Well the original plan was to start getting more involved with the NHL and its players after 5 full seasons, giving me a chance to build some history and build a team. It appears that the NHL writers association has suggested that the Canadiens could be a contender for the Cup in 1983-84 and if so, we should share the ride.

Lets start by talking about the Canadiens Roster:

G Stefan Mertel. The 30 year old from Humenne, SVK is the Canadiens back up goalie, used mostly when we play back to back nights. He is currently on the last year of his contract and will be a UFA at seasons end. He was an original member of the organization and has played in a total of 23 NHL games and 27 AHL games with the St John's Ice Caps. In 23 NHL games, he has a 5-12-2 record with a 2.78 GAA and .906 save %.

G Wilf Nestor. The 29 year old from Markham, ON is the Canadiens star starting goalie. He will become a UFA at the end of the 1987 season and is currently making $6.9 M per season. He was an All-Star in the 1981 season. In 3 seasons with Montreal, he has a 105-83-19 record with a 2.39 GAA. He also has a .916 career save % with 14 SO's. He won a career high 39 games in 1980-81.

LD Tyler Duclos. The 22 year old from Montreal, QC became a top 6 defenseman with the Canadiens last year. He will be an RFA at the end of this season. Considered a defensive defenseman, he has played in 95 games in the NHL with Montreal. In those games he has 9 goals and 21 assists for 30 points with 100 PIMs and a -4 rating. Duclos was the Canadiens 2nd round, 54th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

LD Dennis Engstrom. The 33 year old from Vasteras, SWE is another defensive defenseman for Montreal. He is signed until the end of this season and is making $6.1 M. He will become a UFA. In 246 games (has not missed a game in 3 years) with Montreal, he has 17 goals and 66 assists for 83 points with 130 PIMs and a +1 rating. He had a career high 8 goals in the 1981-82 season.

LD Lance Lambright. The 29 year old from Des Moines, IA has been a regular top 2 defenseman on the team. The first game of the season for both teams at we start the 1983-84 run for the Stanley Cup. Montreal fans are excited with the prospects of a Montreal run at the Stanley Cup as much of the media has speculated. Last year's version of the Canadiens had difficulty scoring, ranked 27th overall, but Montreal is hoping that many of the young forwards will take a step forward this season to give G Wilf Nestor some run support.

New York Rangers (0-0-1) at Montreal Canadiens (2-0-0)

Montreal will face the Rangers at the Bell Center tonight. Montreal have scored 7 goals in the first two games of the season, but have given up 6 already. Hopefully they can settle in as we move through out the season and win some games in regulation.

The Rangers will start G Brenden Hansen. The 21 year old is 0-0-1 with a 2.96 GAA and .893 save % in his only start this season. He was 11-8-4 last year with a 2.90 GAA and .910 save %. G Wilf Nestor will start for Montreal, he has 1 win with a 3.69 GAA and .886 save % in his only start this year.

Montreal poured it on in the 1st period including going on a 5 on 3 which they did not score on, but they broke the goose egg on their 16th shot of the period at 13:14 when RW Samuel Hebert gets his 1st of the year to make it 1-0. The final shots in period one were 17 to 3 for Montreal.

Montreal goes up 2-0 at 3:57 of the 2nd period when C Bryce Spencer gets his 2nd of the year. Montreal out shot the Rangers 16 to 11 in the 2nd period.

The Rangers carried the play throughout most of the 3rd period and were finally rewarded at 16:34 when LW Jason Baldwin scored his 1st of the year to make it 2-1 Montreal. Montreal did a good job in the last few minutes not allowing the Rangers to get out of their own end and held on for the win. St Louis Blues (2-0-0) at Montreal Canadiens (3-0-0)

The Canadiens will get a pretty good test as we face the St Louis Blues at the Bell Center. Montreal put a lot of shot on the board so far this season, averaging 36 per game, but I am sure they would like to see shots given up averaging 30 per game.

St Louis has been tight defensively, they have only given up 2 goals in 2 games holding the opposition to just 17 shots per game.

St Louis will start G Bennie Thornton, he has 2 wins and a 1.00 GAA with a .941 save % in 2 games. Thornton had 37 wins last year with a 2.13 GAA and a .911 save %. Montreal goes with G Wilf Nestor, he has 2 wins with a 2.40 GAA and a .924 save %.

It was a pretty even 1st period, but Montreal did break the ice with a goal at 16:10 of the period to make it 1-0. C Riley Callander got his 2nd of the year on the PP. The shots finished even at 10-10.

Montreal grabbed the momentum early in the 2nd and held it throughout most of the period, finally at 18:12 of the 2nd they were able to score to make it 2-0. RD Kevin Steinberg gets his 1st of the year. Montreal out shot St Louis 20 to 5 in the 2nd.

Like the 2nd period, Montreal carried the play in the 3rd. Despite that, St Louis got within 1 when RW Steve Tindle gets his 1st of the season at 13:24 on the PP to make it 2-1. The Blues did get G Bennie Thornton out for an extra attacker in the final 10 seconds but Montreal held on. Montreal out shot St Louis 10 to 7 in the 3rd making the totals 40 to 22 in favour of the Canadiens. St Louis was 1 for 4 on the PP while Montreal was 1 for 3.

Montreal's RD Kevin Steinberg was named the 1st star with his goal, 2 hits in 15:24 of ice time. The 26 year old now has 1 goal and 1 point in 2 games. Last year he had 1 goal and 5 points in 25 games.

Montreal Canadiens (4-0-0) at Buffalo Sabres (0-1-1)

The Canadiens look to continue to have a great start with a visit to the KeyBank Center to face the Sabres. Montreal won the first meeting 3-2. Montreal are certainly taking a lot of shots to start the season. We are averaging 37 a game. The goals against is 2.00 per game which currently ranks us middle of the pack at 14th, but its early.

Buffalo have only scored 3 goals in 2 games this season. So far in 2 games they have yet to score a PP goal.

Buffalo will start G Johnny Gore, he has yet to win a game this season. He has a 2.49 GAA and .921 save % in 2 games this season. Montreal is going with G Wilf Nestor. He has 3 wins with a 1.95 GAA and .932 save % in 3 games.

Well for a team that has difficulty scoring, it only took 15 seconds and 1 shot for Buffalo's RW Derrick Kinnevan to open the scoring with his 2nd of the year. Montreal got into penalty trouble mid way through the 1st, had to kill a 5 on 3. The final shots in the 1st were 11 to 8 in favour of the Sabres.

Buffalo goes up 2-0 at 7:47 of the 2nd when LW Aki-Petteri Makela gets his 1st of the season. Montreal makes it 2-1 and get within 1 at 17:11 when LW Josef Kramar gets his 3rd of the season. Montreal gets another before the end to the 2nd when RW Eric McFatridge gets his 2nd of the year at 18:05. Its now 2-2 after 2. The shots were 8 to 7 for Montreal in the period.

Montreal takes control of the momentum early in the 3rd, it took nearly 10 minutes for Buffalo to get their 1st shot. Despite the one sided period with Montreal out shooting Buffalo 17 to 5, it remains tied after regulation.

Overtime solves nothing, Buffalo out shot Montreal 4 to 2. But Montreal out shot Buffalo in the game 35 to 27. Riley Callander and Robert Hendriksson scored in the shoot out to give Montreal the win. Both teams were 0 for 3 on the PP.

Montreal's Josef Kramar was the 1st star with a goal and 3 shots in 17:01 minutes of ice time. The 21 year old Kramar now has 3 goals and 5 points in 5 games. He had 17 goals and 41 points last season in 80 games.

Montreal Canadiens (5-0-0) at Boston Bruins (4-0-0)

Well its going to be Montreal's closest rivals playing for 1st place at the TD Garden in September. Maybe not the build up of a 1st place game in April, but a great match up none the less.

Boston is scoring 3.00 goals per game despite getting only 28 shots per game. Their goaltending has been the difference as they have been giving up 38 shots per night, yet only 6 goals against in 4 games.

Boston will start G Tyrone Inskip, he has 2 win and a 2.00 GAA with .954 save %. Last year Inskip had 33 wins with a 2.44 GAA and .916 save %. Montreal is going with back up G Stefan Merkel. Merkel has 1 win with a 1.96 GAA and .913 save % in his only game this season.

The Canadiens are ranked 10th in the NHL as they take on average 32 shots per game. Defensively they are ranked 9th by allowing 28 shots per night.

The Senators are currently in 8th spot in the Eastern Conference, tied with 5 other teams so a loss could drop them into 13th. Ottawa takes a lot of shots on goal, they are averaging 35 per game or ranked 2nd in the NHL. They only allow 27 shots per game which ranks the 7th in the league.

Minnesota Wild (3-4-0) at Montreal Canadiens (10-0-0)

The Canadiens continue on a incredible start to the 1983-84 season coming out of the gate with 10 straight wins. Montreal continues to win despite a less then stellar PP. Montreal ranks 24th in the NHL with a 9.8% success rate. The Canadiens have been good on the PK though, we have killed 93.2% of our penalties for the 6th best rate in the NHL.

Today we highlight C Ben Archer, the 21 year old from Toronto, ON. He is still considered a prospect and is a offensive forward. The scouts say the strongest part of his game is his playmaking ability. So far this year he has played in all 10 games and has 3 assists for 3 points. He also has 4 PIMs and a +0 rating. So far in 104 career NHL games he has 14 goals and 24 assists for 38 points. He was a free agent signing by Montreal and is currently centering the 4th line.

Minnesota is currently in 10th place in the Western Conference with 6 points, this has them 3 points out of a playoff spot early in the season. The Wild are ranked 16th on the PP with a 14.3% success rate while their PK ranks 11th with a 88.0% kill rate.

The Wild will start G Karl Maurice tonight, he has 2 wins with a 2.51 GAA and .928 save % in 6 games this year. Last season he had 35 wins with a 2.90 GAA and a .907 save %. Montreal starts G Wilf Nestor, he has 8 wins with a 1.70 GAA and a .935 save % in 8 games.

Montreal Canadiens (11-0-0) at Detroit Red Wings (5-4-1)

Montreal travel to the Joe Louis Arena for the 2nd time this season looking for their 12th straight win. The last we faced the Wings we beat them 4-3 in the Joe. Montreal are scoring goals at a rate of 2.82 per game, which ranks them 13th in the league. Montreal allows 1.73 goals per game which ranks them 4th in the NHL.

Tonights highlighted player is RD Tomas Badura. The 21 year old is a defensive defenceman which is what the scouts agree is his strength. He played his junior hockey in Sudbury for the Wolves of the OHL, he had 11 goals and 38 points in 68 games there. He was signed as a free agent with Montreal and has split the last 2 seasons between AHL and NHL. He played 42 games with the IceCaps in the AHL and now 82 for Montreal in the NHL. He has 6 goals and 22 points in those games for Montreal. He currently plays on the 2nd defensive pairing.

Detroit ranks 1st in the NHL with 3.50 goals per game. The Red Wings give up 2.60 goals per game which ranks them 12th in the NHL. Currently they are in 4th in the Eastern Conference with 11 points.

Detroit will start G Pablo Barretto, he has 4 wins with a 1.99 GAA and a .936 save %. Last year he had 31 wins with a 2.30 GAA and a .922 save % in 65 games with the Red Wings. Montreal goes with G Wilf Nestor, he has 9 wins with a 1.62 GAA and a .935 save % in 9 games.

Toronto Maple Leafs (3-6-1) at Montreal Canadiens (12-0-0)

The Canadiens take their perfect 12-0 record back home to the friendly confines of the Bell Center to face the Leafs. Montreal are ranked 11th in the NHL with 32 shots taken per game. Defensively, they only allow 25 shots per game which ranks them 6th in the NHL.

Richard Blaney is a 33 year old vet that was resigned to give some of the young talent on the Canadiens roster some leadership. Unfortunately he is currently not happy with his reduced ice time. His ice time has reduced from 17:56 per game in 1980-81 to 14:33 last year and this season to 6:22. The two way forward is a physical player which is his strength based on the scouts. In 6 games this year, he has 0 goals and 1 assist, in 223 career NHL games he has 41 goals and 93 points with 197 PIMs. With his limited role and the development of young players, he could be in the AHL by Christmas time. Blaney when playing has been on the 4th line.

The Maple Leafs are currently in 13th spot in the Eastern Conference with just 7 points. They are currently 5 points out of the final playoff spot. The Leafs are ranked 23rd with 28 shots per game but are giving up 37 shots a game which ranks them 29th in the NHL.

Toronto will start G Olivier Bouchard, the 35 year old has 2 wins with a 2.67 GAA and a .928 save % in 8 games. Last year he had 23 wins with a 2.84 GAA and a .914 save % in 58 games with the Leafs. Montreal starts G Wilf Nestor, he has 10 wins with a 1.56 GAA and a .937 save % in 10 games.

There was no scoring in the 1st period. Montreal out shot Toronto 8 to 5. The Leafs were 0 for 2 on the PP, Montreal was 0 for 1.

With the score tied 0-0 and about 4 minutes left in the 1st period, RD Jonathan Harper left the game with a hand injury. The 2nd period ends with Montreal out shooting Toronto 8 to 6. Montreal will start the 3rd with 1:57 left on a PP.

Montreal finally breaks the goose egg at 11:40 of the 3rd period when LW Josef Kramar gets his 5th of the year. Thats the only goal of the game as Montreal wins 1-0. Montreal out shot Toronto 10 to 5 in the 3rd and 26 to 16 for the game. Toronto was 0 for 6 on the PP, Montreal was 0 for 5.

Montreal's LW Josef Kramar was the 1st star with a goal and 17:50 in ice time. The 21 year old now has 5 goals and 9 points in 13 games. Last year he had 17 goals and 41 points in 80 games for Montreal.

Montreal announced after the game that RD Jonathan Harper will be listed as day to day with a bruised thumb. The 33 year old has 1 goal and 8 points in 13 games. Last year he had 16 goals and 47 points in 82 games.

Tampa Bay Lightning (3-5-1) at Montreal Canadiens (13-0-0)

Montreal will be looking for their 14th straight win of the season. We will host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Montreal now has a 9 point lead on the 2nd place Bruins. The Canadiens continue to struggle on the PP, we are ranked 26th with a 8.2% success rate. While SH the Habs are pretty good, with a 94.2% success rate we rank 2nd in the NHL.

Riley Callander is not big, at 5'9" most NHLers tower over him, but he plays bigger then his frame. The past 2 seasons he has had 73 and 80 PIMs respectively. This coming from the Canadiens top offensive player. Considered a two way forward the scouts feel the strongest part of his game is goal scoring. The 2-time All-Star has 8 goals and 10 points so far this season in 13 games. In 254 NHL games, he has 108 goals and 94 assists for 202 points. This year he is taking on the role of a number 1 center.

The Lightning are currently in 13th place in the Conference with 7 points, they are currently 6 points out of the final playoff spot. The Lightning have had some success on the PP, they rank 15th in the NHL with a 14.6% success rate. On the other hand, they can be taken advantage of while killing penalties, they rank 29th with a 68.4% kill rate.

Tampa will start G Michael Angell, he has 2 wins with a 3.67 GAA and a .890 save % in 8 games. He had 30 wins with a 2.81 GAA and a .910 save % with the Lightning last year in 61 games. No surprise, Montreal goes with G Wilf Nestor, he has 11 wins with a 1.42 GAA and a .941 save % in 11 games.

In a tight checking 1st period, the shots were 6 a piece. Both Montreal and Tampa were 0 for 3 on the PP in the period.

Tampa Bay gets on the board at 2:37 of the 2nd period, LW Lucas Doug gets his 1st of the season to make it 1-0. Tampa gets a 2-0 lead at 18:27 when C Mark Little gets his 2nd of the year. Tampa out shot Montreal 15 to 9 in the period and killed off a 5 minute major as well. Montreal will need a big 3rd period to extend their winning streak.

Montreal out shot Tampa 10 to 4 in the 3rd and both teams had 25 shots on the night, but the difference is that Montreal could not convert on the PP, an area that Tampa struggled on. Montreal was 0 for 10 on the PP while Tampa was 0 for 4. The streak is over.

Tampa's LW Lucas Doug was the 1st star with a goal. The 21 year old now has 1 goal and 5 points in 10 games for the Lightning. Last year in 82 games he had 10 goals and 24 points for Tampa.
