Frank Owen 1901
For most of the year, Owen was the 1906 White Sox #1 starter. That changed in the postseason as young Ed Walsh emerged as the best pitcher on Chicago's roster.

George Rohe 1901
Though relegated to utility infielder for most of the regular season, Rohe was one of the top offensive weapons for the White Sox in the World Series. When all was said and done, he drove in 4 runs and hit 2 triples, batting .333 as the Chicago White Sox took home the championship.

Frank E. Smith 1904
1906 was not kind to Smith. He lost his spot in the starting rotation through a series of ineffective starts, won only 5 games, and was not used in the World Series. He had a very good 1907 season, though, winning 23 games.

Babe Towne 1906
Rookie backup catcher Towne statistically looked like a good player, hitting .278 in 36 at bats and an OPS+ of 114. I guess the White Sox thought differently as he never played again in the big leagues.

Hughie Jennings 1891
Though there are many photos of Jennings, few are from his time with the Baltimore Orioles. This one is from 1895 and is currently being offered for sale at Heritage Auctions.

Sometimes you just have to be patient. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Courtesy of the machine that is the Topps Vault on ebay...

Nick Altrock 1898
It was requested of me to post more of the 1906 World Series teams, so Altrock is next. He was the #2 starting pitcher for the White Sox and amazingly gave up zero home runs in over 287 innings pitched on the year.

George S. Davis 1890
If the 1906 White Sox had an MVP it would likely be Davis. He lead the team with 80 RBI's, played the shortstop position at a high level, and hit .308 with 6 RBI's in the World Series. Not bad for a 35 year old veteran.

Jiggs Donahue 1900
A tall and rangy first baseman for the 1906 White Sox, Donahue wasn't a particularly strong hitter but he was durable and was a pretty good fielder. He batted .278 in the World Series and 3 of his 5 hits went for extra bases.

Patsy Dougherty 1902
A star for the Boston Americans team that won the first World Series, Dougherty got traded to the White Sox in order to provide extra outfield help and found himself in another postseason. He didn't do a lot offensively in the 1906 World Series, but he became the White Sox regular Left Fielder for the next several seasons.

Hub Hart 1905
Seldom used backup catcher for the 1906 White Sox, Hart had to play most of his games down the stretch as injuries took their toll on the catching unit as a whole. He did not play in the World Series, however.

Frank Isbell 1898
The regular second baseman for the 1906 White Sox, Isbell led the team in batting average at .279 and also contributed offensively in the World Series hitting .308 with 4 RBI's.

Fielder Jones 1896
Already a 10 year veteran, Jones was winding down as a player but made a big contribution by doubling as manager and drawing 83 walks. He must have been occupied with the managing aspect of the game in the World Series as he hit only .143.

Roy Patterson 1901
As the 5th starter on a deep pitching rotation, Patterson wasn't called upon to pitch in the World Series even though he was their longest tenured pitcher. He did contribute 10 wins with a 2.09 ERA during the season.

Frank Roth 1903
Roth was purchased from the minor leagues in early September to help the catching unit for the 1906 White Sox. Apparently there were numerous injuries and he got into 16 games while batting a paltry .196. He didn't get into any World Series games.

Lee Tannehill 1903
If there was an offensive weak spot for the 1906 White Sox, it was at third base. Tannehill was very good defensively, but he could not hit to save his life ending up at .183 with no homers and only 33 RBI's in 116 games. He got temporarily benched in the World Series ending up with only 9 at bats.

Ed Walsh 1904
Walsh became a star in 1906 when he developed absolutely unhittable stuff as the #3 starting pitcher for the White Sox. He destroyed the Cubs in the World Series, winning 2 games and striking out 17 batters.

Doc White 1901
Last, but certainly not least, is Doc White. He was probably the best lefty the 1906 White Sox had and went 18-6 on the year with a 1.52 ERA. He won 1 game and save 1 in the World Series.

Maury Wills 1959
Love this shot which I just added to the home museum, not certain why - possibly because you don't see a lot of images of Wills in portrait or at least non-action during his original incarnation with the Dodgers.
And of course that's Curt Gowdy interviewing him in his first year as the play-by-play man on the then-brand new NBC Game of the Week, 1966. The two would later become colleagues on the NBC Baseball team in the '70s. Oh by the way, if I'd known we were getting rid of you-know-who I wouldn't have wasted all that time moronically removing most of my images ;-) If anybody comes across a dead post and doesn't have the image, message me and I'll try to re-post. And thanks for all the kind words. Happy to be back. |
