FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT SET

Harry Lyons took it to Jem Driscoll despite being a 2-1 underdog. He was in control the entire fight and ended up with an easy decision.

Lyons (8-3) will take on Young Griffo (8-1-1) for the first LBA Featherweight title in June.

GANS IN A BLOW OUT

Joe Gans worked over George Lavinge on May 8th, 1902 for the LBA Lightweight title ....

Gans put Lavinge to the mat in the 2nd and the 5th and won every round on my scorecard. He lost a point for low blows in the 9th but won that round also ....

My final scorecard had it 149-134 ... the official judges had it 148-134/148-136/147-135.

Gans landed 561 punches to Lavigne's 209.

Gans landed 45.4% of his punches to Lavigne's 28.6%.

It ws a really unexpected lopsided fight. Gans first title defense will be against Jack Blackburn who KO'd Gans in the 7th in January 1902.

JACKSON OVER LANNON IN A SNOOZEFEST

Peter Jackson cruised his way to a UD over Joe Lannon on June 3rd, 1902 .... It was an uneventful fight until the 15th. No cuts, no swelling, and no knockdowns until Jackson scored 2 in the final 3 minutes ...

This was considered a tune-up for the mandatory challanger title fight which will happen in Nov. or Dec. He will probably fit in one more tune-up before then.

Scorecards ... I had it 147-136
Shane macloed ringside had it 147-137

Official judges scored it 147-136/144-138/146-135

LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE SET

Joe Choynski (8-3) will try to revenge one of his loses against Jack Root (10-3) for the Lightheavyweight title in Aug.

Root scored a 3rd round TKO of Choynski on 12-16-1901. The fight was stopped due to one nasty gash over the left eye of Choynski ....

Root lost 3 of his first 4 fights all three loses came to heavyweights .... since then he has stuck to his own division and reeled off 9 straight wins...

Choynski, in addition to Root, lost to 2 heavyweights ... Neither fighter will have a mandatory fight if victorous.

FITZSIMMONS SURVIVES SCARE IN FIRST DEFENSE

Bob Fitzsimmons ran his record to 10-0 and won his first title defense June 24th against Jack "the lad" Burke (7-3-2) .... but it didn't start out that way ...

Burke was all over fitz from round one ... He easily took round 1 & 2 and then put Fitz to the canvas in round 3 .... Fitz then woke up and fought back late in round 3 .... He punished Burke in round 4 and then Ko'd him in round 5 ....

This was Fitz coming out sluggish and Burke couldn't capitalize on it ...

LYONS DOMINATES GRIFFO FOR THE FEATHERWEIGHT CROWN

Harry Lyons (9-3) avenged an earlier loss to Young Griffo (8-2-1) to win the LBA Featherweight crown on 6-29-1902 ...

Lyons controlled the fight from the opening bell .... through 10 rounds I had it scored 97-94 Lyons .... Then Lyons dropped Griffo twice in the 11th and twice in the 13th, to run away with the score cards. ....

Griffo gave the 14th every thing he had and won the round but he got hit with a powerful right hand early in the 15th and saw the 10 count from his back ...

Lyons will try to avenge his only other featherweight loss against Abe Attell in his first title defense ...

ROOT HAS CHOYNSKI'S NUMBER

Jack Root (11-3) beat Joe Choynski (8-4) for the second time to win the LightHeavyweight Title .... Root scored a 3rd round TKO over Choynski in Dec of 1901 .... Choynski won the first two rounds convincingly then got dropped in the 3rd and was defenseless on the ropes when the ref stopped it

This time it went to the sixth round and once again Choynski was dominating the fight ... I had it scored 49-46 as did all the judges ... but Joe got dropped twice and was once again out on the ropes when the ref stopped it.

Root will defend his title against George Gardner (his lone LH loss) in November ..... it'll be his third fight against Gardner (5-2-1) ... splitting two UD

GANS RUNS SCARED AND KISSES HIS SISTER

Joe Gans (9-1-1) made his first "successful" defense against the only man who beat him Jack Blackburn (5-1-3). Blackburn KO'd Gans in the first meeting back in Jan 02 and Gans fought as if he was scared it'd happen again.

Alot of rounds had little or no action. Gans stayed outside and clinched when Blackburn got close .... The fans booed from the 5th round on. Although I had it 145-141 in favor of Gans the Judges didn't appreciate his tatics and ruled it to be a draw ... the judges scored it 145-141/143-143/143-144.

The crowd wasn't entirely disappointed as the got to see one of the fastest Ko's in LBA history on the undercard. Jack Bonnor walked into a 6 punch combination and failed to get off a single punch before collapsing to the canvas against Billy McCarthy. He was officially counted out 0:39 seconds into the fight.

HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE CHANGES HANDS

Jack Johnson avenge his lone lose to take the Heavyweight championship belt from Peter Jackson on 10-03-1902. Johnson cut Jackson under the left eye in the first round and dominated the rest of the way.

It was scored by ringside expert Walt Arnold and myself 146-140.
The ringside judges had it at 144-141/143-142/145-140.

It marks the first time in LBA history that a title belt has changed hands. Although with the lineup of title fights this month I think it'll be followed shortly.

fITZSIMMONS CONTINUES DOMINATION OF THE MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION

Bob Fitzsimmons took the first two rounds slow to figure out the stlye of Billy Mccarthy and then destroyed him in the 3rd and 4th rounds ....

Fitz landed punch after punch in the third round with final punch stat #'s showing McCarthy not landing a single blow.

Halfway throught the 4th Fitz dropped McCarthy with a combination and ended the fight for his second title defense.

ATTELL TAKES FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Attell used superior conditioning and defense to take a UD victory and the LBA Featherweight belt away from Harry Lyons.

Lyons went hard and took the 3-6 rounds before he started to tire. A cut over the right eye in the 7th put him into defensive mode and he dropped his hands from fatigue in the 10th. Attell kept up steady pressure the whole fight landing 39% of his punches to just 25% for Lyons.

I had it 145-141, Jim Trunzo at ringside had it 145-140 ... The judges tried to keep the champ in it and all 3 scored it 143-142.

I was just this close to my first shutout ... Jem Driscoll won a UD over Jimmy Mitchell 100-89/99-90/100-89 ... I had it 100-91 and ringside expert had it 99-90 ... so close

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE

Terry McGovern (12-2) took the bantamweight title with an 8th round knockout of George Dixon (8-2) leaving only the Welterweight title to be decided.

Dixon tried to stay outside and box, but McGovern got to him and hurt him everytime he landed a punch. Dixon went down in the 4th, was cut in the 4th and 5th.

Dixon managed to stay outside and win the 6th and 7th, but then got flattened late in the 8th round and failed to beat the count.

McGovern's two losses have come outside the bantamweight division so he will have no mandatory defense.

ROOT DEFENDS IN A YAWNER

Jack Root with little competition to chose from defended his title against the #7 pp ranked Duncan McDonald. The fight was a clear mismatch from the start, but a game McDonald danced his way to 15 rounds.

Fighting strictly a defensive fight he didn't get hurt but he didn't get the belt either and fell to 3-5.

Hoping for some competition soon, Root secured his first defense and ran his record to 12-3

Both Tom Trunzo and myself scored the fight 147-139. The judges scored it 146-139/144-141/147-138.

WELTERWEIGHT CROWN FINALLY WON

Tommy Ryan was already the people's champ of the Welterweight division but finally made it official on 12-20-1902 with a 15 round dismantling of Rube Ferns.

Ferns was game and tried to give Ryan a go, but a stunning overhand right in the 5th round that put Ferns to the mat stopped any dream of that. By most scorecards Ferns only won 2 rounds after that point and lost a UD on every card.

I had it 146-139. Walt Arnold at ringside had it 147-139. The official judges had it 146-139/146-139/146-140.

Ryan improved to 13-0 while Ferns dropped to 7-4.

This was the final Title to be won. As 1902 draws to a close we have a champion in every current division.
