Grigg has not pitched in 11 days, being our #5 starter and getting skipped, though he has better stats than anyone else.... His last outing was an 8 inning relief stint in that 19 inning game. He did not allow a run.

Larry Sinchak grounds one back to the pitcher, but DeLeo makes a bad throw to 2nd and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Jeff Schottler grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Grigg scores, 5 to 0, Beavers. Jeff Austin doubles to right center and Griesbach scores! 6 to 0, Beavers! Paul Bouvet lines a hit to center and Schottler scores! 7 to 0, Beavers! 2 hits for Bouvet in one game! Dave Lesley lines a hit to left and Austin scores! 8 to 0, Beavers! That's it for DeLeo. New Pitcher: Jeff Haynes (30-L) with a 1.01 ERA in 26.2 IP. PH Rollie Ferree (29-R) lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded again. Tony Casarez grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Bouvet scores. 9 to 0, Beavers. P Bob Grigg is up and our chance at 10 runs seems lost, but a passed ball scores Lesley! 10 to 0, Beavers! Steve Stevenson leads off with a grounder up the middle for a hit. With 2 outs, he goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. We then intentionally walk a batter who is hitting under .100... (Bull Barrieau) P Marty Schall strikes out.

Bottom of the Fifth:

We go down in order...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Down in order again....

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Dave Benya beats out an infield hit, our second hit of the day. On the first pitch to Tony Casarez he heads for 2nd, but they have a pitchout on, but the throw is late! Tony Casarez pops out to right...

Top of the Eighth:
They let P Marty Schall bat and they go down in order.

Bottom of the Eighth:

We let P Brian Hagans bat and he grounds a hit into center! Bob Draper bunts him over to 2nd. Larry Sinchak swings at the first pitch and flies out to left... Jeff Schottler swings at the first pitch and flies out to left...

Top of the Ninth:

PH Ray Calandra (32-L), batting for Gary Olson, perhaps the best hitter on their team (at any rate he owns 2 of their 3 hits today), lines out to 1st, Jeff Austin making a fine grab! Jim Thut, batting .153 is allowed to hit and strikes out! Rick Ingledue grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Ninth:

This game is still scoreless, if you hadn't noticed... Each team only has 3 hits... Jeff Austin fouls out to 1st. Paul Bouvet swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left! If he scores, he will go back to the leadoff spot... He steals 2nd. Dave Lesley flies out to left. Bouvet tags up and takes 3rd. Dave Benya grounds out to short...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:

P Brian Hagans has thrown 109 pitches. We will try to get him through one more inning, but if anyone reaches, he will be pulled. Steve Stevenson lines a hit to left... Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (30-L). Dennis Webb comes in to catch in a double switch. Steve Church tries to bunt, but whiffs on his first attempt and fouls the second try off. He then takes strike three! PH Leon Vosters (34-R), batting .342 with 4 HR in 114 AB and a .915 OPS, is sent up... He grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!!!

Bottom of the Tenth:

P Marty Schall has only thrown 95 pitches. With 1 out, Dennis Webb takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Bob Draper lines out to 2nd and they double off Webb....

Top of the Eleventh:

Bill Barrieau, with his under .100 average, leads off with a grounder to left for a hit... P Marty Schall is allowed to hit and lays down a good bunt to send the runner to 2nd. We walk Juan Aleman intentionally... SS Jerry Walker (29-R) grounds a 1-2 pitch to right for a hit and Barrieau heads home... He looks like a dead duck, but Bob Draper throws the ball into the Willamette River.... 1 to 0, Twins. Runners are now at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out... We walk Jim Thut, a .152 hitter, intentionally.... I really HATE all these intentional walks... Rick Ingledue strikes out. Steve Stevenson swings at the first pitch and flies out to left.

Bottom of the Eleventh:
If Marty Schall and his 5+ ERA coming into this game shuts us out in 11 innings, I am going to go ballistic.... He has thrown 111 pitches. PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) is sent up for Larry Sinchak. He swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd... Jeff Schottler swings at a 3-2 pitch and lofts a hit into right center. That's all for Schall. New Pitcher: Eddie Amos (36-L), their closer. 4-10 with a 4.10 ERA. That's some nice symmetry... He got a save by pitching a perfect 9th in the first game of this series. Jeff Austin lines out to center. 2 outs. Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd....

Lost - 1 to 0 in 11 innings

We had 5 hits and made 1 error
Minnesota had 6 hits and made no errors

Brian Hagans went 9+ shutout innings, allowed 4 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 8. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (L 6-4) went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 2 walks (2 INT) and struck out 2.

Marty Schall (W 3-4) went 10.1 shutout innings, gave us 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2.
Eddie Amos (SV 19) faced 2 batters and got them both out.

C Dennis Webb drew a walk in his only trip to the plate.

Tuesday, August 27, Year II

The Milwaukee Brewers are in Portland to play a 3 game series beginning with a double header today. The first game will be a makeup of a rainout in Milwaukee, so the Brewers will be the official home team. They swept the Oaks in 3 games over the weekend. We are 4-5 against them on the season and lost 3 of 4 the last time they were in the Skydome, back in the dark days of May, 24-27. The Brewers are 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.40 runs per game (Portland is still #5 with 4.24). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.08 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.18).

Milwaukee Brewers (65-64 .504 5.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East) at

Eckert is 3-1 in his last 5 starts. His last outing was a no decision, but he went 8 IP and only gave up 2 runs and 3 hits. We beat him the only time we face him this season, but he only gave us 2 runs and 6 hits in 8.1 IP. He walked 2 and struck out 8.

It is odd being the visiting team in your own ballpark...

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 19,142

Top of the First:
Woody Griesbach grounds out to 3rd. Rollie Ferree tries to bunt his way one, but misses the ball and then flies out to right. Jeff Schottler strikes out...

Bottom of the First:
Bill Valdez grounds out to short. Tom Harriger grounds out to 2nd. Larry Reichler flies out to right! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
We do down in order...

Bottom of the Second:
Don Duggan leads off with a monster blast to left that is a no doubt home run, if it stays fair.....it slices foul! He then lines a 3-2 pitch to center for a hit. Gene Belt walks on 4 pitches... Barry Anderson, playing for the injured Pedro Perez, lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with no outs... Diego Cordova strikes out. Dave Glinsky, a .179 hitter is up, but P Frank Martin balks... Duggan scores. 1 to 0, Brewers. Glinsky takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three. P Jerry Eckert takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4.... Bill Valdez flies out down the right field line!

Top of the Third:
Phil Parker becomes our first base runner of the game when he draws a walk, but Dave Lesley immediately erases him with a 6-4-3 double play ball... P Frank Martin draws a walk. That is something you do not see every day: both pitchers walking each other. Woody Griesbach grounds out to short and we are still hitless...

Top of the Fourth:

We go down in order... What has happened to our hitters?

Top pf the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Phil Parker gets our first hit of the game with a triple to right center. They walk Dave Lesley intentionally. P Frank Martin strikes out.

Top of the Sixth:

Woody Griesbach leads off with a line drive single to center. Rollie Ferree bunts him to 2nd. Jeff Schottler strikes out looking... Jeff Austin hits a home run to left!!!!! 2 to 1, Beavers!!! Paul Bouvet strikes out...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Tom Harriger leads off with a double to right center and we get the Bullpen up. Larry Reichler swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Harriger goes to 3rd. Don Duggan launches one to deep left, but it stays in the park and Rollie Ferree catches it, but Harriger trots home to tie the game at 2 all. Gene Belt swings at a 3-2 pitch and triples to left center... Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (26-L). Barry Anderson swings at the first pitch and lines out to left.

Top of the Seventh:
Larry Sinchak leads off with a walk. Phil Parker tries twice to lay down a bunt, but comes up empty both times. He then ends up drawing a walk! Dave Lesley bunts the runners up. With the infield in, PH Eddie Thomas (26-R) swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd and the runners hold... They walk Woody Griesbach intentionally to pitch to Rollie Ferree, who strikes out... The Ferree dust has worn off...

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R). He strikes out the side in order!

Top of the Eighth:
With 1 out, Jeff Austin triples to right! They walk Paul Bouvet intentionally. That's their third intentional pass of the game. Bouvet gets caught stealing... He is not one of my favorites anymore... Why did I trade for him? They walk Larry Sinchak intentionally to pitch to Phil Parker. I have nothing but lefties on the bench, besides C Dave Benya, a switch hitter, but he cannot hit lefties any better than Parker... Parker grounds a hit to center!!!! Austin scores and Sinchak makes 3rd! 3 to 2, Beavers! Dave Lesley swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center.

Bottom of the Eighth:

Top of their order. With 1 out, Tom Harriger grounds one to short, but 1B Jeff Austin drops the throw... Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (30-L). Larry Reichler lines out to center. PH Tim Bryant (30-R), batting .298 with 3 HR in 47 AB with a .973 OPS, is sent up... He grounds out to 1st, 3-1!!

Top of the Ninth:
PH Dave Benya (27-S) lines a hit to center. P Jerry Eckert's day is done. New Pitcher: George Thomas (34-L), their troubled closer. 4-10 with a 5.98 ERA and 27 SV. The League is hitting .323 off him. Righties: .354. Benya gets caught stealing.... Woody Griesbach doubles to right. Rollie Ferree lines out to short and they double off Griesbach.... the Ferree dust is definitely all gone...

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R), our own shaky (of late) closer. Gene Belt swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! Schmidt's first strikeout in 5 games. Barry Anderson lines a hit to left... PH Steve Weiss (31-L), in his first AB as a Brewer, is sent up. He was released by Baltimore on August 5. He was 8 for 33 (.242) with no HR for them. You must be really bad to be released by Baltimore.... He grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. 2 outs. PH Bob Coyne (37-L), their 2 time All-Star catcher, is sent up. He swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to short and THIS Ball Game....no, Dave Lesley boots it.... PH Dave Mancini (27-L) is next. He is hitting .242 with 2 HR in 186 AB. He strikes out and finally, THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

For the Brewers, LF Barry Anderson had 3 hits.

GAME TWO
MIL: Tom LaForce (30-R 5-12 5.15) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 10-7 2.94) 2 time All-Star

LaForce has won 2 of his last 3 starts, including a shutout. His one loss was to us, but he only gave us 3 runs in 7 IP. He beat us twice earlier in the season with very strong outings.

Top of the First:
Bill Valdez, after failing to get a bunt down, swings away and strikes out! Tom Harriger swings at the first pitch and flies out to right. Gene Belt flies out to shallow center ! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Jeff Schottler leads off with a double into the left field corner! And then gets thrown out trying to steal! Yay, Jeff, you stupid moron! Larry Sinchak lines a hit to right. Yay, Jeff! Bob Draper grounds a sure double play ball back to the pitcher, but they only get the force at 2nd, 1-6, because Larry Sinchak took the shortstop out with a flying tackle. Unfortunately, he hurt himself... Gordon Saunderson grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Eddie Thomas will go in to play short and Dave Lesley will move to 3rd, where he made 3 errors the last time he played there...

Bottom of the Second:

Paul Bouvet leads off with a home run to left! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Third:

With 2 outs....2 outs, mind you...Bill Valdez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. Tom Harriger then lines the Brewers' first hit of the game to left and Valdez scores... Tie Game : 1 to 1. Gene Belt then gets their second hit, a double to left, and Harriger scores... 2 to 1, Brewers. Larry Reichler grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Bob Draper leads off with a double to right center. And then gets thrown out trying to steal... Gordon Saunderson lines a hit to center. That is two sure runs we have run ourselves out of.... Paul Bouvet lines out to short. Dave Lesley flies out to right. We have outhit them 8 to 3, but trail 2 runs to 1.

Bottom of the Seventh:
Dave Benya lines one to center and Gene Belt drops it for a 2 base error. If Benya gets caught stealing, I will confiscate everybody's cleats.... Tony Casarez flies out to left and Benya tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. PH Dennis Webb (26-L) takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. And then gets picked off at 1st by P Tom LaForce.... 2 outs... Jeff Schottler grounds out to 3rd....

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Bill Valdez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... He steals his 55th base of the year... Tom Harriger grounds one to 3rd, the first chance Dave Lesley has had there since moving over earlier from short, and he throws the ball away for a 2 base error... Valdez scores. 3 to 1, Brewers. Gene Belt fouls out to 1st. Larry Reichler flies out to left. Tim Bryant lines out to right.

Bottom of the Ninth:

We are just plain snake but against this bum pitcher...He is 3-11 against the rest of the League, but will be 3-1 against us after this inning.... Dave Lesley leads off with a triple to center! That ends Tom LaForce's day. New Pitcher: George Thomas (34-L), their beleaguered closer. PH Jeff Austin (30-L) swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Lesley scores. 3 to 2, Brewers. The run means a lot less than that out... PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) flies out to left.... PH Rollie Ferree (29-R) grounds out to 3rd....

Lost - 3 to 2

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 4 hits and made 1 error

Don Panighetti (L 10-8) went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP.
LHP Mitch Dowdell went 2 innings, allowed 1 unearned run, 1 walk and struck out 2.

Tom LaForce (W 6-12) went 8+ innings, gave us 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 2. He finishes the season 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA against the Beavers. Against the rest of the League, he is 3-11 with a 5.77 ERA....
LHP George Thomas (SV 28-) pitched a perfect 9th. He is another who likes pitching against us. It was his 6th save against the Beavers. He does have one loss against us, but his ERA is 3.68 against Portland compared to 6.15 against everyone else....

CF Jeff Schottler had 3 hits with a double, but negated 2 of them by getting caught stealing. LF Bob Draper hit a double, but erased that, too, with a caught stealing. 2B Paul Bouvet hit his 7th home run as a Beaver. SS/3B Dave Lesley hit a triple, drew a walk and scored a run, but made a huge error at 3rd, where he will never play again, if I can help it. PH Dennis Webb drew a walk, but erased that, too, by getting picked off.

Pepe's report on Larry Sinchak is a bruised elbow that will bother him for about a week and affect his throwing. Well, it can't affect it enough, I don't think, to make his throwing worse than Dave Lesley's at the hot corner, so we'll play him and see how it goes. 3B Omar Flores (21-L) should be off the DL by the weekend.

Friday, August 30, Year II

3B Omar Flores (21-L) was activated from the Disabled List and P John Alecci (26-R) was returned to Vancouver (AAA).

We are in Minneapolis to play the Twins a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Los Angeles. We are 5-4 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were in the Metrodome. The Twins are 9th in scoring in the PCL with 3.89 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.21). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.26 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.19).

Portland Beavers (83-51 .619 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Minnesota Twins (63-70 .474 9 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 9-6 3.29) Rookie vs. MIN: Marty Schall (31-R 3-4 4.39) Rookie

After pitching 3 straight complete games, including 2 shutouts, Gaspar gave up 5 runs in 7.2 IP in his last start, which was against these Twins. He won, though, and has won his last 4 starts.

Schall shut us out for 10.1 innings in his last start and only gave us 5 hits...

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Metrodome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 28,716

Top of the First:
Jeff Schottler walks on 4 pitches. He steals 2nd. Omar Flores grounds out to short and Schottler takes 3rd. Bob Draper lines a 3-2 pitch to center for a hit and Schottler scores! 1 to 0, Beavers. No shutout today, Schall! Draper steals 2nd. Jeff Austin strikes out... Dave Benya flies out to left.

Bottom of the First:
Juan Aleman swings at the first pitch and triples to left... Gary Olson strikes out looking. Ray Calandra squibs one back towards the mound and ends up with an infield hit, but Aleman stayed put at 3rd. Rick Ingledue swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out. 2-2 pitch to Steve Stevenson and he launches it into the seats in right center.... 3 run home run... 3 to 1, Twins. Juan Rodriguez flies out to center.

Top of the Second:
Dave Lesley leads off with a double to right center. Paul Bouvet hits a home run to left!! Tie game! 3 to 3. With 1 out, P Angel Gaspar doubles to center! But Jeff Schottler and Omar Flores both make outs.

Bottom of the Second:
Steve Church leads off with a double to left... He has an overall OPS of .630 now, but .826 against the Beavers... The next three all make outs, though!

Bottom of the Third:

With 1 out, Ray Calandra, Rick Ingledue and Steve Stevenson all single to load the bases up. We get the Bullpen active. Juan Rodriguez flies out to shallow left and the runners hold. That brings up Steve Church, the .219 hitting Beaver Killer... He strikes out!! They already have 7 hits of Angel Gaspar...

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Paul Bouvet triples to left center! He homered in his first at bat. If he can hit a reverse cycle today, all will be forgiven. Tony Casarez beats out an infield hit and Bouvet scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! P Angel Gaspar bunts the runner over to 2nd and then Jeff Schottler knocks him home with a line drive single to right! 5 to 3, Beavers! P Marty Schall is relieved of his mound duties. New Pitcher: Jeff Haynes (30-L) with an 0.92 ERA in 29.1 IP. Miguel CIntora is in to catch in a double switch, which means the Beaver Killer is out of the lineup! Omar Flores is allowed to hit, because Larry Sinchak has that bruised elbow and Flores grounds out to short.

Top of the Fifth:
PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) lines one that is slicing foul down the left field line. Rick Ingledue makes an amazing diving catch, but has to leave the game. John Ponterio (33-L) is in to play left.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, P Angel Gaspar grounds a hit up the middle. When was the last time a Beaver pitcher had 2 hits in a game? I cannot remember. I know it was not Frank Martin, because he only has 1 hit on the whole season... Jeff Schottler lines a hit to right center. Omar Flores strikes out. 2 down. Woody Griesbach triples to right center and 2 runs score! 7 to 3, Beavers! Jeff Austin grounds out to the pitcher...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Steve Stevenson leads off with a double to left center and we get the Bullpen up again. Juan Rodriguez lines a hit to right. PH Marcos Falcon (33-L) is sent up. He hit .280 with an .840 OPS in 168 AB last year, but is hitting .169 with a .505 OPS in 71 AB this season. He grounds a hit to center and Stevenson scores and Rodriguez beats the throw to 3rd... 7 to 4, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Jerry Walker grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Rodriguez scores. 7 to 5, Beavers. I'll take it. Miguel Cintora strikes out.

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Gustavo Tavarez (33-R) with a 2.69 ERA in 107 IP. With 2 outs, Paul Bouvet singles to left. The reverse cycle is off, but a double will still give him a plain old one... That should get him forgiven, I guess... Tony Casarez swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right center!! 9 to 5, Beavers!

Bottom of the Ninth:
P Dave Perez (24-L) came on in the seventh and was cruising along so well that I quit paying attention and let Christy the PA keep my scorebook.... When I got back from the bathroom the bases were loaded with 1 out!!! I took the scorebook back from Christy to look and see how it happened and according to her notations, there were 4 men on base at the moment.... I asked her how that is possible and she took the book and said that is not what her notes say at all. She says: With 1 out, Miguel Cintora grounded a single to left. Then Juan Aleman took a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and then Gary Olson also walked to load them up. Okay... Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (27-R). PH Leon Vosters (34-R), batting .345 with a .924 OPS in 119 AB is sent up. He grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Editor's Note: We need to get rid of Scouts. Ferree is now hitting .412. Without any scouts, he'd be playing every day until he cooled off, but because my scout and OSA agree that he stinks, I have relegated him to AAA and he is only playing now because of injuries. I am tempted to scrap this League and start a new one, but instead I have decided to continue playing this universe but make some very, very big changes for next year.
Shoo! Dr. Schwartz says the secret to a long-lived, thriving league is to not always let every little thing get to you.

C Dennis Webb, scheduled to start today, woke up with a virus....

We are done with the East and now it is time to close out the division win. We are in Los Angeles to play a short 2 game series. They just won 3 of 4 from Dallas here. We are 6-7 against them on the season and split 4 games with them the last time we were in Los Angeles. The Angels are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.37 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.23). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.09 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.19). Something catastrophic is going to have to happen for us to not end up leading the League at season's end; we have allowed 69 fewer runs than any other team.
