Houston Astros (46-58 .442 18 GB in 6th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (68-35 .660 7.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: Chuck Nelson (25-R 5-14 3.97) vs. POR: Frank Flores (25-R 13-6 2.73) All-Star/PCLCS MVP

Nelson started the season 3-1, but is 2-13 since. He gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in 6.1 IP last time out to get a loss. He started 2 games in our 4 game series in the Astrodome and lost them both, but he pitched decently both times.

Flores is making his 4th try to become the 1st 14 game winner in the PCL. Billy Fritts of Boston has already won 14 in the NL. He has lost his last 2 attempts and has allowed 13 runs (11 earned) in his last 3 starts (13.2 IP).

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 68 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 17 MPH wind blowing out to center
Attendance: 24,420

Top of the First:
Alan Phelps grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Jim Sager lines a hit to left. Russ Jimenez swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Tommy Gibralter lines out to right!

Bottom of the First:

Dave Risinger grounds out to 3rd. Jerry Suazo takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Enrique Ramos strikes out... Oscar Trejo doubles to center and Suazo scores from 1st! 1 to 0, Beavers! You might wonder why Trejo is still on the Beavers with his sub-.600 OPS. The answer is that there is no one at Vancouver (A) who is hitting well enough to get called up... The same goes for Jack Hinckley and Juan Rojas.... Jeff Galka lines a hit to right and Trejo beats the throw home! 2 to 0, Beavers! Denny Peters takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Kim Springer lines a hit to left and the bases are loaded with 2 outs. You may also wonder why Springer is batting in the 7 hole with his stats being better than a lot of guys batting higher. The answer is that every time I move him up in the order, he quits hitting... Rick Mansoor takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to force in a run! 3 to 0, Beavers! P Frank Flores swings at the first pitch and lines out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Second:
Dave Risinger lines a hit to left and goes to 2nd on a ground out. Enrique Ramos strikes out again... P Chuck Nelson has 2 strikeouts, both Ramos, the best hitter in the lineup today... Oscar Trejo doubles again, this time down the right field line and Risinger scores! 4 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fifth:

Jeff Galka and Denny Peters lead off with back to back hits. But the next three make outs.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Alan Phelps swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left. Jim Sager lines a hit to center and Phelps beats the throw to 3rd. The Bullpen gets busy. Russ Jimenez pops out to left and the runners hold. Tommy Gibralter lines a hit to center and Phelps scores. 4 to 1, Beavers. Bob Alsip grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Tom Butterworth (28-R), who pitched 2.1 scoreless inning on Friday. Kim Springer and Rick Mansoor lead off with back to back hits. P Frank Flores swings away, much to my chagrin, and flies out to left. Dave Risinger grounds one to short, but Kevin Shellhammer, who moved there in a double switch, makes a bad throw to 2nd and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Jerry Suazo strikes out... Enrique Ramos grounds out to 1st, unassisted....

Top of the Ninth:

Tommy Gibralter takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and Bob Alsip lines a hit to left. Call to the Bullpen: Steve Stewart (24-L). PH Billy Haggar (33-R), batting .316 with 1 HR in 19 AB, grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and Gibralter goes to 3rd! P Stewart balks in the run... 4 to 2, Beavers. Kevin Shellhammer strikes out and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 4 to 2

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 6 hits and made 1 error

Frank Flores (W 14-6) went 8+ innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. He is the 1st 14 game winner in the PCL! Finally!
LHP Steve Stewart (SV 3) went 1 scoreless innings and struck out 1. He balked home a run for Flores.

Chuck Nelson (L 5-15) went 5 innings, gave us 4 runs, 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. He threw a WP. He is the 1st pitcher to lose 3 games to the Beavers this season.

2B Dave Risinger had 2 hits and scored a run. 1B Oscar Trejo hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBI. 2B Jeff Galka had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Denny Peters had a hit and a walk. LF Kim Springer had 3 hits and stole a base. C Rick Mansoor had a hit and a walk and an RBI.

We sent IF Juan Rojas (25-S) to Vancouver (A) and recalled RF Greg Unser (28-R), who was 2 for 9 with 4 SO for the Beavers earlier in the year. He is only hitting .238 for the Mounties but has hit lefties well.

Won - 4 to 2

8 straight games holding an opponent to 3 runs or fewer!

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 7 hits and made 1 error

Bobby Johnson (W 13-5) went 6 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4.
RHP Leonardo Sanchez (H 6) went 1 innings, allowed 1 unearned run, 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Rich Larkin (SV 13) pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 3.

Editor's Note:
OOTP screwed up and did not give Johnson the win, giving it to Larkin, though it gave Sanchez a Hold properly. I fixed it manually and reported the Bug. Probably is related to Johnson getting hurt to end the 6th inning.

Billy Wright (L 9-9) went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

2B A.J. Lee had 2 hits. C Tim Higbee had a hit and a walk and scored a run. 1B Glenn Snowden had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Dave Risinger hit a double and a triple and had 3 RBI.

Trudy's report on Bobby Johnson is a stiff back. She expects him to be okay by his next start, but it may take a day or two more.

We are making a brief excursion to San Diego to play a 3 game series over the weekend, before coming back home for a 10 game home stand. The Padres just lost 2 of 3 here to Hollywood and have lost 12 of their last 15 to fall behind us in the standings. We are 3-3 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time we were here, June 21-22. They are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.36 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.41). The Padres lead the PCL with 118 SB and we are last with 36. They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.62 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.10). Their run differential is +80 and ours is +140, the Best in Baseball.

Portland Beavers (71-36 .664 9.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (62-46 .574 9.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Flores (25-R 14-6 2.70) All-Star/PCLCS MVP vs. SD: Jeff McKeeman (33-R 8-9 3.50)

Flores finally won his 14th game in his 4th try last time out with 2 runs and 6 hits allowed in 8 IP. He is making his 1st try at becoming the 1st 15 game winner in the Majors.

McKeeman has lost his last 5 starts after having a 5 game winning streak before that. He only allowed 3 runs in 8 IP last time out, but the Padres were shut out. He beat us in June right here in San Diego, holding us to 2 runs in 8 innings.

Today is Steve Stewart's 25th birthday!

We are back home for a 10 game home stand and we begin with a 2 game set with Seattle. They won 2 of 3 at Sacramento over the weekend. We are 6-3 against them this season and split a pair of games the last time they were here, June 30- July 1. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.46 runs per game (Portland is down to #5 with 4.43). The Rainiers are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.51 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.05). Their run differential is -6 and ours is +151, still the Best in Baseball.

1B Oscar Trejo (31-R) and OF Jack Hinckley (28-R) were both sent to Vancouver (A). CF Larry Ballard (25-L) and rookie Leon Davis (22-R) have been called up. Davis was our 1st round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. He is hitting .327 for the Mounties, but not walking very much. But Hinckley wasn't walking any either and was not hitting .327, though he is a better fielder. This gives us 7 outfielders on the team. Ballard can play 2nd and Pemberton can play 2nd or 3rd in a pinch.. Juan Rojas (25-S) is hitting .450 since being sent down, by the way.

I am so nonsuperstitious that I am not going to even mention that today is Friday the 13th.

Kansas City Royals (62-52 .544 8 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (76-37 .673 13.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Sergio Peralta (29-R 10-7 2.75) 2-time All-Star(01,03) vs. POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 14-3 1.93) All-Star/Gold Glove

Peralta is their #1 starter. They have three #1 starters (Graham Pethel and Al Johnson). He gave up 3 runs on only 4 hits in 8 IP last time out to get a win. We last faced him last season and beat him, but only scored 3 runs in 8.2 IP.

Phillips is now our #1 starter, though we have not told anyone, so keep it mum. He has not lost in two months, going 6-0 in his last 10 starts. He has only allowed 1 earned run total in his last 3. He is 3rd in the PCL in ERA.

He tries to steal 2nd, but C Tim Higbee throws him out! Brian Mitchell, the ex-Beaver, who still gets some love from my heart, swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd! He was only traded due to injury concerns and not because he disappointed us.

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Howard Tanski hits a home run to left center... 3 to 1, Beavers. Only the fourth HR hit off P Barry Phillips this season.

PH Rick Adkins (35-R), 1 for 5 this series, lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with no outs for the second inning in a row... Call to the Bullpen: Leonardo Sanchez (25-R), making his first appearance in 9 days.... We have had too many good pitching performances by our starters of late... Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Angelo Quintero (31-R) with a 1.61 ERA in 28 IP. A.J. Lee swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left center. Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Dave Madrid, their All-Star(01) closer, who took the loss yesterday. He only has 3 losses and 3 Blown Saves all season, but 2 of each have been in his last 2 appearances. Top of our order is up. A.J. Lee takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. If we win our 3rd straight game in the bottom of the 9th, you had better make some space, because I am going to do some dancing! Jerry Suazo flies out to center... Enrique Ramos hits a home run to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won - 8 to 7

Unbelievable!
3 straight wins in the bottom of the 9th!!!
And I have outed myself as a terrible dancer!
But an enthusiastic one!

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Dallas had 14 hits and made 1 error

Barry Phillips went 5.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 6. 104 pitches. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Steve Stewart (H 11) got 2 outs, allowed 3 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. That you are allowed to get a Hold by allowing 3 runs to score and only getting 2 batters out is more than a little silly...
RHP Leonardo Sanchez (BS 4) got 2 outs, allowed 1 run, 1 hit and struck out 1.
RHP Denny Jennissen went 1.1 scoreless innings, though he allowed 2 runners to score, allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Larry McLellan (W 3-1) pitched a perfect inning.

Tommy Harrison went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 4. 109 pitches.
RHP Dave Madrid (L 2-4 BS 4) got 1 out, gave us 2 runs, 1 hit, a home run and 1 walk. He has blown 3 straight Save attempts and gotten 3 straight losses.

2B/3B A.J. Lee had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Jerry Suazo hit a double and scored a run. RF Enrique Ramos had 4 hits with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. He now has 14 home runs on the season. C Tim Higbee drew 2 walks and scored a run. PH Larry Ballard hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Kim Springer had a hit and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI.

For Dallas, everyone in their starting lineup, except the pitcher, had at least 1 hit and they all at least scored a run or had an RBI, but none of them had 3 of anything, which is the minimum requirement for an opponent to get a mention in the post-game report.

Trudy's report on Leonardo Sanchez is back tightness that should be fine in a day or two. She says I have to remember to keep the relievers working regularly or this type of stuff will keep happening... I apologized for my neglect, though she may not have thought I was very sincere as I was still dancing...

Dallas Eagles (64-56 .533 12 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (81-38 .681 16.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: John Hanley (23-R 0-8 9.22) Rookie vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (25-R 15-5 2.64)

Hanley has had 3 straight no decisions, which is a big deal for him. Why the Eagles are pitching him over other candidates is a mystery. In 13 starts, he has pitched only 54.2 innings (4.21 per game). He has walked 46 batters (7.6/9 IP) and opposing hitters are batting .342 with 10 HR in 228 AB. Lefties are hitting .410 against him! We have never faced him, but are looking forward to it.

Johnson pitched a CG 7 hitter and allowed 1 run last time out for a win. He is our 3rd straight pitcher taking a shot at becoming the 1st 16 game winner in the Majors. The other two, both chosen to the All-Star team, failed.

Top of the First:
Gerry Elliott swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Brian Mitchell bloops a hit to left. Gilberto Lule flies out to deep right. Howard Tanski swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the First:

A.J. Lee swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Jerry Suazo swings at a 3-1 pitch and grounds out to 2nd... Enrique Ramos grounds out to short... Of course....

Top of the Second:

Dennis Allen leads off with a double to center and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Mark Carlson grounds out to 2nd and Allen scores... 1 to 0, Eagles.

Bottom of the Fourth:

Glenn Snowden grounds one to 2nd, but 1B Dave Kunkel drops the throw for an error, only his second of the season. Tim Higbee grounds a hit to right and Snowden goes to 3rd. Jeff Galka takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4, our first walk of the game against the wildest pitcher in Baseball, and the bases are loaded with no outs. Kim Springer swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center and Snowden tags up and beats the throw home. Tie Game: 1 to 1. Denny Peters grounds a hit to center and Higbee heads home....Safe! 2 to 1, Beavers! P Bobby Johnson lays down a bunt, but C Dennis Allen gets the force at 3rd, 2-6. A.J. Lee swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Still only 2 runs off the Worst Pitcher in Baseball... With 1 out, Kim Springer takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. With 2 outs, P Bobby Johnson doubles to left and Springer scores from 1st! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the Seventh:
Howard Tanski doubles over the head of the center fielder... The Bullpen is up. With 1 out, Dave Kunkel grounds a hit to right. Mark Carlson pops out to left and the runners hold! PH David Glenn (21-S), the rookie who is 1 for 2 with a double in this series, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up... Dern! That means the Worst Pitcher in Baseball is out of the game... And he has had a Quality Start against us.... PH John Pevehouse (26-L) is sent up. Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (25-R). Not lefty Steve Stewart, because Pevehouse is hitting .343 against lefties and .240 versus righties.... He grounds out to 1st, unassisted!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: John Farrance (42-R). John Pevehouse has stayed in the game to play 2nd. With 2 outs, Glenn Snowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tim Higbee grounds a hit up the middle. Jeff Galka lines a hit to center and Snowden scores without a throw! 4 to 1, Beavers!

Won - 4 to 1

Sweep!

We had 9 hits and made no errors
Dallas had 5 hits and made 1 error

Bobby Johnson (W 16-5) went 6.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double and had an RBI. The one snubbed by the All-Star team is the first pitcher to 16 wins in the Majors!
RHP Rich Larkin (SV 16) went 2.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk and struck out 2.

John Hanley (L 0-9) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.

1B Glenn Snowden had 1 walk and scored 2 runs. C Tim Higbee, the only player on the team who treated Hanley the way he should, had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B Jeff Galka had a hit and a walk and an RBI. LF Kim Springer had a walk, scored a run and had a SF.

Around the League:
Since the All-Star break, every team in the PCL West, except us, has a losing record. The only team in the East with a losing record is Houston. The biggest shocker is that the team with the worst record in the PCL since the break is the San Diego Padres, still 2nd in the West, but now 17.5 games behind. Only the Phillies of the NL, who have just lost their 10th game in a row, have a worse record than the Padres, who are 10-23 (.303).
