United States - Middleweights - Fight-Ins - Part 1

We have 294 Middleweights vying for the World Tournament berth for the United States. There will be 38 fight-in bouts to set the field at 256 pugilists.

Fight-Ins - Part 1:

Joshua Smith vs Frankie Augustain - Smith crowded Augustain throughout, working the body well to take the legs out from under him. He then scored 2 knockdowns in the 8th round then piled it on until the referee stepped in to protect the defenseless Augustain for the TKO.

Reuben Shank vs Anthony Bartinelli - A good close action bout that seldom strayed from center ring saw Shank land a bit more, but Bartinelli kept it close enough that several rounds were pickems. It was no suprise when the judges scored it 7-7, 7-6 Bartinelli and 8-5 for Shank for the draw. The rematch will be at the end of this post.

Joe Rindone vs Charles Cooley - Rindone's aggression was a bit more effective than Cooley's boxing, but Cooley's jab opened a gash on the left eyebrow of Rindone in the 5th round that continued to reopen and widen until the referee halted the bout with 2:25 left in the 15th round for the upset TKO on cuts by Cooley. While I had Rindone up 8-6 through 14, the judges had it 8-6, 9-5 and 7-6 for Cooley.

Willie Lee Monroe vs Brent Cooper - An interesting bout that saw Monroe repeatedly land low blows while outlanding Cooper nearly 2-1. Cooper scored a knockdown in the 4th round while Monroe scored one in the 15th round. It went to the judges with the scores being 9-5 Cooper, 7-7 even and 8-7 for the winner by majority decision Cooper.

Ralph Moncrief vs Tony Danza - Danza was building up a lead, landing the more telling blows when he walked into a Moncrief uppercut that sent him sprawling to the canvas for the 10 count. Danza then retired to a life as an actor.....

Pete Mead vs Bob Douglass - Douglass boxed and countered well, scoring a knockdown in the 5th round while building up a lead. Mead was undaunted however, keeping the pressure on until he landed a wild left hand that dropped Douglass for the count in the 7th round.

Walcott Langford vs Bill Gabig - A good clean fight that saw Langford be a bit faster and a bit more accurate as he took the 9-5, 10-5 and 10-5 decision over Gabig.

Jimmy Herring vs Reddy Gallagher - Herring's agressiveness and accuracy saw him outland Gallagher 500 to 240 while also landing the harder shots. Gallagher's right eye was bloodied and near closed by the time the bell rang ending the 15th round. The judges scored it 11-4, 10-5 and 13-2 for Herring.

Rematch:

Reubin Shank vs Anthony Bartinelli - Another decent action bout that saw both men toe to toe throughout. Bartinelli scored the lone knockdown in the 8th round and closed strong as it went to the judges again. This time they saw it 7-6, 8-6 and 7-6 for the winner by unanimous decision, and the upset, Bartinelli.

Hi Infinity hows it going? I know this universe has been a long term project which has taken up many hours of your time and therefore requires a rest due to the mental fatigue it can give when doing a uni like this along with the time consuming issue its self, but I just wanted to let you know that this is one of the best Title Bout Uni's I have seen and that I can't wait for you to come back and continue this tournament.

Fear not my friends, I have every intention of continuing this tourney, it's just that I did need a break from it for a while. Look for things to start up again soon.

United States - Middleweights - Fight-Ins - Part 2

Fight-Ins - Part 2:

Ronald Hearns vs Joe Godfrey - Godfrey went down half way through the 1st, and was taking a pounding in the 2nd when his corner threw in the towel to hand Hearns the TKO

Efrain Garcia vs Joe Grim - Garcia was the epitome of efficiency, landing 57.2% of his shots while only allowing Grim a paltry 19%. It was a cut over the left eye of Grim that ended the fight in the 5th for the TKO that made the difference however.

Jimmy Flood vs Walcott Jackson - Despite 3 knockdowns by Flood, I had it dead even through 12 with Flood finally getting the better of it in the final 3 rounds. The judges had it 8-7 Flood, 7-7 even and 8-6 Flood for the Majority Decision.

Joe Curcio vs Charley Kammer - Curcio landed a big right hand for a knockdown in the 4th round, then carried the fight the rest of the way to win the decision over Kammer 9-6, 12-3 and 10-4.

Cleveland Corder vs Willie Kemp - Slick movement and accurate punching were the order of the day as Corder took the impressive 10-3, 9-5 and 9-5 decision that most observers felt wasn't even that close.

Nate Collins vs Rudy Lovato - A good action bout saw Lovato survive a pair of 1st round knockdowns and another in the 12th to go the distance. I had it 8-6 Collins, and the judges scored it 9-5, 8-6 and 8-6 for Collins as Lovato made it close with his never say die attitude.

Freddie Cabral vs W. C. McClellan - A lopsided bout saw McClellan down twice early and 2 times in the 15th before the referee halted the bout for the Cabral TKO with 1:09 left in the bout.

Anthony Bonsante vs Dick Moore - Bonsante was dominant from the opening bell, finally scoring a knockdown in the 6th then pounding the then hapless Moore until the referee stepped in for the TKO.

Tony Almeida vs Arley Seifer - Almeida was the favorite, and fought a heck of a fight, but Seifer refused to go away, and took it the distance despite a nasty cut over his right eye. I had it 9-6 Seifer for the upset, and the judges agreed, 8-7, 8-7 and 9-6 as Seifer moves forward against the shocked Almeida.

Jackie Aldare vs Jerry Slattery - This was a dull affair up to the 13th when Aldare decided he'd had enough and floored Slattery 2 times before earning the TKO with 1:17 left in the round.

United States - Middleweights - Fight-Ins - Part 3

Fight-Ins - Part 3:

Otis Woodward vs Cassill Tate - Woodward was putting on a boxing clinic, nearly having Tate out in the 5th round. That seemed to wake Tate up and he came out and battered Woodward all over the ring for the next 2 minutes and 32 seconds before the referee stepped in to save Woodward from serious damage.

Andy Walsh vs Arthur Upham - Upham slowed things down, taking the first 5 rounds in uneventful fashion only to have Walsh come storming back taking 5 of the next 6 rounds before scoring the suprising KO late in the 12th round.

Heath Todd vs Chet Vinci - A beautiful action packed brawl saw these two men batter one another throughout, with Todd having the edge in most of the rounds. Both men bloodied, and the fight being stopped several times to check on their cuts, it was finally ended when Todd tore open the gaping gash on the bridge of Vinci's nose in the 9th round for the TKO. Todd scored the lone knockdown in the 6th round that Vinci was clearly winning.

Frankie Skidmore vs Chris Walsh - Walsh started fast in the 1st round only to have his right eyelid torn wide open half way through the 2nd round for the Skidmore TKO.

Keith Sims vs Alonzo Williams - This wasn't a case of Sims being that good, but Williams being that bad as Sims takes the decision 12-2, 11-3 and 11-3 in an uninpiring bout.

Jonathon Reid vs Billy Woods - This was an odd bout, with several less than scintillating rounds when a fight broke out in the 7th with Reid moving and countering very well, building up a big lead then going down to a Woods overhand right that had him down for 9. Reid survived the round and a gash under his left eye to bust open a cut on the lip of Woods and reopen a gash on the right eyebrow that ended it in the 9th for the come from behind TKO by Reid.

Mike Pusateri vs Dick Young - These two put on a show, with Pusateri scoring 6 knockdowns, with Young picking himself up and continuing to take it to Pusateri thorughout. The final 3 knockdowns came in the 10th round and Young was unable to withstand anymore punishement, suffering the KO at the end of the round. Both men were loudly applauded for their efforts. Facinating punchstats in this one, Young landed 55.9% of his shots while Pusateri only landed 13.3% of his shots in this one.

Lee Owens vs Gaylord Barnes - A back and forth tactical bout saw Barnes fight very well at times while Owens didn't seem to want to fight, but did enough to make things very difficult to score. Owens scored a knockdown in the 15th round that seemed to seal the deal, but the judges had mixed opinions, scoring it 9-6 Barnes, 8-6 Owens and 7-7 even for the Draw. Rematch at the end of the post.

Jerry Holly vs Sal Belloise - Belloise moved very well, then landed a counter right hook that floored Holly in the 4th. Holly got up, but it was all Belloise from there as he battered Holly for the next 2 rounds until the referee had seen enough to end things for the upset TKO in the 6th round.

Marlon Hayes vs George Carter - Carter was brilliant at times, but the ferocity of Hayes kept him slightly ahead throughout. Finally he landed a huge uppercut midway through the 15th and final round that laid Carter out like a Christmas Goose for the KO.

Rematch:

Lee Owens vs Gaylord Barnes - This one saw Barnes take control in the latter rounds of what had been a close tactical bout. Neither man was marked or down in this one, but Barnes was the faster and smarter of the two, scoring the 9-6 decision on all 3 cards. to secure the upset win.

United States - Middleweights - Fight-Ins - Part 4

Fight-Ins - Part 4:

Bernard Gray vs Tony DiPelino - A dominant performance by Gray as DiPelino was unable to handle the speed of Gray. Gray earned the 8-6, 10-3 & 11-3 decision.

Andre Cooper vs Chuck Foster - These two went at one another with an unbridled ferocity for 5 rounds before Foster opened a gash on the left eyebrow of Cooper for the TKO half way through the 5th.

Ernie Burford vs Alec Gregganis - Burford scored knockdowns in the 6th and 9th rounds only to have Gregganis pick himself up and batter Burford all over the ring in the 10th round for the upset TKO.

Shakir Ashanti vs Jimmy Handler - Handler moved well through out, scoring a counter knockdown and controling the pace of the fight to earn the 9-5, 9-5 and 8-6 decision.

Jesse Aquino vs Billy Hanrahan - Hanrahan controled the pace, scoring easily and often throughout, putting Aquino on his back in the 7th round. Aquino staged an improbable comeback however, scoring 3 knockdowns in the 10th, including the KO shot to earn the comeback victory.

Larry Anzalone vs John LoCicero - Anzalone controled the pace, though LoCicero came on strong in the end to make it an entertaining fight for the most part. In the end it was Anzalone's speed and movement that took it over the power of LoCicero as the judges scored it 10-4, 9-6 and 9-6 for Anzalone.

Joey Albina vs Ron Martinez - Martinez took control early, then slacked off in the middle rounds before coming back strong in the latter rounds to win the 10-5, 9-6 and 11-4 decicision over the favored Albina.

Joe Louis Adair vs Dick O'Brien - An interesting fight that was close throughout, with Adair winning the rounds he scored knockdowns in. Adair finally closed it out with his 4th knockdown in the 10th round to move forward.

Woody Winslow vs Frank Taylor - Winslow battered Taylor for 10 rounds, scoring a pair of knockdowns and nearly closing both eyes when Taylor landed a wild right hand that dropped Taylor for the count in the 11th for the improbable come from behind KO.

Erwin Williams vs Ike White - A back and forth bout that saw both men tear into one another, White with little skill but ferocity, while Williams countered well. Williams tore open a gash on the forehead of White early on, and reopened it several times, the final time in the 12th round for the TKO on cuts.

Thus ends the Fight-In portion of this tourney, setting the field at 256 fighters, all eager to earn the United States berth in the World Tournament.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 1

Round 1 - Part 1:

Marvin Hagler vs Anthony Bartinelli - Hagler wasted little time, landing bomb after bomb though miraculously Bartinelli remained on his feet until the referee stepped in to protect him from further harm with 11 seconds left in round 1. Hagler outlanded Bartinelli 60-0 in the round as he was a buzzsaw!

Harry Greb vs Charles Cooley - Greb lived up to his nickname of "The Human Windmill" in this one, punishing Cooley from the opening bell, scoring the TKO with 1:09 left in round 1. Greb landed 54 of 83 punches for a remarkable 65.1% while Cooley never got off a punch.

Mickey Walker vs Brent Cooper - Walker was content to bide his time, winning all but the 1st round when lightning struck 2 times in the 6th round, the 2nd knockdown being for the count against an over matched Cooper.

Stanley Ketchel vs Arley Seifer - Ketchel took every round despite obviously loading up for one big punch. He scored knockdowns in the 8th, 9th then the KO shot in the 10th round against a game Seifer.

Bernard Hopkins vs Cassill Tate - Hopkins started out landing with bad intentions, scoring at will in the 1st and 2nd rounds before the referee came to the conclusion that Tate was too hurt to continue late in the 2nd round for the TKO.

Charley Burley vs Gaylord Barnes - Burley took all 8 rounds including a knockdown against a suprisingly tough Barnes when in the 9th he reopened a gash on the right eyelid of Barnes that ended the fight for the TKO. Barnes face was a swollen bleeding mass from the punishment Burley dished out throughout the bout.

Jake LaMotta vs Sal Belloise - Belloise gave LaMotta fits at times, nearly closing his right eye with a strong jab. LaMotta was unphased however, and kept moving forward, opening cuts both above and below the right eye of Belloise before scoring the KO shot in the 10th round.

Mike Gibbons vs Chuck Foster - Gibbons danced, pranced and otherwise made Foster look foolish, landing 638 shots while only allowing 94 from Foster. He scored the lone knockdown in the 15th round but was unable to finish the job, sending it to the judges for the 15-0 shutout on all 3 cards.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 2

Round 1 - Part 2:

Tony Zale vs Alec Gregganis - Zale smothered Gregganis for 5 rounds without a knockdown, but did so much damage that the referee stepped in with 1:27 left in the 5th for the TKO.

Teddy Yarosz vs Jimmy Handler - Yarosz was content to potshot with his jab for most of the fight, using clever movement to make Handler miss badly throughout to earn the 13-1, 12-2 and 13-1 decision.

Holman Williams vs Ron Martinez - Williams was in charge from the opening bell, sticking and moving, keeping Martinez off balance and landing combinations from all angles. He scored a knockdown in the 14th enroute to the 13-2, 13-2 and 12-3 decision.

Freddie Steele vs Erwin Williams - Steele had little trouble with Williams, scoring 4 knockdowns enroute to the 13-2, 12-3 and 12-2 decision.

Harry Smith vs Woody Winslow - Smith battered Winslow throughout, scoring 3 knockdowns including a picture perfect hook in the 9th round that put Winslow down for the count.

Kelly Pavlik vs Joe Louis Adair - Pavlik out landed Adair by nearly 4-1 while scoring a knockdown in the 5th. He then continued punishing Adair into the 7th before the referee halted things for the Pavlik TKO.

Ken Overlin vs Larry Anzalone - Overlin stuck and moved through out, clowning around at times against a game but out gunned Anzalone enroute to the 11-3, 10-4 and 11-2 decision.

Mike O'Dowd vs Jesse Aquino - The 16th seeded O'Dowd was in complete control when he landed an obviously intentional low blow in the 7th round to be disqualified, sending a jubulant Aquino on to the 2nd round in the first major upset of this tournament.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 3

Round 1 - Part 3:

Young Mitchell vs Bernard Gray - Mitchell punished Gray throughout, scoring a pair of knockdowns and tearing a nasty gash over the right eye. In the 10th he put on a clinic on how to punish an opponent, when finally with 57 seconds left in the round his corner threw in the towel to end the fight and hand Mitchell a much deserved TKO win.

Lloyd Marshall vs Marlon Hayes - Hayes tried to hang in with the tough Marshall, actually scoring well at times, but Marshall's power won out, scoring a knockdown in the 6th then a pair in the 8th before the referee had seen enough for the Marshall TKO win.

Eddie Booker vs Mike Pusateri - Pusateri's vaunted right hand was never a factor in this one as the clever Booker boxed circles around him for 15 rounds enroute to a solid 12-3, 11-3 & 13-2 decision.

Jeff Smith vs Jonathon Reid - The light hitting Smith put on a boxing clinic against a befuddled Reid. He moved well, scoring at will throughout, to earn the lopsided 12-0, 14-0 and 12-2 decision.

Billy Papke vs Keith Sims - Papke scored knockdowns in the 4th and 5th rounds then pummeled Sims throughout the 6th round, giving him a terrible beating before the referee stepped in for the TKO.

Michael Nunn vs Frankie Skidmore - Nunn lost 2 points to 3 low blows, but finally hurt Skidmore badly in the 9th, pummeling him with shots from all angles until the referee halted the bout for the TKO.

Gene Fullmer vs Heath Todd - Fullmer had 2 rounds taken from him for his 6 fouls as he used every tactic in the book to wear down the determined Todd. Knockdowns in the 5th then the KO shot in the 7th by Fullmer were the result. If Fullmer continues fighting this dirty, chances are he won't make it far into the tourney.

Hank Casey vs Andy Walsh - A suprisingly close decision despite Casey showing superior boxing skills saw the judges score it 9-5, 8-6 and 11-3.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 4

Round 1 - Part 4:

Joey Archer vs Jackie Aldare - Archer was masterful in his ring generalship, landing punches from all angles to seemingly score at will to earn the 13-2, 12-3, 11-4 decision.

Freddie Apostoli vs Anthony Bonsanti - Apostoli was in control early, though Bonsanti did well at times, tearing a gash under the left eye of Apostoli. The gash became so bad that Apostoli was sent out to try to end things, and he landed bomb after bomb for the TKO at the 2:37 mark of the round.

Ellsworth Webb vs Freddie Cabral - Cabral showed a lot of moxy, getting up from 3 knockdowns and continuing to take it to Webb, but it was Webbs mixture of speed and power that took the day as he earned the 10-5, 11-3 and 10-3 decision.

Billy Soose vs Nate Collins - Soose battered Collins the entire fight, scoring 8 knockdowns including a pair in the 11th round before the referee mercifully ended the fight for the Soose TKO.

Dave Shade vs Cleveland Corder - Shade was in control throughout, though Corder was brave, firing back well at times. Shade scored the lone knockdown in the 10th round then continued on through the full 15 to win the decision rather handily, 10-4, 11-2 and 12-3.

Holly Mims vs Joe Curcio - Mims lost a point in the 3rd round on his first foul, a low blow and that cost him the win as Curcio fought better than expected while Mims didn't live up to expectations. It went the distance with the judges scoring it 8-5 Mims, 6-6 even and 7-6 for Curcio for the draw. Rematch to follow.

Eddie McGoorty vs Jimmy Flood - Both men stayed at ring center, though there wasn't a lot of action at times. McGoorty's superior hand speed inside and instincual defense made Flood look foolish at times as he took the 12-2, 11-4 and 10-3 decision.

Charles McCoy vs Efrain Garcia - After trading the first 4 hotly contested rounds, McCoy took over in the 5th before scoring the KO on a wicked uppercut right to the temple of Garcia with 15 seconds left in the 6th round.

Rematch:

Holly Mims vs Joe Curcio - Mims did everything he could to keep Curcio at bay in this one, which made a dull fight. But dull suited Mims as Curcio wasn't able to work as effectively inside after the first 2 rounds as he did in the first bout. Mims took the 8-3, 9-5 and 11-3 decision.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 5

Round 1 - Part 5:

Gerald McClellan vs Ronald Hearns - Hearns fought well in the early going, though McClellan took 2 of the first 3 rounds. In the 3rd Hearns opened a nasty gash that McClellan's corner couldn't close, so they sent McClellan out to try and finish Hearns off in the 4th. It paid off as McClellan caught Hearns with a wicked uppercut 2 minutes into the round and Hearns folded like a deck of cards, and was unable to answer the bell for the KO.

Happy Littleton vs Jimmy Herring - Littleton boxed well, though Herring had some sterling moments as he kept coming forward despite the punishment he recieved coming in. Littleton opened a gash on the right eyebrow of Herring in the 8th, that simply wouldn't stay closed, and in the 11th the ring doctor had seen enough to order the fight halted for the Littleton TKO.

Frank Klaus vs Walcott Langford - Klaus battered Langford for the first 8 rounds, scoring a knockdown in the 7th round, then let off, seemingly content to take the end rounds and take the decision. The judges scored it 12-2 Klaus, 7-7 Even (!!?!!) and 13-1 Klaus for the Majority decision.

Gorilla Jones vs Pete Mead - Jones doesn't have one punch power, but he and Mead stayed center ring, with Jones landing shot after shot so that in the 5th Mead was worn down already and went down to a wicked 4 punch combo. While he got up, he wasn't fit to continue and the referee stepped in to halt the bout for the TKO.

Ben Jeby vs Ralph Moncrief - These two were content to stay close throughout, banging away inside. Jeby had the faster hand speed, more accurate punching and superior inside defense. Moncrief's eye started ballooning at an alarming rate in the 11th, and it caused a 15th round knockdown as Jeby earned the 11-4, 11-3 and 11-4 decision. Jeby landed an impressive 57.9% of his shots while Moncrief only landed 22% of his.

Ace Hudkins vs Joshua Smith - Hudkins showcased his superior skills, taking round after round until he walked into a wicked right hook from Smith that laid him out for the count! With this major upset, Smith becomes the 2nd, and final member of the Fight-in winners to advance to the next round.

Henry Hank vs Willie Warren - Hank had little regard for the punches of Warren, wading in and scoring knockdowns in the 1st, 10th and 15th rounds enroute to a dominating 12-2, 12-3 and 13-2 decision.

Joey Giardello vs Bobby Warthem - Giardello used every dirty tactic in the book to keep Warthem off balance, with 6 fouls in the first 6 rounds, 7 overall. For some reason the referee continued to allow the fight to go on, and Giardello's boxing skills took the day against the over agressive Warthem, earning the 10-4, 10-4 and 9-4 decision.

Really enjoying the thread thus far, and I am glad to see Holley Mims moving on.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 6

Round 1 - Part 6:

Joey Giambra vs Sergeant Lou Woods - A good tactical bout saw things even on my card through 12, with Giambra taking the 13th and 14th before dropping the final round. The judges saw it the same as I did, 8-7 on all 3 cards for Giambra who narrowly averted the upset.

Tiger Flowers vs Eddie Andrews - With both men bleeding, Flowers was pulling ahead slowly but surely against the game Andrews when the gash on Andrews nose became so bad that the referee halted the bout in the 12th on the doctor's instruction for the TKO on cuts.

Lester Felton vs John Banks - Felton was too slick against the hard charging Banks, who at times looked like he seriously hurt Felton. Felton withstood the storm however to take the solid 11-2, 10-3 and 8-5 decision.

Vince Dundee vs Gilbert Baptist - Dundee built up a solid lead, but Baptist continued to move forward, scoring well at times in the middle rounds. A clash of heads opened a gash over the left eye of Baptist in the 10th, and reopened in the 12th to stop the fight and send it to the cards. Dundee took a well deserved 9-1, 7-3 and 7-3 decision in this shortened bout.

Bennie Briscoe vs Ed Binney - Briscoe scored 5 knockdowns in the first 9 rounds against the tough as nails Binney only to go down himself for a 9 count in the 10th! Briscoe was able to regain his senses between rounds and went on to score the KO on his 6th knockdown in the 14th round of this exciting slugger's matchup!

George Benton vs Bobby Boyd - Benton boxed very well, but was cut in the 10th round. It took 2 rounds for his corner to get it under control, but he continued to cruise along to earn the 11-3, 11-3 and 10-4 decision.

Georgie Abrams vs Jackie Clark - A rather dull fight between a pair of excellent defensive fighters saw Abrams take the 7-6, 9-3 and 8-5 decision.

Artie Towne vs Bert Colima - Colima fought well over his head, but Towne was a powerhouse, forcing Colima into the corner, and finally scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 10th round before the referee halted the bout for the TKO.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 7

Round 1 - Part 7:

Jermain Taylor vs Joey DeJohn - Taylor scored a knockdown in the 1st round then DeJohn stormed back, taking 2 out of the next 3 rounds before Taylor took control, handily winning the 5th then scoring another knockdown in the 6th. Taylor then poured it on until the referee halted the bout for the TKO.

Frank Tate vs Tony Dupas - After splitting four hard fought rounds Tate took over in the 5th then landed a hard combination that floored Dupas for the count with 1:10 left in the 6th round.

Dave Rosenberg vs Freddy Flores - A good tactical bout that I had even through 12. Rosenberg landed an uppercut flush to the jaw in the 13th round then took the final two rounds to close out his 9-6, 9-5 and 8-6 decision.

Paul Pender vs Stephon Frost - This started out as a terrific action bout with the slugger Frost forcing the action while the boxer Pender countered ferociously. Unfortunately Frost punched himself out by the 6th round and Pender turned it into a snooze fest by dancing and posturing the rest of the way to earn the 10-4, 10-4 and 9-5 decision. Pender landed a solid 56.3% of his shots when he bothered to throw them, while holding Frost to an anemic 7.8% connect rate, with most of his punches landing in the first 5 rounds.

Carl Olson vs Sammy Giuliani - Olson was hot and cold, scoring a knockdown in the 1st and another in the 6th. In the 8th he put it all together, landing seemingly at will against the suddenly hapless Giuliani until the referee halted the bout with 9 seconds left in the round.

Willie Monroe vs Otis Graham - Graham has some good moments, but they came few and far between as Monroe picked him apart, scoring a knockdown in the 4th then the KO shot as Graham was lunging in late in the 14th round.

Jack McVey vs Randy Griffin - A fast and furious bout that saw McVey crowding Griffin throughout, with Griffin countering effectively. It all came to a screeching halt however in the 9th round as McVey landed 2 thundering hooks that put Griffin down for a 9 count then the fatal 10 count for the win.

Jock Malone vs Jackie LaBua - LaBua was cut on the left eyebrow early and spent the rest of the fight defending it though he was expected to be the stalker. Malone punished the eye throughout, reopening it and controling the pace of the fight to win handily 12-1 on all 3 cards.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 8

Round 1 - Part 8:

Reggie Johnson vs Bucky Lawless - A suprisingly close action bout saw Lawless box well through most of the fight, with Johnson stalking relentlessly. The 10th round was a RoY candidate as Johnson finally landed some huge blows only to have Lawless fight his way back into the round off the ropes with furious combinations. In the 13th Johnson scored a knockdown, then in the 14th he landed a huge right hand that ended the dreams of the upset minded Lawless by way of KO. The score cards were 6-6, 7-6 Johnson and 7-5 Johnson through 13.

John David Jackson vs William Lee - Jackson boxed well, scoreing a pair of knockdowns that nearly had Lee undone in the 9th round. Lee picked himself up and had a monster 11th round, but Jackson was able to withstand the storm, then survive a knockdown at the end of the round where he was obviously out only to be saved by the bell! It went to the judges who scored it 9-5, 10-5 and 10-4 for the winner Jackson.

Al Hostak vs Vern Lester - Hostak tore open a nasty cut on the right eyelid of Lester early in the 1st round, then punished Lester who obviously was bothered by the claret streaming down his face. Lester's corner was able to close the cut between rounds, but Hostak reopened it again late in the 2nd round for the TKO on cuts.

Charley Fusari vs Pat Lowry - A back and forth bout with many close rounds that were hard to score saw Fusari take the 8-6, 9-5 and 10-5 decision.

Dwight Davison vs Billy McNeese - Davison scored a knockdown in the 1st and that only seemed to incense McNeese who fought furiously in rounds 2, 3 and 4 only to walk into a Davison uppercut in the 5th that put him out for the count.

Vinnie Curto vs Jack Moffat - Neither man looked like they'd boxed 15 rounds, but Curto was in control throughout, earning the 9-5, 11-3 and 11-3 decision.

Jack Chase vs Curtis Parker - Parker, the decided underdog, fought his heart out, taking it to Chase in every round, making for a close and exciting fight that I had dead even through 13 rounds. Chase finally caught Parker coming in late in the 14th with a picture perfect combination that flattened Parker for the count. The crowd gave both men wild applause during the announcement of the results.

Rocky Castellani vs Kevin Perry - After several uneventful rounds early, Castellani finally took control, sticking and moving throughout the bout, nearly closing the right eye of Perry. In the end the judges had it 12-2, 12-2 and 11-3 for Castellani.

United States - Middleweights - Round 1 - Part 9

Round 1 - Part 9:

Gene Armstrong vs Rudy Robles - Armstrong tried to make the fight a snooze fest, and it backfired as it allowed Robles to stay in the fight. When they did mix it up Robles seemed to land the more telling blows. I had it 7-6 Robles while the judges scored it 8-4 Armstrong, 7-6 Robles and 6-6 even for the draw. Rematch to follow.

Paddy Young vs Billy Stift - Stift boxed well early, but lost his legs around the 6th round as Young punished him to the body throughout. Young scored the lone knockdown in the 13th round and nearly closed the right eye of Stift, but to his credit Stift took the final 2 rounds to close out a valiant yet futile effort. Young took the decision 9-5, 10-4 and 11-4.

Ted Wright vs Willie Troy - A tough fight to score as Troy fought over his head at times. Wright had both eyes nearly closed at the end of 15. I had it dead even at 7-7 while the judges scored it 9-5, 7-7 and 8-5 for the favored Wright who was lucky to pull out the win.

Johnny Wilson vs Sammy Walker - A furious bout that saw both men cut in the 1st round, Wilson going down in the same frame. Wilson came back strong, but I had it dead even when in the 7th round the cut over Walker's eye reopened and the ring doctor ordered the fight halted for the TKO. All 3 cards were 3-3 through the 6th round.

Coley Welch vs Walter Woods - After 3 closely fought action packed rounds Welch reopened a gash on the right eyelid of Woods to end the fight in the 4th round for the TKO.

Bobby Watts vs Harry Yorgey - Watts used a wicked left jab to rake the face of Yorgey opening several cuts in just 3 rounds for the TKO on cuts.

Eernie Vigh vs Al Andrews - Vigh tried to steamroll Andrews, and was constantly punished coming in, as Andrews opened a cut in the 4th round and widened it in the 5th and 6th before the fight was halted in the 7th for the upset TKO by Andrews. Andrews had a solid lead on all 3 cards through the 6th round.

Charles Turner vs Doyle Baird - Turner's body attack was scathing, causing Baird to drop his gloves late in the 1st round. Turner then turned up the heat, scoring at will until the 10th when he scored a pair of knockdowns, followed by 3 in the 11th and 2 more including the KO shot in the fatal 12th round.

Rematch:

Gene Armstrong vs Rudy Robles - This time both men came out to mix it up, but Robles wasn't able to keep the pace, dropping his hands about midway through the fight in exhaustion. Armstrong forged ahead to take the 9-4, 14-0 (odd score in all reality) and 11-3 decision.
