RYAN RUNS RECORD TO 14-0 WITH FIRST DEFENSE

Tommy Ryan (14-0) dominated his first title defense on the way to 12th round TKO over Paddy Duffy (4-6-2) who due to lack of competition in the Welterweight division right now was rated #3.

Ryan dropped Duffy with a left hook in the 4th round. He continued to punish Duffy throughout the fight and Duffy's right-eye started to swell in the 6th. By the 12th he couldn't see anything out of it and the referee stopped the fight.

Ryan was pitching a shutout on every scorecard. After the fight Ryan stated that he would defend his title 3 more times then try his hand at the middleweight division.

On the undercard

WW - Honey Mellody UD10 Harry Lewis
MW - Jack Burke TKO3 Dan Creedon
MW - John P. Clow KO3 George Rooke
BW - Tommy Feltz UD10 Johnny Reagen
LW - Mike Daly TKO9 Kid McPartland (club)

GANS ROLLS OVER NELSON FOR 3RD TITLE DEFENSE

Joe Gans (11-1-1) scored a 8th round TKO on 4-25-03 over Battling Nelson (6-7). Nelson was ranked 9th by the LBA.

Gans cut Nelson's lip and also started Nelson's right eye swelling in the 3rd. He continued to pound that right eye until the ref stepped in at the beginning of the 8th round. At the time of the stoppage I had it 68-65 Gans. Two judges and ringside expert TC Dale also had it 68-65 and one judge had it 67-66.

People are starting to clamour for a 3rd Gans-Blackburn fight. Blackburn handed Gans his lose and draw. I would expect to see it happen by the end of the year if both keep winning.

On the Undercard

LW - Jem Carney KO10 Dick Burge
MW - Frank Craig TKO9 Jim Hall
LW - Andy Bowen TKO5 Young Corbett (Corbett stepped up in weight for the fight)
MW - Stanley Ketchel TKO3 Bill Slavin (Ketchel is a beginner fighting in the club ranks)
FW - Solly Smith KO3 Eddie Santry (club)

MCGOVERN RETAINS BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE

Terry McGovern (13-2) retained his Bantamweight title with a 2nd round KO of Harry Forbes (5-5-3) who was ranked #5 by the LBA.

McGovern stunned Forbes in the 1st, then dropped him 3 times in the 2nd. The 3rd time Forbes stayed down.

In an oversight by the LBA McGovern will need to avenge his lone Bantamweight loss in his next title defense. It was overlooked by the LBA that Chappie Moran scored a TKO5 over McGovern back in 1901. The rematch will be McGovern's next defense.

On the undercard

LW - Billy Meyer DRAW Harlem Tommy Murphy (Meyer barely stays undefeated)
WW - Rube Ferns TKO9 Jack Bennett
FW - Jem Driscoll KO7 Billy Whistler
LHW - Fred Robinson DRAW Johnny McGlade (McGlade stepped up to LH for this club fight)
BW - Patsy Haley MD10 Joe Bowker (club)

AL GREENFIELD GETS SECOND CHANCE

Al Greenfield (8-8-1) gets a second chance at the upper level of the middleweight division by becoming the first LBA fighter to fight his way out of the club ranks.

Greenfield dropped to (1-6) and into the club ranks on 04-29-1901. With an 8th round KO of Geoffrey Thorne (5-9-1) he evened out his record and moved back up on 05-15-1903. He spent 2 years and 17 days in the club division and went (7-2-1). He won 4 straight fights and hasn't lost since Marchj of 1902.

ATTELL SMOKES GRIFFO FOR 2ND DEFENSE

Abe Attell (11-3-1) knocked Young Griffo (10-3-1) down 3 times in route to a 6th round TKO. The fight was pretty close despite a 3rd round knockdown. Griffo was outboxing Attell winning 3 of the first 5 rounds. Then Attell flattened Griffo twice early in round 6 and had Griffo out on the ropes when it was stopped.

I had it 48-47 Griffo at the time of the stoppage. Tom Trunzo had it 48-46 Attell. The judges had it 48-46/46-48/47-47.

On the undercard

FW - George Dixon UD10 Joe Bernstein (Dixon stepped up to FW for the fight)
LW - Jack Blackburn UD10 Kid Farmer
MW - Mike Donovan DRAW Billy Devine (Devine moved up to MW for the loss)
HW - Jim Flynn TKO2 Jim Daly (Flynn fought as a beginner)
LW - Austin Gibbons UD10 Billy Frazier (club fight)

ROOT RETAINS LBA LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

Jack Root (14-3) retained his Lightheavyweight title with an UD15 over Jack Sullivan (9-4-1) on 6-8-03. A very close fight that was back and forth for the first 10 rounds. Root broke it open by winning rounds 11-15.

I had Root winning 145-141. Harry Otty, ringside expert, scored 143-141. The official judges had it (champ 1) 143-141, (random) 143-141, (champ 2) 145-139

On the undercard the LBA had it's first 12 round fight. The new rules state that any fighters ranked in the top 10 fighting each other will fight 12 rounds. Providing that the division has more than 20 ranked fighters.

In the 12 round fight #10 Harris Martin (7-4-1) scored what many felt was a mild upset with a SD12 over Jack Burke (9-4-2). It might of been the best fight of the night. Burke can out strong and put Martin to the mat in the 2nd round. Martin recovered and won the last 4 rounds including an 8th round knockdown. I had it 115-112 in favor of Martin.

The official judges scored it 114-112/113-114/114-113 for a very close decision.

Also on the undercard

HW - Joe Coburn DRAW Marvin Hart
HW - John Knifton KO2 Frank Slavin
LHW - George Gardner UD10 Mike McCoole
MW - Frank Craig KO4 John P. Clow

Slight Rule change. Instead of the Champion always fighting a top 10 contender I've decided that it'll be 1-25 tune-up fight 26-75 Top 10, and 76-100 Top 5.

The option of who to fight in the top 10 of some divisions was getting repetitive.

FITZSIMMONS REMAINS PERFECT

Bob Fitzsimmons (13-0) retained his Middleweight Title belt with a KO14 over #5 Charles McCoy (8-3-2) on 6-14-03. The victory was Fitz's 4th title defense.

Despite it taking 14 rounds the outcome was never in jeporady. Fitz dominated from the opening bell. McCoy showed alot of heart, getting up off the canvas 6 times before the ref counted him out on the 7th knockdown. He went down in the 7th, 12th, 13th and then 4 times in the 14th.

Both myself and Shane Macleod at ringside had it 129-116. The official judges had it 130-115/ 128-116/ 129-116.

On the undercard

WW - Young Peter Jackson MD10 Joe Walcott
LHW - Jack Dempsey TKO7 Dan Dwyer (Dempsey stepping up to LH for this fight)
MW - Joe Butler KO7 Edward Rollins
MW - Denny Kelliher TKO2 Al Greenfield (Greenfield welcomed back to the upper level)
LHW - Charlie O'Donnell TKO6 Jack Stewart

LABLANCHE MOVES BACK UP

George LaBlanche (7-7) won on 6-20-03 with a TKO3 over WW Matty Matthews to even his record and move out of the club ranks. LaBlanche fell to 1-6 and into the club ranks on 1-26-02.

He made quick work of the club ranks with his lone set back being a DQ in the 10th round against Johnny McGlade.

"I hung in there with some tough fighters early in my career but didn't get the decisions (losses include Dempsey, Fitzsimmons, Burke, and McCarthy). I definetely feel I belong here in the upper class," LaBlanche replied.

JOHNSON TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS

In the first of 4 title fights in the month of July, Jack Johnson (13-1) won a tune-up bought over #38 Bill Farnam (6-7-1) with a 5th round KO on July 2nd, 1903. It was Johnson's 2nd title defense.

Farnam was hanging around and scoring some points before he got careless in the 5th. He had actually won 1 round. He seemed to hurt Johnson with an uppercut early in the 5th. Johnson backed up to the ropes and Farman, sensing his chance for an upset, went after him wildly. Johnson withstood the flurry and landed a brutal left hook dropping Farnam for a 9 count. He struggled to his feet and then got put down for good 25 seconds later.

On the Undercard

HW - Larry Foley UD10 John C. Heenan (Heenan came into the bout ranked #1)
HW - Bill Squires KO8 Dan McCarty
HW - Joe Goddard KO7 George Godfrey (Goddard was knocked down early and came back to win)
HW - Tom Lees TKO8 Herbert A. Slade
HW - Dick Egan KO6 Mick Dooley (club bout)

GANS HANDLES GILMORE

Joe Gans (12-1-1) scored a TKO12 over #6 Harry Gilmore (8-6) for his 4th title defense on 7-14-1903. Gans was in complete control from the opening bell, losing only one round decisively. Repeated Jabs to Gilmore's right eye started the eye swelling in the fourth. It seemed completely closed by the 9th. Gilmore gamely fought on, but it was stopped by the ring doctor in the 12th.

I had it 109-100. Ringside expert Jim Trunzo had it 108-101. The official judges had it 109-99/108-100/108-100.

Gans will face Jack Blackburn for the 3rd time in November.

On the undercard

HW - Mike Brennan KO9 Peter Maher
WW - Mike Sullivan UD10 Owen Ziegler
LHW - Leo Houck UD10 Jack Bonner (Bonner steping up to LHW for the loss)
BW - Maxey Haugh UD10 Austin Rice
HW - Martin Niery UD10 Jack Stelzner (club fight)

TOMMY RYAN RETAINS TITLE

Tommy Ryan (15-0) won a UD15 over #5 Jimmy Gardner (6-5-2) on 7-20-1903, for his second defense of the LBA Welterweight title. It was the second time in his career he has fought Gardner. The first time he won a SD10 in Dec, 1901. It was the closest Ryan has come to losing.

The time Ryan controlled the fight from the outset. He dropped Gardner with a viscous combination in the 3rd. Opened a cut over Gardner's left eye in the 4th, then was basically on cruise control the rest of the way. Gardner did manage to bloody Ryan's nose and cut Ryan over the left eye, but was never able to gain any momentum.

I had it scored 148-138. Jaret Morgan at ringside had it 147-138. The official judges had it 148-137/147-139/146-139.

On the undercard

LHW- George Fulijames MD10 Jack Sullivan (Fulijames stepping up to LHW for the win)
FW - Tommy Kelly UD10 Billy Whistler (Kelly stepping up to FW for the win)
WW - Jimmy Carroll KO4 Dixie Kid (Carroll stepping up to WW for the win)
LW - Billy Frazier UD10 Eddie Santry (Santry stepping up to LW for this club fight)
HW - Johnny Woods UD10 Dan Hickey (club fight)

MCGOVERN WORKS QUICK

Terry McGovern (14-2) made quick work of #5 Digger Stanley (3-6-3) with a 7th round KO, in his 2nd title defense on 7-27,1903. McGovern nearly had it stopped in the 1st and the 3rd, but ran out of time in each round. Terry put Stanley dwon twice in the 1st. Stanley didn't go down in the 3rd but was seemingly defenseless against the ropes by the end of the round.

Mcgovern finally ended it with an uppercut mid-way through round 7.

At the time of the stoppage I had it 59-52. I scored round 1 1-7, and round 3 10-8 despite no knockdown. Dan Cuoco at ringside had it 59-54. The official judges had it 59-52/59-53/59-54. I was glad to see one judge scored it exactley the same as I did.

On the undercard

LHW - Philadelphia Jack O'Brien TKO4 George Rooke (Rooke stepping up to LHW for the loss)
HW - Sam Langford KO5 James McCoy
WW - Rube Ferns UD10 Billy Devine
MW - Dick O'Brien DRAW Arthur Upham (O'Brien is a beginner)
MW - Pete McCoy UD10 Johnny McGlade

STUNNING UPSET AND LABLANCHE MAKES MOST OF 2ND CHANCE

August 22, 1903

Patsy Sweeney, rated 5, (2-1) stunned the boxing world with a 3rd Round TKO over Battling Nelson. Nelson, rated a 9, has been an underachiever his whole career. This fight dropped him to (6-8), yet he was still a 4-1 favorite over Sweeney.

Patsy took a thumb in the eye during the opening minute of round one and Nelson swarmed almost prompting the ref to stop the fight. Sweeney fought definsively in round 2 and in the corner the doc was talking about stopping the fight. With a sense of urgency he jumped Nelson in the opening seconds of round 3. Nelson went down for a 7 count, struggled to his feet and went right back down for a 3 count. Sweeney swarmed him opening a cut under Nelson's left eye and the over his right. Nelson was defenseless on the ropes at the 2:13 mark and the ref stepped in to stop it.

George LaBlanche (8-7) fought back from a 4th round knock down and knocked Jack Bonner (7-8) down in the 8th to win a UD10 in his first fight back in the upper division. This marked LaBlanche's 5th straight win.

ATTELL RETAINS TITLE IN A BOXING MATCH

Abe Attell (12-3-1) outboxed Jem Driscoll (12-2) over 15 rounds to retain the LBA Featherweight title and also to avenge an earlier defeat. Driscoll stopped Attell on 4-22-1901 due to a bad gash over his left eye in round 2. This fight Attell never really gave him a chance. Attell's superior speed and defense kept Driscoll off balance the whole fight and Attell cruised to victory.

I had it 146-140. Christopher Almodovar at ringside had it 147-139. The official judges had it a little closer surprisingly, they scored it 144-142/146-139/143-142. The closer two scores were by the judges I sat up to be bias to the champ. It was a nice surprise.

Attell now has avenged all 3 of his loses.

On the undercard

BW - Joe Wagner UD10 Chappie Moran
WW - Joe Walcott UD10 Otto Sieloff
HW - Jim Flynn TKO6 Jack Scales (Flynn still a beginner)
LW - Jimmy Mitchell UD10 Charles McCarthy (club fight)
BW - Frankie Neil UD10 Patsy Haley (club fight)

Only if they are 1. Real fighters from 1900-1903 2. and are in the game. I just did a quick search of my current fighters and none are from Mexico. I don't expect to see alot until later in the century. Thanks for following. I'll make a note when I bring someone in from Mexico.
