It's to stop caddies lining a golfers shot up, it's easier for a caddie standing say 10ft away than it is for a golfer standing over the ball to line a shot up.

How does he line it up if the caddy is behind the putter?

Rule 10.2b was created because of longtime criticism that caddies were helping to align players on shots. The rule stated that caddies could not deliberately stand behind their players as they were starting to take their stance until the shot was hit. |

You can technically be behind the golfer while still having a line on the hole. The angles are much better well behind the ball for reading the green and the rule is to prevent the caddy from helping the golfer while they are physically lining up the shot.

I'm not still not getting it. Guess that's my stupidity. Maybe I need to search for a visual aid.

The caddy can get a better visual angle than you from further back. You can of course do this yourself by walking back there. But once you go back to the ball that visual is lost. If the Caddy is there you can adjust. They've been doing this for years and just about every amateur golfer with a good caddy does this and has done this since forever. Caddies do this to get better tips. |

This is as good as I can find. He can't help line up the shot once the player addresses the ball.
