Hartley in Jack Scroggins 19th Century Pugilist reprints several rare documents. Among these is an appendix entitled "Scale of relative Merit". Here 80 pugilists are ranked on the basis of five factors. They are rated on a scale of 0 to 10 on each of these factors and these points are totaled. The "perfect" pugilist would be rated at 50.

The five factors that are rated are: weight, strength, activity, skill, and bottom followed by the total. Fighters of different weights are compared to each other in this scale which includes the giant Bob Gregson and lightweight Barney Aaron. Two previous scales are mentioned: by Ned Topham and John Bee, but I've seen neither of these.

Jem Belcher, the man Pearce defeated for the title, was the highest rated pugilist with 47 points. Following him were Tom Johnson 46, John Gully and the ill-fated Jack Shaw with 44 each, then came Pearce and Jack Power with 43 each. This is what the ratings looked like in a nutshell.
Hen Pearce is viewed within the top 6 of 80 men.

Gilbert Odd in his Encyclopedia of Boxing has short bios of 40 pugilists.
Bob Mee's Bare Fists is a recent publication that gives a good single volume coverage of the Prize Ring Era. Tony Gee's Up to Scratch gives single volume coverage, but is focused on a single locale near London. Trevor Wignall's 1928 Prides of the Fancy looks at all time greats by weight class and includes prize ring pugilists. Pearce Eagan's Boxiana and Miles Pugilistica are three volume primary resources and worth looking at if you can find them. They illustrate the flavor of the period with descriptions of fights. In their discussion of boxers Miles is often at odds with Eagan's accounts and descriptions. Hennings 2 volume Fighting for the Championship is another older primary resource. Of these three Boxiana have been recently reprinted by Nicoll Island Publishing in Canada. Don Cogswell of IBRO reviewed them for, if memory serves, the Trunzo's Electronic Boxing Weekly. Mee's book also was well reviewed by Choice, a source of current reviews for academic libraries.

Strange as this may seem, Dowling's Fistiana 1868 lists two fighters with the name Plantagenet Green. One identified as Black, the other as from London.

One of four boxing brothers. Grew up in Shoreditch, London. Home base was The Blue Anchor presided over by Bill Richardson and later by Tom Symonds. Well schooled there. From endurance fights he learned that economy of movement saved energy. Tried to position himslf at ring center and let his opponent do the running. Cool, patient and methodical. Accurate hitter. Exponent of the straight left. Prefered to exhibit sporstsmanship and not use killer instinct when he hurt a man. Often gave weight.
Best at 8 stone 8 lbs

Baxter was a bw Bow Cup title holder. He faced Fred Johnson, created by DJDay for his Dixon replay, at least nine times. They were fairly matched in skill, but Baxter, given his fighting philosophy, didn't fare well in their short encounters. In bouts of longer duration he did much better.
