The San Diego Padres are here to play 4 games through the weekend. They just swept Seattle in 3 games at home. We are 5-1 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the last time they were in the Skydome, April 15-17. Mike Nackley just pitched yesterday, so it appears that we will miss him this series. The Padres are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.23 runs per game (Portland is 8th with 3.76). They are tied for 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.86 per game (Portland is still #1, barely, with 3.08).

San Diego Padres (37-28 .568 3 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at

SD: Paul Jones (26-R 5-4 3.97) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 3-2 2.32) All-Star

We won in extra innings the only time we have faced Jones this season. He gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 4 hits and 1 walk and in 6 IP.

Panighetti won his first game in over 6 weeks the last time out, pitching a 3 hit shutout. He has only allowed 2 runs total in his last 3 starts, going 25 innings.

Saturday, June 15, Year II

Today is the trading deadline and the Baltimore Orioles have offered us a decent second baseman for P Angel Gaspar. Why they think we need a second baseman is beyond me. We are not going to make any more trades this season.

The Padres made a trade with Cleveland, acquiring RP Oscar Soto (30-R) for a mediocre catching prospect. Soto has a 3.18 ERA in 28.1 IP.

San Diego Padres (38-29 .567 3 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (40-25 .615 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Javier Reyna (33-R 6-4 3.16) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 2-2 3.75) Rookie

We are 1-1 when facing Reyna this season, but have scored 10 runs in 11.1 innings off him.

Gaspar has had back-to-back starts where he allowed 2 runs in 7.2 innings. He only got 1 win, though. Last time out, he set the Beaver record with 10 K's and only walked 1.

Random Fact of Week:
The Washington Senators had the worst record in Baseball last year (64-98 .395 37 GB). They started this season off 2-7 (.222). Since then, they are 45-13 (.776)!! They have played very well in close games: 16-3 (.842) in 1 run games and 5-1 (.833) in extra innings. But they are 2nd in scoring in the NL and 1st in fewest runs allowed, so it is not being done with smoke and mirrors.

Saturday, June 22, Year II

P Frank Martin (27-R), our #1 starter, was put on the Disabled List and P Lonny Tomski (28-R) was recalled from Vancouver (AAA).

Seattle Rainiers (25-47 .347 20.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (45-26 .634 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SEA: Jim Alexander (26-L Major League debut) Rookie vs. POR: Dave Shoemake (27-R 2-0 1.61)

Alexander walked more than he struck out in the minors this season before being called up. Christy the PA has me rigged up with a special pair of gloves that protect my knuckles while allowing me to write so that I will not hurt myself too bad when we fail to score off this bum....

Shoemake has had 3 starts. 2 were complete games where he only allowed 1 total run, but the other was a stinker. The stinker was against Seattle...

We are in Los Angeles to play 4 games in 3 days with a double header today. We are in the middle of a stretch of 20 days without a day off. We won't get a break until the All-Star Game. The Angels were just swept in 3 games here over the weekend by the Padres. We are 2-4 against Los Angeles on the season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were here, April 19-21. They are 11th in scoring with 3.40 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 with 4.03!). We are averaging 5.27 runs per game in June! June is OUR month! The Angels are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.81 per game (Portland is still #1 with 2.97). We have allowed 2.48 runs per game in June!

Portland Beavers (47-26 .644 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

Game One

Sanders is 2-0 in his last 3 starts. Before that he lost 7 in a row in 8 starts. Only once during that stretch did the Angels score more than 2 runs for him and then only 4 in the 1 game he had a no decision. He is 2-0 against us, both games back in April, when he was the PCL Pitcher of the Month. He gave us 1 run in 17 IP.

Grigg allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 7 innings in his last start and struck out a season high 5.

P Lonny Tomski (28-R) has been sent back to Vancouver (AAA) and P Larry Smith (27-R) has been recalled. He has had one start for Portland and it was a CG shutout, so he deserves another.

We are in Kansas City to play a 4 game series through the weekend. The Royals just dropped 2 of 3 here to the Astros. We are 1-3 against them this season and split a pair of games the first time we came here, April 9-10. The Royals are 2nd in the PCL in scoring with 4.59 runs per game (Portland is up to 5th with 4.12). Even though they play in a tough park to hit home runs in, they are 2nd in the PCL in HR with 78, only 1 shy of Seattle, who play in an easy park for HR. They are 2nd to Denver in scoring and I think it is safe to say that the Royals are the best hitting team in the PCL this year so far. They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.91 per game (Portland us still clinging to 1st with 3.09). Without 2 of our top starting pitchers for the next five weeks, we will probably not hold the top stop for much longer. The Royals lead the League in fewest HR allowed with only 35 given up. They still have the highest payroll in Baseball.

Portland Beavers (49-28 .636 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Kansas City Royals (40-36 .526 6.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Dave Shoemake (27-R 3-0 1.72) Rookie vs. KC: John Wolters (25-R 6-2 3.36) Rookie

Wolters control is not the best (3.6 BB/9), but other than that, he has been excellent this season. He is 2-0 against us, allowing us 1 run each time.

Shoemake has thrown 3 CG in his first 4 starts. I think he is due for an ERA correction outing....

I hurt my bum when I fell off the chair at the counter at the bar here. Thankfully Dr. Schwartz was around to help me... to another beer to make me forget the horrible thought of sending Tommyboy away!

Can't hurt to make a note of that guy though and check back in five years where he's on the path to All-Stardom with your least favorite rivals.
