5 but hit an 11-16 skid that saw their division lead shrink to four games over the Chicago Cubs. The latest Weekly Team Power Rankings saw the Bucs in fifth while the surging San Diego Padres, owners of an NL-best 40-21 record, are in first place on that list.

The Padres have opened an eight-game lead over the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, the best margin of any SLL club, but that hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of new San Francisco Giants GM Steve Corino, who inherited a team with an SLL-worst 19-42 record. The Giants are 21 games out of first place, the biggest deficit of any team.

"It truly is going be a trial-and-error period for me and the Giants," said Corino, who only recently started playing Out of the Park Baseball but has become addicted to the game. "Learning the game from the ground up, I know I am going to make mistakes, but you can only go up, right?"

Corino is no stranger to intense competition: he's a professional wrestler with four world heavyweight championships to his credit. Asked why he began playing OOTP, he replied: "I have been a huge baseball fan since I was about 4 years old. Die-hard Phillies fan and grew up with the Cubs on WGN. For years I played the old APBA Baseball dice game but was excited when a fan of mine via Twitter turned me onto OOTP. I downloaded it on Thanksgiving and haven't stopped playing since!"

Barely ahead of the Giants are the Arizona Diamondbacks, whose 20-40 record has them 19.5 games behind the Padres. While the team has mostly underperformed on the pitching mound and at the plate, the Diamondbacks have also been the victim of several injuries, with left fielder George Stone and starting pitcher Bruce Hurst both lost for eight to nine months, second baseman Bip Roberts sidelined for three weeks, and reliever Rich "Goose" Gossage out for three months.

"I hate to make excuses, but the injuries have killed us," said Diamondbacks GM Michael Dobreski. "On paper back in Spring Training, it was clear to us that we were one of the best teams in the league, but it just has not worked out so far. We will get healthy and we feel that our talented players will start to produce like they are supposed to. We are definitely in a hole but it is a long season. For now, we are calling up Hoot Evers and Heine Groh, who are just killing the ball down in Reno. We will give them a shot and hopefully they can inject a little life into us."

Frustrations at the plate and on the mound have also plagued the Philadelphia Phillies, who are hanging around in a tight NL East race that has them at 28-34, 6.5 games behind the first place Miami Marlins. GM Eric Karabell commented: "Very disappointed in the Phillies so far. Can’t do much about losing Mickey Mantle for seven weeks, but to be 15th in the NL in OPS stinks. I’ve tried nearly all hitters and pitchers by this point, and will continue tinkering, but this team has no plate patience, speed or starting pitching depth."

The Atlanta Braves currently reside in the NL East basement (24-37, 10 games out), despite having Cy Young, Hank Greenberg, and Joe DiMaggio on the roster. Young has disappointed so far with his 2-10 record and 5.64 ERA, while Greenberg's 11 home runs lead the team despite his .194 batting average. DiMaggio, however, has posted a respectable .286 batting average with 60 games under his belt.

"The pitching is the key to our turnaround," said Braves GM Michael Engel. "You look up and down and those are some serious names on our roster, but for whatever reason, nobody's turned the light on this year. Losing Bucky Walters is rough, but I think we'll get things going in the right direction. It's a long season and talent rises to the top." Walters had a 3-4 record with a 7.58 ERA before being sidelined for five months.

In other NL news of note:

The St. Louis Cardinals' Nellie Fox saw his hitting streak reach 29 games before an 0-for-3 performance against the Cleveland Indians during interleague play.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' Robin Yount came close to matching Fox's feat: he hit safely in 26 straight games before an 0-for-4 against the Houston Astros ended his run.

The SLL NL Batter of the Month Award for May went to the Houston Astros' Cy Seymour. He hit .397 for the month, with three home runs and 12 RBI. The center fielder is hitting .387 for the season.

The SLL NL Pitcher of the Month Award for May went to Pittsburgh Pirates starter Al Downing, who posted a 5-1 record with a 2.44 ERA and 17 walks and 42 strikeouts in 44.1 innings. He's 7-2 overall with a 3.11 ERA.

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/5/12

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/5/12

The Seamheads Laundry League (SLL) National League races have begun to open up since the last report: all three division leaders are up by at least six games each as of July 5. The Pittsburgh Pirates have regained the top record in the entire SLL (53-28), while the teams at the bottom of the standings have fallen further behind: the St. Louis Cardinals are 21.5 games behind the Pirates while the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants are 20 and 22.5 games, respectively, behind the San Diego Padres.

The Cardinals received some bad news on June 14 when they found out that left fielder Babe Ruth's shoulder injury would keep him out of the lineup for three weeks; he was among the team's top hitters at the time. "Babe Ruth going down is unfortunate , but I think we can make some adjustments and be okay," Cardinals GM Bill Ivie said at the time. "Honestly, we need our pitching staff to step up and pick up the hitters for a few weeks." Unfortunately, the Cardinals are coming off a 3-7 skid.

Injuries have also plagued the Giants, who learned on June 19 that Rogers Hornsby would be sidelined for six to seven weeks. "Losing someone of Hornsby's caliber is a big blow to our team," Giants GM Steve Corino said. "He is a leader on the field and in the locker room, but we have faith in Dan Uggla, and believe he is going to do a great job." Corino's faith has been rewarded: Uggla has hit .333, with three home runs, during his past six games.

The Giants' pitching staff has continued to struggle, but a pair of Corino moves in that area have also paid off and will hopefully spread to the rest of the team: Dontrelle Willis and Gary Nolan have 3-1 and 2-1 records, respectively, in the five starts each has made since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation.

Even the resurgent Pirates aren't immune to injuries, as GM John Farris noted: "One of the biggest problems we've had in this stretch has been some inopportune injuries. We had Braun and Tris Speaker on the DL during that rough stretch, and had to deal with a few slumps as well. We've made a few changes to regain our momentum, including placing Fred Toney in our 3rd starter spot from spot starter/bullpen. He's responded well, and our batting lineup changes have helped."

Farris added: "Our hitting is helping our starters out quite a bit, but we're going to keep watching the lineup and rotation over coming month, and who knows - we may be looking at a couple of deals before the deadline."

As this article was posted, the Padres found out they have lost first baseman Fred McGriff to a season-ending injury. He had primarily served as DH against right-handed starters, posting a .251 average with 7 home runs and 25 RBI.

Other NL News of Note:

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Smoky Joe Wood and Minnesota Twins center fielder Matt Kemp each earned eight-game suspensions for their fight on June 17. In the bottom of the third inning, Wood allowed a first-pitch three-run home run to Darrell Evans to open up a 3-1 lead for the Twins. Wood ran the count to 1-2 against the next batter, Kemp, before plunking him with a pitch. Kemp charged Wood, but order was quickly restored. Both players were ejected; the Brewers came back to win the game, 6-4.

On June 21, three-game suspensions were handed down to the Colorado Rockies' Burt Hooton and the Texas Rangers' Larry Walker after the two were involved in another fight following a hit batter. In that situation, Hooton surrendered a solo home run to the Rangers' George Brett in the bottom of the first inning. Walker was the next batter and was hit on a 1-1 pitch that likely got away from Hooton, but he charged the mound anyway. Both players were ejected, and the Rangers went on to win, 2-1.

The SLL NL Batter of the Month Award for June went to the Chicago Cubs' Lou Boudreau, who hit at a .400 clip with 3 home runs, 23 RBI, and 25 runs scored.

The SLL NL Pitcher of the Month Award for June was handed to starter Harry Breechen of the Padres. He notched a 5-0 record with a 1.35 ERA in 40 innings pitched.

Top two HR hitters in the league and they don't make the all star game (please ignore their poor averages)

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/14/12: Fights and More

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/14/12: Fights and More

With the end of July just a few days away, the Seamheads Laundry League (SLL) National League races have remain as open as they were in the last report: all three division leaders are up by at least six games each as of July 28. The Pittsburgh Pirates remain the team to beat in the entire SLL (63-36), and the teams that were struggling to climb the standings have slipped further in all three divisions:

•*The Phillies and Braves are 16 and 19.5 games out, respectively, in the NL East.

•*The Cardinals are 24.5 games out in the NL Central, the largest deficit for any SLL team.

•*The Giants and Diamondbacks continue to battle for the NL West basement, with the Giants 21 back and the Diamondbacks a half game behind them.

However, the Pirates suffered a blow on July 20 when starting pitcher Chief Bender was diagnosed with a torn labrum that will end his season. While his ERA had jumped to 4.92 from its early season low below 3.00, his record was 10-5 and he had fanned 150 batters in 135.1 innings.

"Bender's loss is a big one," said Pirates GM John Farris. "We have really strong pitching, but now our starting staff lacks depth. I'd like to try to swing a deal for a starter and possibly an outfielder if possible. We have lots of good hitting in the infield, and guys like Joe Gordon and Kelly Gruber waiting in the minors due to that depth, so nothing's out of question to solidify this team for the pennant run."

The Astros are currently 14 games behind the Pirates and have split the first two games of a key four-game series between the clubs. While the Astros' pitching has been mediocre, their hitting has carried the club, especially center fielder Cy Seymour, who leads the SLL with a .386 average and who was the MVP of the All-Star Game, won by the NL, 12-5.

"Cy has been amazing all season," said Astros GM Brandon Williams. "He's like clockwork, and for him to win MVP is a great moment not just for the National League, but for the Astros organization. He showed on the national stage just how great a hitter he is."

On July 17, the Astros' hitting suffered a blow when first baseman Don Mattingly was lost for four weeks with a torn quad. Williams commented: "Losing Don is a major hit, especially at a time where our pitching was finally showing progress. Cy, Don and Alan (Trammell) carried this team when the pitching wasn't there, and now losing Don stings. We're in a bind now, and we have to find contributors to replace Don."

Meanwhile, the Marlins have continued to on cruise control at the top of the NL East, with a 10-game lead over the Nationals and the Mets, the largest division lead of any SLL team. The Marlins have been injury-free, except for leadoff hitter Tim Raines' June 6 injury that left him sidelined for four months.

"I’m not terribly worried about the long-term loss of Tim Raines," Marlins GM Caley Roark said. "We have some decent replacements, including Ichiro, that can easily fill the hole (especially because Raines wasn’t having a terribly good year anyway, [with a .256 batting average])."

Roark added: "The Marlins are certainly riding our high powered offense, which is more than making up for some mediocre pitching. Stan 'The Man' is having a great year, which is sort of expected; however, I’m really liking the production from Cecil Cooper and Brian Roberts (in a platoon role). Pitching-wise, things can get better, especially in terms of the starters’ ERA."

Over in the NL West, the Dodgers are six games behind the Padres, who had opened a large lead earlier in the season before stumbling and then regaining their footing. Dodgers GM Steve Malinowski said: "While we are making a run, I am hoping the team can up our overall batting average a bit as .265 isn't cutting it. Though Schmitty and Gentile are giving us great power leading both leagues in HR, I need them to give me a little bit more consistency when at the plate. It's a long season and as long as we keep pace, I am confident we can take the division."

Other NL News of Note:

The All-Star Game on July 10 was won by the NL, 12-5. The AL opened a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but the NL came back to take the lead and sealed the game with a five-run seventh, highlighted by Tony Perez's two-run triple and Cecil Cooper's first-pitch two-run home run.

The SLL continues to take a tough stand on brawls, handing down 10-game suspensions to Phillies pitcher Andy Coakley and and Brewers left fielder Ellis Burks for their part in fight on July 23. In the top of the fourth inning, Earl Torgeson's two-run home run tied the game at 4-4 for the Brewers, and Coakley plunked Burks with his next pitch. Burks hesitated for a second but charged the mound after Coakley gave him the "Come on" sign. Both benches cleared but order was soon restored and no one else was ejected.

SLL American League mid-season update:

At this point in the season it appears the Yankees (57-45) are in cruise control in the AL East with an 8 game lead over the Jays and 8.5 over the Orioles. Owner Jay Ferraro has been pretty happy with the squad but at the same time has been shopping around to bolster thier teams playoff chances. When asked about his team, Jay replied "Our team has started the campaign strong even with some of our star players stumbling out of the gate. Being able to have Bob Gibson take the bump every fifth day is something special!"

The Yanks offense has been paced by the Big Klu! Ted Kluszewski has smashed 24 HR (2nd in the SLL) and driven in 82 RBI (3rd in the SLL)!

The KC Royals (63-39) are doing most everything right this season and hold the AL's best record. Not hard to understand when they have a solid starting staff and have three pitchers in double digits in Spud Chandler (12-2), Bob Veale (11-6) and Rube Waddell (11-5).

"Although it is still early in the season, we are happy with the way our pitching has performed. Going in, we knew that quality starting pitching would be the key. Now it will be important to monitor workloads so the arms can stay strong." said former Royals pitcher and team owner Jeff Mongomery.

While the KC Royals have a sound 5 game lead over the Indians at the present, they are not to be taken lightly. The Indians are hot again going 8-2 in their last 10 and have the manpower to make a run and currently hold a 1.5 game lead in the WC standings. Ted Williams is batting .353 for Cleveland.

The AL West has been a see-saw battle in recent weeks with the A's (59-43)and M's (58-47) taking turns in 1st place. The A's currently have a 2.5 game lead and have been one of the teams to beat! The Athletics 2B Tommy Harper has been hot lately batting .429 in his last five games. Jose Canseco has provided the power leading the team in HR with 21!

Oakland GM Shawn Anderson was pleased with the team's recent play and had this to say "The entire Oakland A's organization is happy to see the leadership that Jose Canseco has provided both on and off the field. Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/20/12

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 12/20/12

A chill may have descended over much of North America, but the dog days of August have begun in the Seamheads Laundry League (SLL), and the National League has seen the Pirates lose 8 of their past 10 games while the Cubs' 7-3 run has put them just one game out of first place.

The Bucs were 18-4 at the end of April and seemed near-invincible, but they played .500 ball in July, posting a 13-13 record, and their 2-5 start to August has extended the slide. Starting pitching seems to be the culprit: their starters' 4.48 ERA is 10th in the NL. Interestingly, though, the team's bullpen leads the NL with a 3.34 ERA; perhaps some shuffling is in store for the pitching staff.

Meanwhile, the Cubs haven't been dominant, but they've played consistent baseball, posting a winning record each month. Chicago is relying on a power hitting lineup led by third baseman Tony Perez's 22 home runs and a pitching staff whose 4.00 ERA is tops in the NL. "We're really excited about how we've been playing," said Cubs GM Eric Beato. "The Pirates got off to such an incredible start that we were just trying to keep them in our sights."

He added: "But with guys like Maddux and Boudreau, we knew we weren't out of it. Those two guys, plus Perez and McCarver, have carried us. If we can continue getting good outings and timely hits, hopefully, we can finish strong and catch the Bucs."

The Cubs' 64-46 record is third-best in the NL, but the Reds are breathing down their necks at 63-49, just two games behind them and three out of first place. Both teams are in the lead for the wild card spot, if the Pirates can reverse their tailspin and maintain first place.

Over in the NL East, the Marlins are five games ahead of the Mets, while the Padres are 3.5 games in front of the Dodgers. The NL has turned out to be the better hitting league than the AL, with the Astros' Cy Seymour leading the whole SLL with a .384 batting average. The Pirates' Chief Meyers is just behind him, however, at .377. Tony Gwynn's .347 average leads the AL; he would rank fifth in the NL.

Other NL News of Note:

The Mets' Ken Griffey Jr., Thurman Munson and Albert Pujols put on a hitting clinic during their team's 20-4 drubbing of the Padres on Aug. 4. Each of them had five-hit performances, and the Mets knocked out 28 hits in all. Amazingly, they only hit one home run, a solo shot from Ryne Sandberg in the fourth inning.

Astros center fielder Cy Seymour was the NL Batter of the Month for July. He hit .454 and knocked in 21 runs.

Astros closer Rob Dibble joined his teammate, earning NL Pitcher of the Month honors for July. He was 3-1 with eight saves and a 3.38 ERA, a performance that helped steady a rocky season. It was not known if he keeps a fake grenade in his locker in Houston.

Seamheads AL Christmas break report!

AL Update - Dec 29th

As we enjoy the Christmas break in the Seamheads Laundry League, the Bronx Bombers continue to enjoy a big lead in the AL East, but the fact is, the other divisional opponents are all sub .500 teams. As long as they stay injury free, the East should be theirs to lose.

Who’s hot:

Yanks 1B Ted Kluszewski .414, 3 HR Last 7 games

The Royals continue to hold the lead in the AL Central, but that lead has shrunk by 1.5 games with the pesky Indians staying chase. The key to the Royal’s success this season has been pitching and having the League leading saves leader never hurts. John Wetteland has racked up 32 saves in 52 appearances with a 1.61 ERA.

Who’s hot:

Royals LHP Warren Spahn 1-0, 1.50 Last 3 games
Royals LHP Clayton Kershaw 3-0, 1.61 Last 4 games

Speaking of pitching, the Indians have had dominant pitching from their #1 and one of the Seamheads best in Bert Blyleven (15-3, 3.34 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) and having a lineup that boasts Ted Williams (.348 BAVG) and Tony Gwynn (.351 BAVG) doesn’t make things any easier for the Royals.

Who’s hot:

Indians RHP Jack Kramer 4-0, 1.35 Last 6 starts

The A’s are now enjoying a bit of cushion in the AL West with a 3.5 game lead on the Mariners. They are a team built around hitting and speed as they are first in the AL in BAVG, Hits, Runs and SB! Things will get tougher over the next week, as the will be facing both the AL Central’s best in KC and Cleveland.

Who’s hot:

A’s LF Bibb Falk .550, 0 HR Last 6 games
A’s 1B Harry H Davis .400, 3 HR Last 7 games

The Mariners seem to be over their slump going 7-3 in their last 10 games and have a chance to make ground playing two sub .500 teams in the Rays and Twins. While the M’s big masher Howard Johnson (.203 BAVG, 24 HR and 91 RBI) isn’t hitting for average, he is clutch with runners in scoring position driving in 72 of his 91 RBI. Let’s hope he stays healthy!

Who’s hot? How about who’s not!

2B Craig Biggio .100, 0 HR Last 5 games

Key injuries in the American League:

Rays -
LF Rickey Henderson torn anterior cruciate ligament 3 months
CF Bobby Thomson dislocated shoulder 2-3 months

Red Sox -
2B Sammy Strang broken bone in elbow 6-7 months
LF Barry Bonds fractured finger 4-5 week

Royals -
CF Andre Dawson diagnosis pending

White Sox -
P Darren Holmes partially torn labrum 3 months

Tigers -

P Gaylord Perry shoulder inflammation 5 weeks
P Dennys Reyes shoulder inflammation 3-4 months
SS Jose Valentin sprained knee 3 weeks

Oakland -

P Charles Nagy elbow inflammation 2-3 months

Rangers -

P Larry Anderson elbow surgery 2 months
P Roger Nelson torn elbow ligament 8-9 months
LF Riggs Stephenson strained groin 4-5 weeks

Angels -

1B Willie McCovey torn posterior cruciate ligament 7 months

Additional tidbits:

Harry Lumley of the Baltimore Orioles earned the AL Player of the Week for the week of August 10th! Lumley batted a lofty .458 average (11-24), collecting 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

C Javy Lopez of the New York Yankees takes home the AL Player of the Week Award for the week of August 3rd!

Baltimore Orioles: Jason Kendall goes 1 for 3 against the Kansas City Royals, extending his hitting streak to 20 games!

New York Yankees: Eddie Cicotte pitches a 5-hit shutout against the Toronto Blue Jays with 6 strikeouts and 3 BB allowed!

Oakland Athletics: Don Drysdale pitches a 2-hit shutout against the Los Angeles Angels with 8 strikeouts and 1 BB allowed!

Le question de jour???

Can the dominant pitching of Bert Blyleven win himself the AL Cy Young award when Cy Young is also playing in this league?

Join us again on Jan 1st, 2013 when league action resumes!

Happy New Year from the Seamheads Laundry League!

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 1/7/13

Seamheads Laundry League - NL Report, 1/7/13

As real world baseball begins gearing up for pitchers and catchers to report, the Seamheads Laundry League (SLL) has headed into the final month of the season. The Cubs' momentum from the last report has continued: they're now tied with the Pirates for first place in the NL Central.

"We gotta play 'em one day at a time," said cautiously optimistic Cubs GM Eric Beato. "We're just happy to be here and hope guys can help the ball club. We just wanna give it our best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out."

The Cubs have been relatively healthy, but injuries have wracked the Pirates, who find themselves knotted up with the Cubs after leading the NL Central for much of the season. Starting pitcher Chief Bender remains on the DL, and closer Eric Gagne was just lost for the rest of the season, taking his 31 saves and 2.72 ERA with him. Meanwhile, Tris Speaker and Tony Fernandez are both sidelined, likely until the playoffs start. Speaker was hitting .343, Fernandez .357.

"Having Speaker out until likely the playoffs, and losing Bender for the season have hurt. Our team is still playing well, but we have to make adjustments to make up for those losses," said Pirates GM John Farris. "The Cubs are a good team; it's going to be a battle to the end. However, the Cubs aren't all we have to worry about - we have good teams in the Mets and Reds right on our heels in the Wild Card race."

He added: "This is going to the wire, and we hope to get back on top in the Central and avoid that one game playoff for the Wild Card. Hopefully, a few adjustments in the batting order will complement the adjustments in the rotation that are working well in the short term."

While the Padres have maintained a healthy margin, with a seven-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West, the NL East has also turned into a dead heat as the Mets and Marlins find themselves tied. The Marlins led the division for much of the season, but they recently lost two of three against the Mets, including a 13-5 drubbing in the second game.

"There's not a lot to do, really," Marlins GM Caley Roark replied when asked what he plans to do about his struggling pitching staff. "My minor league pitchers aren't faring much better. LaMarr Hoyt has been struggling, so it's probably time to demote him for Otto Hess." Hoyt gave up a pair of runs in relief during that 13-5 loss, seeing his ERA balloon to 8.21 in 68 innings pitched this year.

"Other than that," Roark continued, "I have to hope that my offense continues to produce, especially guys like Brian Roberts and Ichiro. With six guys hitting over 15 home runs, I need to rely on those guys who can simply get on base." Right fielder Stan Musial has done both so far this year, leading the team with 26 home runs while hitting .337 and earning himself the NL Batter of the Month Award for August. Meanwhile, first baseman Cecil Cooper recently had his 28-game hitting streak stopped -- he's hitting .373 this season.

Other NL News of Note:

The SLL NL President has kept his hardline stance against fighting, suspending Nationals pitcher Ed Walsh and and Giants first baseman Johnny Mize five games each for their part in an August 14 brawl. The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Nationals starter Johan Santana was pulled for reliever Ed Walsh after intentionally walking Chipper Jones to load the bases.

Walsh plunked Mize with his first pitch, a move that seemed accidental given the situation, but Mize tossed his bat toward Walsh as he trotted to first and the two exchanged words. Walsh refused to back down and Mize charged. After order was restored, both players were ejected and Troy Glaus came home with what proved to be the winning run.

In addition to Musial winning the NL Batter of the Month Award for August, the Padres' Nolan Ryan earned the NL Pitcher of the Month Award, thanks to his 5-1 record with a 2.54 ERA. Ryan had a couple tough months and is 13-10 this year, with a 4.90 ERA, but he has struck out 218 batters in 181.2 innings pitched while allowing just 168 hits.

AL Update: 01/13/2013

AL Update - Jan 13, 2013

With the season winding down the playoff picture is starting to become a little clear. Barring a major collapse, the Yankees will take the AL East. Even with recent struggles, their magic number is now at four. The Yanks will play the next four at home before heading to Minnesota to face the Twins.

Sitting up in his luxury box at Yankee Stadium, a smiling Jay Ferraro was ecstatic about a possible playoff berth and run "Our boys have battled all year against some pretty impressive teams stacked with all-time best talent. Even with a comfortable divisional lead heading into October, we are very focus on our ultimate goal of winning the Seamheads World Series Championship."

The Royals have a six game lead on the Indians who will be heading to KC for a big 3 game weekend showdown that could have a huge impact on this race. The Royals are hurting at the moment with Andre Dawson, Gary Carter and Spud Chandler out of the lineup.

We caught up with general manager Jeff Montgomery who had this to say about his club “"As we head down the stretch we certainly hope our arms hold up as they have during the bulk of the season. Our pitching has been a huge key to our success up to this point and we need it to continue to carry our club. We know the Indians are a team that will not give up as we edge closer to the end of the season."

While the Mariners held the division lead most of the season, the Oakland A’s now appear to finally have a grasp on the AL West with a five game lead. The M’s may have to duke it out with Cleveland for the AL Wildcard, but as we have seen in recent months, no lead is necessarily safe!

Oakland has been getting some timely hitting and pitching recently going 8-2 in their last 10. Dizzy Dean is 5-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last 6 starts!

In a league which features many of the best players in the history of baseball, the LA Angels on paper should have challenged for the AL West. They have a formidable staff in Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller, Bobby Ojeda and Babe Adams. A lineup that featured Hanley Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, Sam Crawford, and Frankie Frisch, but the biggest loss was the injury to slugging 1B Willie McCovey. Or perhaps they are just in one tough division! The ever positive GM Dan Heaton on his team "It was time to make some big changes, and we're seeing positive results. We're 12-7 since the major lineup adjustments, though we still have a long road ahead to get back in the hunt".

Batting Title:

The race to the AL batting crown looks like it is down to the following 3!

G. Brett TEX .358
B. Dickey BOS .356
T. Williams CLE .349

Pitching Wins:

B. Blyleven CLE 17
D. Dean OAK 16
R. Waddell KC 16
J. Richard CHA 15
V. Blue OAK 14

Notable performances:

Oakland SP Vida Blue punched out 15 Tigers in a 6-5 win over Detroit. In 34 starts this season Blue has notched a 14-9 record and a 4.61 ERA.

1B Mike Jorgensen of the Cleveland Indians wins the SLL AL Player of the Week Award.

Oakland Athletics: Jose B Reyes goes 5-5 against the Los Angeles Angels, with 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI and 2 R.

Kansas City Royals: Rube Waddell strikes out 17 in a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

3B George Brett of the Texas Rangers wins the SLL AL Player of the Week Award.

Chicago White Sox: Todd Helton goes 5-6 against the Detroit Tigers, with 1 3B, 1 RBI and 2 R.

AL Playoff Tiebreaker - 01/20/2013

Regular season is now over and we had a wild finish in the AL West! With the Mariners trailing the A's by 2 games with a week left in the season Seattle took 2 of 3 against the A's in Oakland. Seattle would then sweep the Angels and Oakland lost 2 of 3 against Texas setting up a one game playoff to determine the division winner. Fortunately for the loser they would be heading to the playoffs by virtue of the wildcard.

Tiebreaker:

A’s Dizzy Dean (17-11) vs M’s Scott Garrelts (9-10)

In front of 34,729 playoff crazy fans at the Oakland County Coliseum, Dizzy was dazzling scattering 10 hits over 8 IP striking out 10 holding the Mariners hitless in a 7-0 victory over Seattle.

The A’s get to Garrelts in the bottom half of the 2nd when Bibb Falk drove in Chuck Knoblauch with a double followed by a 2 run shot by Tommy Harper. Knoblauch would score again in the 4th on a single by Ivan Rodriguez.

The Chuck Knoblauch show wasn’t over as he led off the 6th with a walk, stole second and scored on a Renteria single.

The A’s would add insult to injury tacking on two more runs with one in the 7th (Rodriguez on a WP) and one in the 8th!

Stay tuned for more reports including a playoff preview!
