They had nine other siblings (five girls), the legend being that John "Spike" Sadowski, the eldest, was the best ballplayer of the bunch, but who turned down a chance to sign for the Pirates because he had already begun a lucrative career in the steel industry. Bob, the youngest, is the last surviving brother. The other wrinkle is that Jim Sadowski, briefly a Pirate in 1974, is the nephew of all three. But his father did not play in the majors. Yes, Curt Simmons was quite underrated. He finished with193 wins and he was a sure 200 games winner if not for his service ( Sept.1950 - May 1952) in the military during the Korean War. The interruption came just when his career was peaking. Last edited by KenRaffensberger16; 03-06-2016 at 01:01 PM. |

Alan Bannister 1974
Tell the truth: did you have any memory of this former Number One draft choice playing for the Houston Astros?
I was moving an album full of the Mothers' Cookies team issues of the 1980's and there was Bannister in the '84 Astros set. He had been purchased late in spring training from Cleveland, appeared in just nine games for Houston, and was dealt to the Rangers on May 25. |

Lexibell Files! Color! Prospects! Fleer!
Like everyone, was tired of waiting for the Topps Vault gold rush, I took a little closer look at the hundreds of folders comprising the Lexibell file. Surprise!
A series of folders with the prefix "neg" are 100s of posed and action photos of prospects and current stars from 2000 and 2001, including many that were used for FLEER cards. Yes, a Fleer Vault! This Kane Davis image, from folder Neg9, was taken at the same time as a shot on a two-player 2001 Fleer Ultra prospect card (#248) but have found no actual use. Opened four of the five so far, and they are all color and from that era. Happy hunting! Last edited by rico43; 03-07-2016 at 05:32 PM. |

1989 Dubuque Braves: unchecklisted cards
Several posts on this thread would seem to indicate that some of you collect regional issues because of the otherwise scarce players that can pop up. But few teams have offered a tougher challenge to collectors than the Atlanta Braves in years past. Several of their team issues have still not been checklisted.
Beginning in 1989, the team offered player cards on selected days (often a Tuesday) in groups of three or sometimes more. They gave away cards through the 2003 season, every years sponsored by that year's particular hot dog provider -- Dubuque (89-91), Lykes (92-96) and Bryan (97-03). Beginning in 1990, complete, perforated and slightly smaller cards would be given out with a team photo. A "team photo set" was all that was issued in 1996. In 1989, however, the first-time promotion were exclusively issued as single cards, and for several years the set was perceived as complete at 30 cards; no complete sets were ever offered and no one with the Braves bothered to compile a checklist. But three more 1989s came to light much later: Geronimo Berroa, Dion James and Zane Smith. Neither James or Smith was ever officially issued; both were traded on July 2nd in separate deals, James for Oddibe McDowell, who is part of the set. Their existence is likely only due to uncut sheets being released by the printer, Atlanta-based Tucker-Castleberry, some years later (which is where I got mine). Berroa may simply have been an early season release that escaped detection -- even though that would bring the set total to an odd number of 31. |

We've lost a few more former major leaguers.
Bob Spicer, a knuckleballer who pitched for the A's in '55-'56, passed away February 27. He was 90. Steve Kraly, who pitched in 5 games for the 1953 Yankees, passed away on Monday, March 7. He was 86. Of slightly more import to me than his brief Yankees career, Steve was the official scorer for the Binghamton Mets. The Spicer picture, showing him with the Los Angeles Angels of the PCL, accompanied his obituary. It's about as good a picture of him as I've seen, aside from his Mother's Cookies card (which also pictured him with the Angels). The Steve Kraly portrait was posted to the late, lamented Baseball-Birthdays. The posed pitching autographed picture is a brightened and cropped version of a current eBay offering from seller livehorn. (A site search of OOTP turned up two photo posts for which the pictures were removed as happens with some older posts for assorted reasons.) It's also been recently learned that former major league catcher Bob Schmidt passed away on May 2, 2015 (confirmed by his daughter). |

Baseball Cards 1956-1973
Not sure how many people from this site download my cards but a new update is now ready. I have a new website also which will make things much easier. The 20 zips include the fully updated 18 seasons noted above as well as a manager zip and update zip that only includes the nearly 1500 new cards in this update. Once again, if you do not want to place the new cards in season folders yourself, you can update the seasons and avoid that. One thing you cannot do is just simply paste these over what you may have already downloaded. If you do that, you will delete cards with the same name. This update probably includes more upgrades (color replacing black and white/correct team replacing wrong team/right uniform replacing wrong) than any other update. New updates for football (1967 season) will follow and then Basketball (1968-69 through 1973-74 for NBA; 1970-71 through 1973-74 ABA) and hockey (1966-67 through 1969-70 and 1990-91). Enjoy.

Alan Bannister (MLB career: 1974-1985).
Quote:
Alan Bannister's time with both Texas teams, Houston and Texas at the very end of his career was brief and it's just a blur in my memory. I remember him with the Phillies, since he came up with that organization. After a cup of coffee in the big leagues in 1974, he was the Phillies 1975 opening day second baseman, but played himself out of that job, more so with his defensive lapses rather than with the bat.. Late in his career he was he good offensive producer off the bench for the Cleveland Indians. I guess most people remember him from his Chicago White Sox days, when he got his most playing time. He did a respectable job there and in his two years of his career where he got over 500 at bats, 1977 and 1979 he hit .275 and .285, respectively. He was the regular second baseman for the 1977 White Sox, one of the more popular non-division winning teams ever (3rd place, 90-72). That team won a lot of games with their hitting, but also lost a significant number of games with poor fielding. Their home run barrages and late-innings comebacks prompted the "Na, Na, Na, Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye" chant that White Sox fans stole from a popular rock song. Bannister fit right into that mode because he had some defensive shortcomings both at 2B and in LF, the two positions he played most in his career, but he was a decent table-setting offensive contributor.. He hit .270 lifetime, with 108 Stolen Bases (15 or more SB four times, with a best season of 22 SB) in just under 1,000 career MLB games, but he had little power (19 career HRs).. His career might have been disappointing for a first-round draft choice, but it wasn't a total bust, either. Last edited by KenRaffensberger16; 03-08-2016 at 11:20 AM. |

Spicer reached the majors for just four game appearances, two in '55 and two in '56 (KC Athletics) . Yet he pitched in organized baseball for 15 seasons (1947 to 1961). You have to respect that kind of dedication to the game. |

Dave Robinson
Does anyone have images of short term Padre outfielder Dave Robinson? I tried the search option but didn't find anything. Thanks.

I saw that one (which was also attached to the obit), but I honestly thought it looked like an Old Timers Day outing. I mean, yeah, he was like 30 when he reached the majors, but I wouldn't have thought the years would have been that hard on him at 30. Just sayin'.
