Houston Astros (41-50 .451 10 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (58-36 .617 in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: Johnny Maskell (24-R 7-5 3.04) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 6-5 2.42) 2 time All-Star

These two pitchers were traded for each other over the winter, though there were other players involved. The two other pitchers we gave them, Antoine Redd and Dave Cole are both injured right now. Maskell has won his last 3 starts, allowing only 1 earned run in each. We have never faced him.

Panighetti has lost his last 2 starts, though he only gave up 2 runs in 6 innings the last time out. We have lost both times that he has faced his former team.

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Dave Benya takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Bob Draper lines a hit to left. Jeff Austin pops out to 1st. 2 outs. Tony Casarez doubles to left and Benya scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! 3-2 pitch to Woody Griesbach and he grounds out to short.

Top of the Second:

Bob Webster leads off with a 437 foot blast to center... Tie Game: 1 to 1. Steve Coker lines a hit to right. Russ Mitchell doubles to right center and Coker scores and Mitchell ends up on 3rd... 2 to 1, Astros. Rob Mullins flies out to right and Mitchell holds. P Johnny Maskell fouls out to the catcher. Don Mosley homers to left.... 4 to 1, Astros. Panighetti was 2nd in the PCL in ERA before this game... Dave Longman grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Third:
Tony Baez reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 3B Omar Flores, goes to 3rd on a ground out and scores on a hit by Bob Webster. 5 to 1, Astros. The Bullpen is up. With 2 outs, Russ Mitchell doubles to center and Webster scores.... 6 to 1, Astros. Mitchell goes to 3rd on the play at the plate. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). A wild pitch scores Mitchell.... 7 to 1, Astros.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Tony Casarez leads off with a triple to right center and scores on a ground out by Woody Griesbach. 7 to 2, Astros.

Top of the Fifth:
Rick Dill leads off with a walk and Bob Webster grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Steve Coker lines a hit to left. Russ Mitchell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load them up with 1 out. We are not going to waste more relievers in this game than we have to, as an off day is a ways a way, so Reyna will have to suck it up. Rob Mullins flies out to center and Dill scores without a throw. 8 to 2, Astros. P Johnny Maskell strikes out.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Paul Bouvet leads off with a walk. With 1 out, Bob Draper grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Jeff Austin triples to right and Draper scores. 8 to 3, Astros. Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Paul Bouvet singles to right and the bases are loaded with 2 out. Dave Benya hits a fly ball to center, but Don Mosley drops it for a 2 base error and 2 runs score! 8 to 5, Astros. That sends P Johnny Maskell to the showers. New Pitcher: Brad Hamel (24-R). He's the guy who had allowed 15 hits in 8.2 innings, but sat us down in order yesterday in an inning of work. Bob Draper grounds a hit to right and Bouvet scores! 8 to 6, Astros. Jeff Austin doubles over the 3rd base bag and Benya scores! 8 to 7, Astros. Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the Seventh:
Woody Griesbach leads off with a double to left center. Omar Flores singles to right. Dave Lesley lines out to right and Griesbach tags up and beats the throw to the plate to tie the game at 8 apiece!! Flores gets caught stealing... 2 outs. Gordon Saunderson flies out to center.

Top of the Eighth:
On the Hill: Lou Hertzberg (30-L), beginning his second inning of work. He sits them down in order, despite an error by 1B Jeff Austin on a foul ball.

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Barry Haneke (28-R) with a 2.15 ERA. We scored a pair of runs off him two days ago. What are the odds that we can do it again? Top of our order is up. Paul Bouvet strikes out... Dave Benya beats out an infield hit. On the first pitch to Bob Draper, Benya steals 2nd! Draper hits a home run to right!!!!! 10 to 8, Beavers!!! Jeff Austin lines a hit to right. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Woody Griesbach flies out to center.

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Rollie Ferree stays in to play center and Woody Griesbach moves to right. Eddie Thomas is in to play short, Tom Borden is in to play left and Phil Parker is in to catch. With 2 outs, Bob Webster strikes out and THIS Ball Game, believe it or not, Belongs to the Beavers!!! Sweep!

Won - 10 to 8

We had 14 hits and made 2 errors
Houston had 11 hits and made 1 error

We can point to this game when Don Panighetti complains about not winning games he has pitched well....

Don Panighetti went 2.2 innings, allowed 7 runs (4 earned), 7 hits, 2 home runs, no walks and struck out 1.
RHP Jorge Reyna went 3.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (W 4-2) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 12) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

Johnny Maskell went 5.2 innings, gave us 7 runs (4 earned), 4 walks and struck out 3.
RHP Barry Haneke (L 4-3) went 1 inning, gave us 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and struck out 1.

2B Paul Bouvet had 1 hit and 2 walks and scored a run. C Dave Benya had a hit and a walk, stole a base and scored 3 runs. RF/LF Bob Draper had 3 hits with his 6th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. 1B Jeff Austin had 3 hits with a double and a triple and 2 RBI. LF Tony Casarez hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. CF/RF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. PH/RF Gordon Saunderson drew a walk and scored a run.

For the Astros, 2B Bob Webster had 2 hits with his 6th home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. C Steve Coker had 3 hits and scored a run.

We are done with Houston this year and, thank to this sweep, we win the season series, 7-5. We lost it, 5-7, last year.

Denver is in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend and finish up our home stand and finish up our season series with them. They just swept the Angels in a 3 games series at home, outscoring Los Angeles, 26 to 5, in the three games. We are 4-4 against them so far this year and split a pair of games the last time they were in Portland, April 2-3, the opening series of the season. After their pummeling of the Angels, the Bears now lead the PCL in scoring with 4.76 runs per game (Portland is still #4 with 4.27). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed (pretty good for a team in Denver) with 4.22 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.23).

Denver Bears (53-41 .564 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (59-36 .621 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Jerry Ivester (26-R 8-5 3.75) vs. POR: Bob Grigg (24-R 5-1 2.10)

We have not faced Ivester this season. We were 2-2 against him last year.

I just noticed that Grigg has the same birthday as me (9/28). I knew there was something I liked about him! Besides his excellent pitching, so far, I mean. He pitched a 4 hit shutout against the then #1 offense in the PCL, the Royals, last time out. If he could do it again against the now #1 ranked offense, I will wet my britches....and not change out of them!

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 17,798

Top of the First:

Luis Castillo grounds a hit to center. John Dobosh swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Wally Dardick pops out to shallow center. Dobosh steals 2nd. Ivan Gallegas swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left and Dobosh scores. 1 to 0, Bears. A wild pitch sends Gallegas to 2nd. Rob Douma reaches first on catcher's interference... Full count to Bob Pritchett and he swings and misses the payoff pitch! 34 pitch inning...

Bottom of the First:
Paul Bouvet swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right. He now has a 12 game hitting streak. Dave Benya grounds out to 2nd and Bouvet moves up. Bob Draper up and Bouvet steals 3rd on the first pitch and scores when their Gold Glove catcher throws the ball into left field! Tie game at 1 apiece. Draper walks on 4 pitches. Jeff Austin grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. Austin steals 2nd. Tony Casarez grounds out to 1st, 3-1.

Bottom of the Second:

Woody Griesbach leads off and launches an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a home run! 2 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fourth:

The Bears have 6 hits, but only one run. Tony Casarez gets our 3rd hit, a home run to right center and we have 3 runs!! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:

Luis Castillo gets their seventh hit and his own third and then steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Dave Benya throws the ball into the outfield. He scores on a ground out by John Dobosh. 3 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Bob Pritchett hits a home run to right to tie the game at 3 all.

Bottom of the Seventh:

PH Tom Borden (30-L), who has been a useless signing, strikes out. PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L), the greatest Rule V pick in team history, doubles to left center. They walk Paul Bouvet intentionally. What's my favorite thing to do when they walk a batter intentionally with a runner on 2nd? A double steal! And we pull one off! It's Saunderson's first steal of the season! They do not walk Dave Benya, but pull the infield in. He nevertheless beats out an infield hit and Saunderson scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! Bob Draper grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Bouvet scores! 5 to 3, Beavers. That sends Ivester to the showers. New Pitcher: Gordon DeLong (24-R) with a 2.08 ERA. He has 1 save on the season and it was against us. Jeff Austin grounds out to short.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Dave Lesley (27-R) is in to play short and Rollie Ferree (28-R) is in to play center. Woody Griesbach moves over to right. With 1 out, Ivan Gallegas draws a walk, but that is all they get!

Bottom of the Eighth:

With 1 out, Woody Griesbach grounds a hit to left. Omar Flores grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. Rollie Ferree doubles to the right field corner and Flores scores from 1st without a throw! 6 to 3, Beavers.

Editor's Note: We need to get rid of Scouts. Ferree is now hitting .412. Without any scouts, he'd be playing every day until he cooled off, but because my scout and OSA agree that he stinks, I have relegated him to AAA and he is only playing now because of injuries. I am tempted to scrap this League and start a new one, but instead I have decided to continue playing this universe but make some very, very big changes for next year.

Dave Lesley grounds a hit to right and Ferree stops at 3rd. Paul Bouvet grounds a hit to center and Ferree scores! 7 to 3, Beavers! Dave Benya grounds out to short.

Won - 7 to 3

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors
Denver had 8 hits and made 1 error

Bob Grigg (W 6-1) went 7 innings, allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 3. He threw 2 WP.
LHP Mitch Dowdell (SV 6) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 walks and struck out 2.

Jerry Ivester (L 8-6) went 6.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 7 hits, 2 home runs, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits and an intentional walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Tony Casarez hit his 11th home run of the season. CF/RF Woody Griesbach had 3 hits with his 7th home run, CF Rollie Ferree hit a double in his only at bat, scored a run and had an RBI. PH Gordon Saunderson hit a double and scored a run. SS Dave Lesley had a hit in his only at bat.

For the Bears, 1B Luis Castillo had 3 hits, stole his 50th base of the season and scored a run. He leads the majors in steals. Our own Paul Bouvet is 2nd overall with 40 for both us and Philadelphia.

Less than half the ERA of Tirado... Larry Sinchak swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Woody Griesbach grounds a hit to left. Jeff Austin flies out to right.

Top of the Third:

Greg Werner, who is batting Eighth, despite leading the League in Batting Average, beats out an infield hit. P Rick Moore bunts him to 2nd. With 2 outs, Johnny Foerster triples to center and Werner scores. 1 to 0, Bears. Wally Dardick grounds a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and Foerster scores. 2 to 0, Bears. Ivan Gallegas grounds a hit to left. Rob Douma doubles down the right field line and both runners score... 4 to 0, Bears. The Bullpen is up. Dave Bell grounds out to short.

LHP Mitch Dowdell pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 2.

Tony Tirado faced 1 batter and retired him.
LHP Rick Moore (W 6-2) went 5 innings, gave us 1 run, 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

For the Bears, LF Wally Dardick had 3 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 3B Ivan Gallegas had 2 hits with his 13th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI.

Here is an oddity: the last 7 men to hit a home run against the Beavers all hit their 2nd home run against us this season.

The Bears announced that P Tony Tirado just had a sore shoulder and should be fine in a few days.

Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 23,298

Top of the First:
Luis Castillo lines a hit to left. Let's see...a fella on 1st with 50 SB and a pitcher who refuses to acknowledge that men are on base.... I bet Castillo steals 2nd and scores on a couple of ground outs.... He steals 2nd. Right on the first count. John Dobosh does not ground out, though. He fouls out to 1st. Castillo rectifies that he did not make it to 3rd with the help of Dobosh and steals the bag himself. Wally Dardick flies out to center and Castillo scores without a throw. 1 to 0, Bears. Ivan Gallegas flies out to center.

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet lines a 2-2 pitch to center for a hit. He now has a 14 game hitting streak. Dennis Webb takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Bob Draper grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Bouvet goes to 3rd. Jeff Austin grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Bouvet scores to tie the game at 1 apiece. Tony Casarez flies out to right.

Top of the Fourth:
Wally Dardick leads off by reaching base when 2B Paul Bouvet boots his ground ball. Ivan Gallegas flies out to the wall in center and Dardick tags up and moves to 2nd. Rob Douma beats out an infield hit. With 2 outs, Greg Werner singles to center and Dardick scores. 2 to 1, Bears.

Through 4 innings, we have 1 hit off a pitcher with a 3.13 WHIP....

Top of the Fifth:
P Marcos Marin matches the hit total he has allowed with his bat with a single. Luis Castillo grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and then steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Wally Dardick lines a hit to right and Castillo heads home, but RF Bob Draper throws him out!

Bottom of the Fifth:
Woody Griesbach leads off with our second hit of the game, a ground ball single. Omar Flores bunts him to 2nd. Why are we bunting against a pitcher with an ERA over 15? Dave Lesley doubles down the left field line and Griesbach scores to tie the game at 2 all! P Lonny Tomski lines out to 3rd and they double Lesley off....

Bottom of the Sixth:
Paul Bouvet reaches on a 2 base throwing error by SS Greg Werner. Dennis Webb grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Bouvet moves to 3rd. With the infield in, Bob Draper grounds a hit up the middle and Bouvet scores! 3 to 2, Beavers! They pull P Marcos Marin. New Pitcher: Gordon DeLong (24-R) with a 2.42 ERA. Draper steals 2nd! Jeff Austin strikes out looking... They walk Tony Casarez intentionally. They walk Woody Griesbach unintentionally to load the bases up with 2 outs. Omar Flores strikes out looking...

Top of the Seventh:

With 1 out, Luis Castillo doubles to right and P Lonny Tomski calls Pepe, the trainer, out... I was going to relieve him anyway, but we cannot afford any more pitcher injuries! Even to Lonny Tomski! New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Larry Sinchak is in to play 3rd in a double switch. On the first pitch to PH Jim Mohr (35-S), Castillo steals 3rd, his 4th steal of the game. We did catch him once. We pull the infield in and Mohr strikes out looking! 2 outs. Wally Dardick grounds out to 2nd!!

Top of the Eighth:

They go down in order!

Bottom of the Eighth:
With 2 outs, Tony Casarez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Woody Griesbach also draws a walk. We let P Don Schmidt bat and he takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up! They are sticking with P Gordon DeLong, even though they have rested relievers in their Pen... Dave Lesley singles to right and 2 runs score! 5 to 2, Beavers! Larry Sinchak draws a walk to load them back up and still no sign of the Bears' manager... Paul Bouvet lines a hit to left and another run is in! 6 to 2, Beavers. Dennis Webb swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to the pitcher.

Won - 6 to 2

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 9 hits and made 2 errors

We drew 9 walks.

Lonny Tomski (W 2-3) went 6.1 innings, allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 7 hits, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 13) went 2.2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 3. At bat, he drew a walk and scored a run. He ties Antoine Redden's season record of 13 saves as a Beaver.

Marco Marin (L 0-3) went 5.1 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. By far his best start ever...

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits and 2 walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF/RF Woody Griesbach had a hit and 2 walks and scored 2 runs. SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI.

For the Bears, 1B Luis Castillo had 4 hits with a double and stole 4 bases, but only scored once.

Pepe had no report on Lonny Tomski.... He just said. "Is bad." The doctor says he's out for the season with shoulder inflammation...

Sunday, July 21, Year II

P Lonny Tomski (28-R) was placed on the Disabled List and P John Alecci (26-R) was called up from Vancouver (AAA). He was 11-5 with a 3.06 ERA for the Mounties. He was 1-1 in 3 starts for the Beavers last year with a 3.60 ERA, but walked 8 and only struck out 3 in 15 IP.

P Barry Chapman (27-R) has been waived and designated for assignment for the purpose of sending him to Vancouver. We called up Dave Perez (24-L). Perez was 4-1 with 13 SV and an 0.83 ERA for the Mounties. In 32.2 IP, he allowed 18 H, 0 HR, 8 BB and 21 SO. This gives us 3 lefties in the Pen now, but none of them are afraid of right-handed batters.

Denver Bears (54-43 .557 1.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (61-37 .622 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Danny Adame (31-R 10-7 3.47) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 6-5 2.66) 2 time All-Star

Adame is their #1 starter. He was 14-11 with a 3.26 ERA last year. Very impressive for someone pitching half their games in Mile High Stadium. We are 0-2 against him this year. Last time we faced him, he pitch a CG 3 hitter with no walks in Denver, but we somehow managed to score a run.

Panighetti was mauled by the Royals in his last start, allowing 7 runs in 2.2 IP.

5: 3B Dave Bell (26-R .366-82-6-17-1.135)

6: CF Woody Griesbach (24-R .267-180-7-20-.760) Rookie
7: 3B Omar Flores (21-L .269-234-4-17-.701) Rookie
8: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .263-251-4-24-.698)
9: P Don Panighetti (26-R .222-36-0-2-.493) 2 time All-Star

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 25,967

Top of the First:
Howard McNeal swings at the first pitch and pops out to short. Mike Carpenter grounds a hit to left. John Dobosh swings at the first pitch and doubles to right... Has Panighetti's arm turned into actual Spaghetti? Jim Mohr hits a home run to left.... 3 to 0, Bears. How can someone make the All-Star team two years in a row and just turn into a meatball in one day? Dave Bell walks and we get the Pen up.... Rob Douma grounds a double play ball to short, but Dave Lesley makes a bad flip to 2nd and everyone is safe... Tony Jimenez lines out to left. Antonio Garcia swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep center.

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet swings at a 3-2 pitch and triples to left! 15 straight games he has hit in, now. Dave Benya hits one deep down the right field line....Home run if it is fair....Fair!! 3 to 2, Bears. Bob Draper flies out to right. Jeff Austin flies out to center. Tony Casarez grounds a hit to center. Woody Griesbach swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to short, but Rob Douma throws it away for a 2 base error. Omar Flores grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Antonio Garcia doubles to center and with 2 outs, Howard McNeal homers to left.... 5 to 2, Bears. McNeal has 2 home runs on the season, both against us, his old friends...

Bottom of the Fourth:

Tony Casarez leads off with a home run to right. 5 to 3, Bears. We score every time they do, just less... Woody Griesbach singles to left, but Omar Flores and Dave Lesley both strike out. I debate about pinch-hitting for Panighetti, but decide to let him bat and he singles to left and Griesbach scores! 5 to 4, Bears. Panighetti goes to 2nd on the throw home. Paul Bouvet singes to center, but Panighetti is inexplicably sent home and us out by about 89 feet...

Top of the Fifth:
I thought for certain that since I let Panighetti hit, he would give up runs this inning, but he gets three straight fly balls to center!

Bottom of the Fifth:

Dave Benya leads off with a hit. He steals 2nd, even though Garcia is one of the strongest armed catchers in baseball and they had a pitchout called! Bob Draper flies out to right and Benya tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Can Jeff Austin please make contact? They are not playing the infield in. Austin swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd and Benya scores to tie the game at 5 all!

Top of the Sixth:

Rob Douma leads off with a grounder to left for a hit. We get the Bullpen up. Tony Jimenez lays down a bunt, but C Dave Benya throws the ball away for a 2 base error... Antonio Garcia is walked intentionally to load the bases up with no outs and we make a Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). P Danny Adame is allowed to hit and fouls out to the catcher. Howard McNeal takes a 3-2 pitch for ball...strike three!! That pitch was low and outside a good bit! Thank you, Blue! Mike Carpenter swings at a 1-0 pitch and launches it into the seats in left....Grand Slam.... 9 to 5, Bears.

Lost - 9 to 5

We had 10 hits and made 4 errors
Denver had 11 hits and made 1 error

New season high for errors and ties the high (low) mark we set last season in two games.

Don Panighetti (L 6-6) went 5+ innings, allowed 8 runs (5 earned), 7 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. It is the 4th straight game that he has given up 2 home runs...
RHP Jorge Reyna almost got out of a bases loaded, no outs jam, but not quite... He went 2 innings, allowed 1 unearned run, 1 hit, a Grand Slam, and struck out 1.
LHP Dave Perez made his Major League debut and without facing a single lefty, managed to pitch 2 scoreless innings. He allowed 3 hits.

Danny Adame (W 11-7) went 6 innings, gave us 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. He is the first pitcher this year to get 3 wins against us...

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. C Dave Benya had 3 hits with his 4th home run of the season, stole his 10th base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. LF Tony Casarez had 3 hits with his 12th home run.

For the Bears, CF Mike Carpenter had 3 hits with a Grand Slam and scored 2 runs. He also threw a runner out at the plate. 1B Jim Mohr hit a 3 run home run.

And we have to keep the sour taste of this game in our mouths until next year, because we are done with Denver for the season. We end up splitting the season series, 6-6. We won it last year, 8-4.

Down on the Farm:
The Wichita Wranglers of the Western Association (C) had their starting pitcher, Jim Hightshoe (21-R) get hurt facing his first batter. The game went 17 innings and the Wrangler Bullpen pitched 16.2 scoreless innings and Wichita won, 1 to 0. Tung Pan (22-R), a Chinese pitcher, got the win with 4 innings of shutout relief. He walked 5, but only gave up 1 hit.

Random Fact of Week: I do not think I have mentioned this before, but we lead all of Baseball in Stolen Bases with 156 in 99 G. That is a pace to get 255 on the season. Now, I am not a big stolen base guy, but I AM a big speed guy and when you have speedy players, you are going to get some stolen bases. And top to bottom, we are the fastest team in Baseball.

We have the day off, but it was not a good day...

Pepe reported that the doctors say both P Frank Martin (27-R) and CF Jeff Schottler (25-R) are going to be delayed in their return from the Disabled List. Schottler is going to another 10 days to 2 weeks. Martin has been reclassified to 'indefinite'....

P Brian Hagans (26-R) is still on schedule to be back within a week.

We are 175 miles north of Portland to play Seattle a 3 game series. They were swept in 4 games at Dallas over the weekend and have lost 6 in a row. We are 6-1 against them so far and won 3 of 4 the last time we were in the Kingdome, June 6-9. They are 8th in scoring with 3.97 runs per game (Portland is still #4 with 4.29). They lead the PCL with 104 HR and are last in SB with 61. They are 12th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 5.07 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.32). They are the only PCL team with an ERA over 4 and theirs is 4.48. Ours is 2.98, the best.

Portland Beavers (61-38 .616 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (33-66 .333 28 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 5-4 3.75) Rookie vs. SEA: Les Theis (28-R 2-1 3.76)

We won the only time we have faced Theis, but it was in extra innings and he only gave us 2 runs in 7.1 IP. He has had 7 starts.

Gaspar went 8 innings and only allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits in his last outing.

8: 2B Rodger Moreno (27-R .202-99-2-11-.551)
9: P Les Theis (28-R .083-12-0-0-.250)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Kingdome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 11,047

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet pops out to short. Omar Flores swings at the first pitch and lines out to the pitcher. Dave Benya fouls out to 3rd.

Bottom of the First:
Randy Hobson comes into the game with a 10 game hitting streak and removes all the drama right away by making it 11 with a double to right. Paul Blaine strikes out. Mark Fenik swings at the first pitch and squibs one down the 3rd base line for an infield hit... Terry Singer lines a hit to left and Hobson scores. 1 to 0, Seattle. It seems to me that we are getting outscored in the first inning by about 400 runs on the year.... I should look it up... It may be only 399.... Jim Perkins walks to load the bases up with 1 out. Joe Wasserman grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and everyone moves up a base and a run scores. 2 to 0, Seattle. Ken Murray grounds one to 2nd and our Gold Glover, Paul Bouvet, boots it and another run is in... 3 to 0, Seattle. Rodger Moreno flares a hit to right and yet another run crosses the plate and Murray beats the throw to 3rd.... 4 to 0, Seattle. P Les Theis grounds out to the pitcher.

Top of the Third:
We get our first base runner with 2 outs when P Angel Gaspar beats out an infield hit... But Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Fourth:
Omar Flores leads off with a double to right center and Dave Benya singles to put runners at the corners with no outs. Jeff Austin doubles to right and Flores scores. 4 to 1, Seattle. Tony Casarez swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Benya scores and Austin goes to 3rd. 4 to 2, Seattle. Woody Griesbach swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Austin scores. 4 to 3, Seattle.

Bottom of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Ken Murray reaches on an error by 3B Omar Flores. Rodger Moreno gets another hit and the Bullpen is up. P Led Theis bunts the runners up. Randy Hobson, the one good hitter they have is up and we do NOT walk him.... Why? He is a lefty batting over .300 and Gaspar is a sidearmer who does not care for lefties and a righty is on deck who is batting .219.... Hobson doubles to left center.... both runners score... 6 to 3, Seattle. Just stupidity.... Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Paul Blaine grounds out to short...

Top of the Eighth:

Monte Rodgers (26-L) is in to play short for the defensively challenged Paul Blaine, but he is not a whole lot better. With 2 outs, Omar Flores doubles over the 1st base bag. Dave Benya grounds one to 2nd, but Rodger Moreno throws the ball away for a 2 base error and Flores scores. 6 to 4, Seattle. Jeff Austin hits a harmless fly ball to center...

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). With 1 out, Rodger Moreno hits a home run to straight away center... 7 to 4, Seattle. He came into the game hitting .202 and has 3 hits today....

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Danny Karpowicz (30-R), their closer. 1-7 with a 4.03 ERA and 13 SV in 17 chances. With 1 out, Woody Griesbach beats out an infield hit. Bob Draper lines a hit to left and Dave Lesley grounds a hit to left to load the bases up. PH Tom Borden (30-L), who is 1 for his last 22, is sent up because he likes to draw walks and Karpowicz walks almost 4 per 9 innings. He does not walk, but grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Griesbach scores. 7 to 5, Seattle. 2 outs. Paul Bouvet, 0 for 4 on the day with his 15 game hitting streak on the line, is up. He drives a 1-0 pitch high and deep to center! It is going...going...caught at the wall....

Lost - 7 to 5

We had 9 hits and made 2 errors
Seattle had 11 hits and made 1 error

Angel Gaspar (L 5-5) went 5.2 innings, allowed 6 runs (2 earned), 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Jorge Reyna went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
LHP Mitch Dowdell went 1 inning, allowed 1 run and 1 hit, a home run.

Les Theis (W 3-1) went 8 innings, gave us 4 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3.
RHP Danny Karpowicz (SV 14) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run and 3 hits.

Double header!

P Brian Hagans is scheduled to be back tomorrow. I told the docs that I really needed him today to pitch in the double header, but they said they don't care about my timetables, only theirs and theirs says he can be released to play tomorrow.

So we had to make a roster move to get somebody up here to start a game today. I tried to demote LF Tom Borden (30-L), but he refused to go, so I put his bum on waivers and hope somebody claims him. We instead sent C Phil Parker (28-S) to Vancouver (AAA) with the promise that he would be back in 10 days (sooner if someone gets hurt) and called up P Michael Navarrete (28-L). It was between him and David Shoemake (27-R), who are both rested enough to pitch today, but the Seals seem to have trouble with lefties (.240 BA and 6-9 record), so we went with Navarrete. He was 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 11 SV for Vancouver but has recently been moved to the rotation due to some injuries and had pitched 2 decent games, though he was 0-1. He pitched in 5 games in relief for the Beavers last season with a SV and a 2.53 ERA, but gave up 12 hits in 10.2 IP.

We are going to be having 2 AAA pitchers making their Major League season debuts today, so it might be a long day...

Portland Beavers (64-39 .621 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

Redden has made 7 starts and 18 relief appearances. We have only faced him as a reliever and scored 2 runs in 3 innings in 3 games. He walked 5.

Alecci is making his season debut for the Beavers. He was 11-5 with a 3.06 ERA for Vancouver. He was 1-1 in 3 starts for the Beavers last year with a 3.60 ERA, but walked 8 and only struck out 3 in 15 IP.

Sunday, July 28, Year II

P Brian Hagans (26-R) was activated from the Disabled List today and P Michael Navarrete (28-L) was sent back to Vancouver (AAA). We will keep John Alecci (26-R) on the active roster until we can recall C Phil Parker (28-S) or activate CF Jeff Schottler (25-R) from the Disabled List.

Portland Beavers (65-40 .619 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (57-49 .538 8.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 2-2 3.05) Rookie vs. SF: Bill Dixon (34-R 8-3 2.63) All-Star

Dixon is their #1 starter. We have only faced him once and we won, but in extra innings. He gave us 1 run and 3 hits, no walks and struck out 7 in 8.1 IP. In his last outing, he pitched a 3 hit shutout with no walks and 7 strikeouts. He is unlikely to duplicate that feat against us, since he is pitching on short rest.

Hagans has not pitched in 2 months (May 25), so we expect him to be rusty and take a beating today. He last won a game on April 23.

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: Candlestick Park
Weather: 69 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 11 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Attendance: 36,478

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds out to short. Omar Flores grounds a hit up the middle. He steals 2nd. Dave Benya swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short and Flores makes it to 3rd. Jeff Austin strikes out...

Bottom of the First:

Dan Fortino grounds a hit to right. He tries to steal 2nd, but C Dave Benya throws him out! Ron Chestnut grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Gary Halbert strikes out!

Top of the Second:

Tony Casarez leads off with a double to the right field corner. Woody Griesbach swings at a 3-2 pitch and pokes a hit to center and Casarez scores standing up! 1 to 0, Beavers! Bob Draper strikes out and Eddie Thomas grounds into a 4-6-3 double play.

Bottom of the Second:

Marcos Barron lines a hit to right and Chris Greenwald doubles off the very top of the center field wall. Javy Vasquez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with no outs. Bill Giffin works the count full and then swings at ball 4 and misses! Sterling Baney does the exact same thing! P Bill Dixon strikes out!!! No runs!

Bottom of the Fourth:

P Bill Dixon swings away and grounds out to 3rd, Vasquez holding and Baney moving to 2nd. Dan Fortino draws a walk to load the bases up. That's 4 walks issued by P Brian Hagans. Ron Chestnut flies out to deep center!

Vasquez tries to steal but C Dave Benya nails him! Bill Giffin grounds out to 2nd. 98 pitched for Hagans and his day will be done.

Top of the Eighth:
On the Hill: Emil Stalter (35-R), beginning his 3rd inning of work. Bob Draper grounds a hit to right. We send up PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L), but they switch pitchers and bring in Paul Hawkins (35-L).

Editor's Note: I think they may have switched pitchers before I sent Saunderson up to bat, but I did not notice it until he was at the plate...

We pull down Saunderson and send up Dave Lesley (27-R). He tries to bunt a few times, unsuccessfully, and then flies out to left. PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) lines a hit to center. Paul Bouvet swings at a 3-1 pitch and lines it hard and deep to left, but it stays in the park and Ron Chestnut runs it down... 2 outs. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) flies out to right... Wait! No he does not! Gary Halbert drops it for a 2 base error and Draper scores to tie the game at 2 all! Dave Benya squibs one out in front of the plate and he gets thrown out by the catcher...

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Larry Sinchak stays in to play 3rd and Dave Lesley stays in to play short. They go down in order!

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (29-L), their closer. He got a save against us yesterday. We go down in order...

Bottom of the Ninth:
With 2 outs, Ron Chestnut lines a hit to right and makes it to 2nd when Bob Draper flubs the pickup... Gary Halbert strikes out!

Extras!

First extra inning affair since June 30.

Top of the Tenth:
All we have left on our bench is C Dennis Webb. The Seals have 3 players they have not used. Neither team has a well rested reliever left in the Pen. After two strikeouts, Larry Sinchak grounds a hit to left. Another of those Paul Bouvet triple specials would be nice right about now... But Sinchak gets picked off at 1st...

Bottom of the Tenth:
They go down in order!

Top of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: John Walko (29-R) with a 1.83 ERA, but he threw 39 pitches yesterday, shutting us out for 2 innings. Top of our order up. Paul Bouvet lines out to center. We let P Don Schmidt bat and he strikes out. Dave Benya draws a walk. On the first pitch to Jeff Austin, Benya steals 2nd! Austin grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the Eleventh:
They do down in order!

Top of the Twelfth:

We go down in order with three majestic fly balls....

Bottom of the Twelfth:
P Don Schmidt is at the 50 pitch mark and we have a couple of arms ready in the Pen. CF Stan Ward (30-R) lines a hit to left... He tries to steal and C Dave Benya throws him out! That is the fourth one he has nailed today! Two have been successful. Ron Chestnut lines a hit to left. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R), who is not fresh, but has to be more so than Schmidt at this point. Gary Halbert strikes out! 2 down. PH Bill Brown (30-R) strikes out!

Top of the Thirteenth:

New Pitcher: Harlan Martin (25-R) with a 1.80 ERA. He pitched in both games yesterday, shutting us out for 3 innings. Dave Lesley strikes out... Larry Sinchak lines a hit to left. He did not come in to the game until the eighth inning, but now has 3 hits! Paul Bouvet strikes out.... P Jorge Reyna is allowed to hit and takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three.

Bottom of the Thirteenth:

Top of the Fourteenth:

We go down in order...

Bottom of the Fourteenth:

With 1 out, 2B Domingo Santay (27-L), a .162 hitter, lines a hit to right. But that is all they get!

With 1 out, Bob Draper grounds a hit to center. Dave Lesley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. P Harlan Martin has thrown 39 pitches and is visibly struggling. Larry Sinchak flies out to center. Paul Bouvet grounds out to short... He is 0 for 7 in the game... That was our chance and we blew it...

Bottom of the Fifteenth:

They go down in order! P Harlan Martin was allowed to hit and Chris Greenwald struck out again!

Top of the Sixteenth:
P Harlan Martin is clearly gassed now... But they have no one left in their Pen, only tired starting pitchers now, who have all been pitching on short rest already. We pinch hit for P Jorge Reyna with our last player on the bench, Dennis Webb (26-L). He takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Benya walks on 4 pitches. I fell a little sorry for Martin... But just a little! Jeff Austin strike out on 3 pitches... He is 0 for 7 in the game with 3 strikeouts... And an error... Tony Casarez hits a home run to right!!! 5 to 2, Beavers! We need more, because we'll be sending a tired pitcher out there in the bottom of the inning. Woody Griesbach lines a hit to left. Bob Draper grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. Dave Lesley grounds a hit to center. Larry Sinchak grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Sixteenth:

New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L), pitching for the third straight day. Javy Vasquez leads off with an infield hit... 1B Sandy Mojica (26-R) grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! Sterling Baney strikes out looking and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Random Fact of Week:
Now that we have the best record in Baseball, the talk radio shows are not bad mouthing my trading skills quite so much... Of course, they are not praising them, either...

The PCL Batting Title race is about as close as it can get right now. Hopefully, by the end of the season, our own Paul Bouvet will be in the thick of it as well. He does not yet have enough at bats to qualify. It is also possible that he could end up with the highest Batting Average in Baseball for the season, but not win any Batting Title...

Friday, August 2, Year II

CF Jeff Schottler (25-R) was activated from the Disabled List and I have decided that I don't care if the scouts think Rollie Ferree (28-R) stinks, he is killing the ball for us, so he is staying in Portland and we have released LF Tom Borden (30-L), because he refuses to go to Vancouver (AAA) and no one claimed him on waivers.

The San Francisco Seals are in town to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 at home against San Diego. We are 8-2 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 the last time they were in the Skydome, June 18-20. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 3.76 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.34). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.77 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.32).

San Francisco Seals (59-51 .536 9.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (68-41 .624 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SF: Bill Dixon (35-R 8-3 2.60) All-Star vs. POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 2-2 3.10) Rookie

Dixon is their #1 starter. We have faced him twice and he has given us but 1 run each time, but he did not have a decision. We won both games in extra innings, including that 16 inning game we played last weekend.

Hagans made his first start after a 2 month injury layoff in that same 16 inning game last weekend and allowed 2 runs in 5 innings, though he walked 5.

6: 3B Larry Sinchak (31-R .336-116-1-8-.793)
7: CF Jeff Schottler (25-R .216-269-5-24-.610) WS MVP
8: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .267-292-4-25-.700)
9: P Brian Hagans (26-R .308-13-0-0-.769) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 74 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 14 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 27,579

Hagans does not have his control back quite yet...

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet flares a hit to right center. Dave Benya swings at the first pitch and hits one to the second deck in right!! 2 to 1, Beavers! Bob Draper strikes out. Jeff Austin strikes out. Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Chris Greenwald takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Javy Vasquez singles to right and Greenwald heads for 3rd... Bob Draper makes an awful throw and Greenwald scores on the error and Vasquez goes to 2nd. Tie game: 2 all. The Bullpen is up. Bill Giffin doubles off the wall in center and Vasquez scores. 3 to 2, Seals. Chip Carpenter lines out hard to right. We let Hagans face P Bill Dixon, who doubles to left center and Giffin scores.... 4 to 2, Seals. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Dan Fortino swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Dave Lesley hits a home run to left center! 4 to 3, Seals.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (29-L), their closer with 26 SV and a 2.94 ERA. He has 2 saves and 1 loss against us this year. Jeff Schottler leads off by flying out to the warning track in right. Dave Lesley swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short. PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) swings at an 0-2 pitch and doubles down the right field line! Paul Bouvet grounds a hit to left and Griesbach was going to stop at 3rd until LF Ron Chestnut overruns the ball! Griesbach scores on the error and Bouvet goes to 2nd! Tie Game at 4 all! Dave Benya grounds out to 2nd.

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Woody Griesbach stays in to play right and Eddie Thomas is in to play short. Gary Halbert leads off with a double to center... 2B Domingo Santay (27-L), a .160 hitter in 81 AB, grounds a hit to left and Halbert scores... 5 to 4, Seals. The Bullpen is up. We walk Chris Greenwald intentionally. Javy Vasquez bunts the runners up. Bill Giffin grounds a hit to center and another run is in... 6 to 4, Seals. Chip Carpenter flies out to deep left and Greenwald tags up, but Tony Casarez throws him out at the plate!

Bottom of the Tenth:

With 1 out, Jeff Austin beats out an infield hit and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. He goes to 3rd on another one. His run really does not matter, though... Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... 2 outs. Larry Sinchak flies out to left...

Lost - 6 to 4, in 10 innings.

I thought for sure, once we got Don Schmidt into a tie game in extra innings, we had it in the bag...

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
San Francisco had 12 hits and made 2 errors

Brian Hagans went 5.2 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. 108 pitches. I should not have let him face the pitcher...
RHP Jorge Reyna went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 2 perfect innings and struck out 3. I think we should make him the #1 reliever.
RHP Don Schmidt (L 9-4) went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits and 1 walk (INT)

Bill Dixon went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, no walks and struck out 7. He threw a WP. At bat, he hit a double and had an RBI.
LHP Joe Adcock (W 6-8 BS 7) went 2 innings, gave us 1 run, 3 hits and struck out 1. He threw 2 WP.

San Francisco Seals (60-51 .541 8.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at

SF: Jose Troche (27-L 5-7 3.78) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 5-6 3.70) Rookie

Gaspar has lost 4 of his last 5 starts. Last time out, he only allowed 2 hits in 8 innings, but walked 5 and gave up a home run and they scored 3 runs.

Top of the First:

Dan Fortino takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Ron Chestnut grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Gary Halbert strikes out!

Bottom of the First:
Paul Bouvet flies out to deep left. Larry Sinchak lines a hit to right. Woody Griesbach lines out to center. Jeff Austin strikes out...

Top of the Second:

With 1 out, Chris Greenwald jacks one to right... 1 to 0, Seals.

Through 5 innings, Troche looks like the same guy from last year, to me... We have 2 hits and 5 strikeouts...

Top of the Seventh:

Marcos Barron takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and we get the Pen up. Chris Greenwald strikes out! Javy Vasquez doubles to left center... Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Bill Giffin strikes out! Chip Carpenter, batting under .200, triples off the wall in right center and two runs score... 3 to 0, Seals.

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Dave Benya, Jeff Schottler and Dave Lesley all hit singles and the bases are loaded. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) triples to left center and everyone scores!!!! 3 to 3, tie game!! They walk Paul Bouvet intentionally and then change pitchers. New Pitcher: Harlan Martin (25-R), the poor fella that lost that 16 inning game last weekend. He has not pitched since and is fresh as a daisy. Larry Sinchak flies out to deep left center and Ferree trots home! 4 to 3, Beavers! Woody Griesbach swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-E). Surely they cannot score off him twice in a row... Lou Hertzerg, who is now my #1 reliever, is not fresh. Dan Fortino draws a walk... The Pen is hoppin'... Ron Chestnut grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Gary Halbert strikes out. Marcos Barron breaks his bat and bloops a hit over 1B Jeff Austin and Chestnut goes to 3rd... Chris Greenwald grounds out to 2nd!!!

Top of the Ninth:

Bullpen is ready. Javy Vasquez swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Bill Giffin strikes out looking! PH Dennis Williamson (33-L), batting .291 with an .884 OPS and 5 HR in 86 AB, is sent up. He works the count full and then takes ball 4... PH Dave DiMeglio (29-L), batting .189 with a .618 OPS and 2 HR in 53 AB, is next. He swings at the first pitch and grounds one hard towards the hole on the right side... 2B Paul Bouvet makes a diving stop and throws him out at 1st by a whisker and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!
