Bill Whitby 1964

Bill Whitby passed away over the weekend (March 12). He was 72. Bill spent most of his career in the farm system of the Twins, for whom he appeared in 4 games in 1964. Oddly, his only Topps appearance came on a split rookie card in 1967. He pitched for the Charlotte Hornets in 1963 and 1964 where he met Donelle, his wife of 50 years. She just happened to be "Miss Hornet" of 1964. Bill spent quite a few years with the Denver farm club and Getty has plenty of images of him with the Bears.

The portrait shot, here, is from Baseball-Birthdays. The other has been on my hard drive for quite a while and I'd forgotten where it came from. It kinda looked like a dr.jteee eBay image and, as it turned out, it was (it's still available, in fact).

Johnny Bench, circa 1966

Might this be the bookend to the photo on Bench's 1968 rookie card? Merkle said that it was likely taken in spring of 1966.

Found this one in the massive NN folder that keonleafs passed on to me to ID. Lots of superstar photos, but this one wins the gold medal. Image NN1091.

Love this '62 wire-service photo of the two Bob Millers ... but does anyone have it in better resolution? Many thanks if so!

Don't forget Phillies RHP Bob Miller (1949-1958). That's three Bob Miller pitchers with overlapping careers. Good thing they weren't pitching to either of the two Hal Smith catchers who were also active at that time.
It gets confusing - doesn't it?

Bench

There's no evidence Topps photographed the Reds in Spring Training, 1967 - the last year they wore the baker's caps before switching to the solid red - otherwise they would've had an image of Gary Nolan for use on a 1967 rookie card. Thus, 1966.

Bench is shown on the '68 card in essentially the same pose, cap backwards. His 1969 card is from the same shoot - a catching pose. The image above is his 1969 All-Star card (might explain the apparent adhesive stain in the image, upper left). It was reused in a throwback set about a decade ago.

This also provides an opportunity to explain why so few "star" players turn up in the Topps Vault files or auctions. They were kept in a separate set of filing cabinets for easy access, which had the added consequence of making them much easier to pilfer. By the time I first saw the archive room in 2001 some files like Mantle's were virtually empty and I don't think the Seaver folder had anything older than 1977 (which is especially bad because as a brash rookie in his first shoot for his first baseball card, hd posed left-handed). The few star transparencies that have been sold off (like the 1957 Koufax grouping) were in fact found inadvertently by me as they let me rummage through the unfiled stuff.

Anyway, the majority of remaining images were filed elsewhere. This Bench was probably found among the production materials for the 1969 4th Series.

Tom Seaver 1967

While we're here, I don't think I've ever posted this before.

Not only did Seaver - before he ever pitched in a major league game - have the gall to try the favorite '60s trick of fooling the photographer, but this pose made it all the way through the Topps production process to the proof stage. The 1968 1st Series sheets which contained this delightful disaster were amazingly error-riddled. Bob Gibson also fooled the photogs and the editors to get a left-handed shot printed as a proof, and at least five of the 1968 Rookie Cards were marked "1967 Rookie Cards." Plenty of other color mistakes and a couple of players with positions left off.

FOLDER NN accounted for

The 1,000-plus images in Folder NN have been checklisted an included in the master checklist we've placed in the Chop County board.

John of baseball-birthdays fame will be adding the folders containing the images from NN, LE and FE into the OneDrive file soon. The keonleafs corrections have also been entered, as will others once we get them.

Merkle, so many thanks for the Seaver shot. Had only ever seen a small B&W of it that did it zero justice.

The funny thing is that would have been far and away the best Topps Seaver, IMHO. He looks almost invariably dull and/or dour in what we got.

Bill White 1956

Not a lot of images of this triple threat (1st Baseman/Yankees Broadcaster/National League President) in any uniform besides the Cardinals or Phillies, let alone anything in color during his season with the '56 New York Giants or his partial one with the team in San Francisco in 1958.

White was one of several rookies shown in a 1956 issue of the old SPORT magazine, and though the paper was poor and the colors not so hot, it really is surprisingly good:
