P John Cox (28-L) was sent back to Vancouver (A) and P Steve Bacha (27-R) was called up. We traded for him from Cincinnati on June 9. We gave the Reds a no-hit, no-glove slacker (C Dan Leonard(28-L)) for him, so I do not think he is going to succeed, but he is 1-0 in his 3 starts since the trade with a 2.70 ERA in 20 IP with 15 SO. Tentatively, we are scheduled to get P Ricardo Gil (22-R) back in a week.

We are in Seattle to play a three game series with the Rainiers over the weekend. They just lost a pair of games here to Oakland and have a 5 game losing streak that we can cure. We are 1-2 against them this season, all 3 games played in Portland, April 27-29. They are 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.54 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.81). The Rainiers are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.56 per game (Portland is 11th with 4.67).

Portland Beavers (31-47 .397 18.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (39-39 .500 10.5 GB in 6th place in the PCL West)

POR: Rex Williams (24-R 1-3 4.46) Rookie vs. SEA: Earl Rogers (26-R 5-6 5.52)

Williams went 7 innings last time out and only allowed 2 runs on 8 hits in a no decision.

Our win against Seattle was against Rogers. We scored 5 runs in 4.2 innings. He is their #1 starter, even though he has the worst ERA in their rotation.

9: P Marty Becker (36-L .281-32-0-3-.605)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Safeco Field
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 25,393

Top of the First:

Franklin Felix grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Dave Risinger swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit into right. Fernando Mexicano lines one into left center 413 feet for a home run! 2 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden swings at the first pitch and flies out to deep center. Shannon Kuchta grounds an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. Jack Hinckley doubles down the right field line and Kuchta scores from 1st! 3 to 0, Beavers! Sergio Vallejo grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the First:

Dan McKee works the count full and then pops out to 2nd. Adam Carter flies out to deep center. Ronaldo Entrevinhas swings at the first pitch and flies out deep down the right field line. 1-2-3!

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Jack Hinckley grounds a single up the middle and then Sergio Vallejo sends the first pitch he sees into the seats in right center! 5 to 0, Beavers. That does it for P Marty Becker. New Pitcher: Ray Kozlowski (26-R). He has 39 SO in 36.2 IP, but 33 BB. He gets the 8 and 9 hitters out, though.

Bottom of the Fourth:
The Rainiers get their first two hits of the game, but P Steve Muir keeps them off the scoreboard.

Bottom of the Sixth:
The Rainiers get their first two batters on base when 3B Fernando Mexicano boots a groundball off the bat of Adam Carter and Ronaldo Entrevinhas lines a hit to center. A wild pitch moves the runners up. Willie Bethune flies out to center and Carter tags up and scores. 5 to 1, Beavers. That is all they get, though.

Bottom of the Seventh:
A 1 out walk to Don Kelly and a hit by PH Larry Courson (30-L) puts runners at the corners and get our Bullpen jumping. Dan McKee swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! The 1-2 pitch to Adam Carter gets by C Craig Petitto for a passed ball and Kelly scores. 5 to 2, Beavers. Carter then pops out to left.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Ronaldo Entrevinhas leads off with a hit to center and Willie Bethune follows with a grounder for a hit and we make a Call to the Bullpen: LHP Woody Claar (31-L). We make a triple switch: Bob Beaver (25-L) makes his Major League debut in left and Russ Albright (29-L) comes in to catch.

Editor's Note: The triple switch is NOT a brilliant innovation, but was only made because I am rusty as a manager and pulled out the wrong guy (Petitto) trying to make a double switch...

Chris Simpson pops out to right for the first out. John Roberts grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!!

Won - 5 to 2

We had 7 hits and made 1 error
Seattle had 6 hits and made no errors

Steve Muir (W 6-5) went 7+ innings, allowed 2 unearned runs, 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP. 127 pitches. 9 batters had full counts.
LHP Woody Claar (H 4) faced 2 batters and got 3 outs.
RHP Jennings Sims (SV 1) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits and scored a run. 3B Fernando Mexicano hit his 9th home run of the season, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and had 2 RBI. CF Jack Hinckley had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Bob Beaver, in his Major League debut, struck out looking.

Independence Day

Ivan Sanchez has been removed from the rotation and will get a trial in the bullpen as a lefty specialist. LHP Dick Register will take his spot in the rotation and go today. There is no one in A Ball worth giving another look... Ricardo Gil (22-R), our other rookie starter who we have high hopes for, is out with a strained hamstring and is listed as day-to-day with no timetable for his return...

Portland Beavers (33-49 .402 19.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (42-40 .512 10.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Dick Register (27-L 0-0 3.62) Rookie vs. SD: John Riley (25-R 7-9 2.73)

This will be Register's 2nd start of the season. He gave up 5 runs in 6.2 IP in his first.

The All-Star rosters were announced today and 1B Glenn Snowden was voted in as a starter! He narrowly beat out ex-teammate Luis Hernandez of Seattle, who also made the team. Snowden is the only Beaver going to the game. Philadelphia, Boston and Los Angeles led the way with 4 players apiece on the team. Minnesota, the team we are playing today was snubbed. Editor's Note: We are not enforcing the communistic rule that every team must be represented.

Minnesota Twins (46-40 .535 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (34-52 .395 20.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

Bacha is not a rookie. In the pre-sim he was 3-5 with a 5.29 ERA in 34 games with 8 starts for Cincinnati, who we traded with to get him on June 9. Before getting called up, he was 7-2 with a 3.57 ERA for Louisville and Vancouver in A ball.
