At St. Louis (July 27, 28, 29, and 30)

The team arrived the next day at Union Station in St. Louis, ready to face the league-leading Cardinals. Despite the Phillies good run of play in July, they remained well out of first place as the Cards, at 65-20, had kept up a historically torrid pace. Now, they would have a chance to cut into the 17½-game deficit with five games at Sportsman’s Park.

Mathis had the mound on the first game of a doubleheader on their first day in town. In the top of the first, Josh Gibson’s single drove in Murtaugh to give the Phillies a quick lead. Mathis was sharp, and Brown and Estalella each drove in a run in the sixth to make it 3-0. St. Louis got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Stan Musial making it 3-1, but the Phillies got three more in the next inning to go up 6-1 and end starter Harry Breechen’s day. Estalella’s second error of the day gave the Cardinals their second run, but that was all they got. Mathis went the distance, and the Phillies won 7-2.

Paige started game two, but there would be no no-hitter this time as Lou Klein doubled off him in the first, but did not score. Neither team threatened to score until the fourth, when Brown was safe on an error, stole second, and scored on Ennis’s single to make it 1-0 Phillies. Estalella’s solo home run in the sixth increased the lead to two. The Cardinals got that one back in the bottom of the inning, making it 2-1. Tiant pitched the last two innings as the Phillies swept the doubleheader with a tight 2-1 victory.

The next day the Cardinals scored first with a run in the first inning off Dave Barnhill and another in the second. The Phillies got one back with small ball in the third, followed by one more off Leonard’s blast of the center field wall and another on Brown’s single, making it 3-2 in their favor. They added one in the fourth and three in the fifth before Howie Krist left the game trailing 7-2. That did not stop the bleeding, and the Phillies started to run away with the game. Bench players got in on the action in the later innings and Barnhill pitched a complete game as the Phillies rolled to a 16-2 stomping of the Cardinals.

They hoped to keep up the winning ways the next day with Passeau on the mound. They scored one in the first, but Danny Litwhiler’s three-run homer in the bottom of the inning put the Cardinals on top 3-1. He knocked in two more in the second as the Cardinals got some revenge for yesterday’s beating. After another run in the fourth, Passeau left the game, relieved by Hilton Smith. Smith took advantage of the situation to get his first hit of the year in the top of the fifth, leading to a two-run inning that made it 6-3. After being held in check for three games, Musial finally got to the Phillies pitching, too, with a three-run blast to make it 9-3. The Phillies rallied in the late innings, but ultimately came up short, losing 9-6.

In the final game, the Phillies offense was stymied early while the Cards scored three runs (only one earned) off of Paige by the fourth. Buck Leonard finally got them going in the sixth with a long home run to right center, but Wells was injured sliding that inning and had to leave the game. Trailing by two in the ninth, Gibson came up with one on, but couldn’t deliver, and the Phillies lost 4-2. The final two losses had been deflating, but taking three of five in St. Louis was a great achievement. They would have to keep up that level of play if they hoped to catch the league leaders.

Thanks! I'm a Phillies fan, too, and it's been fun to imagine a history where they were innovative and successful.

At Chicago (July 31 and August 1)

Wells’s muscle strain sent him to the injured list just as Ray Dandridge was getting into his rehab assignment, so Veeck cut that short and brought the third baseman back to the team. It was the time of year when every team was feeling the strain of the long season and hot weather. Benson and Leonard had nagging injuries and Si Johnson’s blister had been bothering him for two weeks. But they traveled on, this time to Chicago for three games against the Cubs. Brown moved to shortstop and Bobby Estalella (pictured below) to right field to make room for Dandridge in the shuffled lineup.

Mathis started the first game at Wrigley and pitched well early. The Phillies scored a run in the third, but left the bases loaded. They got one more in the fifth on Leonard’s RBI double to make it 2-0. Mathis labored, but was effective, not giving up a run until the fifth. Tiant relieved him in the eighth with the score still 2-1; he loaded the bases, then retired the side with the lead intact. The Phillies added an insurance run in the ninth, and Tiant shut the Cubs down to preserve the 3-1 victory.

The Phillies scored first in the next day in the first game of a doubleheader when a Cubs error led to a run. Barnhill could not hold the lead, though, and Chicago scored two in the second. Both pitchers settled in after that, but Barnhill walked Cubs pitcher Lon Warneke in the eighth with the bases loaded to make it 3-1 Chicago. Beck relieved him, but balked in another right away. The Phillies got one back in the ninth but no more, and lost it 4-2.

Passeau faced his former squad in the last game, and he fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. He gave up three more by the third while Ray Prim held the Phillies to one hit through six innings. They would ultimately get three hits, but no runs as the Cubs coasted to a 4-0 win.

At Pittsburgh (August 4)

After two days off, the Phillies met the Pirates for a single game at Forbes Field. Pittsburgh’s Max Butcher had trouble finding the plate in the early going and helped the Phillies to a first inning run, but Johnny Wyrostek’s leadoff triple off of Paige gave it right back. An error on Brown made it 2-1 Pirates. Neither side’s batters were especially productive after the first, and the score remained the same until the eighth, when Benson knocked in Leonard to tie the game. Again, the Pirates doubled the Phillies output that inning and went up 4-2. The Phillies got two on in the ninth, but bad baserunning doomed their chances and they went down to defeat.
