Gil Coan (Washington Senators). His major leagues debut was on April 27, 1946 and that was the earliest date any of the surviving players played in a MLB game in 1946. With a total of 59 games played in 1946, Gil Coan also appeared in the most games of any living player who played in 1946 MLB games.

But there were a few (3) African-American players in the major leagues in the 19th century. Unfortunately, after their appearances, the disgraceful color barrier was established and maintained in the major leagues until Jackie Robinson came along to eliminate it permanently in 1947.

Jackie & Larry were Trailblazers, but don't forget Minnie's contribution

While Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby made monumental contributions towards integrating their respective leagues and being the first two Blacks in the major leagues, with Robinson being the first African-American in organized baseball in 1946, in my opinion, Minnie Minoso is not given enough credit for being "The Jackie Robinson Of The Caribbean and Latin America". Minoso was the first Black Latino to reach the major leagues (1949) and he was the first Black Latino to be chosen to play in a major league all-star game (1951). He wound up being selected to major league all-star teams for seven years, this after being a Negro Leagues all-star for two years. His success made it possible for Roberto Clemente to reach the major leagues in 1955 and it influenced many future generations of waves of "latinos of color" who have reached the major leagues since. If you break down the population of major league players in 2019 you will find about 30% or more of players are foreign-born and have come from the Caribbean and a majority of these Latinos either are what could be classified as Black Latinos or Latinos Of Mixed Races. Still Minoso, with excellent career numbers, even though his entry into major league baseball was delayed because the color barrier was still in place in his early 20s, has been shut out from his place in Cooperstown, a place which I believe he richly deserves. Hopefully, this will change some day and the earliest opportunity to elect him to the Baseball Hall Of Fame will come when he is a "Golden Days" (1950-1969) Era candidate in December 2020 for the BBHOF Class Of 2021. I fervently hope that his HOF candidacy will prove to be successful at that time.

Donnie Hill?

I'm trying to positively ID this c. 1983 Oakland Athletic... Donnie Hill is my best guess, but I don't have a whole lot of confidence in it. Any thoughts?

It is Hill.

Edited - It's not Hill. It's Bruce Bochte.

I'm pretty sure Cheech is right on this one. Note the chin dimple and ear structure.

Yeah, after looking at both guys, I think that's correct. Look at Pasqua's 1986 Fleer card. That was the clincher for me.

I stand corrected. It's not Hill, it's not Collins. It's definitely Bochte. The ears are the key identifier.

Thanks, Yaz & Pinetar.

Bagwell

I agree on the Astros ID above. Bagwell was a 3B in college and also spent a year or so in the minors at 3B.

Just found this excerpt: According to Bagwell, his tenure as a collegiate shortstop lasted one game. "I hit for the cycle and hit another home run, and I made two errors at short," he recalled. "The next day I was playing third." Bagwell played third base from then on until his first spring training with the Astros in 1991, when he made the switch across the diamond.

Antonio Bastardo (MLB Career: 2009-2017).

No Inglorious Bastard was he, in fact Antonio had a pretty good, if short career as a lefty MLB reliever for nearly a decade., Antonio spent his first six years of a nine year MLB career, with the Phillies. he later made stops with the Pirates and the Mets. While not an all-star, he had a pretty solid career. On the minus side, his career was a bit short, at about 8 1/2 years of MLB service time, with him burning himself out and throwing his last MLB pitch a little bit shy of his 32nd birthday. Some career highlights include Antonio going 6-1 with a 2.64 earned run average and a 0.93 WHIP for the NL East division-winning Phillies of 2011. He also went 3-2 with a 2.32 earned run average for the Phillies in 2013. In 2015 Bastardo went 4-1, with a 2.98 earned run average for Pittsburgh. With the Mets and the Pirates in 2016 Bastardo went 3-0. Bastardo also had a couple of rough years, which accounts for his earned run average rising to a final career mark of 4.01.
Overall Bastardo was 27-20, going 20-18 as a Phillie: 7-2 as a Pirate and 0-0 with the Mets. He was a good middle reliever, who could be called upon to fill the Closer role in a pinch. (12 Saves Overall, 11 Saves with the Phillies).
Bastardo pitched in 419 MLB games and had 93 Games Finished.
