August 1954 The Tigers rebounded to go 19-10 and they still lost a half-game to the Yankees. The Yankees won two of the first three games of their 4-game set that ends on September 1st, and they play three games in New York from September 16-18. The Yankees could have an edge in the final four weeks of the season because after their Sept 1 game at Detroit, they play 12 straight games against the worst three teams in the AL - Washington, Chicago and Baltimore. After playing that final series against Detroit, the Yanks close with three games against the Indians and A's. Meanwhile, Detroit plays 18 of their final 22 games against the best teams in the AL - Philly, Cleveland, Boston and New York. Detroit catcher John Degal became the third current Tiger to join the 40-homer club with a homerun on August 31st in the team's 4-3 11 inning loss to the Yanks. Teammate Matt Perly and A's first baseman Charlton Brown are just 2 homers from joining Degal. This would be the first time in history that three players hit 40 homeruns in a single season. And there could be more. Reds 1B Ted McMurray leads the NL with 35 HR, Yankees 1B Arnie Stewart has 33 HR and Ray Kress of Detroit has 30. In the NL, the Cardinals went 20-9 in August and have almost put the pennant out of reach. The Cubs were just 15-12 and are now 9 games back. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Bob Netsky (WSH)! He had a record of 6-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.41 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Ray Kress (DET)! He batted .418 in 98 AB, with 8 homers and 24 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Martin Gwaltney (PIT)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.65 and 1 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Ralph Jones (CIN)! He batted .352 in 105 AB, with 8 homers and 17 RBI. Code:

Netsky and Dietrich are two bright spots on a dark landcape of Senator misery.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES
September 1954 The Yankees had a much easier schedule in September, playing 12 straight games against the Senators, Orioles and White Sox. They won 7 of those first 9 games, but they lost 2 of 3 at Chicago before a huge series with the Tigers. They sat 3 games back, needing to win 2 or 3 games against Detroit. But the Tigers proved why they are still king of the AL hill, sweeping New York in Yankee Stadium. After losing the next day 1-0 to the red-hot A's, the Tigers beat Philly 4-3 in 10 innings on September 20th to clinch their 3rd straight AL pennant - the first team since the 1943-45 Red Sox to win 3 straight. For the first time in history, three players hit 40 homeruns in the same season. Interestingly enough, they were all in the same league too. Charlton Brown of the A's finished on top with 44 homers, while Tigers teammates Matt Perly and John Degal both hit 42. Perly added to his major league record RBI total, finishing with 162 on the year. Ray Kress broke his own major league record with 143 runs. Washington's Lukas Dietrich set a new AL record with 255 strikeouts, breaking Cotton Simson's record of 246 K's in 1950 with the Browns. New York's Carpenter Erickson also broke the record with 253 K's, but the final record belongs to Dietrich, who pitched on the final day of the season in hopes of breaking the major league record of 263. However, he had a rough outing, allowing 6 runs off 6 hits and 7 walks with just 2 K's in 4.1 innings. Cardinals pitcher Grady Ingram finished the season with 29 wins, while White Sox pitcher Ralph Benefield finished with 29 losses - one shy of the major league record. Speaking of record win and loss totals, after being swept in the final series of the season by Washington, the White Sox tied last season's Senators major league record with 108 losses. Meanwhile, Detroit won a franchise record 106 games (after winning 105 last year). At the same time, the Yankees won 100 games making this the first time ever that two teams won 100+ games in the same league during the same season. Code:
American League Standings Detroit 106 48 .688 - New York (A) 100 54 .649 6.0 Philadelphia (A) 85 69 .552 21.0 Boston 79 75 .513 27.0 Cleveland 74 80 .481 32.0 Baltimore 66 88 .429 40.0 Washington 60 94 .390 46.0 Chicago (A) 46 108 .299 60.0 National League Standings St. Louis 94 60 .610 - Cincinnati 86 68 .558 8.0 Chicago (N) 82 72 .532 12.0 Philadelphia (N) 77 77 .500 17.0 Pittsburgh 74 80 .481 20.0 New York (N) 71 83 .461 23.0 Milwaukee 67 87 .435 27.0 Brooklyn 65 89 .422 29.0 Detroit is a force to be reckoned with. After winning 105 games last year, they won 106 this year and held off a 100-win Yankees team to give them a chance to join the 1933-36 Yankees as the only teams to win 3 straight World Series. They face the Cardinals for the second straight year in the World Series, and again Detroit is favored to win. The Tigers offense has been incredible. Matt Perly and John Degal became the first pair of teammates EVER to hit 40 HR each in the same season. Then throw in another former 40-HR man in Ray Kress and you can imagine the power of this lineup. Kress won this year's AL batting title, making it his fourth title in five seasons. Detroit's pitching staff has had its issues this year, but it is still formidable. The Cardinals have the 5th best pitching staff in the major leagues, and they will have their hands full with Detroit. They are led by Grady Ingram, who nearly became the team's first 30-game winner since Hall of Famer Tim Lopresto won 31 in 1917. Their biggest weakness could be their offense, which scored just the 7th most runs in the majors. They have two hitters with 26 and 28 homeruns, but no one with 100 RBI. The big question is whether or not this offense can score enough to keep up with Detroit. But to St. Louis' credit, they have the NL batting champ in Rex Seelinger and one weapon the Tigers don't have - "Bullet" Ben Cook, who got on base at a .398 clip this year and stole 57 bases. My Prediction: The Cards lost 6 straight games in late September including a 4-game sweep at Chicago. On the other hand, Detroit finished strong against the best teams in the AL, including a confidence-boosting sweep of the Yankees. This should be a fun series, but Detroit has a big edge. I expect the Tigers to win in 6 games. Our first World Series Rematch in the Live Era. Hasn't happened since the Yankees and Dodgers went toe-to-toe in 1939 and 1940. It was the fourth time in seven years they met. In 1939 the Smith & Vancini Dodgers finally won their first title in seven games. In 1940, the Yanks swept the Dodgers for the last title of their 1931-40 Dynasty.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but I'm rooting for the Tigers. Call me evil, call me against the underdog...I just don't like the Cardinals.

I gotta hope Rollin' Fish nabs ring #3. It just adds to the credentials.
Plus, no one can stop that Detroit offense. I think Tigers get this in 5. |
