What a daunting title!

What is the Impossible Infinity Gauntlet?

What I have done is taken every team from 1901 to 2018 and seeded them by victory total. Then loss total. Then year record was achieved. And lastly by alphabetical order.

Then the very last seeds will face each other in a Best of Seven 2-3-2 format. The winner will face the next higher seed and so forth.

Each series settings will be based on the year of the higher seeded team. This includes use of the designated hitter.

Yes, this seeding rules will be unfair to teams in strike-shortened or war-shortened seasons but sometimes life isn't fair.

Opening Day rosters will be used.

I am not listing all the seeds at this time. That's too damn many!

But I will tell you the gauntlet will begin with the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics taking on the 1919 Philadelphia Athletics. Based on 1919 settings.

The winner will face the 1981 Toronto Blue Jays.

1916 PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS VS 1919 PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS

The 1916 Philadelphia Athletics finished with a record of 36-117 and are in the conversation for Worst Team of All Time. As Bad As It Gets is a book that details the story of the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics.

The 1919 Athletics also won only 36 games while losing 104. They are, however, largely forgotten thanks in no small part to the Black Sox Scandal.

GAME ONE
Fittingly, this battle went into extra innings. Walt Kinney did not give up an earned run in the first nine innings but the 1919 Athletics committed four errors in those nine innings and the game headedinto the tenth tied at two. In the bottom of the tenth, Red Shannon hit an RBI single with runners at first and second and one out to give 1919 the walk off win.

GAME TWO
1916 just crushed 1919! The 1916 Athletics scored eight runs in the second inning and rolled to an easy win.

What comes around goes around. The 1919s jumped out to a 9-0 lead, beginning with a four run first and cruised to a 2-1 series lead.

GAME FOUR
The 1916s broke open a close game with a four run fifth and held on to even the series again. Wally Schang hit a two run single that was the big blow of the inning.

GAME FIVE
The 1916s went into the bottom of the ninth down by two. Rube Oldring tied the game with a two run double. Nap Lajoie then won it with a two out RBI single.

GAME SIX
The first elimination game of the gauntlet is decided by a single run. Amos Strunk hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth and the 1916s held on to eliminate the 1919s.

The 1981 Toronto Blue Jays went 37-69 in the strike shortened season. This will be the first series to see the DH in play. The winner will face the 1935 Boston Braves.

GAME ONE
The Athletics made it four wins in a row. They doubled the Blue Jays hit total to go up 1-0 in the series.

GAME TWO

The Braves were almost as bad as the Athletics, posting an abysmal record of 38-115. 40 year old Babe Ruth signed with the 1935 Braves. The winner moves on to face the 1904 Washington Senators.

GAME ONE
Aren't the Athletics supposed to be the worst team of all time? Nap Lajoie hit a two run double in the top of the third and Bullet Joe Bush went the distance.

GAME TWO
Damn! Jing Johnson gets the complete game shutout. And that's just the beginning of the problems for the Braves.

The Senators lost 113 games in 1904 while winning just 38. The winner of this series will face the 1981 Chicago Cubs.

GAME ONE
Can the Athletics run finally be brought to an end? In the bottom of the eighth, Jake Stahl tied the game with an RBI double and Jack Thoney brought Stahl home with a single to give the Senators the series opener.

1904 WASHINGTON SENATORS VS 1981 CHICAGO CUBS
These are last two teams left in the gauntlet who won less than 40 games. The Cubs are the second team in the gauntlet from the 1981 split season strike year. The winner will face the expansion 1962 New York Mets.

GAME ONE
Casey Patten pitched eight solid innings to lead the Senators to an opening game win on the road. He got great offensive support as the Senators collected 13 hits. Bill Coughlin led the hit parade with three singles.
Final score: 1904 Washington Senators 5 1981 Chicago Cubs 1.

GAME TWO
The Senators end up taking both games in Chicago and head home with a 2-0 lead in the series. Bill Coughlin broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the top of the sixth and the Senators put it away in the eighth thanks to two Cubs errors.

GAME THREE

The Senators have only lost one game in two series combined. The Mets were an expansion team in 1962 and went 40-120. The winner will face the 1981 San Diego Padres.

GAME ONE
The Mets scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and the Senators stranded the bases loaded in the topof the eighth. It was the Senators first road loss of the gauntlet.

GAME ONE
The Mets were in great shape to make a decent run as the next several teams would have been seeded below the Mets had the Mets not played in a strike-shortened season. Pete Falcone went the distance to take the opener as the Pirates committed four errors.

GAME TWO
Pitcher's duel. Mike Scott and Bob Friend took their teams into the ninth inning of a scoreless tie. In the top of the eleventh, Mike Cubbage hit an RBI single off of Woody Main to break the scoreless tie and give the Mets a 2-0 series lead.
Final score: 1981 New York Mets 1 1952 Pittsburgh Pirates 0 11 innings.

GAME THREE
The Pirates came into the game having been held scoreless for 18 straight innings. The drought reached 21 innings before Ralph Kiner hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Mets loaded the bases with nobody out but could only bring one of the runners home. The Mets continued to struggle in home games in the gauntlet, falling to 1-3 as the home team as the Pirates cut the Mets lead in the series to 2-1.

Mike Scott and Bob Friend took their teams into the ninth inning of a scoreless tie.
