CF Brian Mitchell (22-L) was placed on the DL and CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R) was recalled from Vancouver (A).

Portland Beavers (31-22 .577 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at

In January, Gonzales was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh, but 4 days later San Antonio claimed him back. He has pitched 2 straight complete games and the most recent one was a 5 hit shutout. We faced him once last year and beat him, scoring 5 runs in 4.1 IP.

Bill Moon (26-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A) and RP Jeremy Head (27-R) was called up. Head is not too tough to hit, but he has not allowed a HR in the minors in 23.1 IP and he has only walked 2. We will try to limit him to mop up duties.

We are back home to play the team that just knocked us out of first place, the Hollywood Stars, a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 at home versus Salt Lake City and are 27-5 (.844) in their last 32 games. We won 3 of 4 from them in Hollywood back in April when they started the season 5-16 (.238) and were in last place. They are 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.89 runs per game (Portland is 2nd with 4.87). They are 3rd in the PCL in BA (.278) and 1st in OBP (.347) and 3rd in OPS (.730). We are 4th in BA (.269), 4th in OBP (.337) and 6th in OPS (.721). Even though we have scored almost a run more per game than them, with 3 of our starting hitters on the DL, I think it is safe to assume that their offense is now better than ours. The Stars are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.07 per game (Portland is now #2 with 3.35). Their run differential is -10 and ours is +82, now 3 runs behind Dallas for the best in Baseball. They are +46 in their last 32 games and we are +22 over the same span.

Hollywood Stars (32-22 .593 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (31-23 .574 in 2nd place in the PCL West)

HOL: Gerry Sullivan (26-R 6-2 1.88) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 8-1 2.57) Gold Glove(01)

Sullivan has not lost a game since April 22. He has not allowed more than 2 runs in any of his last 6 starts. We did not face him in April. Last year, he was 2-0 in 3 starts against us and pitched well each time.

Muir has not lost since April 14. He has pitched 3 straight CG. He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits his last time out.

Top of the First:
The first 5 hitters in their lineup are all hitting over .300... Gus McCollum grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Fred Rambo draws a walk. Jose Naranjo grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!! Only the 2nd time he has hit into a GDP this season!

Bottom the First:
Jerry Suazo swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Jack Hinckley walks on 4 pitches. We should be able to run on this battery, neither of the members being very good at that phase of the game. Hinckley gets caught stealing.... Yep... Carlos Lopez doubles to left center... Yep... Glenn Snowden swings at a 3-2 pitch and pokes a hit to left center and Lopez scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Tim Higbee walks. Reid Reddick grounds out to 3rd.

Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to right and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to center and Lee scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! This would be a good time for Carlos Lopez to hit his first home run... We have to settle for a line drive single to right, scoring Plourde! 3 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden lines a hit to center and Suazo scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! 6 straight hits by batters who have swung away! Tim Higbee lines one over the center fielder's head for a double and 2 runs score!! 6 to 0, Beavers! That does it for P Gerry Sullivan, who's ERA is no longer under 2! New Pitcher: Daryl Bradley (26-L), a rookie with a 6.48 ERA in 16.2 IP and a 1.86 WHIP. 18 SO. Correction: 19 strikeouts, as Reid Reddick falls victim... 2 outs. A.J. Lee grounds a hit to left and Snowden scores! 7 to 0, Beavers! Scott Plourde grounds out to the pitcher. With 3 hits in his career, I guess it was too much to hope for 2 hits in one inning....

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, the Stars get their first hit of the game, a home run to center by Jose Naranjo. 7 to 1, Beavers.

Top of the Fifth:
Larry Church and Bud Lisk lead off with back to back hits. Ivan Arbaiza grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Church goes to 3rd. P Daryl Bradley is allowed to hit and bunts Arbaiza to 2nd and Church holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Gus McCollum fouls out to 3rd!

LF Jose Julio (29-R) lines a hit to left and Lee scores! 8 to 1, Beavers! Glenn Snowden grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Seventh:
Bobby Deaton loops a hit to center and Larry Church draws a walk. We get the Bullpen up. Bud Lisk plops one down in front of the plate and we get the force at 2nd, 1-6, and Deaton goes to 3rd. Ivan Arbaiza flies out to deep left and Deaton tags up and beats the throw home. 8 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Eighth:
Gus McCollum pops one up to shallow left and no one wants to catch it... Base hit... We get the Bullpen up. Fred Rambo grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. With 2 outs, Steve Bones lobs a hit to right and Rambo beats the throw to 3rd. Bobby Deaton grounds a hit to left and Rambo scores. 8 to 3, Beavers. Our dreams of 4 straight CG by P Steve Muir have evaporated... Call to the Bullpen: Vic Kyzer (24-L). Larry Church hits a home run to right.... 8 to 6, Beavers.

Bottom of the Eighth:
On the Hill: Jorge Leal (29-L), beginning his 2nd inning of work after a scoreless 7th. He was signed as a free agent from Cincinnati in December. With 1 out, Glenn Snowden hits a home run to right! 9 to 6, Beavers!

Hollywood Stars (32-23 .582 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (32-23 .582 tied for 1st place in the PCL West)

HOL: Don Becker (28-L Season debut) vs. POR: Bill Woodward (22-R 2-5 4.47) Rookie

Becker has not pitched in the Majors since 2001, when he went 10-12 with a 4.38 ERA for the Stars. Last year, he was 12-15 with a 3.82 ERA for Las Vegas (A). This year, for Vegas, he went 2-7 with a 5.25 ERA. We were 1-1 against him in 2001 and he pitched a 10 inning shutout, the only shutout he has had in the Majors. He's replacing Craig Raposo (25-R), who was 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 6 starts, but is out for 2 months with bone chips in his elbow.

Woodward has not won since April 22. This will probably not be a 1 to 0 game...

Today is SS Scott Plourde's 25th birthday!

Out of the frying pan and into the wok.... We are in San Francisco to play the defending division champs a 2 game set. They just lost 2 of 3 here to the Angels. We beat them in 2 games here back in April. The Seals lead the PCL in scoring with 4.93 runs per game (Portland is 2nd with 4.88). We have scored 2 more runs than they have, but have played 1 more game. They lead the League in BA (.279), HR (63), OBP (.343) and SLG (.435) and, of course, OPS (.778). We are 4th in BA (.270), 9th in HR (39), 4th in OBP (.338) and 6th in SLG (.384) and 5th in OPS (.722). They are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.52 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.35). Their run differential is +23 and ours is +87, 6 ahead of Dallas for the best in Baseball. 2-time MVP RF Dave McDowell (32-R) will miss this series. He is expected back by the weekend from a broken thumb.

Portland Beavers (33-24 .579 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (28-28 .500 4.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Flores (24-R 7-3 3.00) vs. SF: John Mines (31-R 4-3 4.75)

Flores is 2-0 in his last 3 starts, but hasn't had a really good game in a month. His ERA in the last 3 games is 4.19.

Miner was 9-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 25 starts last year and 18-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 27 starts in 2001. He is 2-0 in his last 3 starts, but his best game was the last one, which was a no decision. He pitched 6 shutout innings and only allowed 4 hits and 2 walks. We did not face him in April. Last year, we faced him twice and he pitched 2 good games, but did not have a decision.

Juan Rojas grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Mondolfo takes out SS Webber with his slide and Webber has to leave the game. Andres Mendoza (34-R) is in to play short. He's a better shortstop than Webber, but not much of a hitter. He was signed as a free agent from Brooklyn just before the season began and has spent most of the season in Phoenix (A), batting .194. The next two strike out...

Carlos Lopez and Glenn Snowden each line a hit to right and we have runners at the corners with no outs. Tim Higbee grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Lopez scores. Tie Game: 1 to 1. With 2 outs, Esteban Mondolfo beats out an infield hit. Juan Rojas grounds out to 2nd...

New Pitcher: Doug Kimball (25-R), a rookie with a 2.08 ERA in 26 IP with 31 SO. He strikes out Glenn Snowden. Tim Higbee loops a hit over the shortstop. Reid Reddick triples to left center and Higbee scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! Esteban Mondolfo strikes out... Juan Rojas strikes out...

Top of the Ninth:
PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) strikes out... Jerry Suazo doubles down the right field line and would have had a home run, if not for the wind. Dave Risinger walks on 4 pitches. That does it for P Doug Kimball. New Pitcher: Al Harrell (34-R), their rookie closer. Yes, I said rookie at 34 and closer. He is doing awesome, too. 16 SV and a 1.91 ERA. Portland Beavers (34-24 .586 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Rondey Moe (27-R 6-3 3.53) vs. SF: Gordy Albrecht (26-R 4-4 5.26)

Moe had a no decision last time out, allowing 5 runs, 9 hits and 2 home runs in 5 IP. He has now allowed 11 HR in 74 IP, an alarming rate.

Brecht was acquired in a trade with San Diego in December. He was 8-14 with a 4.04 ERA for the Padres last year, but 13-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 2001. He has allowed 8 HR this season, already matching his total from last season and surpassing the 6 he allowed in 2001. He won his last start, allowing 2 runs in 8 IP. We have not faced him yet this season. He was 1-2 against us with the Padres last year, but only had one bad game.

Yesterday was an off day for the team, but I was inundated with offers from other GMs for RP Bill Moon (26-R), who we recently sent back to Vancouver (A). The trade deadline is 3 days away and I have no idea why everyone is so keen on him now. Most of these offers were of players that we had no use for, but Houston made an offer that I am actually going to accept.

Trade #41
RP Bill Moon (26-R) to Houston for SP Bill Ancona (23-L).

Ancona was drafted in the 4th round of this Year's B Leagues Draft. He's a pitch to contact sort who sometimes lets the contact go over the fence, but he has 3 solid pitches and great control and stamina and is a hard worker and a lefty. He has had decent stats for Houston this year, but we are sending him to Vancouver (A) for now.

Also, RP Denny Jennissen (29-R) has begun a rehab assignment at Vancouver, so we should have our Bullpen back to full staffing before too long. He pitches 2 scoreless innings for the Mounties yesterday.

We are in Salt Lake City to play the lowly Bees a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games here to Milwaukee by the scores of 9 to 1 and 11 to 2. They have lost 7 of their last 8 and 13 of their last 15. They are currently tied with Cincinnati for the worst record in Baseball. This is our first meeting of the season. We were 4-4 against them last year and 3-5 in 2001, when they won 94 games. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.52 runs per game (Portland is 2nd with 4.85). They are 2nd to last in HR (29), even though they play in a park conducive to hitting home runs. We are 9th with 40. The Bees are last in fewest runs allowed with 5.16 per game (Portland is down to 3rd with 3.42 after that pasting by the Seals). Their run differential is -95, the worst in Baseball, and ours +84, now 2nd best to Dallas by 4 runs. Hopefully, this will be a fun weekend.

Portland Beavers (34-25 .576 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Salt Lake City Bees (16-42 .276 24.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

The San Diego Padres are in last place in the West, but they are as close to 1st place as Salt Lake City is to 7th (11 G)...

POR: Steve Muir (28-R 9-1 2.87) Gold Glove(01) vs. SLC: Danny Hanlon (26-R 2-3 3.89) Rookie

Muir still has not lost since April 14, even though he allowed 5 runs last time out. A crappy Bullpen effort cost him a pair of runs and I stuck with him a little too long trying to extend his CG streak.

Hanlon is a rookie who started the season in A Ball with Cleveland at Indianapolis, but was traded to the Bees on May 17 and is now their #1 starter. He has walked more and he has struck out, but seems to be miles above every one else they have sent out there. He was drafted in the 4th round of the 2001 B Leagues Draft. He pitched a no hitter in A Ball last season.

Through 5 innings, each team has 2 hits and no runs...

Top of the Seventh:

Glenn Snowden lines a hit to right. Tim Higbee doubles off the wall in left center. With the infield in, Reid Reddick grounds one through the left side and Snowden scores. Higbee heads home and Steve Rizkallah throws the ball in a different area code for an error, allowing Reddick to go to 2nd. 2 to 0, Beavers! With 1 out, Juan Rojas beats out an infield hit. P Steve Muir swings away and grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the Ninth:
Tom Page leads off with a triple to left center... Jim Jaeger pops out to center, but Jack Hinckley drops the ball and Page scores... 2 to 1, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Jon Weekley (27-R). Duane Bailey bloops a hit to right center and Jaeger goes to 3rd... What has happened to our Bullpen? They suddenly cannot get anyone out... Cliff Clement grounds a hit to right and Jaeger scores and Bailey goes to 3rd... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Still no outs... Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (29-L), who gave up the Grand Slam his last time on the mound... Melvin Rodarte beats out an infield hit and Bailey scores...

5 straight batters reach in the bottom of the 9th...
Not a fun start to the weekend...

We had 8 hits and made 1 error

RHP Jon Weekley (L 0-1 BS 1) did not retire a batter and allowed 1 run and 2 hits.
LHP Victor Alvarez did not retire a batter for the 2nd game in a row. He faced 1 batter and gave up a hit.

I am not superstitious, but yesterday it was Friday the 13th in Japan, where I was born, and we blew a lead in the 9th....
Neither team has any players born in Utah, but the Bees were born here as a team, so I guess the bad luck should be on them today. We'll see....

The Bees made a trade last night, sending LF Bill Wightman (35-L), who was making $610,000 as a mostly pinch-hitter, and a 2.5 star 3B prospect to Brooklyn for a pair of 2.5 star prospects, including SS Gus Pellecer (24-L), who they plan on adding to the Major League roster, I think. Wightman had 28 HR and 98 RBI for Dallas last year. The Bees signed him as a free agent in March.

Portland Beavers (34-26 .567 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Salt Lake City Bees (17-42 .288 23.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 4-6 3.12) vs. SLC: Jack Hill (22-L 2-4 4.67) Rookie

Johnson has not won a game since May 19. He only allowed 2 runs (1 earned) and 4 hits and a walk in 7 IP last time out, but lost anyway because we only scored 1 run.

Hill was claimed off waivers from San Antonio on May 8. He has lost his last 4 starts, though one was decent. He gave up 5 runs in 3 IP his last time out against his old team.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS DEF)
PORTLAND
1: LF Jack Hinckley (27-R .250-100-0-4-.669 106)
2: CF Esteban Mondolfo (31-R .273-11-0-0-.545 77)
3: RF A.J. Lee (23-R .282-117-2-14-.720 80)

9: P Bobby Johnson (24-R .160-25-0-1-.394 1)

SALT LAKE CITY
1: 2B Frankie Clontz (28-L .224-165-0-14-.576 60)
2: LF Steve Rizkallah (32-R .237-236-1-15-.581 80) All-Star(01)

8: C Kerry Taylor (26-L .250-28-0-0-.644 70) Rookie
9: P Jack Hill (22-L .100-10-0-0-.200 39) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Jarry Park
Weather: 70 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing right to left
Attendance: 19,036

Top of the First:

Jack Hinckley pops out to center. Esteban Mondolfo walks on 4 pitches. This is not a battery to try to run on... A.J. Lee pops out to short. Glenn Snowden lines a hit to center. Tin Higbee lines out hard to left...

Bottom of the First:
Frankie Clontz drives one to deep center, but Esteban Mondolfo runs it down! Steve Rizkallah doubles off the center field wall... Tom Page grounds out to the pitcher and Rizkallah goes to 3rd. Jim Jaeger grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Third:
Kerry Taylor walks. P Jack Hill bunts him to 2nd. Frankie Clontz beats out an infield hit. He gets caught stealing! Steve Rizkallah grounds out to short!

Deja vu.... Just like yesterday, each team only has 2 hits and no runs through 5 innings... This is not proving to be a very fun weekend....

Bottom of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Steve Rizkallah lines a hit to center. Tom Page doubles to right center and Rizkallah scores and Page ends up on 3rd... 1 to 0, Bees. This team only won 16 games before we came to town! Now, they are looking like world beaters... The Bullpen is up. We walk Jim Jaeger intentionally... Duane Bailey, of course, grounds a hit to center and Page scores... 2 to 0, Bees. Cliff Clement grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.

Top of the Seventh:

Juan Rojas grounds a hit to right. PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) draws a walk. Jack Hinckley grounds into a force at 2nd, 6u, and Rojas goes to 3rd. Esteban Mondolfo up. C Kerry Taylor tries to pick Hinckley off at 1st and throws the ball away for an error and Rojas scores! 2 to 1, Bees. Mondolfo walks. A.J. Lee swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Hinckley goes to 3rd. 2 outs. They make a pitching change and bring in a lefty to face Glenn Snowden, which is insanity. He is batting .458 with a 1.313 OPS against lefties... But I bet you he makes an out now... New Pitcher: Andy Braught (26-L), a rookie with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP in 8 IP with a HR allowed, to boot. Snowden does NOT make an out! He lines a hit to right and Hinckley scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2. Tim Higbee strikes out...

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Roy Huls (22-R). Frankie Clontz draws a walk... Steve Rizkallah grounds a hit to center and Clontz goes to 3rd... Why am I doing this to myself? I could be sitting at home and making pretty sand mosaics.... Tom Page grounds a hit to center and Clontz scores and Rizkallah goes to 3rd... 3 to 2, Bees. Page steals 2nd... We walk Jim Jaeger intentionally again... Has this strategy been working for us? Duane Bailey flies out to center and Rizkallah tags up and scores. 4 to 2, Bees. Cliff Clement strikes out. Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (29-L), who has not gotten a batter out in his last 2 outings.... I figure he is due... And we are bringing him in to face Melvin Rodarte, the fella who beat him for a hit to win the game yesterday.... And I am calling someone else stupid... Rodarte swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Chris Beltran (34-R), their closer with a 4.19 ERA. 5 SV and 3 losses. 2 HR in 19.1 IP. They traded for him from Denver this winter. For the Bears last year, he had 28 SV and 14 losses, but pitching in Denver, we can excuse some ugly numbers... With 2 outs, Glenn Snowden lines a hit to right and Gold Glover Duane Bailey overruns the ball for an error. Tim Higbee grounds out to 2nd....

Lost - 4 to 2

I am embarrassed....

We had 6 hits off the worst pitching staff in the world and made no errors
Salt Lake City and 7 hits and made 3 errors

They walked 7 of our batters and made 3 errors and we could not get more than 2 runs...

Bobby Johnson went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. At bat, he drew a walk.
LHP Vic Kyzer pitched a perfect inning.
RHP Roy Huls (L 2-4) continues his slide into oblivion... He got 2 outs, allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1. In his last 7 appearances, he has allowed 7 runs in 3.1 IP....
LHP Victor Alvarez faced 1 batter and retired him.

Jack Hill went 6.2 innings, gave us 2 runs, 3 hits, 6 walks and struck out 4. 121 pitches.
RHP Garry Roger (W 4-1) get the win for the 2nd day in a row. He went 1 scoreless inning, gave us 1 hit and 1 walk (INT).
RHP Chris Beltran (SV 6) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit.

CF Esteban Mondolfo had 2 walks. 1B Glenn Snowden had 3 hits and an RBI. 3B Dave Risinger had a hit and a walk and stole 2 bases. 2B Juan Rojas had 2 hits with a double (only his 2nd of the year!), drew a walk and scored a run. PH Oscar Trejo drew a walk. PH Jerry Suazo was walked intentionally.

For Salt Lake City, LF Steve Rizkallah had 3 hits with a double and scored 2 runs.

Portland Beavers (34-27 .557 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Salt Lake City Bees (18-42 .300 22.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Flores (24-R 8-3 2.82) vs. SLC: Leon Avendano (32-L 4-6 5.05)

Flores gave up 1 run and 5 hits in 8 IP at San Francisco, the best hitting team in the League, last time out. Can we beat the worst team in the League? No one else has been able to yet...

Avendano was 14-12 with a 3.83 ERA for Montreal last season. He signed as a free agent with Sacramento, but they lost him to Salt lake City on the waiver wire. He gave up 5 runs in 5 IP last time out and lost. We have never faced him. A.J. Lee, who was with Baltimore in the NL, has faced him and is 1 for 2. Avendano is pitching on short rest today.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS DEF)

9: P Leon Avendano (32-L .095-21-0-2-.269 34)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Jarry Park
Weather: 70 F, Rain, with an 8 MPH wind blowing right to left
Attendance: 17,681

Top of the First:
Jack Hinckley swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Esteban Mondolfo lines a hit to right. A.J. Lee grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Glenn Snowden grounds out to 2nd...

Bottom of the First:
Cliff Clement flies out to deep right. Steve Rizkallah flies out to right. Tom Page flies out to deep left! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Third:
Gus Pellecer, in his first AB as a Bee, grounds a hit to center and then steals 2nd. P Leon Avendano bunts him to 3rd. Cliff Clement flies out to right and Pellecer tags up and scores. 1 to 0, Bees.

Bottom of the Fourth:

Tom Page leads off with a single, goes to 2nd on a ground out and then steals 3rd. Duane Bailey strikes out. Melvin Rodarte strikes out looking!

Once again, through 5 innings, we cannot score off this awesome pitching staff....

Nor through 6....

Bottom of the Sixth:
Steve Rizkallah takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. The Bullpen is roused. With Rizkallah on the move, Tom Page swings and misses a 3-2 pitch. Rizkallah is safe at 2nd with a stolen base. We walk Jim Jaeger intentionally... Rizkallah steals 3rd. Duane Bailey grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Rizkallah scores... 2 to 0, Bees.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Armando Ortiz (36-L) with a 7.47 ERA on the year, but 15.43 for Salt Lake City since they claimed him off waivers from Toronto. 9 H in 4.2 IP with 4 BB and 1 SO for the Bees. If he pitches a shutout inning, I will eat my hat.... Jack Hinckley leads off with a double to left center. Esteban Mondolfo grounds out to short, but Hinckley makes it to 3rd. A.J. Lee strikes out looking... Trudy, do you have a hat? Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to center and Hinckley scores! 2 to 1, Bees. They make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Garry Roger (23-R), the fella who got the win in each of the first two games of this series. So, I guess that means we will score another run somehow and then our Bullpen will blow another lead to get Roger another win... Tim Higbee draws a walk. PH Carlos Lopez (28-L) grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Chris Beltran (34-R), their closer, who's ERA is only under 4 because he pitched a scoreless inning against us yesterday to get a Save. 7-8-9 up for us... We go down 1-2-3.... This is utter ridiculousness.... Milwaukee scored 20 runs in 2 games here and we have 5 runs total in 3 games....

Lost - 2 to 1

We had 9 hits and made no errors
Salt Lake City had 5 hits and made no errors

Frank Flores (L 8-4) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. He threw a WP.
Rich Larkin went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Luis Avendano (W 5-6) went 5.1 shutout innings, gave us 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Chris Beltran (SV 7) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

LF/RF Jack Hinckley had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored our run. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits and our RBI. 3B/SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits.

Around the League: San Antonio traded their All-Star closer, Tim Perry (30-R), and a 2.5 star prospect to San Francisco for 2 star prospect 1B San Dearmon (24-L). He is also a dumb slacker that the Seals got off the waiver wire in January... I cry foul! The Missions did not ask me if I wanted Perry! He has 11 SV and no losses with a 1.11 ERA in 24.1 IP with 0 HR, only 5 BB and 29 SO....

Today is the Trading Deadline. I would like to get an outfielder, but I have not yet been able to find a decent one available that we can get without giving up the house.

Portland Beavers (34-28 .548 in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Salt Lake City Bees (19-42 .311 21.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL East)

Are we going to get swept by the Bad News Bees?

POR: Rondey Moe (27-R 6-4 3.59) vs. SLC: Charlie Banuelos (24-L 1-6 6.11) Rookie

Moe did not give up a home run at San Francisco in his last start, but lost anyway with 3 R and 9 H in 6.1 IP.

Banuelos was claimed off the waiver wire in February. He is pitching on short rest, but he only went 2.1 IP in his last outing and gave up 6 R and 2 HR, so he is rested plenty. If this bum shuts us down today, I am taking an extended vacation from Baseball and concentrate on augmenting my pressed flower collection....

Jack Hinckley fouls out to the catcher... Juan Rojas flies out to deep center. A.J. Lee swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short... My stomach hurts...

Bottom of the First:
Cliff Clement swings at the first pitch and doubles over the head of the center fielder... Steve Rizkallah grounds out to 3rd. Jim Jaeger takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Duane Bailey pops out to center. Frankie Clontz swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to left!

Bottom of the Fourth:
After Rondey Moe strikes out Gus Pellecer to end the inning, he goes to Trudy the Trainer and she says his day is done....

Top of the Fifth:
PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) hits a home run to center, 439 ft! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Victor Alvarez (29-L). Jose Julio (29-R), who pinch-hit last inning, is in to play left, Jack Hinckley moves to right and A.J. Lee moves to 2nd. Frankie Clontz lines a hit to left, gets bunted to 2nd, goes to 3rd on a ground out and scores on a wild pitch.... Tie Game: 1 to 1. Gimme that paper bag... I'm sorry, Trudy. That was your lunch?....

Top of the Ninth:
The immortal Charlie Banuelos is still on the hill... 118 pitches thrown. With 2 outs, Jose Julio draws a walk. They make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Chris Beltran (34-R), their closer who has had Saves in the last 2 games. Jack Hinckley strikes out looking on 3 pitches...

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Roy Huls (22-R), beginning his second inning of work after a scoreless 8th. He's in the right spot to collect another loss for his trophy case.... Frankie Clontz grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Huls calls out Trudy.... New Pitcher: Vic Kyzer (24-L). He gets the next two out!

Extras!

We are 1-3 in extras innings, so we are due to win one!

Top of the Tenth:

We go down in order with 2 strikeouts....

Bottom of the Tenth:

Well, P Vic Kyzer is the only reliever we have who has not let us down in this series, so I guess it is his turn.... Yep... With 2 outs, Cliff Clement, batting under .200 with 0 HR, hits a home run to left....

Lost - 2 to 1

This is surreal...
Swept by the worst team in the League.
A historically bad team....
Life is no fun anymore....

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Salt Lake City had 8 hits and made no errors

We score 6 total runs in 4 games against the worst pitching staff in Baseball....

Rondey Moe went 4 shutout innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.
RHP Jon Weekley (H 3) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
LHP Victor Alvarez (BS 2) went 1 inning, allowed 1 run and 2 hits. He threw a WP.
RHP Roy Huls went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk (INT).
LHP Vic Kyzer (L 0-1) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run and struck out 1.

Charlie Banuelos, who had a 6+ ERA coming into this game, went 8.2 innings, gave us 1 run, 7 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 2.
RHP Chris Beltran (W 1-3) faced 4 batters, got them all out, striking out 3 of them.

LF/RF Jack Hinckley drew 2 walks. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits. SS Reid Reddick had 2 hits. PH Oscar Trejo hit his 4th home run of the season. I sure wish I could get him into the lineup.... The only way is to play him in left, where he is utterly terrible, or to move Glenn Snowden to 3rd, where he is utterly terrible. PH/LF Jose Julio had a hit and a walk. He is now 5 for 10 with 2 walks and begging for more playing time.

For Salt Lake City, rookie CF Cliff Clement had 3 hits with a double and a home run that won the game. They were his first 2 extra base hits of his season in his 14th game.

Now the reports from Trudy, who has been very busy this game.... She says Rondey Moe is at the hospital, but the doctors have already told her that he has a torn labrum.... He is done for the year. Roy Huls, on the other hand, only has elbow tendinitis, she says, and I perk up, thinking he will just need a few days rest and tomorrow is an off day, anyway, but she says probably 4 to 5 weeks.... This trip to Salt Lake City has been the most miserable experience of my life and I spent 40 days and nights in maximum security jail one time, surrounded by murderers and armed robbers... Well, they were not armed at the time, but they still were not fun to be around....

Yesterday, our off day, we put SP Rondey Moe (27-R) on the 60 day DL and RP Roy Huls (22-R) on the 15 day DL. We also sent RP Jeremy Head (27-R) back to Vancouver (A). We recalled RP Denny Jennissen (29-R) from his rehab assignment, where he only made one appearance, pitching 2 shutout innings. We called up up SP Bruce Ancona (23-L), who we just traded for last week. He made 1 start for the Mounties and got a win, pitching 8.2 innings and allowing 1 run. We also called up rookie RP Sandy Bastianelli (28-R). You are right to not get excited about a 28 year old rookie reliever.... We just hope he can do a better job than Jeremy Head did. He has pitched 7.2 scoreless innings for Vancouver with 3 BB and 7 SO.

We are back home for the next two weeks! The San Diego Padres are here to play a 2 game set. They swept the mighty Dallas Eagles in 4 games at home over the weekend, scoring 29 runs! We are 4-1 against them on the season and this is their first trip to Metropolitan Stadium. They are 15 in scoring in the PCL with 3.56 runs per game (Portland is down to 4th with 4.71 after our pathetic weekend in Salt Lake City). The Bees, by the way, are now last in scoring AND fewest runs allowed...yet, they swept us in 4 games... The Padres are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.43 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.38). Their run differential is -53 and ours is +79, now the best in Baseball, because Dallas got whooped worse than we did over the weekend. Us and San Francisco are the only 2 teams in the PCL West with plus differentials, yet neither of us is in first place...

San Diego Padres (26-35 .426 8.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (34-29 .540 1.5 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

SD: Mike Bennett (32-L 1-6 4.95) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 9-1 2.72) Gold Glove(01)

Bennett is the 4th straight lefty we have faced. We did not do very well against the last 3. He gave up 5 runs in 3.2 IP in his last start, but got a no decision. His one win came on May 9. We faced him back in April in San Diego and scored 5 runs in 1.2 IP, but that was back when we had more than one hitter in our lineup...

Muir still has not lost since April 14. He pitched well enough to win in Salt
Lake City, but our offense was inept. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) and 4 hits in 8 IP.

Next in are the Seattle Rainiers to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just lost a pair of games in San Francisco after having won 6 in a row before that. We are 3-1 against them on the season so far and this is their first trip to Portland. They are 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.34 runs per game (Portland is up to #2 with 4.75). They lead the League SB with 72. We are 9th with 52. The Rainiers are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.63 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.34). They have allowed the 2nd most home runs with 59, 1 fewer than San Antonio (thank you, Kingdome!). We have allowed the 3rd fewest with 34, 2 more than Oakland, who has allowed the fewest. Their run differential is -9 and ours is +92, now 17 more than Dallas!

Seattle Rainiers (34-31 .523 3 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (36-29 .554 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

SEA: Vic Harrington (35-R 6-5 4.03) vs. POR: Frank Flores (24-R 8-4 2.83)

Harrington was signed as a free agent from Oakland just before the season began. He won his last start, ending a 5 game losing streak, with 1 run in 8 IP. We have faced him once this season and beat him, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits in 6.2 IP.

Flores lost his last start in Salt Lake City, but only gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 IP.

Seattle Rainiers (34-32 .515 4 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (37-29 .561 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

SEA: Bill Foley (28-R 10-3 2.83) Silver Slugger(01) vs. POR: Bruce Ancona (23-L Beaver debut) Rookie

Last year, the Rainiers played in a tough park for hitters and Foley was 8-19 with a 4.07 ERA, leading the League in losses. This year, they have moved into a park that seems to be designed just to thwart him, as his one weakness is the long ball and the Kingdome is the easiest place in the world to hit home runs. Yet, he is thriving. He has won his last 5 starts, 4 of them at home, and has pitched a CG in every one of them! In May, he had a 13 inning CG shutout! I tried to trade for him back in 2001, but could not quite get the deal done. We were the victims of the first of those CG wins in his current streak. We hit 3 home runs in the Kingdome, but only scored 3 runs.

Ancona was 3-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 4 starts (10 G) for Houston before we traded for him. Seattle is not the ideal team for him to debut against with their two big right-handed boppers....

The San Francisco Seals and their League leading offense are in town to play a 2 game set. They split 4 games at home with Sacramento over the weekend, but they are 9-2 in their last 11 games. We are 3-1 against them so far this season and this is their first trip to Portland. They lead the PCL in scoring with 5.00 runs per game (Portland is 2nd with 4.78). The Seals are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.37 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.30). They are last in CG (2) and we are tied for 2nd (12). Their run differential is +43 and ours is +102, now 28 runs better than Dallas!
