Breaking down the Cleveland Indians position-by-position for the 2019 season

Jordan Luplow and Indians teammates stand at attenion Sunday for the nathional anthem in Glendale, Ariz. (Sue Ogrocki, Associated Press)

It takes more than 25 players to get through a 162-game season

ARLINGTON, Tex. -- It doesn’t take a village to get through a big-league season. Well, maybe a small village. The point being that the 25 players who open the season tend to multiply as the season gets longer. Players get injured, some get traded, some get sent to the minors and others get released. Reinforcements are always needed.

Last year the Indians used 51 players in the regular season so it’s important to have a farm system with deep roots. Here is a position-by-position look at the Indians as they enter the 2019 season starting with the big-league club. Then we’ll take a look at where they might get immediate help and help that is farther down the road in the minor league system.

Right-hander Mike Clevinger. (Ross D. Franklin, Associated Press)

STARTING ROTATION

The rotation is set to open the season. Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco, Mike Clevinger and Shane Bieber form one of the best units in the big leagues. Not only did they go 76-42 with the second lowest ERA in the AL at 3.39 last year, they were durable. Kluber led the AL with 215 innings followed by Clevinger with 200, Carrasco with 192, Bauer with 175 1/3 and Bieber with 114 1/3. The Indians used just seven starters last year and four of them – Kluber, Bauer, Carrasco and Clevinger – each struck out 200 or more batters. It’s the first time that’s happened in big-league history.

Phone call away: Adam Plutko will open the year at Class AAA Columbus. If the Indians need another starter, he’ll be first in line. He bounced between Columbus and Cleveland six times last year so he’s got the routine down. Cody Anderson, Asher Wojciechowski, Jefry Rodriguez, Chih-Wei Hu and Shao-Ching Chiang are other possibilities depending how the rotation shakes out at Columbus. The Indians are still unsure how long it will take Anderson to get stretched out as he continues his return from Tommy John surgery.

Fire down below: Top prospect Triston McKenzie, who won’t open the minor-league season on time because of a sore right shoulder, Aaron Civale, Sam Hentges and Jake Paulson could provide help from Class AA Akron or Class A Lynchburg.

Oliver Perez. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer)

THE BULLPEN

The bullpen struggled last season, and a lot of the same arms are back. Still the relievers, as a group, pitched extremely well this spring. Brad Hand will close with Oliver Perez, Dan Otero, Adam Cimber, Jon Edwards, Tyler Olson and Neil Ramirez working the innings in front of him. The Indians lost Cody Allen and set-up man Andrew Miller to free agency over the winter. Hand assumes the closer’s job, but it’s unclear who will pitch in the set-up role. Look for manager Terry Francona to do a lot of mixing and matching unless someone emerges in that role.

Phone call away: Tyler Clippard could fill the set-up role depending on how quickly he recovers from a strained right pectoral muscle. He’s expected to open the season on a rehab assignment in Columbus after signing a minor league contract with the Tribe on Feb. 28. Nick Goody, Nick Wittgren, Henry Martinez and Brooks Pounders are other possibilities from Columbus. Goody was one of the last relievers optioned from big-league camp before the team left Arizona at the end of spring training. Wittgren, acquired from Miami just before camp opened, did a nice job as well.

Fire down below: Submariner Nick Sandlin, drafted last year, could help after pitching at four different levels last year. Hard-throwing James Karinchak, who got a couple of looks with the big-league club this spring, is on the radar as well.

Carlos Santana. (Ross D. Franklin, The Associated Press)

FIRST BASE

The Indians will have two new first basemen this year in Carlos Santana and Jake Bauers. They acquired Santana from Seattle and Bauers from Tampa Bay on Dec. 13. The switch-hitting Santana is expected to get most of the playing time. Santana hit a career-low .229 (128-for-560) last season with the Phillies, but walked 110 times, scored 82 runs and drove in 86 runs. Bauers made his big-league debut with the Rays last year. He hit .201, but showed power with 22 doubles, two triples and 11 homers. He played 76 games at first and 20 in the outfield.

Phone call away: Bobby Bradley, the Tribe’s third-round pick in 2014, is expected to open the season at Class AAA for the first time. The Indians want Bradley to find a happy medium with his weight, but he has shown power at every stop in his five years in the minors. Nellie Rodriguez is another power-hitter who could help.

Fire down below: The Indians acquired switch-hitter Wilson Garcia in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft in December. In 10 games with the big-league club this spring he hit .429 (6-for-14).

SECOND BASE

Normally, Jason Kipnis would be opening the season at second base, but he’s on the injured list with a strained right calf. On Sunday, on their last day in Arizona, the Indians signed free-agent Brad Miller, who opted out of his contract last week with the Dodgers after a strong showing in spring. Miller, a left-handed hitter, is expected to be the starting second baseman until Kipnis returns. The acquisition of Miller moves switch-hitter Max Moroff into a utility infielder’s role.
Indians acquired Moroff and outfielder Jordan Luplow from the Pirates in November for infielder Erik Gonzalez.
Kipnis injured his calf on March 20 and has been sidelined for seven to 10 days. He could rejoin the Indians sometime in mi-April for what could be his final season in Cleveland. It will be interesting to see what happens with Miller, who signed a big-league contract, and Moroff, who is out of options, when Kipnis returns.

Phone call away: Versatile Yu Chang will open the year at Columbus. He can play third, shortstop and second base. Last year he played 94 games at short, 23 at third and nine at second in Columbus. He went to the Arizona Fall League and hit .337 (29-for-86) with four homers and 17 RBI. Chang hit 13 homers last year at Columbus and 24 in 2017 at Class AA Akron. Versatile infielders Mark Mathias and Ernie Clement could help as well. Mathias is more of a second baseman and third baseman. Clement played shortstop at three different levels last year. He can also play second and third. They both performed well in big-league camp this spring.

Fire down below: The Indians have middle infielders all over the place in the low minors. One of them, Bryan Rocchio, started at shortstop Friday night against the Cubs in a split-squad Cactus League game. Rocchio, 18, tripled, singled and made a great diving stop near second base.

Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez. (Sue Ogrocki, Associated Press)

THIRD BASE

Two-time All-Star Jose Ramirez was scheduled to start at third base, but fouled a ball off his left knee on Sunday just before the Indians broke camp. While the Indians hit the road, Ramirez stayed in Goodyear to get treatment and it’s not known if he’ll be ready for Thursday’s season opener against the Twins at Target Field. The Indians flushed several of their high-priced hitters over the winter through trades and free agency. Ramirez is one of the few established hitters left in the lineup and he’s going to draw a lot of attention from opposing pitchers.

Phone call away: Chang will be in Columbus. He played mostly third base in the Arizona Fall League.

Fire down below: Nolan Jones, a second-round pick in 2016 by the Indians, played at Class A Lynchburg and Class A Lake County last year. Baseball America ranked him the Tribe’s No. 2 prospect entering the 2019 season.

Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor. (Ross D. Franklin, Associated Press)

SHORTSTOP

Francisco Lindor, the three-time All-Star shortstop, will not be opening the season on time. Lindor, like Kipnis, will open on the injured list with a strained right calf. He injured the calf before the start of spring training in February. The earliest he can rejoin the Indians is April 4 against Toronto at Progressive Field. Eric Stamets is expected to open the season at shortstop. He played a lot of short this spring, missing time late in camp with tight left hip flexor. Stamets has a good reputation for his defense and has spent the last three years bouncing between Class AA Akron and Columbus. He is in line to make his big-league debut on Thursday.

Phone call away: Usually Stamets would be the guy who was a phone call away. If the Tribe needs offense, it could call Chang. If it needs defense, Clement could be an answer.

Fire down below: Besides Brayan Rocchio, here are some other young middle infielders to follow. Tyler Freeman won the New York-Penn League batting title last year for Class A Mahoning Valley when he was 18. Jose Tena, who hit .313 (61-for-198) in the Dominican Summer League last year, can play short and third. Aaron Bracho, who missed time last year with a broken right elbow, is expected to play in the Arizona Rookie League this season.

Catcher Roberto Perez (left) talks to right-hander Mike Clevinger during a game against the Tigers in September. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer)

CATCHERS

Roberto Perez and Kevin Plawecki will handle the catching. Perez is getting a chance to start for the first time in his career following the trade of Yan Gomes to Washington. The Indians acquired Plawecki on Jan. 6 in a deal with the Mets. Perez handles the pitching staff well and has a decent arm when it comes to controlling the running game. The question is will he hit? He batted .168 (30-for-179) with two homers and 19 RBI last season. He left Arizona hitting .275 (11-for-40) with two homers and six RBI.

Phone call away: Eric Haase will be at Columbus. He had a great spring, hitting .364 (8-for-22) with two doubles, two homers and 10 RBI. Tim Federowicz, who has caught with the Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Astros and Reds, will be at Columbus as well. Li-Jen Chu could help from Akron.

Fire down below: Noah “Bo” Naylor, the Tribe’s No. 1 pick last year, still has a lot of ground to cover. But he impressed the Indians in the Arizona Rookie League last season.

Hanley Ramirez. (Ross D. Franklin, Associated Press)

DESIGNATED HITTER

Hanley Ramirez, 35, made the roster even though he didn’t sign until Feb. 28. Ramirez’s bat showed some life at the end of spring training, but with the losses the offense suffered during the winter and the injuries to Lindor, Kipnis and Jose Ramirez, they at least needed a presence in the middle of the lineup.

Phone call away: The Indians aren’t in the business of developing designated hitters. They want players who can do more than one thing to give the big-league coaching staff options when they’re putting together a roster. Still, if the Tribe does need a bat, Bradley, Rodriguez or ever Haase could fill the bill.

Leonys Martin. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer)

CENTER FIELD

Leonys Martin has had a good spring on both sides of the ball. More importantly he’s fully recovered from the serious bacterial infection that put him in Cleveland Clinic in August. Martin, a left-handed hitter, could hit leadoff at the start of the season with Lindor on the injured list. Switch-hitting Greg Allen is expected to see time in center field. Allen, who can play all three outfield positions, has had a good spring.

Phone call away: Oscar Mercado had such a strong showing in his first big-league camp with the Indians that they thought hard about opening the season with him. But they wanted him to play every day at Columbus. Mercado has speed defensively and on the bases. This winter he improved at the plate by working at the Tribe’s swing camp at Progressive Field. He is on the fast track.Trayce Thompson can play center as well.

Fire down below: If the Indians don’t have Mercado’s number, they can always call Daniel Johnson. Johnson, one of three players acquired from Washington for Gomes, could play center or right field in Akron. Johnson, like Mercado, showed off a variety of tools this spring.

Jake Bauers. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer)

LEFT FIELD

Bauers, a left-handed hitter, is expected to see most of the playing time in left field. That is especially true if Hanley Ramirez establishes himself at DH. Bauers could platoon with Jordon Luplow, a right-handed hitter. Luplow has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Pirates. Last year at Class AAA Indianapolis he hit .287 (90-for-314) with eight homers and 49 RBI. He started slowly this spring, but came on in the last couple of weeks with the bat. Allen could see time in left as well.

Phone call away: Brandon Barnes and Thompson have big-league experience and can play all three outfield positions. Connor Marabell is another possibility.

Fire down below: Mitch Longo, who played at Mayfield High School, is coming off a good year at Class A Lynchburg.

Tyler Naquin. (Chuck Crow, The Plain Dealer)

RIGHT FIELD

This is going to be an interesting position. Tyler Naquin is expected to start there, but the Indians have veteran Carlos Gonzalez warming in the bullpen. Gonzalez signed a minor league deal on March 19. He has an April 20 opt-out in the contract, so the Indians have to let him know by then if he’s coming to the big league. Gonzalez has spent the last 10 years with the Rockies, the last three as their starting right fielder. Naquin has one minor league option left.Naquin and Gonzalez are left-handed hitters. Luplow and Allen could platoon with them on occasion.

Phone call away: Right now Gonzalez would probably be the first player to arrive from the minors. Thompson and Barnes can play right field as well.

Fire down below: George Valera, a center fielder by trade, can play the corners as well. Valera, 18, missed much of last season with a broken hamate bone. He’s been slowed by a hamstring injury this spring. The Indians feel he has the tools to hit for power and average.

Minnesota Twins (3/28 - 3/31)

Minneapolis, Minnesota - The Indians open the season with a 3-game series on the road against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field beginning on March 28th. This is the first series for both teams in 2019, and these are the two teams expected to battle it out for the American League Central crown, with most picking the Indians to take the division again this season. The Twins have remade their roster by adding some big bats like Marwin Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and C.J. Cron, while the Indians have let some of their big names like Michael Brantley, Andrew Miller and Cody Allen leave via free agency and traded away others, leading the fan base to be very upset with ownership and the front office.

Here are the projected pitching matchups, our pitchers listed first and their 2018 stats in parentheses:

RHP Corey Kluber (20-7, 2.89 ERA) versus RHP Michael Pineda (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
RHP Trevor Bauer (12-6, 2.21 ERA) versus RHP Jose Berrios (12-11, 3.84 ERA)
RHP Carlos Carrasco (17-10, 3.38 ERA) versus RHP Jake Odorizzi (7-10, 4.49 ERA)

Injury Report

Cleveland Indians: SS - Francisco Lindor (Calf), 2B - Jason Kipnis (Calf) & OF - Bradley Zimmer (Shoulder) are on the 10-Day IL. RHP - Danny Salazar (Shoulder) is on 60-Day IL

Minnesota Twins: 3B - Miguel Sano (Right Heel) & RHP Addison Reed (Left Thumb) are on the 10-Day IL

Transactions

The Indians have signed veteran OF Cameron Maybin to a minor league contract and have assigned him to Triple-A Columbus. The 31 year old Maybin spent last season with the Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners, where he hit a combined .249 with 4 homers and 28 RBIs in 129 games. He signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants, but was released at the end of Spring Training. He will serve as some outfield depth in the minors, but look for Carlos Gonzalez to be the first man up once he is ready in mid-April.

This Indians also made two minor league deals leading up to the opening series. First, they sent minor leaguers RHP Jhon Vergara, RHP Manuel Alvarez, LHP Daritzon Feliz and OF Jordan Smith to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for OF Austin Hayes and RHP Hunter Harvey. The Indians have been looking for upper level outfielders and Hayes fits what they are looking for. The 23 year old was selected in the 3rd round of the 2016 draft and hit a combined .235 with 12 homers and 46 RBI in 75 games between Short-A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie last year. His path to the majors was unclear as he was blocked and the O's had been looking to move him all Spring. He will likely open the season at Double-A Akron. Also coming to Cleveland is 24 yr old RHP Hunter Harvey, who spent 2018 at Double-A Bowie, made 9 starts going 1-2 with a 5.57 ERA, allowing 36 hits in 32 1/3 innings. The former 1st round pick in the 2013 draft has battled injuries since 2015, only making 20 appearances over that span. The Indians plan to take it slow with him and see him as a possible back of the rotation guy, he will open the season at Double-A Akron. Of the four players going to Baltimore, the one with the most upside is 18 yr old RHP Jhon Vergara. The Indians signed him as an international amateur free agent in 2017 and he impressed at the Indians Dominican Rookie team, going 3-5 with a 4.09 ERA in 12 games (11 starts), allowing 56 hits in 55 innings, walking 17 and striking out 26. He really started to put things together as the season went on and could be a fast riser in the O's system.

In a second trade, the Indians acquired 24 year old RHP Chance Adams and 29 year old OF Billy Burns from the New York Yankees in exchange for 24 year old OF Ka'ai Tom and 28 year old LHP R.C. Orlan. Adams made his major league debut last season, going 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in 3 appearances (1 start) for the Yankees. He tossed 7 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits while walking 4 and striking out 4. He was very strong at Triple-A Scranton, going 4-5 with a 4.78 ERA in 27 games (23 starts), striking out 113 and walking 58 in 113 innings pitched. He will open the season at Triple-A Columbus and will provide depth in both the rotation and bullpen this season. The switch hitting Billy Burns spent all of 2018 at Triple-A Omaha, but he has appeared in 242 games in the majors with Oakland and Kansas City. He has a career .270 batting average, with 5 homers and 55 RBIs and has stolen 46 bases. The Indians like his ability to play all three outfield spots and will also provide depth in the outfield.

Twins Trip Indians in Extras

The Minnesota Twins satisfied the home crowd at Target Field, treating them to a season-opening win, 3-2, over the Cleveland Indians. Starting Pitcher Michael Pineda was named player of the game for Minnesota. Minnesota reliever Trevor May picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Oliver Perez absorbed the loss.

Marwin Gonzalez provided some late-game drama. In the bottom of the 11th, with one out and a runner on 1st, Gonzalez hit a run-scoring triple. It helped Minnesota take the lead and grab the win. "It's a thrill to get that kind of win," Gonzalez said.

Chicago White Sox (4/1 - 4/3)

Cleveland, Ohio - The Indians return home for their first game at Progressive Field after taking two of three from the Twins in Minnesota to face another American League Central division foe, the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox were outscored 28 to 13 by the Kansas City Royals in their first series and come in to Cleveland in search for their first win of the young season. Their offense is led by OF Nicky Delmonico, who went 5 for 10 with 2 homers and 4 RBIs in the series with the Royals, but their pitching has been suspect so far, so the Indians will need to be patient and strike early and often.

Here are the projected pitching matchups, our pitchers listed first and their 2018 stats are marked with an '*'

RHP Mike Clevinger (*13-8, 3.02 ERA) versus RHP Ervin Santana (*0-1, 8.03 ERA)

Walkoff Win Takes Cleveland Streak to 7

The Cleveland Indians did just enough to sneak past the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-7, at Progressive Field. Cleveland left fielder Jordan Luplow earned player of the game honors. Cleveland, at 7-1, has sizzled in the early going. The game was decided with no one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Cleveland trailing 7-6, Roberto Perez hit a sinker from John Axford to right-center for a 2-run double. Just like that, the Indians had a walk-off win. "One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Perez told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Transactions

The Indians have purchased the contracts of OF Carlos Gonzalez and IF Mike Freeman from Triple-A Columbus. The 33 year old Gonzalez signed a minor league contract with the Indians at on March 19th and was expected to remain in Goodyear when the season started to finish getting ready for the season. He appeared in 2 games for the Clippers, going hitless in 7 at bats, but knocked in a run and walked once. He is expected to get the bulk of the playing time in right field. The 31 year old Freeman signed as a minor league free agent on November 20th and was hitting .286 with 2 RBI in 6 games at Columbus. He has not had much success at the major league level in his career, hitting just .134 with 1 homer and 2 RBIs in 57 career games (91 plate appearances) with the Diamondbacks, Mariners, Cubs and Dodgers. He spent 2018 with the Cubs Triple-A team, where he hit .274 with 6 homers and 38 RBIs in 78 games. He is expected to split time with Max Moroff at SS while Francisco Lindor still recovers from his calf and ankle injuries.

To make room for Gonzalez and Freeman, the Indians have optioned SS Eric Stamets and OF Greg Allen to Triple-A Columbus. Stamets won the starting shortstop job with Lindor out, but really struggled at the plate, going 2 for 25 (.080) with a home run and four RBIs in 8 games (7 starts). He walked once and struck out 11 times and committed 1 error in 23 chances. "Eric's glove has never been an issue, he is very gifted in the field" said Indians Manager Terry Francona. "We just need to find some more offense out of that position and we want to see what Mike can do up here and give Eric a chance to play every day down at Columbus, I told him not to get down on himself, because we know we will need him later on in the season". Greg Allen showed that he belongs in the majors during the end of last season and was hitting well this year so far (.455 with 3 RBI in 11 at bats). The team said they really want him to also go down and play every day.

Indians Win at Detroit, 7-3

The Cleveland Indians knocked off the Detroit Tigers, 7-3, at Comerica Park for their 11th straight win. Tyler Naquin, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Cleveland won. The right fielder was 4-5 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The Tigers, now 4-8, continue their poor start. Naquin had a big at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, when he hit a 2-run single. The Indians went on to win. "I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Naquin. "And not try to do too much."
