but no, Chapman's replacement was just a matter of a better rated player stepping in (just happened to be the same guy who replaced him for real)

The back-and-forth season came to a close in Waffletown with an 8-0 victory over Shawinigan to hopefully set the tone for the next season in the Bronze league. If it weren't for the dismal stretch in May and June (18-36), Waffletown might have fared better in the race for a post season birth and a promotion to Silver league.

Team highlights:

-on the batting side, the team set season records for batting average (.272), at bats (5744), hits (1564), doubles (363) and on base percentage (.329)

- for pitching, the staff set season records for ERA (4.25), runs allowed (721), earned runs allowed (683) and home runs allowed (138). Management acknowledges the biggest hole that needs to be filled for the upcoming season is the bullpen, which ranked a lowly 15th in the conference in ERA this season.

-defensively the team set season records for assists (1703), total chances (6125), double plays (157), fielding percentage (.987) and errors (78)

Streaks:

-newcomer, Cecil Travis, set a new team scoring streak of 7 games; and Heinie Manush set a team RBI record of 7 games as well.

-on the pitching side, Tex Carleton had one of the streakiest seasons ever, as he set team records for winning streak (6 games) and losing streak (7 games). Hugh Casey set a new team record for saves streak with 9.

Individual performances:

-Cecil Travis settled into the lead-off role quite nicely, finishing the year with a solid .324 average. On the defensive side, he was shifted from short-stop to second base midway through the final month to train up at that position. Management believes he will be a stronger asset at second once he is fully trained.

-Latest addition, Ernie Lombardi, took no time at all to settle into the clean-up role. In his brief 21 game with the team, he managed to hit 3 home runs and drive in 20 to go along with his .354 average.

-In the field, Peanuts Lowrey continued to showcase his defensive prowess in center-field, leading the league in zone rating (+16); and racking up 13 assists.

While improvements to the pitching staff will be the priority of the team in the near future, the GM of Waffletown made one off-season addition already, as a deal appeared on the waiver wire that he couldn't pass up.

LF - Lefty O'Doul (1929) - 85, for 2000 pp

The GM hates to send him down as he has been a solid producer for the squad, but to make room for O'Doul, current DH Jo-Jo Moore has been moved to the reserves.

In one final off season move before the start of the new campaign, the GM of Waffletown made a small move in an attempt to upgrade the outfield defense.

OF - Stan Spence (1944) - 76, for 450 pp

While Heinie Manush has performed admirably at the plate, his defense has been quite lacking in right field (career zone rating of -34); so he has been sent to the reserves to make room. Spence comes to the Syrups with experience in center field only, so it will take him some time to get up to speed in right. (he should get to around 80 rating in right when fully trained)

The third season is underway and Waffletown finds themselves once again in the Bronze league. While management would welcome a strong season and a long run in the playoffs, they are also realistic with the knowledge that their new outfields (Stan Spence) and second baseman (Cecil Travis) are both still learning their positions; so there will undoubtedly be growing pains as they improve their abilities.

As the new season moves into the second half of June, management hopes the recent trends for their team continue and they stay on the winning track. After a back-and-forth month of April (13-13) and a similar month of May (14-13), the team is doing slightly better in June (10-7) to give them a 37-33 record for the year; good enough for 3rd place in the AC West division, 6 games back of the lead.

Overall the team is cranking away at the plate, with a league leading .283 batting average. On the defensive side, they are getting solid performances from their starting staff as well, as they lead the league in starter's ERA at 3.64; and also lead the league with a low of 28 errors on the young season.

The glaring hole that still needs to be filled, as management has already acknowledged, is the bullpen which ranks a lowly 13th in the conference in ERA. Management continues to scan the waiver wire to watch for potential upgrades (especially for the bullpen) but has not found any players within their budget.

In the first of many steps to improve the bullpen, the Waffletown GM made a small pickup from the waiver wire and brought aboard:

SP - Jim Turner (1937) - 75, for 300 points

Johnny Murphy has been sent to the reserves and Turner will join the bullpen to try and bring some stability.

In a late night move, the Waffletown GM brought aboard another addition for the bullpen:

SP - Burleigh Grimes (1928) - 79, for 800 points

While he could step in as the fifth starter over Johnny Morrison, management believes Grimes will do more good in the bullpen. Urban Shocker has been sent to the reserves to make room.

As the season heads into the final stretch run, Waffletown finds themselves with a tenuous grip on the second wild card position. After a solid month of June (17-10), the Syrups slipped back into a rather mediocre style of play in July (10-14) and just average August (13-13). They currently sit 7 games back of the division lead with a record of 70-66. With only 4 games remaining against the division leaders, they would rely on the help of others if they are going to overtake Kansas City to claim the division title.

Waffletown scouts continue to search independent leagues and send potential recruits to the Spile for management to assess and decide if they have a place with the team (i.e. - free packs from CM mode). While most recruits tend to only rank in the lower tier (Iron/Bronze) every blue moon they manage to find a higher ranked player. Mid morning on September 7th, a bus pulled up with 6 more recruits. The first 5 that stepped off were the typical group management has always seen and they quickly made their way to the reserve roster. The 6th player to emerge was one that has not been seen until today in Waffletown.

CL - David Robertson (2011) - 96

Diamond rated Robertson stepped off the bus, took one look around the facilities and said, "No way in hell I'm playing in this crap-hole." (sadly, Robertson doesn't fit the old timey theme; but his AH average price (over 12K) will hopefully bring in a nice chunk of funds for potential upgrades).

Sounds like someone should have tipped him off ahead of time that he isn't playing in Kansas anymore!

Great stuff!

While waiting for his diamond in the rough to sell for a boost in funds, the Waffletown GM perused the waiver wire to line up potential deals to nab when those funds finally do arrive. Along with some offers that are currently out of range (but will hopefully be affordable relatively soon), he also spotted a deal the team could afford right now; and was able to bring aboard:

SP - Willis Hudlin (1927) - 83, for 2500 points

Johnny Morrison has been sent to the reserves to make room for Hudlin; who will slide into the number 3 slot in the starting rotation.

Tex Carleton pitches a masterpiece in front of the home crowd at the Spile (only 2 walks kept him from perfection).

The proceeds from Carleton's no-hitter combined with the quick sale of Robertson gives the Waffletown GM a plethora of funds to acquire potential upgrades for the stretch run (assuming the right deals present themselves).

With the team in the midst of a 3 game slide, which has dropped them 2.5 games back of the final wild card spot, the Waffletown GM spotted a deal on the waiver wire for a player who might help right the ship:

SP - Claude Passeau (1943) - 88, for 3000 points

Eddie Rommel has been sent to the reserves to make room. Passeau will step into the top spot in the starting rotation. With Hugh Casey struggling in the role of closer, management has made more shifts in the pitching, moving Casey into a setup role, and shifting Joe McGinnity into the role of closer.

After stumbling down the stretch and dropping as far back as 2.5 games out of the final wild card spot, it wasn't looking good for the post season hopes in Waffletown. The team dug deep for the final week of the season and did their best to put pressure on the teams ahead of them. When the dust settled after the regular season schedule ended, the Syrups found themselves in a tie for the second wild card spot with the Asylum Keepers.

For the second time in their three year history, the champagne corks popped in the Waffletown clubhouse after their 7-4 tie-breaker victory over Asylum to secure the second wild card position. Waffletown will travel to New Haven to play the Red Sox in the wild card game. During the regular season, the two teams met 6 times, with Waffletown taking the series 4 games to 2.

regular season notes:

team batting - the team set single season batting records for average (.281), at bats (5775), hits (1624), doubles (401), walks (471), low in strikeouts (642), on base percentage (.339), and OPS (.748).

team pitching - regular season records for ERA (3.98), saves (50), innings pitched (1472.2), hits allowed (1459), runs (684), earned runs (652), oavg (.260), and complete games (15).

team fielding - the team set records across the board in fielding with putouts (4418), assists (1738), total chances (6219), double plays (159), errors (63), fielding percentage (.990), defensive efficiency (.705) and zone rating (+24)

Individual performance:

-Cecil Travis had an outstanding season at the top of the lineup, cranking out 219 hits, 65 doubles, 101 runs scored and a.327 average (which claimed the AC batting crown). He also improved his fielding rating at 2B to 72 which should help the defense up the middle in future seasons.

-Lefty O'Doul settled into the clean-up role quite nicely, leading the team with 19 home runs and 101 RBIs.

-management was quite pleased with the offensive production from Ernie Lombardi (as they have been used to the catcher position being the weak point when it comes to offense). Lombardi finished with a .292 average, 13 home runs and 59 RBIs (batting right after O'Doul didn't leave a lot of runners aboard to drive in).

-on the pitching side, Tex Carleton (17-11, 3.17) and Mel Harder (15-11, 3.55) led the staff; and while Hugh Casey led the team with 33 saves, he also struggled to hold onto quite a few games (1-10 record).

The Syrups took care of business in the wild card game and emerged after an 11 inning pitcher's duel with a 2-1 victory to move on to the LDS.

Waffletown will face Bowling Green in the LDS series. The two teams met 7 times during the regular season with Bowling Green winning the series 4 games to 3.

After the wild card victory, the Waffletown GM picked up a new addition for the upcoming season in Silver league (narrator note: while it's allowed by the PT rules, the Syrups will follow a self-imposed restriction of no new players added to the squad in the post season even if they are acquired from the AH.)

CF - Sliding Billy Hamilton (peak) - 92, for 13000 points.

While his defensive range isn't as good as Peanuts Lowrey, his bat is superior and his speed will hopefully be a difference maker at the top of the lineup. Austin McHenry will be sent to the reserves next season, and Lowrey will be moved to the bench where he will be able to backup every position except catcher.

Perhaps it was first-time post season jitters for some of the boys, or just the fact that their opponent was the 105 win, top ranked team in the league; but whatever it was, the Syrups looked completely outmatched in the first two games of the LDS; dropping game 1 by a score of 8-0; and game 2 by an even bigger margin of 13-3.

The team had a players-only meeting after their shellacking in game 2 to clear the air and get their heads on straight for game 3 back home. Newest addition to the staff, Claude Passeau, took the mound in the win-or-go-home game and pitched well enough to earn the 4-3 win.

The ball was handed to another newcomer in game 4 as Willis Hudlin toed the rubber and equaled the game 3 performance of Passeau, leading the club to another 4-3 win. The team boarded the bus and headed back to Bowling Green for the winner-take-all match.

Game 5 was a similar duel of clones as Mel Harder faced off against Mel Harder (same as game 1); and like game 1, it was an 8 run differential.... but unlike game 1, this time the Syrups prevailed with a 9-1 victory and a birth in the LCS.

Waffletown will face off against their division rivals, the Kansas City Athletics. The two teams met 19 times during the regular season, with KC handily winning the series 13-6; so the Syrups know they will have a monumental task ahead of them if they hope to reach the World Series.
