The San Diego Padres are in Portland to finish up our season series with a 2 game set. They were swept at home in 3 games by Seattle over the weekend and have lost 7 of their last 8 games, including 2 losses to us in as many days in San Diego. We are 12-4 against them on the season. The last time they were in the Skydome, we split a pair of games with only 5 totals runs being scored by both teams. The Padres are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 3.80 runs per game (Portland is up to 7th with 4.04!). They are tied for 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.83 per game (Portland is still #1 at 3.37, but it keeps getting higher). We lead the League in shutouts (15), but have not had one in over a month. San Diego is 2nd with 12, 8 of those by Mike Nackley (27-L).

San Diego Padres (68-75 .476 18 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (86-57 .601 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Don Polcha (28-R 8-11 4.11) vs. POR: Johnny Maskell (24-R 3-7 4.10) Rookie

We have faced Polcha 3 times, beating him every time and scoring a nice amount of runs each outing. So, that means he will be stingy today...

Maskell is 0-4 in his last 6 starts with a 4.98 ERA.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 73 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Attendance: 18,154

Top of the First:
Hal Baumgardner flies out to center. Ernesto Najarro grounds out to 2nd. Roger Rojas fouls out to 1st! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth grounds an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. Dennis Webb pops out to short. Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to left. Ainsworth steals 3rd, but Schottler stays put at 1st. Randy James drives one over the center fielder's head for a double and both runners score! 2 to 0, Beavers! Man, you talk about hot! The reigning PCL Player of the Week and 15 straight games with a hit! 17 RBI in is last 5 games plus this inning! Jeff Austin lines out to center for the 2nd out. Dave Lesley grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Second:

Mike Fahy hits a 2 out double and Lee Dukes singles him home. 2 to 1, Beavers. Rance Haynes then homers to right.... 3 to 2, Padres. Johnny Maskell has now allowed 14 HR in 91.2 IP....

Bottom of the Third:
With 1 out Dennis Webb singles and then Jeff Schottler sticks one on the right center field wall for a double. Randy James flies out to right, but Webb holds to 3rd like a scaredy-cat... Jeff Austin flies out to center.

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Hal Baumgardner walks and then Ernesto Najarro homers to right center... 5 to 2, Padres.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Randy James leads off with a walk and Jeff Austin singles him to 3rd. Dave Lesley loops a hit into center and James scores. 5 to 3, Padres. Woody Griesbach grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and Austins goes to 3rd... Just when I was starting to like him again... Gary Long (32-R) goes up to hit for Eddie Thomas, but he grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). He gives up an lead off double to Lee Dukes and calls the trainer out.... New Pitcher: Brian Hagans (25-R), just back from Vancouver (AAA). He gets a ground out and then walks PH Otis Smith (33-L) intentionally so that there can be an extra RBI for Hal Baumgardner when he homers to left... 8 to 3, Padres and I start packing up my things...

Bottom of the Ninth:
The only notable thing that happened is that, down 5 runs and no one one base, PH Howard McNeal (30-R) swings at a 3-0 pitch.... I was not paying attention, but Christy the PA kindly pointed it out to me so that I could share in the joy of the moment.... McNeal grounded out to 2nd...

Lost - 8 to 3

We had 10 hits and made no errors
San Diego had 9 hits and made no errors

Johnny Maskell (L 3-8) went 5 innings, allowed 5 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks and struck out 2.
RHP Barry Chapman went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 1.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 1+ inning, allowed 1 run and 2 hits.
RHP Brian Hagans, who was recalled from Vancouver (AAA) specifically because the old man Curt Riley (35-R) was giving up home runs and Hagans had not allowed one in 59.2 IP for the Mounties, went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs, 1 hit, a home run and walked 1 (INT).

Don Polcha (W 9-11) went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs, 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

C Dennis Webb had 3 hits with a double, but no runs or RBI. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B Randy James had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBI.

For the Padres, CF Hal Baumgardner had 2 hits with his 7th home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. C Lee Dukes had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Pepe's report on Lou Hertzberg is not too bad. He'll have a stiff back for about a week, but can probably pitch with it.

San Diego Padres (69-75 .479 17 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (86-58 .597 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Javier Reyna (32-R 10-12 3.17) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 14-11 3.21)

Reyna is 2-1 against us with a shutout. The game he lost, he only gave us 2 runs in 8 IP. He has a 1.08 ERA against us.

After enduring a 6 game losing streak, Wolf has won his last 2 starts, allowing only 3 runs total in the 2 games.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
SAN DIEGO
1: RF Ernesto Najarro (22-L .279-365-9-31-.761) Rookie
2: LF Mark Saylor (24-S .183-180-6-18-.602) Rookie Trade from Hou 6/9

7: SS Rance Haynes (34-R .233-429-14-52-.664)
8: C Terry Bell (26-R .191-68-1-6-.547) Rookie
9: P Javier Reyna (32-R .136-59-0-1-.271)

PORTLAND
1: LF Gordon Saunderson (26-L .270-122-0-12-.641) Rookie
2: C Dennis Webb (25-L .272-283-0-20-.663)
3: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .305-535-8-55-.795)
4: 2B Jeff Austin (29-R .238-500-13-63-.672)

6: 3B Dave Lesley (26-R .259-332-4-41-.677)
7: 1B Joe Harrison (35-R .186-59-2-6-.584)
8: SS Eddie Thomas (25-R .225-240-2-29-.570) Rookie
9: P Ron Wolf (27-R .138-65-0-1-.323)

We have a lot of guys looking droopy today, since we have not had a day off in a while and another is not coming soon, so we have to cobble together a pretty unpretty lineup, which includes Jeff Austin playing his first game of the season at second base, where he was the starter last year, but is a less than pristine defender.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 79 F, Clear Skies, with a 13 MPH wind blowing right to left.
Attendance: 19,931

Top of the First:
"The NeverEnding Story of the Calamity of the First Inning" Starring Ron Wolf continues... Ernesto Najarro doubles to left center. Mark Saylor lines out to deep left and Najarro tags up and makes it to 3rd. Roger Rojas grounds out to 2nd and Najarro scores. 1 to 0, Padres. David Shropshire grounds out to 2nd. Well, we gave up a run, but at least Jeff Austin made 2 plays at 2nd without incident.

Bottom of the First:
Gordon Saunderson grounds out to 2nd. As a pinch-hitter, he is batting .333; as a starter, .194.... Dennis Webb grounds out to 2nd. Dale Ainsworth grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Third:
Joe Harrison leads off with a hit, steals 2nd, goes to 3rd on a ground out and scores on a 2 out single by Gordon Saunderson! Tie game: 1 all. Saunderson steals 2nd and Dennis Webb hits another double! 2 to 1, Beavers! He has 5 doubles in 28 AB in September! Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit up the middle and Webb heads home....He beats the throw and Ainsworth moves up to 2nd! 3 to 1, Beavers! We have tied the number of runs we got off P Javier Reyna in his first 3 starts against us combined! Jeff Austin doubles to left! 4 to 1, Beavers! Woody Griesbach flies out to right to end the inning.

Top of the Fifth:
Mike Fahy leads off with a double to center, but P Ron Wolf gets the next two outs without incident and the pitcher is up, so I am think we are out of trouble, but P Javier Reyna singles to left. Fahy stops at 3rd, so we get another chance, but Ernesto Najarro singles and Fahy scores. 4 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Seventh:

With 2 outs, PH Pedro de Jesus (25-L) doubles to left. Ernesto Najarro follows with a run scoring single to center. 4 to 3, Beavers.

Top of the Eighth:
With 2 outs, Ernie McGuire reaches on an error by 3B Dave Lesley. Wolf is due to lead off the next inning, and we do not have the fielders to make a double switch that will be beneficial, so we give him one more batter to get out of the inning. Mike Fahy lines a hit to center. PH Otis Smith (33-L) is announced. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (29-L) and his aching back. Smith flies out to left!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Antoine Redd (31-R), who has been stinky of late, but he is the freshest arm we have. PH Butch Nelson (25-R) swings at the first offering and flies out to deep right. PH Hal Baumgardner (26-R), who hit a home run yesterday as a starter, strikes out! 2 down. Ernesto Najarro, who is 3 for 3 today, swings at the first pitch and is now 4 for 4 with a single up the middle... Redd balks... Mark Saylor, who is not hitting his weight (.179 to 180 lbs), works the count full and then takes strike three and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 4 to 3

We officially eliminate the Padres from the pennant race with this win.

We had 5 hits and made 1 error
San Diego had 10 hits and made no errors

Ron Wolf (W 15-11) went 7.2 innings, allowed 3 runs, 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. 120 pitches.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (H 7) faced 1 batter and retired him
RHP Antoine Redd (SV 12) pitched a scoreless 9th, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Javier Reyna (L 10-13) went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, no walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit.

C Dennis Webb hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Jeff Austin hit a double and had an RBI and did not make a bad play at 2nd.

For the Padres, RF Ernesto Najarro went 4 for 4 with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBI.

We are done with the Padres for this year. We won the season series, 13-5, including going 3-1 against the best pitcher in Baseball, Mike Nackley (27-L)!

Wednesday, September 12, Year I

We can clinch the Division Championship today if we win and Los Angeles loses.

The San Francisco Seals are in Portland to finish up our season series and the current home stand with a 2 game set. They just split two games in Seattle and have lost 6 of their last 7, including 2 losses to us in as many days in San Francisco, including an epic 19 inning affair we won, 11 to 10, that featured 50 hits by the two teams. We are 9-7 against them on the season. The last time they were in the Skydome, they beat us 3 of 4 games, outscoring us, 20 to 10, for the series. The Seals are 8th in the PCL in scoring with 4.01 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 4.03, 4 runs more than SF). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.08 per game (Portland is still #1 at 3.40, but it is still getting higher).

San Francisco Seals (71-74 .490 16 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (87-58 .600 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SF: Jose Troche (26-L 9-7 2.86) vs. POR: Terry Melton (26-R 11-3 2.16)

We have scored 1 total run off Troche in the 3 starts he has had against us...

Melton is making his 2nd start since returning from the Disabled List. Let's hope 1) that he does not return to the Disabled List today and 2) that a little more of the rust from his layoff is gone.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
SAN FRANCISCO
1: SS Javy Vasquez (22-R .202-277-2-24-.599) Rookie #3 prospect
2: 3B Chris Greenwald (28-S .261-579-20-76-.716)
3: LF Gary Halbert (28-R .255-525-20-76-.790)
4: CF Ron Chestnut (31-L .247-530-14-58-.745)
5: RF Dave DiMeglio (28-L .283-191-2-16-.694)
6: 2B Clint Graham (29-R .273-439-8-42-.768)
7: C Chip Carpenter (29-R .224-407-12-48-.669)
8: 1B Leon Vosters (33-R .317-104-5-17-.912)
9: P Jose Troche (26-L .273-44-0-6-.614)

Vosters is the only player in the lineup with a hit off Melton. He is 1 for 1. No one has more than 2 at bats, though.

PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .305-538-8-56-.794)
2: LF Howard McNeal (30-R .252-313-7-33-.696)
3: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .262-427-10-45-.731) Rookie
4: 3B Randy James (33-R .282-454-16-77-.800) Today is his Birthday
5: 2B Gary Long (32-R .265-529-8-51-.688)
6: SS Dave Lesley (26-R .257-335-4-41-.671)
7: 1B Jeff Austin (29-R .239-503-13-64-.674)
8: C Dave Benya (26-S .218-101-0-6-.539)
9: P Terry Melton (26-R .208-48-0-1-.516)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 74 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing left to right.
Attendance: 20,697

Top of the First:
Javy Vasquez grounds out to 2nd. Chris Greenwald flies out to deep right. Gary Halbert takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4, a rare walk by P Terry Melton. Halbert steals 2nd. Ron Chestnut nubs one in front of the plate and C Dave Benya throws him out at 1st!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth grounds out to 3rd. Howard McNeal swings at the first pitch he sees and homers to left center!!! 1 to 0, Beavers! We have doubled the runs we have score off Jose Troche in his lifetime!! Jeff Schottler strikes out looking... Randy James swings at the first pitch, just like Howard McNeal did, but does not hit it like Howard McNeal did....he grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the Second:

With 1 out, Dave Lesley doubles to left, but then gets doubled off base when Jeff Austin flies out to center...

After that nothing much happens for a while....

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth doubles. They intentionally walk Howard McNeal and Jeff Schottler singles to load the bases up. Randy James, our hottest hitter is up, and he watches strike three go by... Gary Long flies out to center.

Top of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Melton issues another walk, this one to Leon Vosters. PH Mike King (31-L), the Gloveless Hit Machine, doubles to center. PH Dennis Williamson (32-L) lines a hit to left and a run scores to tie the game at 1. Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (26-R). Chris Greenwald lines out to right and Dale Ainsworth throws to 3rd to double off King and end the inning!!!!

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Rich Kinney (33-R). 2.09 ERA. Dave Lesley grounds one to short, but new SS Domingo Santay boots it! Jeff Austin bunts Lesley to 2nd. PH Glenn Pearce (39-R) is sent up. He grounds out to 2nd and Lesley moves over to 3rd. 2 outs. PH Dennis Webb (25-L) flies out to right....

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). He walks the lead off man, Gary Halbert... Ron Chestnut swings at a 3-1 pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Dave DiMeglio grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!!!

Bottom of the Eighth:
We go down 1-2-3 on 3 ground balls...

Top of the Ninth:
With 2 outs, PH Marcos Barron grounds a hit to left, but Domingo Santay lines out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Randy James leads off and his 15 game hitting streak has not yet been extended and is in jeopardy. He lines a 2-2 pitch to left for a hit! Pinch-runner: Eddie Thomas (25-R). Gary Long grounds into a 6-4-3 double play... Dave Lesley doubles to left... Why did not Gary Long bunt the runner to 2nd like everyone else always does in that type of situation?... Jeff Austin flies out to center.

Extras!

Not another 19 inning one, please!

Top of the Tenth:
Eddie Thomas stays in to play short and Dave Lesley moves over to 3rd. They go down 1-2-3!!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (28-L), their closer. Leads the league in Saves, but has an ERA of 4.12. He was much better than that when he was a Beaver. He has 3 saves and 2 losses against us on the season, but he pitched 5 shutout innings in that 19 inning game. He has only allowed 1 run in his last 10.1 IP. PH Joe Harrison (35-R) leads us off and strikes out. Dennis Webb next and he cannot hit lefties, but there is no one on the bench who can, except Woody Griesbach and he needs this day off for health reasons. Webb bloops a hit to center!! Dale Ainsworth flies out to center and then Webb gets picked off at first...

Top of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Antoine Redd (31-R). Ron Chestnut doubles to right center.... Redd will not be a Beaver next season... We walk Dave DiMeglio intentionally. Clint Graham grounds a hit up the middle and Chestnut scores. 2 to 1, Seals. Chip Carpenter walks to load the bases up. Marcos Barron strikes out and we finally get an out... Domingo Santay grounds into a force at home, 3-2. They let P Jesse Adcock bat. That is a lot of confidence in a guy with an ERA over 4.... They have hitters and pitchers left to use. If Redd does not get Adcock out, I will cut his butt right now... Adcock grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the Eleventh:

Let's make them pay for their arrogance, please! We do not...we go down 1-2-3...

Lost - 2 to 1 in 11 innings

We had 8 hits and made no errors
San Francisco had 9 hits and made 1 error

Terry Melton went 6.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.

Jose Troche went 6 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 6.
Jesse Adcock (W 6-9) went 2 scoreless innings, gave us 1 hit (but picked him off) and struck out 2.

Top of the First:
Billy Anson grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Gary Halbert lines out to center. Chris Greenwald lines out to right! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit up the middle. Dennis Webb flies out to right. Ainsworth gets caught stealing. Jeff Schottler lines out to left.

Top of the Second:
Marcos Barron loops a hit to left and Ron Chestnut walks. Clint Graham grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Barron is on 3rd and Martin uncorks a wild pitch... 1 to 0, Seals.

Bottom of the Second:
3 hitters, 3 full counts, 3 outs...

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Dennis Webb hits yet another double and Jeff Schottler singles. Randy James takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up. Gary Long grounds into a 6-4-3 double play....

Top of the Fifth:
Clint Graham grounds a hit to center. With 1out, John Ross doubles to center and Graham scores. 2 to 0, Seals. With 2 outs, Billy Anson grounds a hit to right and Ross scores. 3 to 0, Seals.

Top of the Sixth:

Chris Greenwald leads off with a single. Then CF Jeff Schottler hurts himself making a diving catch.... Now we have no center fielders with Perry Templet already hurt... Woody Griesbach moves over to center and Howard McNeal goes in to play left. Ron Chestnut doubles to right. Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (26-R). Clint Graham grounds out to short and Greenwald scores. 4 to 0, Seals. Javy Vasquez strikes out to end the inning.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Gus Hanauer (28-R), the loser of that 19 inning game, but he is coming in fresh today. Dennis Webb leads off by lining a hit to center. No bunt... Howard McNeal strikes out... and we get nothing...

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Brian Hagans (25-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work. The first was not pretty, but he did not give up a run. The first pitch he threw in the game beaned a batter.... Javy Vasquez homers to right... 5 to 3, Seals... Vasquez is a .200 hitter and that is his 3rd home run of the season in 284 AB.... Hagans was brought in because he would not give up home runs...

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (28-L)... you should know about him by now... Jesse Austin leads off with a hit and with 1 out, Dave Lesley singles to put the tying run on base. PH Joe Harrison (35-R) grounds into a 6-4-3 double play....

Lost - 5 to 3

We had 11 hits and made no errors
San Francisco had 9 hits and made no errors

Frank Martin (L 15-10) went 5.1 innings, allowed 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. He threw a WP
RHP Don Schmidt went 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out 1.
RHP Brian Hagans went 2 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 HB and struck out 1.

Brad Simpson (W 11-12) went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5.
LHP Joe Adcock (SV 36) pitched a scoreless 9th, gave us 2 hits and struck out 1.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. C Dennis Webb had 2 hits with a double. 3B Randy James went 0 for 3, ending his hitting streak at 16 games. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits and scored a run. LF/CF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. PH Gordon Saunderson had a SF. SS Dave Lesley had a hit in his only AB. PH Glenn Pearce had a hit. PR Phil Parker stole a base.

Pepe's report on Jeff Schottler is a bruised toe...a bruised toe! And he had to come out? "Well, he thought he broke it, Boss, but he'll be fine in a day or two."

We are done with the Seals for this year. After getting swept these two games, we end up tied for the season series, 9-9.

Third time is the charm, maybe, in trying to clinch the division title. But we cannot do it with just a win today; we also need San Francisco to lose.

I want to send Brian Hagans (25-R) back to Vancouver (AAA) and bring the old man back, Curt Riley (35-R), but I cannot until Riley has been in AAA for 10 days. That won't be until the 18th.... Editor's Note: That is a Major League rule that is not enforced in OOTP, but I enforce it upon myself. You can only recall a player within those 10 days if you put someone from the active roster onto the Disabled List. Without this rule, you could just use your minor leagues as a bench for your starting pitchers and relievers who you know are not going to be able to pitch and call up fresh arms all the time.

We are in Oakland to begin our final road trip of the season and to finish up our season series with the Oaks with 3 games over the weekend. Oakland just lost 2 games to San Diego here and lost 2 of 3 to us in Portland last weekend. We are 10-5 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the last time we were in the Coliseum, back in those glory days of June. The Oaks are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.04 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 4.01). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.42 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.40).

Portland Beavers (87-60 .592 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (68-80 .459 19.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Lonny Tomski (27-R 2-2 3.96) Rookie vs. OAK: Leo Broyles (27-R 8-8 3.75) Rookie

Broyles is 2-1 against us. He pitched 2 great games against us and one where he had to leave early due to injury, but we beat him last weekend in Portland, scoring 6 runs in 4 innings.

Tomski, after failing to win in his first 7 starts, has won his last 2. Of course, we scored 9 runs for him in each of those wins, too, but he pitched well. And after giving up 7 HR is his first 34 IP, he has allowed none in the last 16.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: CF Woody Griesbach (23-R .290-31-0-3-.785) Rookie

8: C Paul Lyons (33-R .243-70-1-9-.627) Rookie
9: P Leo Broyles (27-R .212-33-0-2-.455) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Oakland Coliseum
Weather: 62 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 14 MPH wind blowing out to right.
Attendance: 22,011

That wind mind be hazardous to Lonny Tomski's health....

Top of the First:
Woody Griesbach grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Dennis Webb grounds out to the pitcher. Dennis Ainsworth lines out to deep center.

Bottom of the First:

Henry Rangel grounds out to 2nd. Roger Crandall pops out to 2nd. Dave Russell walks on 4 pitches. Neil Rivers strikes out!!

Through 3 innings, we are being outhit, 1 to 0. We did get a pair of runners on base via errors...

Top of the Fourth:
Dale Ainsworth leads off with a walk and goes to 3rd on our first hit of the game, a single to right by Randy James. Gary Long, who is only good for grounding into double plays lately, does what he does best, 6-4-3, but Ainsworth scores. 1 to 0, Beavers.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Lonny Tomski drills Antonio Mata with a fastball to lead off the inning, and immediately my respect for him grows. Well, grows is not quite the right word. Faintly semi-appears from nothingness is more accurate. With 2 outs, P Leo Broyles grounds a hit to right and Mata beats the throw to 3rd. Henry Rangel, who categorically refuses to accept free passes, accepts one from Lonny Tomski to load the bases up. It is only Rangel's 15th non-intentional walk of the season. He has accumulated 557 AB. Roger Crandall pops out to 2nd!!!

Through seven innings, we are being outhit, 3 to 1, but still lead on the scoreboard, 1 to 0.

Top of the Eighth:
P Lonny Tomski leads off and makes a good bid for a hit with a line drive to right, but is is caught. No one else makes a much of a bid at all and we go down in order.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Lonny Tomski enters the frame with 75 pitches under his belt. PH Farley Ross (35-L) grounds out to 2nd, but Henry Rangel lines a hit to center. Roger Crandall grounds a hit to center and Rangel heads for 3rd, but Woody Griesbach throws him out! 2 down! Dave Russell grounds another hit to center and Crandall makes it to 3rd. Neil Rivers hits a lazy fly to left to end the inning!

Top of the Ninth:
Let's..Get..Some..Runs! New Pitcher: Phil Land (34-R), who is a tough customer. 2.83 ERA and not many hits or walks. WHIP of 1.04. He strikes out Dale Ainsworth, that's how tough a customer he is.... Only the 45th SO for Dale. With 2 outs, Gary Long sneaks a slow grounder through the left side for a hit, but Jeff Austin strikes out.

Bottom of the Ninth:

Is 1 run enough, Mr. Tomski?

"Yes, sir. That is plenty, thanks."

With 2 outs and nobody on, Lonny Tomski strikes out PH Norm Wynne (25-R) and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Won - 1 to 0

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! mmmm... HA! HA! HA!..oh! HO!

We had 2 hits and made no errors
Oakland had 6 hits and made 2 errors

Lonny Tomski (W 3-2) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 hits, 2 walks, 1 HB and struck out 2. 100 pitches on the nose.

Leo Broyles (L 8-9) went 7.1 innings, gave us 1 run, 1 hit, 3 walks and struck out 5. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.

RF Dale Ainsworth drew 2 walks, stole a base and scored our run. 3B Randy James and 2B Gary Long had our hits. James also had a walk. Long got our run in, but got no RBI because he grounded into a double play.

Fun Fact: Norm Wynne, who struck out to end the game and was only the second strikeout victim of Lonny's, was pinch-hitting for Avery Shular who had 2 hits off Tomski. All 6 knocks Tomski gave up were singles, as were our 2 hits.

Funner Fact: San Francisco lost, so we are officially the Champions of the PCL Western Division!!!

E-2. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 2nd and McNeal scores. 1 to 0, Beavers. Full count to Randy James and he takes ball 4. Jeff Austin grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Third:
Carlos Rodriguez strikes out the side, 1-2-3...

Bottom of the Third:
John Ross leads off with a double to center. With 2 outs, Norm Wynne singles him home to tie the game at 1 all. Wynne tries to steal, but runs into a pitchout again to end the inning.

Well, I thought this wold be a high-scoring game, but here we are after four, still tied at 1, with 3 total hits between the two teams.

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Woody Griesbach swings at the first pitch and lines a home run over the left field fence! 2 to 1, Beavers! With 2 outs, Randy James draws a walk, the 6th issued by Carlos Rodriguez, and Jeff Austin follows with a belt to right for a home run!! 4 to 1, Beavers!!

Top of the Seventh:

The PCL West stinks.....we are the laughing stock of baseball.

What would have happened if I had not come along and made the Beavers a decent team? The winner in the division would have had like 82 wins.....

The Beavers are NOT a 95 win team, they just got to play against a lot of crappy division rivals....

That's good, that's a really good approach. Gives them other teams a false sense of security!

Portland Beavers (89-60 .597 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (68-82 .453 21.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 15-11 3.22) vs. OAK: Bart Poulin (23-L 1-0 5.64) Rookie

Poulin was claimed off waivers from Los Angeles. He began the season injured. He has made 5 starts and despite his 5.64 ERA, the Oaks are 4-1 in those games.

After a 6 game losing streak, Wolf has won his last 3 starts. The last time he faced Oakland he pitched a 3 hit shutout.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)

9: P Bart Poulin (23-L .444-9-0-3-1.000) Rookie

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Oakland Coliseum
Weather: 71 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 12 MPH wind blowing out to center.
Attendance: 23,634

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth walks on 4 pitches. Woody Griesbach grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. He steals his first base as a Major Leaguer. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 3rd and Griesbach moves over to 2nd. 2 outs. Randy James takes 4 wide ones. Gary Long clears the bases with a double to left! 2 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the First:
Okay, here we go with another First Inning for Ron Wolf... I am not even going to watch this one; I am letting Christy the PA write up the the inning...

Norm Wynne hits a ball to toward third base that bounces twice before Randy James gracefully catches it in his fielder's glove and then he makes a very strong throw to first base. Henry Rangel taps the ball gently back to Ron Wolf, who flashes that sweet smile of his as he picks up the ball and throws it to first base also. Roger Crandall hits a gentle fly ball to Dale Ainsworth in right who makes the catch without much effort, it looks like. I believe that is the third out, because the players are leaving the field. Ron Wolf is grinning from ear to ear as he walks to the dugout. All the other players are jogging, but he is walking. Why is that?

Thanks, Christy. 1-2-3!!! Now I will have to let her write up Wolf's first inning every game...

Top of the Second:
Jeff Austin leads off with a grounder to left for a hit and Dave Benya follows with his first home run of the season, a line drive to left! 4 to 0, Beavers! After Ron Wolf strikes out, Dale Ainsworth doubles to left, but gets hurt sliding into 2nd.... Howard McNeal goes in to run for him. McNeal will stay in the game to play left and Woody Griesbach will move to right.

Top of the Third:
Gary Long leads off with a single, goes to third on a hit by Dave Lesley and, with 1 out, scores on a ground out by Dave Benya. 5 to 0, Beavers.

Top of the Seventh:
On the Hill: Dave Staffeld (26-R), beginning his 4th inning of shutout work. With 1 out, Jeff Schottler singles and goes to 2nd when CF Roger Crandall overruns the ball for an error. Randy James then hits an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence!! 7 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Seventh:
Ron Wolf has thrown 54 pitches. After 2 more tosses, he has allowed a run. Norm Wynne doubles, only the Oaks' 2nd hit of the game, and Henry Rangel singles him home. 7 to 1, Beavers. The Bullpen is scrambled. On the 3rd pitch of the inning, he gives up the 3rd hit, a double to Roger Crandall. Farley Ross grounds one to short and Dave Lesley boots it... 7 to 2, Beavers. Wolf manages to get 2 outs without any more runs allowed, but then John Ross clears the bases with another double... 7 to 4, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R). Avery Shular lines out to 2nd to end the inning.

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Joe Peck (28-R). With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler hits a home run to left! 8 to 4, Beavers. Only the 3rd home run allowed by Peck in 61.1 IP.

Won - 8 to 4

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 6 hits and made 1 error

Ron Wolf (W 16-11) went 6.2 innings, allowed 4 runs (1 earned), 5 hits, no walks and struck out no one.
RHP Antoine Redd (SV 13) went 2.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

Bart Poulin (L 1-1) went 3.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 1.

Dale Ainsworth hit a double and drew a walk in his only 2 plate appearances. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with his 11th home run of the season, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. 3B Randy James hit his 17th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 2b Gary Long, who had been in a slump, had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBI. C Dave Benya hit a double and his 1st home run of the year and had 3 RBI.

Pepe's report on Ainsworth is that he has a sore leg muscle that will hurt him for about a week when he runs, but otherwise should not affect his play. We'll use him sparingly, though, just to be safe.

We are done with the season series with Oakland and we won it, 13-5.

Random Fact of Week: Now that our pennant race is officially over, I am looking ahead to the award season and I think the only hardware any Beavers might bring home is a Gold Glove or two. 2B Gary Long and SS Eddie Thomas seem like sure bets. Jeff Schottler and Dale Ainsworth have outside shots in left and right. CF Perry Templet has been great, but does not have the numbers that Mike Francoeur does in Minnesota.

We are in Los Angeles to play the Angels a 3 game series. They swept the Seals in 3 games over the weekend. We are 7-5 against them on the season and won all 3 games we played the last time we were here, August 14-16. They are currently 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.99 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 with 4.03). We will not go higher by the end of the season, but could end up a lot lower. Spots 6 through 10 are bunched tightly together. We have only scored 6 more runs than the Angels. Los Angeles is 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.88 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.37).

Portland Beavers (90-60 .600 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Terry Melton (26-R 11-3 2.13) vs. LA: Allen Sanders (28-R 7-10 2.83)

We are 2-1 against Sanders on the season. He pitched 2 very good games and one bad one.

Melton is making his 3rd start since returning from the Disabled List. He was not so good the first time out, but pitched better last time. He did not have a decision in either game.

Jeff Schottler grounds a double play ball to short, but Dennis Webb takes out the second baseman and they only get the force out, 6-4. But Webb hurt himself.... Terry Melton went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 5 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. He threw a WP. Melton was averaging less than 1 walk per 9 IP before his back injury. Since coming back from the DL he is averaging 3.4, not counting the intentional walk.
RHP Barry Chapman (W 8-3) pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 2. He is currently at the top of the Bullpen depth chart.

Allen Sanders went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one.
RHP Ernie Auel (L 3-11 BS 7) went 1 inning, gave us 2 runs, 2 hits, both home runs.

LF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits with his 2nd home run and drew a walk. I am starting to like him again! PH Dale Ainsworth hit a double and scored a run.

Pepe's report on C Dennis Webb was that I needed to call the hospital.... They said he had a broken hand... Well, he is done for the season. He was one of the hottest hitters on the team, batting .366 with 6 2B in 36 AB in September.

Dennis Webb was put on the Disabled List. There is no catcher at Vancouver (AAA) worth calling up. In fact, there are not any hitters there worth calling up.... So we will called up the old man RP Curt Riley (35-R) and will go with a 6 man Bullpen in an effort to keep arms fresh for the Championship Series. This will also keep me from having to send Christy the PA to that print shop she detests...

Portland Beavers (91-60 .603 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Frank Martin (26-R 15-10 3.04) Rookie vs. LA: Dave Ibarra (28-R 15-10 3.27)

Portland Beavers (91-61 .599 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Lonny Tomski (27-R 3-2 3.36) Rookie vs. LA: Lee Meadows (25-R 0-0 12.27) Rookie

Meadows has made 3 starts and gone 11 innings and allowed 26 hits and 15 runs, but has somehow avoided taking a loss. Los Angles is 3-0 in his starts. Editor's Note: There was a real Major League pitcher back in 20's named Lee Meadows, who won 188 games. I don't think this impostor will win 188 games...

Tomski pitched a 1 to 0 shutout last time out.

Friday, September 21, Year I

We are in Seattle to play a 3 game series over the weekend and finish up our final road trip of the year. They just split 2 games in Oakland and are 12-6 in September. We are 9-3 against them on the season and won 2 games the last time we were in the Kingdome, June 19-20. They are in a 3 way tie for 7th in scoring in the PCL, along with us and San Francisco, with 3.97 runs per game. They are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.67 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.36).

Portland Beavers (91-62 .595 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (66-87 .431 25 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 16-11 3.17) vs. SEA: Lee Ringstad (27-L 9-11 3.89)

Ringstad was claimed off waivers from Kansas City on June 27. We only faced him once, when he as a Royal, and beat him, scoring 5 runs in 4.1 IP.

After losing 6 starts in row, Wolf has now won his last 4.

Top of the First:

McNeal steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a throwing error by the catcher. Randy James lines one hard to right and ends up with a double! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin strikes out.

Bottom of the First:

Okay, Christy the PA seems to be a ward against Wolf's first inning curse, so we will let her write up this inning...

John Haynes is the first batter for Seattle. He is a good looking fellow with kind eyes. He rolls one on the carpet down to Jeff Austin at first base who picks the ball up and trots over to first. Randy Hobson wastes no time in hitting the first ball that Ron Wolf throws to him and he hits it very hard to right field where Woody Griesbach, the new boy on the team, catches it on one bounce. Terry Singer is the next batter. He lets the first ball that Ronnie throws to him go by and our catcher, Dave Benya, jumps up and throws the ball back to Ron but he ducks and the ball goes all the way to second. Oh! The man who was on first is now at second, but he is jogging back to the dugout. Terry Singer hits the next ball Ronnie throws to him right to Eddie Thomas, our shortstop, who picks the ball up off the carpet and throws it to Jeff Austin and the players all trot off the field.

Thanks, Christy. No runs!!

Bottom of the Second:
Should have had Christy write up the whole game and we'd get a shutout, but I am not sure you'd know it... With 1 out, Paul Blaine doubles to left center and then steals 3rd. Bob Dillon strikes out! Steve Mann lines a hit to left, though and Blaine scores to tie the game at 1. Mann gets thrown out trying to steal.

Top of the Third:
P Ron Wolf leads off with a hit and Howard McNeal bunts him to 2nd. Woody Griesbach gets a hit, but then gets thrown out trying to steal. They had a pitchout called. Jeff Schottler strikes out to end the inning.

Bottom of the Third:
Ron Wolf starts us off by beaning the worst hitter on their team, Oscar Reynoso. P Len Ringstad bunts him over to 2nd and with 2 outs, Randy Hobson doubles him home. 2 to 1, Seattle. Terry Singer follows with a home run just over the fence in left. 4 to 1, Seattle.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Jim Perkins homers to right. 5 to 1, Seattle.

Lost - 5 to 1

We had 5 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 9 hits and made 1 error

Ron Wolf (L 16-12) went 7 innings, allowed 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, no walks, 1 HB and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 2.

Len Ringstad (W 10-11) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8.

3B Randy James hit a double and had our RBI. He hit the ball hard the other three times he was up, but came up empty.

Portland Beavers (91-63 .591 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (67-87 .435 24 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Terry Melton (26-R 11-3 2.15) vs. SEA: Alan Merandi (28-R 9-17 4.35)

We are 1-1 against Merandi. He pitched 1 great game and 1 decent game.

Melton walked 5 batters in his last outing, extremely out of character for him. He needs to get back in the groove quick, because the end of the regular season is coming up before you know it.

Bottom of the Second:

Bottom of the Sixth:
John Haynes leads off with a walk and we get the Bullpen up. Randy Hobson lines a hit to left. Terry Singer lines a double to right center and Haynes scores to the game at 2 and put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Call to the Bullpen: Barry Chapman (26-R). Top of the Seventh:
Well, I pulled my first really stupid move.... I mean, I have made plenty of stupid moves, but this one takes the cake... Gary Long will play there and Jeff Austin will move over to second and Joe Harrison will come in to play first....

Lost - 4 to 2

I should not complain about only scoring 2 runs; it is the most we have scored in the last 4 games....

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 8 hits and made no errors

Down on the Farm: 1st round draft pick SP Ron Dreiling (21-L) was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his shoulder and will be out for a full calendar year, at least. He went 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA in his first professional season for Salem (D) of the Northwestern League.
