Last (but definitely not least) - Freddie Lindstrom

Lindstrom joined the team during the waning days of spring training (entry league) and became the starting third baseman for Waffletown heading into their inaugural season of 2020. He is the only original member of the starting lineup to still hold down a starting job (Rick Ferrell and Joe Sewell also remain from the inaugural season team in a back-up role off the bench).

In his 25 seasons, Lindstrom has racked up a team leading 4240 hits. He has cranked 373 home runs, drove in 2065 rbis, and has a solid career average of .278

The Spile erupted with a thunderous cheer as Waffletown made a late inning comeback in game 5 of the LDS to defeat Janesville 3 games to 2 and advance to the LCS, where they will face the Minneapolis Gauchos.

The Syrups trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 8th, when second baseman (and LDS MVP) Cecil Travis hammered a game tying home run to re-energize the crowd and the team. In the bottom of the 9th, Ernie Lombardi cracked a single with one out. Johnny Pesky came up next and pushed Lombardi to third base with a double; and Cool Papa Bell picked up the walk-off hit as he drove in Lombardi to close out the game. (side note: this is the second LDS MVP award taken home by Travis, who also won it during the 2027 playoffs)

During the regular season, Waffletown and Minneapolis met 7 times, with the Syrups taking the series 5-2; but as everyone knows, the regular season record means nothing in the playoffs.

If Waffletown makes a deep run in the 2045 post season, fans can look back to this moment in game 4 as the moment where their season was saved by reliever Paul Dean.

Leading the game 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 8th, Waffletown brought in reliable closer Wilcy Moore to take over. Moore proceeded to walk the first batter. The next batter stroked a single; as did the batter after him to load the bases with no outs. Manager Joe Shlabotnik decided not to wait and pulled Moore, and placed Paul Dean on the mound with zero room for error.

Dean proceeded to get Janesville batter Al Kaline to ground into a fielder's choice (third baseman Freddie Lindstrom threw a bullet to catcher Ernie Lombardi to get the force out at home); and then struck out Ken Griffey jr and Wes Parker to escape the inning unscathed and preserve the 1 run lead.

The Syrups would hold on to that 4-3 lead to finish out the game, tying up the series 2-2 and sending the LDS back home.

The ALCS was a 7 game slug-fest with 77 runs being tallied between Waffletown and Minneapolis. When the dust settled, it was the Gauchos celebrating their 4 games to 3 victory over the Syrups.

"We knew it was going to be tough. You don't get to be one of the last four teams standing by accident." said closer Wilcy Moore. "Just hard to watch another team celebrating on your field."

Management hopes the confidence boost the team got with their solid season will carry over to next year when they move back up to the top tier.

and your narrator would be remiss if he didn't mention this as well, considering the previous post.....

longtime starter, Mort Cooper also cracked the 4000 strikeout mark... Cooper has been with the Syrups for over 22 seasons now:

Just past the halfway mark in their second foray in the Perfect tier, fans of Waffletown are keeping their heads down and hoping their boys still think they are playing at the Diamond level. The Syrups took off like a rocket in April (19-7) which made fans and management alike wonder if the squad forgot they had been promoted. They followed that up with a decent month of May (15-13); but have been slowly sliding backwards with a sub-500 June (12-15) and a shaky run so far through July (6-11). Despite the drop in performance, Waffletown still clings to a 2 game lead in the NC East division as they sit atop at 52-46.

As the second half of the season progressed, Waffletown slowly slipped back in their level of play and dropped to second place in the NC East division. When the final out was made in game 162, the Syrups found themselves tied with Minnesota for the final wild card position.

The Spile was packed for game 163 as Mort Cooper took the mound for Waffletown to face off against Rick Reuschel of Minnesota. When the dust settled, the crown erupted in celebration as Waffletown emerged with a 5-4 victory to secure their first ever trip to the playoffs at the Perfect tier.

"Last season help us regain our confidence..." said a champagne soaked Johnny Pesky, who drove in 2 of Waffletown's 5 runs in the final game. "...now we just have to play loose. We're the bottom team in the post season, so all the pressure is on everyone else."

Waffletown will head to Battery Point for the wild card game. The Syrups know they are in for a tough test as they only managed 1 win in 6 games against Battery Point.

and it was a quick one-and-done for Waffletown as they fell to Battery Point 7-1 in the wild card match.

After one of their better runs last season with their first post-season birth at the top tier, Waffletown fans were expecting similar results this season, as they were fielding the exact same lineup. Unfortunately, just like flipping the same coin can return to distinct results, trotting out the same lineup can return drastically different results as well.

As the all-star break arrived, the majority of the Syrups lineup welcomed the mini break to lick their wounds and prepare themselves for the long haul of the second half. The only member of the team that didn't get a break was first baseman, George Sisler, who was selected at the teams lone all star representative.

"Right now, it's looking like we're on the fast track back to Diamond." said center fielder Martin Dihigo. "And I'm a big reason why." He added in frustration, as his dismal .185 average is an all time career low at this point. Management disagrees that Dihigo is a big reason for the team's lackluster performance, as the team ranks near the bottom in most offensive and defensive categories.

"If you're gonna suck, might as well do it spectacularly." said manager Joe Shlabotnik.

In an otherwise forgettable season, a milestone was reached for one player...

Sliding Billy Hamilton notched his 4000th career hit off California pitcher Ted Lyons

"I'd trade a few dozen of those hits for a few dozen more wins this year" Hamilton said after the game.

Longtime Waffletown starter Mort Cooper picked up career win number 300 after a complete game 5-1 victory over the Clyde Truckers. The win also staved off another milestone of sorts as the Syrups avoided tying their all-time record for losses in a single season (96 set in 2044); though surpassing that total seems all but inevitable as there are still seven games remaining in the season.

With the season long since written off as far as any post season aspirations, the only piece of uncertainty that remained for players and fans alike was whether or not the team would "win" one of the relegation spots and head back to the Diamond tier. It was an odd scene at sports bars around Waffletown as fans gathered to watch the final 4 game series against the Clyde Truckers, with many of them rooting against their own team for fear that they would sweep the set and move out of the relegation zone. The Syrups had a 2 game cushion between themselves and Palolo, who was sitting in the 26th position in the standings.

In game 1, Harry Heilmann (4 rbis) and Mule Suttles (3 rbis) powered the offense as they won 10-5. Scoreboard watchers sighed heavily as they watched Palolo take a 9-1 thumping at the hands of Weston Pointe to reduce the relegation cushion to a single game.

In game 2, Mort Cooper and Spud Chandler went back and forth in a pitcher's duel; with Clyde clinging to a 1-0 lead until the Syrups came to bat in the 7th inning. Martin Dihigo would lead off with a single. Ernie Lombardi followed with a double, putting Dihigo on third base. Johnny Pesky came up next and drove in Dihigo with a single, with Lombardi taking third. After a pop-out from Joe Sewell; Cool Papa Bell drew a walk to load the bases. Sliding Billy Hamilton came up next and drew a walk as well to drive in what would prove to be the game winning run as the Syrups would prevail 2-1. Scoreboard watchers breathed a sigh of relief as they saw Palolo defeated Weston Pointe 5-3 to keep the relegation cushion at 1 game.

In game 3, Syrups staff ace Smoky Joe Wood took the mound and pitched a masterful game, striking out 12, and took a 1-0 lead into the 8th inning. Wood picked up two quick ground-outs before walking Trucker's 3rd baseman George Brett. After a swing-and-a miss and taking a low inside pitch for a ball, Clyde shortstop Robin Yount connected with a 1-1 fastball and sent it sailing over the centerfield wall to give Clyde a 2-1 lead. Waffletown would fail to score in the 9th and Clyde emerged victorious. A cheer rose up from Waffletown fans as the scoreboard flashed the final from Palolo - Palolo:7 Weston Pointe: 4. The relegation cushion was extended to 2 games with just one to play.

In the final game, Waffletown and Clyde had a back-and-forth game with the Syrups scoring 2 runs in the second, Clyde tying up the game with 2 runs of their own in the 3rd; and both teams plating a run in the 8th. Waffletown would blow it open with 6 runs in the 9th to win 9-3. Thankfully, the Syrups had that 2 game cushion, as Palolo would drop their final game to Weston Pointe.

Other than the previously mentioned milestone games, it was mostly a forgettable season for Waffletown. George Sisler and Harry Heilmann were a couple of exceptions to an otherwise mediocre offensive performance; with Sisler coming up just 3 home runs short of the single season team record; and finishing with a solid 30-30 season for the second time in his career.

On the opposite side, Left Gomez set a new team record for losses with 22. In an all-or-nothing type of season, Gomez managed to figure in 33 of his 36 starts as he finished with an 11-22 mark.

"Just think what I could have done if I didn't pitch like crap most of the time?" Gomez remarked.

Back in the Diamond tier for the 2048 season, the Syrups are off to a decent start at 9-6. Freddie Lindstrom (.377 avg) and Johnny Pesky (.353) are off to red hot starts at the plate, with Pesky only 26 hits shy of 4000 for his career).

(your humble narrator will be away from 10/15-27, so won't have any end-of-season updates for 2048.... of course, that's assuming my flight into Barcelona isn't cancelled tomorrow thanks to the protests... we'll see how it goes)

2048 wrap up: Syrups came up short for the division title but managed to nab a wild card spot; but it was a quick one-and-done in the playoffs.

for 2049, the team was still on auto-pilot for another run in the Diamond league. While they came up 1 win less than the prior season, their 91-71 record was good enough this season to claim the division title.

In the LDS, Waffletown brought out the brooms and swept the series 3-0 against Shasta. Third baseman Freddie Lindstrom picked up the series MVP award with his 6 for 12 performance at the plate, with one home run and 4 RBIs.

In the LCS, the Syrups took on Roncalli in a back-n-forth affair for the first five games with Waffletown taking games 1, 3 and 5, and Roncalli taking games 2 and 4. The Syrups would clinch the series with a game 6 victory and move on to the World Series. Designated hitter Harry Heilmann won the LCS MVP award with an impressive 12 for 25 performance at the plate with 3 home runs and 12 RBIs.

In the World Series, Waffletown dug a hole for themselves by dropping the first two games on the road to Clyde. The Syrups used some home cooking to get back on the winning track, taking the next 3 games at the Spile; and road the hot streak into game 6 to clinch their second championship in team history. First baseman George Sisler was awarded the series MVP to become only the second Waffletown player to win that award (Stan Spence won it way back in 2027)

Waffletown heads back to the Perfect tier, hoping they can find similar success that they've had at the Diamond level

With their latest run in the Perfect tier going about as well as their prior attempts, the Waffletown management knows they need to make some improvements if they want to compete at the top tier. Their glaring hole this season is on the pitching side, as both the starters (15th ranked era) and bullpen (14th ranked era) leave much to be desired.

On May 24th, a bus pulled up with the latest find from the Syrups scouting department:

SP - Max Lanier (96) - 1943

to make room on the roster, Jack Stivetts will be sent to the reserves, and Dizzy Dean will shift to the bullpen. Management would like to thank Stivetts for his 16+ years of service to the team as a member of the relief staff. In that time, he totaled a record of 41-27, with 10 saves and a 4.82 era. Management also hopes that the boost in stuff that Dizzy Dean will get coming out of the pen (up to 114 from 100) will make him a formidable force on the mound to match his brother. Max Lanier will settle into the starting staff in the number 2 slot.

In what's been another forgettable season at the Perfect tier, one remarkable milestone of longevity was reached on September 24th.... in his last at bat of the game in the 9th inning, long-time Waffletown third baseman Freddie Lindstrom stroked his 5000th career hit off Chippewa pitcher Jim Johnson.

"It's been a bit of a race between me and Cecil (Travis) to see who could hit 5000 first." Lindstrom remarked after the game. Fellow infielder Cecil Travis is only 4 hits away and barring a cold streak should reach it before the season is done.

Wednesday, October 5th, 2050:

In the final game of the season, Waffletown second baseman Cecil Travis got a bloop single off Jackson pitcher Steve Rogers to tally his 5000th career hit.

"Wasn't sure it was going to happen this year, but glad it's done." Travis later said.

After hovering in and around the relegation zone for the majority of the season, Waffletown managed to go 9-2 in their final 11 games to ensure another season at the Perfect tier next year. Fans aren't sure if that's good news or bad news, but they will have to wait until the spring to find out.

Outside of the milestone career hits from Lindstrom and Travis, the only other achievement of note was the defense turning the second triple play in Waffletown history (first since 2024).

With little opportunity on the horizon for any player upgrades (barring a blockbuster find from the scouting team), fans are turning their attention to upcoming milestones for long time players. (Sliding Billy Hamilton approaching 3000 runs scored; Wilcy Moore approaching 800 saves; Lefty Gomez and Eddie Plank approaching 300 wins; Mort Cooper approaching 5000 strikeouts)

and speaking of 5000 strikeouts, Lefty Gomez surpassed that mark this season and ended the year with 5131.
