Would You rather…?

When Starting a new online league would you rather begin at the inaugural draft with no player history or pick up a team with a few seasons of history? Perhaps a combo? A FA draft after all players have been released.

I picked the draft... BUT, I also think it would take forever to get through it. Even drafting 2 rounds a night, 30 nights=60 rounds? That is ML and AAA rosters, no lower minors. I have always wondered how this is handled in online leagues. I have always taken over teams with a history.

We completed our Draft in just over 2 weeks. We manually drafted 40 rounds and auto'd the rest using in-game lists. It actually wasn't that painful of a process. We used a rolling timer so things could move really quickly at some points when you had a handful of guys online at the same time.

So far the surprising majority is starting with an established team with history. That's what got my vote but I thought I was a few.

I simmed five seasons of history then the teams were handed out at random.

I have always hated inaugural drafts as a team owner and I was not about to do it as a commish even though the league only has 12 teams.

just asking for more ideas, but what is another way to assign teams other than random? A contest, first come first serve, money?

If I was to start a league, I'd want people to be attached to their teams. So I would want them to choose their team. I just wouldn't want them to pick a team just because it had the best players. Maybe introduce the teams and not reveal anything else?

Inaugural drafts are challenging. But there are some advantages:

1. You get to define your team right from the beginning
2. The GM's who are not going to stick long term may be weeded out in the process. So, the ones left might just be the best GM's.
3. For me it's one of the most dynamic and challenging components, drafting all of your players.

Having a cut off where lists can be used also works. Thirty rounds or so and then for the die hard GM's let them submit a list. Shortens up the work for those who have limited patience for a draft yet allows hard core drafters to work as long as they like at it.

by the way J Peters (above) that Omaha team is my old team. Go Nighthawks!

Oh cool, you were Ann Arbor? Hopefully we are good in a few years as I have gutted the team for prospects(sorry). I am excited about our future in the USoB.
