2000-2001 Season in Review

Portland and Atlanta enter the NHL.

Islanders, Cleveland, Indy and Vancouver won the divisions.

Kansas City in its 2nd year finished 2nd in its division and made it to the Final Four.

But it was San Francisco defeating Philly for its 2nd Cup!

Alex Bierns decided to retire after last season at age 35 stuck in 2nd all-time with 655 goals.

Eduardo Aranda of Texarkana Texas became the 3rd overall goal leader with 652! Will he return?

2nd year Jesus Solana of Shafter, CA wins the D-man of the year award.

Olivier Ross now with KC wins his 4th MVP.

2001-2002 Season in Review

Boston, Ottawa, Houston and Seattle win the divisions.

Seattle wins its first Cup defeating Ottawa.

Eduardo Aranda is now the all time leader in goals at 670.

Tuomas Puttonen now in Buffalo moves into 3rd all time in points 1620 and 3rd in goals with 660.

Winnipeg rookie defenceman Jordan Bourasa wins MVP and rookie of the year with 89 points and plus 24

2002-2003 Season Review

Philly, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton win the divisions.

Philly takes its 5th Cup defeating LA.

Tuomas Puttonen of Buffalo is now the all-time points leader at 1,679 and 2nd all time in goals at 678.

Goalie Einer Puvi of Edmonton is 2nd all time in wins 439 and shut-outs 42.

2003-2004 Season Review

Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Dallas and LA win the divisions.

Ottawa and Dallas who both joined in the 93-94 season meet in the CUP, neither having won it before and...

EXPANSION TIME!

We can only add 4 more teams.

The next 2 teams will draw from cities that "almost" but never had an NHL team - and also don't have one in our league.

"Almost" is loosely defined here.

Vote for 2 teams

San Diego - almost got in on the ill fated 76 expansion. Due to the NHL deal with the WHL probably would have gotten in if the NHL kept expanding after 76. Also applied for the 92 expansion. The arena being leased to a WHA team probably doomed their chances in the 76 round.

Milwaukee - couldn't get an arena going for the 1970's expansions, but did inquire. Finally applied for the 92 expansion. Pulled out because paying $50 million for an NHL team didn't make sense. Talk to Vegas and Seattle.

Oklahoma City - Failed in the 98 expansion bid

Louisville - Inquired but never applied for the 67 expansion. They also inquired of the WHA in the mid 70's.

Cincinnati - Almost got in ahead of KC in 74 - was then promised to get in for 76 because KC was chosen ahead of them, which the NHL then publicly denied, so the went to the WHA and then almost got in on the original 6 team merger plan for 78.

Birmingham - Interested in WHA merger but not seriously considered

Saskatoon - Came very close to transferring the Blues there for the 83 season. Speaking of which...

New Orleans - A New Orleans group was in talks to purchase the Blues in 1975 to move to the big easy for 76. Denver Seattle and Miami were also mentioned as possible locations. Also inquired with the WHA in the mid 70's.

Norfolk (Hampton Roads) - applied for the 98 expansion. Had a name (Hampton Roads Rhinos) and a logo. Withdrew after the Whalers announced a move to North Carolina.

Kitchener-Waterloo - One of the rumoured locations where Jim Balsilllie was going to move any of the several teams he tried to purchase. His main target was Hamilton.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - the Soo Greyhounds were rumoured in the 1920's.

11 options. I'm sure I've missed some. Remember cities who almost got teams like Portland, Houston and Indianapolis already have teams in our league so they weren't mentioned here.

I dunno... I feel like we have enough teams at 32. adding too many teams would be bad, unless we switch the league model to promotion/relegation.

...or, we can move some teams around. which team is having difficulties right now?

36 is the max so I was planning on going there in the next few years and then playing this sim to the 100th season 1916-1917.

With modern arenas, including fictional ones in Baltimore and San Fran everyone's doing ok.

Einar Puvi is now the all time goalie leader in wins 483 and 2nd all time in shut outs 46 - 2nd to Steve Harts 47.

3rd year Atlanta forward Ronnie Pfister scored 110 point which was enough for MVP.

Your 2006-2007 "Never Had an NHL team but Came Close" Expansion Teams are:

Milwaukee and Cincinnati.

I really wanted to pick Hampton Roads but have a soft spot for Cincy who had 3 different "close calls" to get into the NHL in the 70's.

Atlanta, Toronto, KC and Calgary win the divisions.

But in the final it's Philly defeating LA to win its 6th Cup!

Charles-Eric Richard of Toronto scores 131 points (3rd highest season total) to win MVP!

The anyone can be nominated expansion!

We have space for two more expansion teams. Pick one city and give a convincing reason they should join the NHL. The best "reasons" will get your city into the final two slots of the NHL. As commissioner I will pick the best "reasons".

To be added for the 2010-2011 season.

Nashville, because they've done a way better job with the NHL than anybody expected.

Torn between Tampa and Hampton Roads for the final one. Gonna go with Tampa, just because you know the NHL is gonna want that Florida presence, and they've historically done way better on-ice and attendance-wise than Miami.

Nashville, because how could anyone have possibly forgotten about Nashville when doing expansions...

Maybe relocate some teams to tap into newer markets in the near future?
