Neither Gibbons nor James threw enough innings to get credited with the win. In that case, generally the next pitcher into the game gets the W. A starting pitcher needs to throw 5 innings to get the win.

In order for the starting pitcher to get credit for a win, he must pitch a minimum of 5 complete innings. If he is pulled from the game prior to that, but is the pitcher of record, then the reliever who pitched the most should be awarded the win.
