Preliminary Series #15
1978 Montreal Expos (76-86) vs 1945 Detroit Tigers (88-65) NEWHOUSER FIRES TIGERS THROUGH When the Tigers needed wins the most, they turned to their ace Hal Newhouser and he delivered in a big way. The Lefty threw over 14 innings of shutout ball and struck out 25 Expos. Behind their ace, Detroit won game 1 by a slim 1-0 score and with the series tied at two, won game five in another shutout. The Tigers ran off three wins in a row to take it in six with Bob Swift driving in seven in the series. The young Montreal talent was just too raw against the championship mettle of the Tigers when it mattered most. |

Preliminary Series #16
1968 Washington Senators (65-96) vs 1902 Boston Americans (77-60) Boston Smallball Looks Modern The Boston Americans gave a quick lesson to the 1968 Senators what it feels like to win the old fashioned way, as Boston easily did away with the Senators. The Americans shutout Washington twice in the series and the Senators left scores of runners stranded along the way. Cy Young closed out the series winning both his starts in the process while Buck Freeman hit two of the seven Boston home runs putting a nice spin on things. The Washington pitching was a mess for most of this series and manager Jim Lemon really had nowhere to turn. |

Preliminary Series #17
1935 Boston Braves (38-115) vs 1955 New York Yankees (96-58) No Sweat For Mighty Yanks A 115 loss team couldnt hope for very much in a series against the Yankees in their golden era. As expected the Yanks swept away the Braves and did so by allowing only three runs in the four games and shutting out Boston twice. Bob Turley struck out 10 in the opener and Irv Noren drove in 5 in the series with seven hits. Mickey Mantle had 3 RBI but a comfortable Yankee team didnt need much. |

So I will put this thread to a close because I have decided to go in another direction with it and use Youtube for this idea. I have created my own youtuve channel and am posting these historical matchups for all to see with my commentary. Feel free to check it out, I post random historical matchups frequently. Also a good way to promote this great game.
