Historical League with different years, part 2

When I try to create a fictional league featuring historical teams from different years, I always end up with a league populated entirely by fictional players. What am I doing wrong?

Create an historical league in the year you want to actually start in, say for example 1951. Follow all the steps through creation until everything is done.

Then go into league setup, edit league structure. Delete the teams you don't want and use the import function to bring in the teams you do want.

Set up your league structure how you want it, # of divisions, teams per division, etc etc.

CREATE A NEW SCHEDULE - Sorry, but I can't emphasize this enough, anytime you mess with your league structure always create a new schedule.

Make any other adjustments, settings to your league you like.

Begin play and enjoy.

Put your self in Commish mode first, then go for it.

What happens to the players when teams are deleted?

I am pretty sure it deletes them. I always do a mass release from each team I am going to delete, been doing it that way for a # of versions.

The players all go to the FA pool.

They are not deleted.
