jsut that most of the team that was here last year is here this year. Ingram repalces Cafee so that's a plus. cook replaces Jones so that's another. I dont think it was the trade that locked the pennant, but it is the one that killed off the last hole.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES
April 1955 Both leagues got off to exciting starts as no team looks like a runaway this year. The Yankees stepped in front of the Tigers for a half-game lead at month's end. New York went 4-2 against the Tigers, which certainly helped their cause. If they continue to play that well against Detroit, they will surely be favored to win their first pennant since the greatest AL dynasty ended with the 1940 World Series. Bobby Johnson had a month to remember as he and the Cubs won the most games in the NL in April. The Phillies are in second as expected, but the big surprise so far has been the Dodgers. It's hard for anyone to remember the last time they were above .500. The two-time defending NL champion Cardinals got off to a horrendous start that had them below .300 before a sweep of the Pirates. In The News Apr 5: After a big civic parade, the Athletics opened their first season in Kansas City against the Indians. The Indians took a 5-2 lead after 7 innings, but in the bottom of the 8th, Peaches Badeau led off with a single off Cleveland starter Lex Tjeenk-Willink. Then speedy Hans Habermehl hit a 2-run homer to make the score 5-4. Bud Ayers singled between strikeouts of Charlton Brown and Hershel Lee. Then Matt Praks singled and Sal Poulos hit a pinch hit 3-run HR to put the A's on top 7-5. Closer Tom Lentz came in to pitch the 9th but he loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning thanks to two walks and a single. Indians catcher Pete Clarke hit a sac fly to make the score 7-6, but Lentz enduced a fly out and a ground out from pinch hitters Owen Shankster and Joseph Arp to end the game. At the end of April, the A's had a 8-4 home record. Apr 29: In a wild game in Baltimore, the Tigers destroyed the Orioles 19-1. In the game, Ray Kress became the first player in a year to hit for the cycle, collecting 5 total hits in the game. Matt Perly drove in 8 RBI, but that was not even a career high because he tied a major league record with 9 last season. Apr 30: Kansas City's Emanuel "Railroad" Ryan tied the same major league record that Perly did last year with 9 RBI in a game. This came in a 12-6 win at Washington. The 25-year-old Ryan has all of 416 career at-bats and 57 career RBI. His 9 RBI doubled his season total to 18. He had 35 in all of last season. American League-Pitcher of the Month: George Kauffman (NYA)! He had a record of 4-1 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 1.29 and 2 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Wilford Woodworth (NYA)! He batted .388 in 85 AB, with 12 homers and 31 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Adam Sardina (CHN)! He had a record of 5-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 1.94. National League-Batter of the Month: Bobby Johnson (CHN)! He batted .356 in 90 AB, with 11 homers and 27 RBI. Code:

Wait a second, I thought we went 4-2 vs NY, maybe I've read the box scores wrong. Too me it looked like we've beaten NY more than the rest of the AL combined.
EDIT: yup, verified: Andrew lost once to NY, Wolfe won one and lost one vs NY, Ulrich won 2 against NY, & Faunkner won 1 against NY Not that it matters, they lead and that's the bottom line. We're playing fairly well, they are just playing a bit better against the rest of the league. Still early in the season though. I have faith in my guys. Ulrich's 6-0 record wasn't enough for POM and neither was Mitchell's .400 for BOM... lot of Tiger haters out there already.

I dont know if anyone has noticed but Kress is doing something amazing yet again. Between April 29-30 Kress has reached base safely in 11 straight plate appearances and I dont even know if the two times he got on base April 28 were in the end of the beginning of the game, so the number could be 13 straight. Either way that is amazing.

Solo HR in his last PA in the game on the 28th. Flew out the time up before that. The BB was in the 1st. 12 in a row right now. John |

> jsut that most of the team that was
> here last year is here this year. Not quite... > Ingram repalces Cafee so that's a > plus. Going into last year, you had this as a rotation: 1) Makris coming off a big win, poor ERA year 2) Talent Tease Caffee 3) breaking in Peg 4) breaking in Conley That's *four* question marks. This year you had: 1) POY Ingram 2) Makris coming off a big win, good ERA year 3) Peg who finished strong in the 2nd half 4) Conley off a near ROY season You had two question marks - can Peg and Conley pitched like they flashed at their best in 1954. If the answer was "yes" to even one of those question, you would have a good top three in the rotation, and then would be looking to fill in the 4th spot. That's not a *bad* spot to be in when contending. It's not perfect, but not bad at all. Radical difference in the rotation from one year to the next. On the field, you didn't have Yordy, Hall or Cook, and Ralph Jones was a "if this rookie year a fluke" question mark. After he went out and did it again, the question on Ralph is sorta answered - yep, that's what he can do barring talent bumps or hits. It's not All Pro candidate level, but it is a bat you can bury down in the line-up that will give you decen Crosley power and BA, along with very good defense in the OF. This year the questions were more limited to: (i) how much would Goza drop (ii) will Cook get on enough to score runs while moving to a tougher park. The answer to (i) hasn't been promising, but you moved fast on it. Goza does still retain the great glove, so there is value there. Grissom has an even better glove, which is saying something. That they both got hurt at the same time, for the same length of time, is one of those bad breaks. The answer to (ii) is "yes" - he's on a 137 BB and 116 *run* pace despite hitting just .216. That's not bad at all. Of course he's on a 43 error pace, though he also is making a lot of plays over at 3B... but that's a lot of errors. It's not a major issue yet, and Cook tended to go hot & cold with the bat for the Cards over the years. The Reds obviously hope this is "Cold Cook" right now and that he heats up to the point that the overall numbers on the year for him are in that .750-.800 OPS range, and that it's driven by the OBP (i.e. getting on a ton). What happened to the AL single season loss record holder Ralph Benefield????
He went back into the bullpen. After embarassing himself last season, I felt it was time for him to go back to familiar territory. 1953: 24 relief appearances, 1-0, 2 saves, 3.90 era, 1.53 whip 1954: 39 starts, 5-29, 6.35 era, 1.74 whip 1955: 19 relief appearances, 2-4, 1 save, 3.91 era, 1.50 whip (as of 5/16) |
