May 1955 The Tigers went 19-9 in May to move into first, while the Yankees went 14-12 to lose 4 games in the standings. The Athletics have proven to be more than a pretender this season, going 19-8 and moving into 2nd place. Meanwhile, the Indians seem to have finally begun to realize their potential, going 18-8 in May and tying New York for 3rd. While those four teams are separated by just 3.5 games, 5th place Chicago is 14 games back which points to a growing rift between the top and bottom tier teams in the league. The Cubs keep rolling with a 17-12 record, increasing their lead to 3.5 games. Cincinnati went 15-11, which was good enough to move them into second place despite losing 2B Maurice Goza and backup 2B Bobby Grissom until mid-June. Goza suffered an elbow injury, while Grissom, who was just acquired from the Senators on May 1st, fractured his knee. Brooklyn continues to surprise their critics with a 3rd place record. The Pirates, who many believed would struggle this season, are tied with the Dodgers. The Phillies are in 5th, but they are just 4.5-games out. In The News May 29: In the 1st inning of a 6-4 win over the Orioles, KC's Charlton Brown hit the first major league home run over the outer wall in Kansas City, an estimated 500-foot clout. Three batters later, Emanuel Ryan nearly accomplished the same feat, but his 2-run blast came up just a few feet short. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Carpenter Erickson (NYA)! He had a record of 5-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.02 and 2 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Charlton Brown (KCA)! He batted .340 in 94 AB, with 10 homers and 37 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Martin Gwaltney (PIT)! He had a record of 6-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.13 and 1 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Abraham Noel (BKN)! He batted .442 in 95 AB, with 5 homers and 20 RBI. Code:

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor, I was reading your publication and noticed an error. You have Ron Fleischmann correctly listed third in the National League in strikeouts, however you show him as being a member of the New York Giants. Fleischmann was traded to the Phillies on May 1st of this season. I feel that this may be just another example of the press' indifference to the Phillies. A Phillies Fan |

If anyone's curious, over on the other boards, I started some threads in the history section so we can calculate and store ERA+ and OPS+ (and XR/27+ , which John prefers.)
I've started doing some of it. Turns out Will Haggan's case for the Hall just get's weaker with ERA+. Anyways, check it out, and since I don't particularely want to do these all myself, feel free to contribue. All I ask is that you know what you're doing when you calculate these things. You can find out how to do it over at BR.com. (OPS+ is a little more complicated than you may think.) Try not to fill those posts with stuff that isn't necessary (ie feel free to discuss those numbers, but in a different thread, please). Anyways, I was curious about these numbers, so there they are. I'll continue to add to them, and please PM me with any contributions of players you've done. Also, Matt, any chance of them getting stickied? I think we might need a whole separate forum for statistics though, since they don't really belong in the History one. Last edited by DamnYankees; 05-12-2005 at 06:14 AM. |

June 1955 With the top 4 teams in the AL staying in a tight group, anything can happen. The Tigers went 17-9, keeping them in 1st. The A's went 15-12 and slumped to 4th, but the Indians are surprising a lot of people. They went 18-10 and are now in 2nd place. The Indians are concerned about their pitching staff which ranks 10th in the majors with a 4.34 team ERA. "The Mad Bomber," Herman Labombard, leads the staff with a 13-4 record and a 2.85 ERA. Houston Boler (14-4, 4.18) has been inconsistent at times, but he has flashed some very positive signs. The biggest key has been a struggling Lex Tjeenk-Willink, who seemed to finally get on track with a 3-0 record and 1.56 ERA in 5 June starts. After finishing May in a surprising 5th place, the White Sox promptly went on a horrendous 18-game losing streak. It began with two extra inning losses to the A's on June 1st and 2nd. They were then swept by the Yankees, Indians, Senators, Yankees again and Tigers. After being shutout 5-0 against the Orioles on June 21st for their 18th loss, the Sox finally broke the streak with a 6-4 win against Baltimore thanks to two 3-run innings. Oddly enough, it was 40-year-old Johnny Gordley who got the big win. Yes, that's the same Gordley who has gone 39-74 over the past 3+ seasons. After losing the next two games, Chicago won two games against Boston and then swept Washington to finish the month a half-game out of last. The Cubs went 15-12 but remained in 1st in the NL. The Reds went 18-11 to gain some ground in the standings. Brooklyn went 15-11 and were in first place briefly this month. While the race in the NL looks just as tough (or possibly tougher) than the AL, no one seems to be taking control. The Reds are statistically the strongest team, but the Dodgers look surprisingly balanced. The Cubs' biggest worry has been the offense, which has been just above average so far. Cliff Wynne (.259, 8 HR, 39 RBI) and Emerson Meggs (.248, 7 HR, 34 RBI) need to step it up. In The News June 15th: After becoming the first player in history to strikeout 15 players in 9 or fewer innings on June 8th of last year, Washington's Lukas Dietrich did it again almost exactly a year later. This time, he struck out 15 Orioles in 8 innings while allowing 7 hits and 5 runs but just 1 walk. Despite the fireworks, he drew a 5-4 loss, dropping his record to 4-6 on the year. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Herman Labombard (CLE)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.82 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Wilford Woodworth (NYA)! He batted .389 in 90 AB, with 10 homers and 26 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Hank Makris (CIN)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.22. National League-Batter of the Month: Delmar Yordy (CIN)! He batted .336 in 116 AB, with 5 homers and 20 RBI. Code:

1955 All-Star Game
Municipal Stadium, Cleveland BOX SCORE The visiting National Leaguers jumped all over American League pitchers on this day. It started in the top of the 2nd when Giants SS Mike Fellner hit a 3-run homerun off AL starter Carpenter Erickson of the Yankees. Erickson was replaced by Kansas City's Jackie Bowen in the 3rd, but he allowed an RBI double by Cincinnati's Ted McMurray. The NL almost scored another run when Brooklyn's Mark Silcox singled, but McMurray was thrown out at home by Indians CF Rudel Dietrich, which got loud applause from the home fans. While AL pitchers were struggling, Pittsburgh's Martin Gwaltney allowed just 2 hits over 3 innings, which would eventually get him the win. The NL opened the flood gates with 3 more runs in the 5th. Then they added 2 more in the 7th, highlighted by a pinch hit homerun from Cubs 1B Bobby Johnson. The AL strung together three straight singles off Cubs pitcher Randy Liebermann to start the bottom of the 7th. The 3rd hit came off the bat of Cleveland 3B Dave Lemmings. That scored his Indians teammate, 1B Jerry Tuggle, for the AL's only run. Despite the lopsided score, that play drew plenty of cheers from Cleveland fans, as did the appearance of Indians pitchers Herman Labombard and Houston Boler. Boler pitched just 1/3rd of an inning while closing down the 7th, but Lombombard was torched for 3 runs in just 1/3rd of an inning in the 5th. A Cleveland sportswriter later wrote that the pitcher was "Labombarded." Code:

August 1955 With just 4 weeks left to play, the AL is no closer to determining a champion than they were back in April. The 3-time defending champion Tigers still lead the league, but the Yankees are giving them all they can handle. The Yanks briefly moved into first place in July and now they find themselves just a single game back. They could point to a 3-4 record against the Tigers in August to answer why they are still in 2nd. The two teams play their final series in Detroit from September 9th-11th. The Tigers will be without red-hot 3B Jim Coleman who has hit 11 HR in 114 AB since being called up from AAA Buffalo, where he hit 44 HR in just 77 games. Coleman has taken over 3B duties from Luther Ormiston, who has struggled all season long. Meanwhile, the Yankees lost Bourbon Allen Jr. (14-9, 2.31) on August 7th, but he should return on September 6th and may pitch in the big series. New York then lost all-star 2B John Valcarcel (.342, 19 HR, 89 RBI) for the remainder of the season with a ruptured bicep tendon. Doctors do not think he can be ready for the World Series if the Yanks do win the pennant. Meanwhile, both the A's and Indians refuse to go away in this race. The A's shocked the league by acquiring Pittsburgh ace Martin Gwaltney (20-4, 2.19) in a trade on July 16th. He went on to be named POTM while one key component of the trade for the Pirates, outfielder Matt Praks, was named POTW on July 31st. In addition to the 28-year-old Praks (.366, 19 HR, 85 RBI), Pittsburgh received 26-year-old pitcher Harvey Gaunt (8-9, 4.48), 1B prospect Henri Gallais (.270, 32 HR, 78 RBI at AAA) and former Pirates pitching prospect Shannon Richardson, who is just 22 years old and was previously traded to the A's in April of 1954. The trade appears to have helped both teams as the A's finished August on a 7-game winning streak, while the Pirates have played improved baseball over the past 6 weeks. The Cubs are beginning to run away with the NL pennant. At 89-44, they have the best record in the majors. They had an incredible 21-4 record in July. They opened August by being swept in a 4-game series in Pittsburgh, but they then went 21-4 over the rest of that month. This would be Chicago's first pennant since 1938, when well-known Cubs like HOF'ers David Wickersham, Punchy Cote and David McAuliffe along with Dan Troge, Dewey Mickelsen, Dave Arkless and Alex Winterhalter finally won the World Series after winning their 3rd straight pennant. That was also the next-to-last season Cookie Parrish would ever play before eventually succumbing to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 4 years later. Washington's Lukas Dietrich and Brooklyn's Joe Helton are both chasing the major league record of 263 K's set by David Wickersham in 1934. Both players lead their respective leagues, but Dietrich's bid for the record ended when he hurt his arm on August 24th. Meanwhile, Helton has 230 K's, and he should get 6 more starts to reach the 34 K's he needs to set a new record. At his current pace, he should finish the season with 271. In The News August 2: HOF pitcher Dave "The Shepard" McBean died at age 78. The cause of his death was heart failure, but his family said that he had suffered from diabetes for at least 10 years. McBean had a 254-151 record over 16 seasons, all with Washington. His 2.52 career ERA still ranks 8th best all-time. The Shepard was elected to the HOF in 1946 along with Dark Horse Allen and Mark Krosser as part of the first ever Veterans Committee vote. August 7: In a 14-2 win at Boston, Detroit's Ray Kress hit career HR #397 in the 1st inning off J.D. Allen to tie HOF'er Quenton Misisca for 2nd on the all-time list. Then in the 9th inning, he took over sole possession of 2nd place with a HR off reliever Cirilo Gonzalez. View the BOX SCORE here. August 11: New York 3B Wilford Woodworth tied the Yankees record with his 38th HR. The shot was a grand slam in the 3rd inning which gave New York a 4-3 lead over rival Detroit. He added another HR in the 5th inning to make the record his own, but the Yanks lost 8-7. By month's end, Woodworth had expanded his new team record to 44. He is now within reach of the AL record 48 HR's set by Detroit's Ray Kress in 1950. August 23: Baltimore's Alter Sennelnekoff threw the 56th no-hitter in major league history, and his joins the growing list of odd ones. In the game, he allowed 3 walks and one unearned run. That run came in the 4th inning when Chicago's Henry Thomas led off by reaching base on a throwing error by Baltimore 2B Kenneth Whitt. Sennelnekoff then walked the next two batters before recording the 1st out on a shallow fly. He then walked catcher Bud Mobley to force in the unearned run, but he got out of the inning with a line out and a ground out. Sennelnekoff did not allow another runner on the day. August 27: Wilford Woodworth wrote his name in the record books again. This time, he hit two 2-run HR's in a 5-3 win over the White Sox. When he hit the second HR, the two RBI gave him a new Yankees record with 122 on the season. That broke the team record of 121 RBI set in 1934 by the team's GM Jimmy Ditty. August 31: Ray Kress joined Oscar Vancini as the 2nd player in baseball history to hit 400 HR's in his career. The shot gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the 3rd inning against the Indians in Cleveland. Detroit went on to win 4-2. View the BOX SCORE here. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Carpenter Erickson (NYA)! He had a record of 4-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.46 and 2 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Arnie Stewart (NYA)! He batted .358 in 95 AB, with 12 homers and 31 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Ben Gardner (NYG)! He had a record of 5-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.35. National League-Batter of the Month: Delmar Yordy (CIN)! He batted .378 in 111 AB, with 6 homers and 30 RBI. Code:
