The best feedback is to look at the successful teams in your league and see what they are doing. That's what I did for ideas for a 1625/cap tournament and I'm much happier with the team I constructed after the slapdash one I created just to get into that first tournament.

All of them play at Golden Level.

What would be the next step to improve?
What do you think about my team(s)?

Notes:
Never invested real money to buy PP.
Tried different strategies already, including buying packs only, trading/flipping cards, buying (non-)live cards only, favoring def/off, ...

Players that really improve my team right now cost at least 10k+.
A lot of PP for someone earning from achievements only.
So back to pulling packs instead of saving?

I am not so sure which way works best.

Get fast guys, Get some hammers... get some runs. Build pitching. Choice one team to be your baby. They get all. You need a Legend player for you for your team; like a captain..

Pick some park factors, jack them up to max, send the others to min, and structure your team around that. No better way to get an edge than by winning at home.
