Jets 2015/2016 Video Series

I am also watching your YouTube video series for the Modern Winnipeg Jets. I watched the first 2 videos and started the 3rd video. I noticed that you simmed ahead almost a year between the 2nd and 3rd videos.

You skipped over the trading deadline and draft among other things. This video series would be much more helpful and beneficial to new players if each video picked up where the last one left off. It is really difficult to learn the game when you skip over important events in the game, and don't discuss how to handle these things.

I have started my own Modern Jets game and have a few questions:

1. I attempted to make trades on Feb. 29th, however, I kept getting a response from the other teams that said something like "the cap floor will be exceeded please add more salary". What does this mean and how do I avoid this? I tried to add cash to the deal but was unable to enter any cash.

2. I added some players to my Shortlist and I would like my scouts to check them out. The shortlisted players had a scouting level of E. How do I get my scouts to scout these players? I right clicked on each player and I see an option to assign scout, however, the list of scouts never shows up when I click on "assign scout".

3. Is there a game manual? If so, where is it located?

4. What do the letters next to a players name mean? For example (A) or (P).. I know that (TB) is Trading Block.

I'm glad you're gaining knowledge from our video series. That's what it is there for. The video series is a learning experience for both us and our viewers. It's something new. The early videos are a little more over the place. We skipped (or rather, I continued to play the game) not on video because there's not always something interesting to show. The Jets were not having a great season.

In hindsight, I should have done the draft and off season, but I we've completed that cycle in the Historical Mode campaign and current Jets campaign we're quickly approaching it again. As I've always stated, if there's something you want to see us cover or talk about, please let me know here on the forums, comment on the video, or hit me up on Facebook or Twitter.

To answer your questions however;

(1) It's not about Cash. Like most North American Sport Leagues (except for Baseball), there is a Salary Cap system in place. Your team is expected to have a payroll of a base amount and cannot exceed another amount. These are listed in either the Finance page, or you can see it easiest on the Roster Screen right at the bottom. The message you're getting is simple: The trade won't work because you're not taking enough Salary back.

Example:
Team A - Is 3 million below the limit
Team B - Is 15 million below the limit

Team A and B make a trade. Team B trades a player (making 5 years/25 million contract / AAV 5 million) to Team A for a 3rd Round Pick.

The trade will not go through because Team A can't exceed the Cap limit by 2 million dollars.

So to modify the trade:

Team B still trades said player to Team A, gets a 3rd Round Pick, and takes on Player Z (whose on a 3 year 9 million dollar / AAV 3 million) contract.

In Hockey (and other salaried sports) you'll hear the concept of "Dumping" salary.

Scouting is discussed more in the Manual (we'll get to that in a minute), but it's not so much about Scouting 1 specific player. Rather, Scouts go by Region, or you can assign a Scout to look say specifically at your Shortlist. If you have Scouts Scouting for potential, that E will eventually drop, but Scouting is most important at the end of the year, in case Ratings change, specifically for the higher ranking people. If there is a few players in particular you want to keep an eye on, keep them on your Shortlist and simply assign the Scout to scout your shortlist near the end of the season. You can hire extra ones under the Personnel Tab.

The Game does have a Manual, it just does not as good of job as it could of letting you know it's there. This blog should fill in both of these questions: Getting to Know Franchise Hockey Manager 2

Adam, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. If you have time, please answer Question Number 4. Also what do the different colors signify for player names?

I looked through the Manual but could not find this information.

I should have been more clear, that's addressed in the piece I linked.

Quote:
When someone is listed with a (C) or an (A), it means the they are currently the team’s Captain and Assistant Captains. By right-clicking on their names, you can add or remove those designations to anyone on the team. An (F) means the player is a Foreigner, and can help you keep track of how many you can have on your team. The letters (OA) indicates Over-Age, meaning the player is now technically over the age limit for the league, but each team is allowed to up to 3 players who can have this designation. This is often used to help someone develop their talents further/give the team the extra bump they need to have a chance to win the league.

Last but not least, we have two designations that you will see in any league. The first, (P) stands for protected – meaning the player can be sent down without fear of another team picking him up. The last designation, (TB) you will only see on other teams roster. TB indicates who is on that team’s trade block.

Just note, some of these designations will only show up in Certain leagues, because they don't matter in others.

As for the Colors, I'm assuming you're talking on the Depth Charts? That indicates what level they are at, NHL, AHL, or minor leagues (such as NCAA, WHL, OHL, etc)
