At some point I'll try to write short snips on the lost info, for now let's continue with 1960:

1960 All-Star Game
Candlestick Park, San Francisco

BOX SCORE

This game began as a pitchers' duel as neither team scored a run through the first 6 innings. In the top of the 7th, Tigers 3B Larry Long broke the scoreless tie with a pinch hit solo HR of Cardinals pitcher Frank Abbott. In the bottom of the inning, the NL knotted the score back up . Dodger Brett Evans led off with a pinch hit single off Kansas City's Martin Gwaltney. Pirates catcher Doug Provenzano bunted him to 2nd. A ground out moved Evans to 3rd, and he scored on a single by teammate Roger Joyce to make the score 1-1.

The game remained tied after 9 innings despite both teams getting several runners on base. In the bottom of the 11th, the NL had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Baltimore's John Nolting struck out Giants outfielder Matt Praks. Then Joyce hit a ball toward the hole but Oriole David Lawrence, a first baseman forced into action at shortstop, showed some range by going to his right and throwing Joyce out at 1st for out 3.

In the bottom of the 12th, Nolting entered his 3rd inning of work. After recording the 1st two outs, he gave a up a single to Dodger Leo Emig, who had played both RF and 1B in the game. Emig stole second and Giants CF Jed Williams drew an unintentional intentional walk to set up a potential force out at 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Giants 3B Ike Walker then hit a single to LF and Emig raced around third to score the winning run.

AT least you have comments from varous team owners, etc. on your website, plus news stories. Although, it's got to be frustrating to tke all that stuff and copy and paste it here, which is the daunting task many are facing. (I mean, let's face it, it's impossible that the entire board would fail to write their stuff on a word processing document first. There had to be several who typed stuff out and pasted it in, but I don't think I'd want to bother right away, either, if I had to redo 2 months' worth of that. Might eventually but it would be frustrating)

Looked in and saw my ancestor had a nice career - not Hall of Fame but a good one, Amos Otis level perhaps. (Not sure about the averge to above average players of the '50s who I'd compare him to in OTL.) Interesting to see wht happens with me when I get in there in 1987.

Pirates catcher Doug Provenzano bunted him to 2nd.

Wow a bunt in an All Star Game. I don't think I've ever seen that. I guess 1960 was a simpler time.

In The News

May 12: At Cincinnati, the Phillies were losing by a score of 4-1 in the 4th inning before Willard Carte gave up an RBI single to Ted McMurray. Carte plunked the next batter, Alton Kee, and a brawl ensured. Reds manager Dixie Douglas charged the mound to tackle Carte. Both dugouts emptied with fights all around. The most cinematic fight was between 5'9" pitcher Dewey Coughlin and 6'5" Abe Arsenault, though Phillies pitcher Josh Nicely taking on McMurray was a close second. It took 12 minutes to restore order. After Carte was ejected, the next batter, Delmar Yordy, hit a 3-run HR off Matt Heal and the Reds went on to a 7-1 win.

May 27: Since there is no rule limiting the size or shape of the catcher's mitt, New York manager Ervin Skjerly combatted the passed-ball problem while catching Jack Garvin by devising an oversized mitt to gather in his fluttering knuckleball.

May 28: Detroit manager Kid Fite was hospitalized with a virus and high fever and missed 13 games. The Tigers went 2-11 under interim manager Nick Graves.

May 28: With the Dodgers leading 5-1 at Forbes Field in the bottom of the 9th inning, Alberto Val was on 3B and Doug Provenzano on 2B with one out when Ernest Baize fanned on a ball that hit in front of the plate. The ball then hit umpire Al Barlick on the right knee and bounced back toward Dodgers pitcher Brock Putnam. Baize did not move but Val raced in from 3B then stopped. Putnam fielded the ball and went after Val, ignoring pleas from the Dodgers bench to simply throw to 1B. In the run-down, Val knocked the ball out of Charlie Shellenbarger's glove and scored on the catcher's error. The photo of the incident was widely published. Pittsburgh scored 2 more runs in the inning off Brian Northington, but Vic Stokes struck out with the tying run at 2nd and the winning run at 1st as L.A. won 5-4.

May 31: When Arnie Stewart caught the ball on the end of a 6-4-3 game-ending double play, he was surrounded by a group of fans. One fan punched Stewart in the face as he raced for the dugout. Because of the incident, the Yankees announced that ushers using ropes -- a tactic used at one point with Jimmy Ditty -- will escort Stewart off the field in the future. Stewart hit a grand slam in the 7th inning of this 14-5 defeat of Washington.

June 11: Cleveland's Earl Taylor hit a 3-run homerun in the 1st inning off Boston's Mike Phipps. Taylor was knocked down by an inside pitch in his next at-bat and eventually walked. In his 4th at-bat which came in the 7th inning, Taylor hit a solo homerun and Phipps was lifted from the game. The Indians went on to win 9-4.

June 17: In Chicago, Bill Veeck's new $300,000 exploding scoreboard was silent as no White Sox players hit homeruns. When Baltimore's Mike Maginnis banged one in the 4th inning, all the Orioles lit sparklers and greeted the outfielder on the dugout steps. Sid Metcalf led the sparklers in the bullpen. The O's went on to win 5-2.

July 1: A first-refusal option for chief minority stockholder H. Gabriel Murphy to buy the holdings of Washington owner Calvin Griffith expired. Murphy will lose two court decisions in efforts to keep Griffith from moving the Senators to Minnesota.

July 3: With the Tigers leading the Yankees 4-2 in the top of the 9th, Yankees 1B Henry Laurence argued at length about a call at first when Nestor Camacho was called safe. Laurence was finally tossed. In the bottom of the 9th, Arnie Stewart hit a 3-run homer with one out off Magnus George to win the game.

July 15: San Francisco fog played havoc with a Giants-Braves game. Matt Praks' invisible triple in the 7th prompted umpire Frank Dascoli to halt play for 24 minutes. The Giants won easily 14-3.

July 18: The National League voted to expand to 10 clubs if the Continental League does not join organized baseball. The new NL clubs would invade CL territories.

July 23: In an effort to distract Arnie Stewart during his at bats in the 7th and 8th innings, Indians LF Paul Lett went into a war dance. Lett got tossed for his efforts and manager Flip DeLeon was also ejected for arguing Lett's case. DeLeon had previously announced that any more ejections would cost Lett $500 each, but he thought today's thumbing was unwarranted and waived the fine.

July 27: William Shea, chairman of Mayor Robert Wagner's New York baseball committee, announced the formation of the Continental League. The five founding cities are New York, Houston, Toronto, Denver and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

August 1960

The Orioles were easily on their way to their first pennant since the team has been in Baltimore, but they slumped in late August. After a good start to the month, they lost 9 of their final 13 games. During that span, they were swept in two 3-game series by the A's. Over that same time span, Kansas City went 10-3, allowing them to gain 6 games on Baltimore. With four weeks remaining, the A's are suddenly just 6 games out. Six of these teams' final nine games of the season are head to head.

Los Angeles is on their way to an easy pennant. This will be their third NL pennant in five seasons. They could possibly clinch within the first week of September. They will have to do it without ace Joe Helton who was lost until mid-September with a strained back muscle. The four-time POY is having one of the roughest seasons of his career. A 14-8 record and 3.82 ERA would thrill many pitchers, but it is well below the 32-year-old Helton's standards.

In The News

July 31: Dodgers RF Leo Emig's 37-game hitting streak was snapped. The streak tied the major league record set in 1923 by Josh Osbeld of the Cardinals.

Aug 2: In an agreement with the major leagues, the Continental League abandoned plans to join the American League and National League. Walter O'Malley, chairman of the NL Expansion Committee, said "We immediately will recommend expansion and we would like to do it in 1961." Braves owner Lou Perini proposed a compromise that four of the Continental League territories be admitted to the current majors in orderly expansion. Oscar Vancini's group quickly accepted. The Continental League ended without playing a game.

Aug 8: In Detroit, Kansas City 1B Charlton Brown unloaded a cannon shot in the 3rd inning. The ball cleared the RF roof and landed in the Brooks Lumber Yard across Trumbull Avenue. After six consecutive seasons of 40 or more homers, Brown is in danger of not even hitting 30 this season. At the end of August, he was hitting .290 with 24 HR and 83 RBI.

Aug 9: Detroit's Matt Perly, Larry Long and Gale Adams all homered as the Tigers beat the Tribe 6-1 in Cleveland. Perly's hit ricocheted off the top of the LF fence toward outfielder Ron Vando. The ball hit Vando's foot and was "kicked" over the fence. Umpire Hal Smith ruled the hit a home run, since the ball never touched the ground.

Aug 14: With Pittsburgh leading 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Reds outfielder Don Shelor, believing there were two outs, jogged to 1B on a grounder. The Pirates turned a 4-6-3 double play. Ralph Jones suffered bruised ribs trying to break up the play at 2B. Shelor was heavily booed by Reds fans and Dixie Douglas replaced him with Bill Hall.

Aug 16: With New York leading 6-5 in the top of the 9th, William Perry put the game further out of reach with a homerun. He was pinch hitting for pitcher Bernard Client and the hit was made possible after A's catcher Sal Poulos dropped a foul pop-up.

Aug 18: Two batters after Harmon Dego led off the top of the 7th with a homerun, Pittsburgh 3B Alberto Val believed that San Francisco's Theo Torbett was throwing at him. Val threw his bat toward the mound. Then advancing to retrieve it from Torbett, who had picked it up, the two exchanged words. Val launched a hard overhand right and the two began to brawl. Both benches emptied and Val continued swinging, decking Chippy Gaines. Torbett injured his arm seriously enough in the tussle that he will miss the rest of the season. Giants reliever Sam Van Brunt gave up the tying run in the 8th inning, but the Giants scored 4 in that same inning and won 7-3. Val was later fined $500 for the punch and Torbett and the Giants plan to sue the combative infielder for $1,000,000. Val later commented on the suit "how can they ever collect it? I haven't got that kind of money."

September 1960

After a great finish to August which included two three-game sweeps of the league-leading Orioles, the Athletics were on a roll. Many people believed they had the ability to overtake Baltimore, especially with the two teams facing off six times in the final 10 days of the season.

The Orioles went just 6-7 to start September, but Kansas City failed to take advantage, going just 7-6 themselves. Going into their first of two final series, The O's led the A's by 5 games. Baltimore showed their mettle by taking all three games in front of roaring home town crowds. The third victory clinched the first pennant in Baltimore history. It is the first pennant for the franchise since 1946.

In the NL, Los Angeles clinched the pennant early with a 9-0 shelacking of Milwaukee on September 6th. They went 18-4 in September and are heavy favorites going into their 3rd World Series in five seasons. Brock Putnam set a new major league record for wins by a rookie with 25, passing Walter Pond who had 23 with the 1951 Giants. Putnam is a lock for ROTY and may be a leading candidate for POTY. He also set a new NL record for rookie strikeouts with 159. The old NL record dates all the way back to 1903 when a young Greg Prunty K'd 151 National Leaguers with the Cardinals.

In The News

Aug 14: In the second of three games at Crosley Field, Cincy's Bobby Grissom and Milwaukee's Henri Gallais exchanged punches after Griss slid in hard at 3B in the 6th inning. Gallais came out on the short end with a swollen eye, bloody nose and jammed thumb and had to leave the game. He was back in the lineup the next day but went 0-for-3 with a walk.

World Series

To say anything other than the Dodgers are heavily favored in this World Series would be a crime. LA won 108 games and led the major leagues in practically every batting and pitching category including batting average (.283), runs scored (803), ERA (3.07), opponents average (.228) and runs allowed (523). Yes, they scored 280 more runs than they allowed. All this despite an "off" season by ace Joe Helton. The four-time POY went 15-8 with a 3.76 ERA that is the highest of his career. Second year starter Wesley McGee went 16-9 with a major league best 2.20 ERA. Rookie sensation Brock Putnam could take home the POY and ROY Awards after going 25-9 with a 3.03 ERA.

On Baltimore's side, they have the 2nd best offense and pitching staff in the majors. They were second only to LA in average (.274), runs scored (778), ERA (3.53) and runs allowed (604). However, you will notice large gaps from 1st to 2nd, like nearly 10 points in batting average, 46 points in ERA and 81 fewer runs allowed.

The O's have a strong veteran presence. 39-year-old John Nolting will make his first World Series appearance since the 1945, 1948 and 1949 seasons with the Phillies. 35-year-old Adam Sardina is going to his 2nd series. And 32-year-old Alter Sennelnekoff is going to his first, but he is a 9-year veteran of the franchise, dating back to their final seasons in St. Louis. Offense is Baltimore's driving force, led by future Hall of Famer John Degal (.275, 39 HR, 129 RBI) and upcoming 25-year-old Mike Maginnis (.284, 31 HR, 96 RBI). Degal will be making his 5th World Series appearance, and July pickup Matt Praks will make his 3rd.

My Prediction: This series pits two of the most well-respected managers in the majors against each other in Harry Finley and Carmack Alford. The Orioles should hold their own and could be a lot tougher than anyone expects. However, the Dodgers rotation should be too much for the Orioles to handle. I expect LA to win in 6 games.

WORLD SERIES

The favored Dodgers took a 1-0 lead on Adam Sardina after just one inning, but Orioles 1B David "Lumberjack" Lawrence hit a 2-run HR in the 3rd off Joe Helton. The Dodgers tied the score at 2-2 in the same inning when Brett Evans scored on a sac fly. Los Angeles took a 3-2 lead in the 4th, but this time Baltimore tied it up in the next half inning on a John Degal double. "Dirtbag" struck again in his next at bat, hitting a 2-run HR in the 8th. That was the deciding blow as Baltimore took the first game of the franchise's first World Series since 1946.

Orioles 5 - Dodgers 3

Pitcher John Nolting helped his own cause by doubling in the first two runs of the game in the 2nd inning. Then in the 4th, he singled home 2 more runs as the Orioles took a 6-1 lead on Brad De la Garza. "Notch" held the Dodgers to just two more runs the rest of the way, and the Orioles shocked the Dodgers and their fans by taking two games in L.A.

Orioles 7 - Dodgers 4

John Degal fired up the home crowd with a 3-run blast with two outs in the 3rd inning off rookie sensation Brock Putnam. The Dodgers quickly came back in the 5th. With one out, Alter Sennelnekoff walked two batters followed by a Chris Kobeck single. After another out, 1B Abraham Noel hit a 2-run single to give LA a 4-3 lead. It didn't last long though. David Lawrence reached 2nd base on an error by SS Roger Joyce, and he scored the tying run on a single by RF Pete Pugliese. The game remained tied until Brett Evans hit a solo HR in the 9th. That chased Sennelnekoff from the mound.

The Dodgers looked to finally have a win in hand when closer Brian Northington got the first two batters out in the bottom of the 9th. SS Kenneth Whitt kept the game alive with a single and he moved to 2nd base on Charlie Shellenbarger's passed ball. David Lawrence then doubled, scoring Whitt to tie the game. In the bottom of the 11th, Northington was relieved after pitching three innings. Roy Creech came in to pitch, and the first batter he faced, 2B Mark Geil, hit a solo HR to win the game and give Baltimore a stunning 3-0 series lead.

Dodgers 5 - Orioles 6

Determined to not be swept, L.A. scored 3 runs in the 1st inning off Adam Sardina. A solo HR by Pete Pugliese in the 5th cut the Dodgers' lead to 4-2. Then in the 7th, Mark Geil led off with a double. After two outs, David Lawrence drove Geil in with a double of his own to make it 4-3. The O's got two runners on base with 2 outs in the 9th, but Barry Sammons struck out Thomas Kruyt to end the game.

Dodgers 4 - Orioles 3

Just like the previous day, L.A. took a 3-run lead in the 1st inning. A solo HR by Matt Praks in the 2nd made it 3-1. Then the O's scored 2 runs in the 5th to tie the score. Praks gave Baltimore the lead with another solo HR in the 6th, but L.A. tied it up in the 7th when pinch hitter George Clapper got an RBI single with 2 outs. In the 8th, reliever Barry Sammons walked three straight batters with one out. He got Kenneth Whitt to fly into the 2nd out but Matt Praks scored from 3rd on the sacrifice. David Lawrence advanced the runners on an infield single, but Pete Pugliese K's to end the threat. Sid Metcalf came in to pitch for the Orioles and quickly gave up a single. Abraham Noel followed with a double and Mark Silcox tried to score but was thrown out at home by strong armed CF Mike Maginnis. After another out, John Cirillo singled, moving Noel to 3rd. Pinch hitter Ed Impens Jr. grounded out to end the game and the series.

Dodgers 4 - Orioles 5

John Nolting was named World Series MVP. He went 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 9 K in 16 innings. But the deciding factor in giving him this award was the amazing fact that he hit .429 (3 for 7) with 5 RBI (2nd most on the team), 2 runs and a 1.143 OPS.

And now we move into a new era for TWB. The biggest change since the end of the war and the introduction of the "Live" era.

The Expansion Era!

Looks like Chris broke the website again.

Matt - when you get back home, might want to make sure you have a backup of everything... after what happened around here. :/
