Former Rays 1B James Loney has found a new home - signing a minor-league deal with the Padres.

Looks like an "issue" with scouting rather than free agency. The game feels his skill set will not result in any sort of career.

Well, considering that he signed a minor-league deal with the Padres, I'd say there's nothing wrong.

He's 31. How much of a future career are you expecting? |

Depends on avoid K, defence, and other things. Contact is solid, but I mean the other skills are meh for 1B.

League minimum it is. Loney is playing for the league minimum right now.

shocking...but in our little OOTP world, he has really good contact, and therefore should be able to make a decent two hole hitter if he can avoid too many strikeouts. Replace Loney's name with "Player X"

The truth is though...in today's MLB players are falling off the cliff faster and faster in their early 30's. It may have to do with the PED policy in place I'm sure.
In fact, a new CBA is upcoming in the off season, and it's my belief we will see financial changes as a result. Young productive players are underpaid, while older declining players are overpaid. I believe there will be changes to award those who are performing in their prime. Arbitration is probably an outdated system, and it would make sense to me, that after three years under club control, rather than being arbitration eligible, players would become something similar to the NFL system (restricted FA) or even an outright FA...however that would really hurt smaller clubs. The best solution would likely be a salary cap, but you know darn well the MLBPA will never go for it. |
