Sunday, May 6, Year I

I asked Dave Dafoe, our Scouting Director, to give me his report on the June Draft 30 days before we have to be picking. I got his report this morning, which is 29 days before the Draft. So that is how he operates, is it?

We will have the second pick in the draft, after the Baltimore Orioles, and it is very clear who we should be taking with that pick: SP Dave Murphy (18-R). He is not a big fellow (5' 11" 175 lbs), but he stands head and shoulders above every other pitcher in the class. Not only does my own statistical analysis rate him as the best, but both our own Dave Dafoe and the Scouting Combine have him listed as the best available starting pitcher.

So, probably he is who Baltimore picks....

If they do, then we will probably take OF Bob Crawford (18-R). He is the best hitter available who can also play some defense. He will be a corner outfielder in the majors and our need for outfielders is not great, but he is clearly the best of the everyday players in this class.

There is a college pitcher, Ron Dreiling (21-L) of Purdue, who looks very good and I may be tempted to take him with the second pick if Dave Murphy is chosen by Baltimore. I am a sucker for guys that throw five different pitches and Dreiling throws six!

I will have to think about it. We have quite a few outfield prospects in our minor leagues already and not very many rotation candidates coming up. If Dreiling was 22 or 23, I would not even be tempted and if he was 19 or 20, I would take him in a heart beat, but 21 is in that gray area. I will have to think about it.

I have 29 days to mull it over and rank the other 958 players who will be drafted....

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 61 F, Overcast with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Attendance: 19,221

Top of the First:
Dwight Marshall tries to bunt his way on and is out, 1-3. Roberto Rodriguez flies out to the warning track in center. Mike Francoeur grounds out to short. 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet swings at a 3-1 pitch and grounds out to 2nd. It is unmanly to walk, I guess. Jeff Schottler lines out hard to right. Gary Long grounds a hit up the middle. Jeff Austin strikes out looking....

Bottom of the Second:
Randy James leads off with a 4 pitch walk, goes to 3rd when Dennis Webb doubles to right center and, with 1 out, scores on a ground out by Dave Lesley. 1 to 0, Beavers.

Top of the Third:
After retiring the first 6 batters he faced, Frank Martin gives up a lead off double to Jerry Walker and complains of back pain... Why do they never complain when they strike someone out? Barry Chapman (26-R) goes in to pitch. He sits them down 1-2-3 with 2 strikeouts!

Bottom of the Fifth:
PH Dale Ainsworth (26-L) leads off with a hit. With 1 out, Jeff Schottler hits his first career home run to left!! 3 to 0, Beavers!!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Antoine Redd (31-R). Dwight Marshall leads off with a home run to left. 3 to 1, Beavers. Roberto Rodriguez singles and steals 2nd, goes to 3rd on a a bunt and scores on a hit by Rick Ingledue. 3 to 2, Beavers.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Randy James leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dennis Webb bunts him over to 2nd and then they intentionally walk Gordon Saunderson. Then they unintentionally walk Dave Lesley to load the bases up with 1 out. They stick with LaForce and we send up PH Howard McNeal (30-R), who hit 2 home runs yesterday. He grounds a hit threw the drawn in infield and James scores! 4 to 2, Beavers. Still LaForce is on the hill. Perry Templet pops out to 2nd... 2 outs. Jeff Schottler flies out to left.

Won - 4 to 2

6 wins in a row!
We scored more than 3 runs in a game for two games in a row; only the second time we have done that. We have yet to score more than 3 three straight games.

We had 5 hits and made 1 error
Minnesota has 6 hits and made no errors

Frank Martin went 2+ scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
RHP Barry Chapman (W 1-1) went 3 scoreless and hitless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 4.
RHP Antoine Redd (H 1) went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and struck out 1.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 2) went 3 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2.

Tom LaForce (L 1-5) went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 6 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3.

LF Jeff Schottler hit his first career home run and had 2 RBI. 3B Randy James walked twice and scored 2 runs. C Dennis Webb hit a double. PH Dale Ainsworth had a hit and scored a run. PH Howard McNeal had a hit and an RBI.

The trainer says Frank Martin's back is not serious and he should be fine by the next time his spot in the rotation comes around. That is good news!

Down on the Farm:
In his second start for Vancouver (AAA), after pitching a 4 hit shutout in his first, Dave Cole (25-R) gave up 7 runs and 9 hits in 1.2 innings. Our excitement over him has been duly tempered...

The Houston Astros are in town to play a 3 game series. They won 2 of 3 at Seattle over the weekend. We beat them in 2 games in Houston two weeks ago, but after we left town they won 8 games in a row until losing yesterday by 1 run in the bottom of the 9th. They are currently 8th in the PCL in scoring with 3.6 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 at 3.7). Each of our teams have only hit 16 home runs on the season, tied for last in the League. However, their hitters have an excuse in the Astrodome. They have only hit 2 of their 16 home runs at home. Ours have been doing better of late, though. They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.3 per game (Portland is #1 at 3.1).

Houston Astros (19-12 .613 1.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (17-12 .586 in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: Steve Fialho (28-R 4-2 2.35 ERA) vs. POR: Tom Horn (24-L 1-1 4.15 ERA) Rookie

Fialho is the Astros' #1 starter in a rotation full of #1 starters....

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 15,292

Top of the First:
Don Mosley leads off with a double to right. Bob Webster lines a hit to left and Mosley scores. 1 to 0, Astros. Bob Trigg flies out to center, Perry Templet making a nice catch. Bill Henning grounds out to short and Webster moves up to 2nd. Ed Sacco, the hottest hitter on their team, strikes out!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet grounds out to 2nd. Jeff Schottler pops out to short. Jeff Austin lines a hit to center and steals 2nd. Dale Ainsworth strikes out.

Through 5 innings, Horn has done a decent job, holding them to the 1 run, but we have not had a hit since we got one in the first inning.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, P Tom Horn reaches on an error by 3B Ed Sacco. Perry Templet and Jeff Schottler then draw back-to-back walks to load the bases up with 1 out. An excellent scoring opportunity with our #3 and #4 hitters up, you think? Jeff Austin, formerly our awesome cleanup hitter and now our awesome #3 hitter strikes out. Dale Ainsworth grounds out to the pitcher....

We load the bases up again in the Eighth inning, but still get no runs. Our awesome #3 hitter, Jeff Austin, fouled out to 1st with 2 runners on base.

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Phil DeNeui (26-R), their closer, beginning his second inning of work. He already has 10 Saves this season, but has not been mowing the hitters down. He has a 3.06 ERA. We still have not had a hit since the first inning. We go down 1-2-3, Dave Lesley taking a 3-2 pitch for strike three to end the game...

Lost - 1 to 0

As weak as our offense has been, this is the first time we have been shutout.

We had 1 hit and made no errors
Houston had 8 hits and made 2 errors

Tom Horn (L 1-2) went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and 1 intentional walk.

Steve Fialho (W 5-2) went 7.1 scoreless innings, gave us 1 hit, 5 walks and struck out 3.
RHP Phil DeNui (SV 11) pitched 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings, gave us 2 walks and struck out 1.

LF Jeff Schottler walked 3 times. 1B Jeff Austin had our only hit and stole a base. PH Gordon Saunderson drew a walk.

A rare sighting of a lefty! Only the 4th time we have faced one this season. We are 3-0 against lefties, but we have not faced one as good as Spaghetti Panighetti. He is 4th in the PCL with 38 SO. and has only walked 9 in 48.1 IP.

CF Jeff Schottler hit a double. 2B Gary Long had 2 hits and an RBI. We got a new double play combo this off season. Half of it (Long) is playing great; the other half (SS Dave Lesley) is stinking it up.

Gotta say I'm really enjoying this one! I love all the little details and I love how it's an endless stream of simulated baseball. Keep up the good work!

I wish I had another option to put out their, but Manuel Jimenez is 1 for 18 with the bat and there is no one in the minors. We will look for a trade tonight, perhaps. Bill Henning grounds a hit up the middle and 2 runs score. 2 to 0, Astros. Larry Ziegel bloops a hit to right and the bases are loaded back up and still nobody is out... Dale Ainsworth leads off with a hit and steals 2nd. With 1 out, Randy James singles to right, but Ainsworth only makes it to 3rd because he had to hold up and make sure the ball was not caught. Phil Parker grounds a hit to right and Ainsworth scores and James goes to 3rd. 3 to 1, Astros. With 2 outs, P Ron Wolf gets a hit and James scores! 3 to 2, Astros. Perry Templet lines out to center to end the inning.

Top of the Third:
With 2 outs, P Pat Porter knocks out the 5th straight hit by an Astro pitcher. It loads the bases up with 2 outs. We walked the #8 hitter intentionally to get to him.... Don Mosley, who we have not gotten out yet, flies out to deep center to end the inning.

Top of the Fifth:
Larry Ziegel draws a 4 pitch walk and the Astros have their lead off man on base for the fourth time in five innings, three of them by a walk. With 2 outs, Gary Murdock doubles him home. 4 to 2, Astros. That brings P Pat Porter to the plate with the Astros string of 5 straight hits by their pitchers on the line. He grounds out to short! And Dave Lesley does not boot it!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). With 1 out, Dave Lesley makes his 2nd error of the game and the 9th of the season... We will tolerate no more of this... He is yanked and Manuel Jimenez sent in. I don't care if he thinks I am showing him up... The very next batter, Bob Trigg, grounds one to short and you are wrong if you think Jimenez booted it! 6-4-3 double play!

Top of the Seventh:
Another 6-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the Eighth:
We finally get a little action when Jeff Schottler and Jeff Austin hit back-to-back 1 out singles. Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit to left and Schottler heads home and just beats the throw! 4 to 3, Astros. But that is all we get...

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Phil DeNeui (26-R), going for his third straight save of this series. He is reported to be suffering from the flu. C Dennis Webb leads off with a 4 pitch walk. Dave Benya (26-S) goes in to run for him. Manuel Jimenez and his 1 for 19 batting comes to the plate. He grounds out to 3rd and Benya goes to 2nd. Pinch-Hitter: Joe Harrison (35-R), our $1.7 million water boy and the last non-pitcher left on our bench. He grounds a hit to center and Benya scores!! Tie game!! 4 all. Perry Templet lines a hit to left and Harrison stops at 2nd. We pull off a double steal!!! How stupid!!! But it worked!!! Runners now at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out!! The infield is in and Jeff Schottler is at the plate. He strikes out.... 2 outs. What a bummer... Jeff Austin takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up for Dale Ainsworth, who is having the best year of anyone on the team. He grounds out to the pitcher....

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). The Astros go down in order!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Brad Hamel (23-R). Randy James draws a 1 out walk and steals 2nd. We have no bench left, so no more pinch hitters. They walk C Dave Benya intentionally to get to Miguel "1 for 20" Jimenez (and the pitcher is on deck), so this inning is over... yep, 2 strikeouts.

Top of the Eleventh:
Russ Mitchell leads off with a hit to left, but PH Rob Mullins (28-L) grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! The third Jimenez has started since coming into the game!

Bottom of the Eleventh:

And the top of our order. New Pitcher: Barry Haneke (27-R), who has allowed but 6 hits in 16.1 IP with 17 SO. He does have a loss, though, along with his 1.10 ERA. Stop the Presses! Barry Templet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! Jeff Schottler doubles to center!! Templet stops at 3rd, though. Infield is in for Jeff Austin, who pops out to very shallow center. Templet decides to risk it anyway and slides in just ahead of the tag!!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won 5 to 4, in 11 innings.

Big, Big Win! We now have still not had a losing streak of more than 2 games!
Dallas beat Los Angeles, so we are back in First Place!

We had 10 hits and made 2 errors
Houston had 8 hits and made no errors

Ron Wolf went 5 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, 5 walks (1 INT) and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 2 scoreless innings and allowed 1 hit.
RHP Barry Chapman went 2 perfect innings and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt (W 2-0) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Pat Porter went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs, 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits.
RHP Phil DeNeui (BS 2) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run, 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Barry Haneke (L 1-2) pitched the bottom of the 11th, but only got 1 out. He gave us 1 run, 1 hit and 1 walk.

LF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits and a walk and an RBI. RF Dale Ainsworth had a hit and 3 walks, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. PR/C Dave Benya scored the tying run in the bottom of the 9th and drew a walk. C Dave Webb drew the walk that put Benya on base. Much-maligned PH Joe Harrison had a hit and the RBI to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. It was his first pinch hit of the season.

Thursday, May 10, Year I

I sat down with SS Dave Lesley (26-R) and told him we were going to give him a day or two off and then start over as if a new season was beginning. The past would be forgotten and he could make a brand new start. I did this because I could not find a decent replacement anywhere. I called around to every GM that had a shortstop I would like and they all asked for the moon. Our number #1 shortstop at Vancouver is hurt and he made 2 errors in the 4 games he has played, anyway. The #2 shortstop there is a slacker and I won't have him on my team. None of the ones we have at lower levels would be able to hit a lick in the majors. Manny Jimenez (29-R) our backup here can field. Though his range is not very good, he at least will not make errors. But he is 1 for 21 at the plate. So, we will start Manny a game or two and see what he does. If he hits some, we will play him another game or two, but eventually, I am afraid we will have to go back to Dave Lesley. But let Lesley think that I have all the confidence in the world in him....

The Kansas City Royals are here to begin a 4 game series that will take us through the weekend and close out this home stand. They just won 2 of 3 in Seattle. We beat them twice in Kansas City last week, but both games were won 3 to 2. They are currently 4th in runs scored with 4.5 per game (Portland is #10 with 3.5). They are 10th in runs allowed with 4.5 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.1).

Kansas City Royals (17-15 .531 4 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (18-14 .563 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Steve Byrd (32-R 5-1 3.31 ERA) vs. POR: Terry Melton (26-R 5-2 2.33 ERA)

Byrd is their #1 starter. His only loss is to us, but he pitched well in that game.

Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 15,733

Top of the First:

Alejandro Prieto grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Joe Harrison cannot hit, but at least he can still field well. Randy Schmitt grounds out to short. That's one for Manny. Ricky Rodriguez grounds out to 3rd. 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet, who's batting average had been steadily dropping of late, strikes out looking. Jeff Schottler strikes out looking... Gary Long had better at least strike out swinging... He flies out to right.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Randy James and Dennis Webb get back-to-back singles and Joe Harrison draws a walk to load the bases up for Mighty Manny "1 for 21" Jimenez. The first pitch to him plunks him! A run is forced in! Mighty Manny! 1 to 0, Beavers! P Terry Melton then singles to right and another run is in! 2 to 0, Beavers! Perry Templet grounds into an inning ending 5-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the Third:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a hit and goes to 3rd on a double by Gary Long. He scores on a fly ball by Dale Ainsworth. 3 to 0, Beavers. Randy James singles and Long scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! Dennis Webb becomes the second Beaver to get plunked by Byrd. But Joe Harrison grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Randy Schmitt becomes the Royals' first base runner with a grounder up the middle for a hit. But Ricky Rodriguez bounces one back to the box for a 1-4-3 double play!

Through 4 innings: Royals - 1 hit; P Terry Melton - 2!!

Top of the Fifth:

My bad; I jinxed Melton. The first two batters get a hit for the Royals, but then the next three make outs!

Won - 4 to 0

Melton's 3rd Shutout of the season!! I think he has to be considered our ace now; sorry Ron Wolf.

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Kansas City had 7 hits and made no errors

Terry Melton (W 6-2) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI.

Steve Byrd (L 5-2) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 HBP and struck out 6. Both of his losses have been to us.

2B Gary Long hit 2 doubles and scored a run. 3B Randy James had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Manny Jimenez went 0 for 2 with 2 SO, but got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and thus had an RBI. He also made no errors. He will start at least one more game.

Friday, May 11, Year I

2B Gary Long needs a day off, so we are going to let Dave Lesley (26-R) try his hand there.

Kansas City Royals (17-16 .515 4 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (19-14 .576 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Len Ringstad (26-L 3-1 3.18 ERA) vs. POR: Frank Martin (26-R 3-2 2.37 ERA)

We were scheduled to face Ringstad last week, but the game was rained out. His control is a bit shaky with 5.9 BB/9, but otherwise is a tough customer. He leads the PCL with 8.4 SO/9.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
KANSAS CITY
1: SS Alejandro Prieto (26-S .194-139-2-10-.540)
2: RF Ed Gladney (31-L .263-95-1-14-.669)
3: LF Ricky Rodriguez (30-R .273-128-3-18-.757)
4: 3B Tony Olson (37-L .221-122-1-10-.637)
5: 1B Pedro Fuentes (29-R .295-122-5-18-.828)
6: 2B John Brockman (30-L .227-66-1-7-.707)
7: CF Mitch Gingrich (36-R .172-29-0-4-.433)
8: C Jose Muniz (27-R .267-101-4-16-.780)
9: P Len Ringstad (26-L .133-15-0-1-.333)

PORTLAND
1: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .262-61-1-4-.771) Rookie
2: LF Howard McNeal (30-R .287-94-4-13-.818)
3: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .323-124-2-20-.840)
4: 1B Jeff Austin (29-R .232-125-4-15-.625)
5: 3B Randy James (32-R .276-58-1-6-.701)
6: 2B Dave Lesley (26-R .198-106-0-9-.519)
7: C Dave Benya (26-S .167-18-0-0-.452)
8: SS Manuel Jimenez (29-R .043-23-0-1-.285)
9: P Frank Martin (26-S .143-14-0-1-.414)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 19,059

Top of the First:
Alejandro Prieto grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Ed Gladney strikes out looking! Ricky Rodriguez doubles to right center. Tony Olson strikes out looking!

Bottom of the First:
Jeff Schottler strikes out, but at least it was swinging... Howard McNeal grounds a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. I wish I could play 4 outfielders every day and no shortstop... 3-2 pitch to Dale Ainsworth. McNeal is on the move and Ainsworth strikes out, but McNeal is safe at 2nd. Jeff Austin grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Second:
Randy James leads off with a double and then both Dave's (Lesley and Benya) take 3-2 pitches for ball 4's to load the bases up with no outs and the Mighty Manny "1 for 23" Jimenez up to bat. He grounds one past the shortstop for a hit and James scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! After P Frank Martin strikes out, Jeff Schottler grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Top of the Fourth:
Ricky Rodriguez leads off with his second double in as many trips and then Tony Olson singles up the middle, but CF Jeff Schottler throws Rodriguez out at the plate! With 2 outs, a wild pitch sends Olson over to 2nd. John Brockman then singles him home to tie the game at 1 apiece.

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Alejandro Prieto singles, steals 2nd and scores on a double by Ed Gladney. 2 to 1, Royals.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jeff Schottler reaches on a two base throwing error by 3B Tony Olson. With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth beats out an infield hit and then steals 2nd. Jeff Austin singles to right to score both runners! 3 to 2, Beavers! Austin steals 2nd, but need not have not have risked it because Randy James hit a home run down the left field line that just stays fair!! 5 to 2, Beavers. Ringstad is pulled.

Top of the Sixth:
Tony Olson singles to lead off the inning and then Frank Martin issues back-to-back walks to load the bases up. The Bullpen is scrambled, but Martin strikes out the next two and then gets a ground ball out to escape unscathed!

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). Alejandro Prieto leads off with a double and Ed Gladney beats out and infield and then steals 2nd to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Hertzberg then follows Frank Martin's script and strikes out the next two! But before he can induce Pedro Fuentes to ground out to end the inning, he uncorks a wild pitch and Prieto scores. 5 to 3, Beavers. Fuentes then singles to left and Gladney scores. 5 to 4, Beavers. John Brockman walks on 4 pitches. Call the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R). They pinch hit for Mitch Gingrich with Julio Hernandez (28-L), who is batting ..314 on the season. 3-2 pitch is ball 4 to load the bases up. Jose Muniz pops one to shallow center and Perry Templet, who came into the game last inning, makes the catch!

Bottom of the Seventh:
On the Hill: John Curtis (31-R), beginning his second inning of work. Howard McNeal draws a walk, but Dale Ainsworth grounds into a 5-4-3 double play. Jeff Austin then homers to left! 6 to 4, Beavers!

Won - 6 to 4

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Kansas City had 13 hits and made 1 error

Frank Martin (W 4-2) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7. He threw a WP.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (H 2) went 2/3 of an inning, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. He threw a WP.
RHP Antoine Redd (H 2) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 2.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm (SV 2) pitched a scoreless 9th, allowed 1 infield hit and struck out 1.

Len Ringstad (L 3-2) went 4.1 innings, gave us 5 runs (4 earned), 7 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 6.

1B Jeff Austin had 3 hits with his 5th home run of the season, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. 3B Randy James hit a double and his 2nd home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 2B Dave Lesley hit a double and drew a walk. SS Miguel Jimenez had 2 (yes, 2!) hits and an RBI.

Saturday, May 12, Year I

Kansas City Royals (17-17 .500 4 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (20-14 .588 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Troy Levine (24-L 1-0 1.00 ERA) Rookie vs. POR: Tom Horn (24-L 1-2 3.20 ERA) Rookie

This will be Levine's second Major League start. In his first, he pitched CG 2 hitter. He's a slacker, so we need to teach him a lesson. If he does well against us, he will think that he does not have to work hard to succeed!

This is also the first time all season we have faced a lefty in back-to-back games.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
KANSAS CITY
1: SS Alejandro Prieto (26-S .203-143-2-10-.563)
2: CF Randy Schmitt (25-L .297-111-2-16-.771) Rookie
3: LF Ricky Rodriguez (30-R .278-133-3-18-.773)
4: 1B Pedro Fuentes (29-R .296-125-5-19-.828)
5: 3B Tony Olson (37-L .228-127-1-10-.643)
6: C Jose Muniz (27-R .257-105-4-16-.751)
7: RF Julio Hernandez (28-L .306-36-1-4-.776)
8: 2B Ken Morris (30-R .200-30-1-2-.633)
9: P Troy Levine (24-L .000-4-0-0-.000)

PORTLAND
1: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .246-65-1-4-.725) Rookie
2: LF Howard McNeal (30-R .286-98-4-13-.811)
3: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .320-128-2-20-.830)
4: 1B Jeff Austin (29-R .248-129-5-18-.675)
5: 2B Gary Long (32-R .319-119-3-14-.815)
6: 3B Glenn Pearce (39-R .243-70-0-5-.596)
7: C Dave Benya (26-S .158-19-0-0-.491)
8: SS Manuel Jimenez (29-R .111-27-0-2-.384)
9: P Tom Horn (24-L .000-7-0-0-.000)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 19,455

Top of the First:

Alejandro Prieto swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a big lazy fly ball to center. And P Tom Horn calls the trainer out to look at his arm.... We have to go to the Bullpen: Barry Chapman (26-R). Randy Schmitt flies out to left. Ricky Rodriguez swings at a 3-2 pitch and whiffs!

Bottom of the First:
Jeff Schottler swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Howard McNeal swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. If Dale Ainsworth swings the first pitch, I will chew him up good... He works a full count and grounds a hit up the middle! Attaboy! He gets thrown out trying to steal...

Top of the Second:
Pedro Fuentes leads off with a home run to left. 1 to 0, Royals.

Bottom of the Second:
Jeff Austin leads off with a walk and Gary Long singles. A wild pitch puts them on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Glenn Pearce grounds out to 2nd and Austin scores to tie the game at 1. Dave Benya grounds out to 3rd and Long scores. 2 to 1, Beavers.

Top of the Third:
Ken Morris leads off with a walk, steals 2nd, gets bunted to 3rd and scores on a ground out to tie the game at 2.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Jeff Austin singles and Gary Long doubles. Glenn Pearce singles and Austin scores! 3 to 2, Beavers! Dave Benya grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, but beats the relay throw to first and Long scores! 4 to 2, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Ken Morris doubles, but P Troy Levine is up next. No problem, right? Wrong. Single and Morris scores.... 4 to 3, Beavers. Alejandro Prieto then hits a home run... 5 to 4, Royals. My greed to try to get just one more out from Chapman cost us those runs...

Bottom of the Fifth:
PH Joe Harrison (35-R) absolutely crushes one to left center! 467 feet! Tie game! 5 all. New Pitcher: Jim Oien (26-R). With 1 out, Howard McNeal homers just over the fence and just fair down the left field line!!! 6 to 5, Beavers!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). There is only him and Don Schmidt (26-R) to pick and neither of them can go 4 innings, so might as well send out Wilhelm first. Randy James (32-R) comes in to play 3rd in a double switch. Ricky Rodriguez leads off with a double and with 2 outs, Jose Muniz singles him home to tie the game at 6 apiece.

Top of the Seventh:
I have Don Schmidt start warming up between innings and when Ken Morris leads off with a double, I bring him into the game. Alejandro Prieto promptly hits his second home run of the game.... 8 to 6, Royals. Randy Schmitt follows with another home run to right... 9 to 6, Royals. Well, I am not going to bring in a tired pitcher, so Schmidt will just have to suck it up and take his lumps...

Lost - 10 to 6

Well, that game screwed up all our pretty Bullpen numbers...
We scored at least 5 runs for the fourth straight game, a season high...

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Kansas City had 13 hits and made no errors

Tom Horn faced 1 batter and retired him.
RHP Barry Chapman went 4.2 innings, allowed 5 runs, 4 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk and struck out 7.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm (L 1-1, BS 1) went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt went 3 innings, allowed 3 runs, 2 home runs, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

Troy Levine went 4+ innings, gave us 5 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Jim Oien (W 1-0) went 2 innings, gave us 1 run, 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 1.

LF Howard McNeal hit his 5th home run of the season. 1B Jeff Austin had a hit and 2 walks and scored 2 runs. 2B Gary Long had 3 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. 3B Glenn Pearce had a hit and 2 RBI. C Dave Benya had no hits or walks, but had 2 RBI. PH Joe Harrison hit his 1st home run of the season.

For the Royals, SS Alejandro Prieto hit 2 home runs and had 5 RBI. He now has 4 HR on the season.

The trainer's report on P Tom Horn is a "dead" arm, whatever that is.... But he says it should be fine by the next time his spot in the rotation comes around.

Editor's Note: I have made an executive decision regarding the draft. I have decided to create the drat order rules myself. Since these are two separate leagues, they want to insure that the picks are distributed evenly between the two leagues. So the way the order will work is that the team with the worst overall record will get the first pick and the second pick will go to the team with the worst record in the other league. Each subsequent pair of picks will alternate in this manner, except that a league cannot get the first pick of a pair more than twice consecutively. The team that wins the World Series must pick last and the losing team must pick second to last, regardless of what their season record's were or the consecutive pick status of the leagues Of course, the last rule will not affect this year's draft because there has never been a World Series before.

I will also keep track of compensation manually.

We cannot do compensation like they did 1982-87, because they used draft picks and a pool of players. Tom Seaver was famously chosen from this pool by the White Sox. They also had Type C players and I am not going to manually classify all the players because that would be way too much work.

So, I will let the game set the classifications of A and B. Any team losing a type A free agent will receive the highest daft pick the signing team owns at the time of the signing, excluding the first 10 picks of the draft, plus a pick in the supplemental round after the first round is complete. Any team losing a type B free agent will only receive a pick in the supplemental round. Supplemental picks will be ordered based on the team that originated their creation. Supplemental picks can be lost based on signing a type A free agent, if one is owned at the time of signing.

For the draft in Year I, there will be no supplemental picks or compensation for free agents signed this past winter. This will not affect Portland in anyway since we did not sign any type A free agents and did not lose any free agents who were classified as type A or B and the A.I. will not complain, I am sure.

I do not think these rules will adversely affect the A.I. in any way during free agent signing season, as they are expecting to lose draft picks anyway for signing type A free agents. They just might not be losing the one they thought they would be.

Originally, the supplemental round was only for teams losing a type A free agent. They also got the first round pick of the signing team. Teams losing Type B free agents only got the first pick of the signing team and no supplemental pick. But in OOTP the A.I. is not expecting to lose a pick by signing a type B free agent, so it would be unfair to put those rules into effect.

As far as me being able to manipulate the system by signing Type A free agents quickly before any of the compensation eligible free agents I am losing sign and thus protecting my supplemental picks, I do not think that would work consistently in practice and I will not be signing many Type A free agents anyways. I hate losing draft picks and I don't like signing old players to long term contracts, so that puts me out of the bidding on most Type A free agents right from the get go.

Please comment if you think I am overlooking something or do not think my proposal is fair to the A.I.

I forgot to mention that ties for a draft pick position among teams in the same league will be resolved by head-to-head record first (team that had the lower winning percentage picking first), then division record if the two teams are in the same division and then record versus the League Champion and then record versus the next best team in the league that is not one of the teams in the tie, etc. If the records are identical against all common opponents, then a coin flip will determine the order.

For two teams in different leagues tying for a pick, whichever league had the previous first pick of a pair of picks, will pick after the other league. For the first pick in the draft, if two teams tie from each league for the worst overall record, then whichever league had the first pick in the previous season will have the second pick. This will not affect this year's draft as Baltimore had the worst overall record alone.

Kansas City Royals (18-17 .514 4 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (20-15 .571 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Don Finley (25-R 4-3 4.31 ERA) Rookie vs. POR: Lonny Tomski (27-R 0-2 4.29 ERA) Rookie

Finley was roughed up in his first two starts, but has gone 4-1 since and in his only loss in that stretch, he pitched a complete game. He has gone 8 or innings in 5 of his last 6 starts and 7 in the one he did not. We have not faced him this season.

We need Lonny Tomski to go deep into this game.

Random Fact of Week: Even with SS Dave Lesley's basket full of errors, the Beavers have committed fewer than any other team in Baseball! I wonder if there has every been a team in the history of Baseball that had the fewest errors in the League, while their shortstop led the League in the most errors. It does not seem likely, but that is where the Beavers stand today!

Tuesday, May 15, Year I

The Angels won yesterday while we were idle and they pulled themselves even with us in the standings.

Ah! Smell the grass! This will be our first game on a natural surface after 29 in a row on plastic.

We are in the City by the Bay to play the Seals a 3 game series. This will be our first meeting with them. They swept Oakland in 3 games over the weekend. They are currently 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.3 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.6). They are 3rd in HR (36) and last in SB (22). Portland is tied for 10th in HR (21) and tied for 4th in SB (38). The Seals are 6th in runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is still #1, but falling at 3.3). They have the worst BABIP in the PCL at .303 (Portland is 3rd at .267).

Portland Beavers (20-16 .556 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (19-17 .528 1 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West)

POR: Terry Melton (26-R 6-2 2.00 ERA) vs. SF: Brad Simpson (34-R 3-2 3.23 ERA)

Simpson has not been tough to hit so far this season, but he does not walk many and he keeps the ball in the park. He has only allowed 1 HR this year in 53 IP.

Melton goes after his normal 4 days of rest while Ron Wolf (27-R) will take an extra two days off to maybe make him stronger and to set our rotation with the best pitching pitcher at the head of it.

Top of the Second:
Jeff Austin leads off with a hit and steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Dennis Webb doubles him home! 1 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley follows with a single to center and Webb scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fourth:
Terry Melton is on cruise control. Lead off hitter Chris Greenwald grounds out to 1st, unassisted and Melton calls the trainer out.... He has hurt his back.... Our Bullpen is still worn out even after the day off yesterday. So we send Ron Wolf in. He retires the next two to end the inning.

Bottom of the Eighth:

Javy Vasquez leads off with a single and Leon Vosters follows with a double to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs. After PH Mike King (30-L) is announced, we make a Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). King grounds to short and the runners hold. PH Gary Halbert (28-R). Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (29-L) and his magic screwball. The infield is in....why is the infield in? The run on 3rd does not matter so much... Halbert grounds out to 1st, unassisted and the runners hold. 2 outs. Chris Greenwald, a switch-hitter, flies out to center!!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Hertzberg walks the lead off man, Terry Van Doren. PH Marcos Barron grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Chip Carpenter flies out to right. Clint Graham grounds out to 3rd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won - 2 to 0

We had 9 hits and made no errors

LHP Jerry Wilhelm (H 1) faced 1 batter and got him out.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (SV 1) went 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings and walked 1.

Brad Simpson (L 3-3-) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He threw 2 WP.

C Dennis Webb had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Dave Lesley had 3 hits with a double and an RBI and NO errors!

The trainer reported that Terry Melton has a herniated disk in his back, which has been a chronic problem for him. He is expected to be out for a week. That means another starter will be needed this weekend.

You might want to look away when the Beavers are batting, unless you have a strong stomach...

Terry Van Doren swings at the first pitch and bloops a hit to center and two runs score. 2 to 0, Seals. Chip Carpenter grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!

Through 5 innings, that 1st inning double by Gary Long is the only base runner we have had.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Javy Vasquez leads off with a hit and gets bunted over to 2nd. With 2 outs, Chris Greenwald singles him home. 3 to 0, Seals.

New Pitcher: Buddy Werner (35-L). We pull down Dennis Webb and send up rookie Jeff Schottler (24-R). He grounds out to 3rd....

Lost - 3 to 2

Four straight games of scoring 2 or fewer runs....

San Francisco had 9 hits and made no errors

Tom Horn (L 1-3) went 5 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3.

Friday, May 18, Year I

We called up P Tim Carrol (26-R) from Vancouver (AAA) to make a start tomorrow in the place of the injured Terry Melton. To make room on the roster, we waived 1B Joe Harrison and designated him for assignment. After he clears waivers, we'll put him back on the active roster and send Carrol back to Vancouver, unless he has a brilliant game and we decide to keep him.

We are in sunny San Diego to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games here with Oakland. This is the first time we have met them this season. The Padres are currently 9th in scoring with 3.5 runs per game (Portland is 10th with a lower 3.5). They are 7th in runs allowed with 3.9 per game (Portland is still #1 at 3.2, but just barely).

Portland Beavers (21-18 .538 2 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (17-22 .436 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Lonny Tomski (27-R 0-2 3.86 ERA) Rookie vs. SD: Paul Jones (25-R 4-0 3.19 ERA) Rookie

Jones is 4-0 even though he has walked twice as many as he has struck out (24 to 12). Right-handers have had a very tough time hitting him so far (.200).

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .297-145-2-20-.767)

8: SS Rance Haynes (33-R .196-102-2-5-.565)
9: P Paul Jones (25-R .150-20-0-2-.350) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Jack Murphy Stadium
Weather: 68 F, Clear Skies with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to center.
Attendance: 24,668

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit into right. Perry Templet, who is cold as ice, grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Gary Long grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Jeff Austin flies out to center.

Bottom of the First:
Hal Baumgardner grounds out to short. Mike Fahy grounds out to the pitcher. Roger Rojas strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Second:

Tony Baez leads off with a line drive to right that just clears the fence. 1 to 0, Padres.

Top of the Fourth:
Gary Long and Jeff Austin lead off with singles and Randy James walks to load the bases up with no outs. Can we score? And if we do, will it be more than one run? Gordon Saunderson grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and Long scores to tie the game at 1. Dennis Webb pops out to short... They walk Dave Lesley intentionally to get to P Lonny Tomski, who had a hit his first time up. He strikes out.... When you load the bases up with no outs, the expected runs scored are supposed to be close to 3 runs...

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Otis Smith singles and Lee Dukes draws a walk. With 2 outs, Rance Haynes bloops one over the second baseman for a hit and Smith scores. 2 to 1, Padres.

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 2 outs and the bases empty, Roger Rojas hits a home run. 3 to 1, Padres.

Top of the 9th:
Paul Jones, the starter with no stuff is still in there and we have only had 4 hits off him. Remember when Baseball America claimed we would lead our division in runs scored? Hah! PH Glenn Pearce grounds a hit into center. New Pitcher: Frank Esparza (32-R), their closer. He has walked 16 in 18.1 IP with 20 SO. Dennis Webb grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, for the first out. Dave Lesley draws a walk to put the tying run on base. Howard McNeal, who came on in a double switch earlier, strikes out... 2 down. Dale Ainsworth, who was batting .182 in May coming into today, triples to right!!! 2 runs score and the game is tied at 3!!! Perry Templet, who is colder than cold, gets walked intentionally. Gary Long grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). He gets them out 1-2-3!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Rollin Orleans (31-L), rated very highly by Dave Dafoe. With 1 out, Randy James reaches on an error by SS Ernesto Najarro, but with 2 outs, he gets caught stealing.

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). Their 3-4-5 hitters go down 1-2-3 with 2 strikeouts!

Top of the Eleventh:
Howard McNeal gets a 2 out hit and then steals 2nd. They walk lefty Dale Ainsworth intentionally to get to lefty Perry Templet, who I cannot pinch hit for, because I have no one else who can play the outfield. Besides I only have #3 catcher Phil Parker, a switch-hitter who cannot hit lefties, and Manny "3 for 30" Jimenez left on the bench. Templet grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Eleventh:
With 1 out, Butch Nelson singles. They send up Rick Haynes (34-L) to pinch hit. Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). Haynes flies out to left and then Nelson tries to steal and gets gunned down!

Top of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (28-R). Started the season in AAA and has only thrown 3.1 innings for the Padres, but has yet to give up a hit. Gary Long walks on 4 pitches, but that is all we get.

Bottom of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). He is the last reliever we have left. This is the first time I have used all 5 Bullpen arms in one game. He gets them out in order!

Top of the Thirteenth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Thirteenth:
Roger Rojas leads off with a single and steals 2nd. We walk Tony Baez intentionally. Otis Smith grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and the winning run is 90 feet from home with 1 out. C Gary Doss, a 29 year old rookie backup catcher, lines a hit to center to win the game....

Lost - 4 to 3 in 13 innings

We had 7 whole hits and made 1 error
San Diego had 10 hits and made 3 errors

You should not win ball games when you make 3 errors....
We have lost 3 games in a row for the first time this season.
Remember when we were in First Place? Both San Francisco and Los Angeles won today and now we are in sole possession of the Third spot in the division.

Lonny Tomski went 5.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. I do not think he is the answer to the question "Who should be in our starting rotation?"
RHP Antoine Redd pitched 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings, walked 1 and struck out 2.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched 1 perfect inning.
RHP Don Schmidt pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 3.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm faced 2 batters and got them both out.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (L 1-1) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits and an intentional walk.

Paul Jones went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Danny Gilmore (W 1-0) pitched 2 scoreless, hitless innings, walked 1 and struck out 1. He has now pitched 5.1 hitless innings since being called up from AAA.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits with a super clutch triple and an intentional walk and 2 RBI. PH Glenn Pearce had a hit.

Saturday, May 19, Year I

Our trainer gave me some bad news today. P Terry Melton is not responding to treatment and it will probably be next weekend before he can pitch.

P Lonny Tomski (27-R) was optioned to Vancouver (AAA) and P Tony Kelley (26-R) was recalled to Portland. To make room for him on the 40 man roster, we transferred CF Buddy French to the 60 day DL.

Whichever of the two new pitchers, Kelley or Tim Carrol (26-R) pitches better will stay when Terry Melton is ready to pitch again and the other will go back to Vancouver. If they both stink, we will try someone else.

Portland Beavers (21-19 .525 3 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (18-22 .450 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 4-2 4.11 ERA) vs. SD: Mike Nackley (26-L 4-4 2.60 ERA)

Nackley is their Ace and one of the best pitchers in Baseball. He is tied with our own Terry Melton for the PCL lead in CG with 4 and he leads the league with 52 SO. On April 13, he pitched a 2 hit shutout against the Seals, walking 5 and striking out 12. The Padres have him signed through Year VII.

Dale Ainsworth grounds out to second. Jeff Schottler grounds out to short. Gary Long pops out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:
Hal Baumgardner grounds out to 2nd. Mike Fahy grounds out to the pitcher. Roger Rojas flies out to center. 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Second:
With 2 outs, 2B Gary Long makes a 2 base throwing error, his first error of the season. But the next batter flies out!

Top of the Fifth:

Nothing but goose eggs, so far. With 2 outs, Dave Lesley beats out an infield hit and then P Ron Wolf doubles! Lesley has to stop at 3rd, but Dale Ainsworth singles up the middle to score a run! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Schottler lines out to center to end the inning.

Bottom of the Fifth:
David Shropshire leads off with a home run to center to tie the game at 1.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Tony Baez doubles. Otis Smith then lines one to right over Dale Ainsworth's head, but he runs back and makes an unbelievable catch to save a run!

Top of the Seventh:
We let P Ron Wolf bat because our Bullpen is all gassed from yesterday and he strikes out. With 2 outs, Dale Ainsworth draws a walk. 1-2 pitch to Jeff Schottler and he triples to right center, scoring Ainsworth! 2 to 1, Beavers! Gary Long grounds out to second to end the inning.

Top of the 9th:
With 1 out, Jeff Schottler singles. Gary Long grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Jeff Austin doubles over the center fielder's head and Long scores! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Roger Rojas leads off with a walk. Tony Baez hits a fly ball to right, but Dale Ainsworth drops it....E-9... Call to the worn out Bullpen: LHP Jerry Wilhelm (32--L). They send up PH Butch Nelson (25-R). He flies out to deep left. 1 out. Another pinch-hitter: Ernie McGuire (34-R). Call to the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R), because he is the least gassed of the bunch. Perry Templet (23-L) comes in to play center on a double switch and Jeff Schottler moves to left. McGuire flies out to deep right and Rojas moves to 3rd. 2 out. Pinch-hitter: Pedro de Jesus (25-L), hitting .345 on the season (10 for 29). He grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors
San Diego had 5 hits and made no errors

Ron Wolf (W 5-2) went 8+ innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he hit a double.
