Not counting the 4,000 minor leaguers whose contracts are expiring, we have only 1 player who can be a free agent this off-season: RP Lou Hertzberg (31-L). He has been classified as a Type B free agent and I am tempted to let him go and grab the draft pick as we have quite a few young and talented looking left-handed relievers hanging around. But he is one of my favorites, especially since the scouts don't think he is worth a hoot, and none of the young lefties would probably match his 1.55 ERA in 87 IP. So I made him a contract offer of 3 years at $300,000 per season and he did not haggle at all and said he would consider it. We'll see, but he is probably in the fold.

As far as Arbitration is concerned, we have 6 players eligible. C Tod Schreck (32-R) will be non-tendered, so that leaves 5. I spoke to each of the 5 about a contract extension, but they all want more money that I think they are worth, except RP Don Schmidt (27-R), who wants $330,000 for 1 year. He was on a minimum salary ($50,000) for the past two years. I offered him $300,000 and he is considering it. C Dennis Webb (26-L) is considering an offer of $140,000 for 1 year. He was also on the minimum the past 2 season. RP Barry Chapman (27-R) will be taken to arbitration. SS Dave Lesley (27-R), who has also been paid the minimum, wants $630,000. We'll go to arbitration with him. The last one is C Dave Benya (27-S), who had a great half of a season. He made $65,000 this past year and wants $1 million plus to sign... If I knew that he could hit and play defense the way he did this past season for a full year, I would be happy to pay him the dough. But in Year I, he hit .220 with a .584 OPS... And he missed significant time to injury this year. So we will go to arbitration with him and hope to heck he does not get what he wants...

Owner Mickey Shenker (78) has bumped our budget just a tad to $16 million. It was $15.6 million this year. That leaves us 20th of the 24 teams. The Giants lead the way at $24.4 million. We need to get the fans coming out to see our games so we can have more money when all these great young players we have start needing some serious cash to hang around.

Also, 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R) and 1B Jeff Austin (30-R) are both getting big raises this year. Bouvet will get boosted from $1.1 million to $2 million ($2.9 million next year!) and Austin is getting bumped from $950,000 to $1.1 million. 3B Larry Sinchak (31-R) will hang around for another year at $1.8 million.

We had bad news on P Lonny Tomski (28-R). He has suffered a setback in his recovery and needs additional surgery... The doctors say he probably will not be able to pitch until next June at the earliest....

Both RP Lou Hertzberg (31-L) and C Dennis Webb (26-L) signed the contract offers we made to them today. Hertzberg will get $300,000 a year for 3 years. Webb will get $140,000 for 1 season.

Free agents files today. There are 9 Type A free agents, the same as last season. But whereas there were 56 Type B Free Agents last year, there are only 29 this year. It will make keeping track of the draft order a lot easier!

The Beavers are not in the market for any free agents. We would like to get a catcher that can hit left-handers, but there are no free agents that would do. I am not sure if I will trade for one or not, as I don't want to get rid of any of the catchers we have. Maybe Dave Benya and his million dollar salary, but I am afraid he might live up to it... Otherwise, our team is pretty much set for Year III already. But you never know; I may get to coveting someone....

Two of the nine Type A free agents were signed today. C Ivan Meraz (32-R) of Philadelphia was signed by Chicago to a 5 year, $11.2 million contract. The last year is a vesting option, requiring 480 PA. C Dan Kaczmarek (30-R) of Dallas was signed by Philadelphia to replace Meraz. He signed a 7 year, $13.6 million deal, with the final year a vesting option requiring 480 PA.
