The Islanders open up the finals with a statement. Larry Landon gets 3 assists. New York scores two goals in each period. Minnesota can’t get anything until the score is 5-0! New York wins the opener 6-1. Game 2 starts with Ray Bourque scoring early. Chris Chelios answers, but Bourque and Tim Kerr take over. Before the first period ends, both players have 2 goals and 2 assists. It’s 4-1 after a period. The Islanders add a few goals to salt it away. New York looks too strong for the North Stars. 6-2 NY takes game two.

With game three tied at 2 heading into the third, the North Stars take their stand. This is the fightback they needed. Dave Taylor gets his 11th. After Bernie Federko ties it for the Islanders, Brent Ashton scores 2 minutes later, and Dave Hunter adds some insurance. The strong third period gives the North Stars a 5-3 win! The fightback continues in game four. Randy Wood and Dino Ciccarelli give Minny a 2-1 first period lead. Joel Otto then scores 2 goals, and assists on 2 others! That’s a 4 point night from the center. 6-3 Minnesota ties the series.

New York gets two early 2nd period goals to take a lead in game five, but Minnesota responds with 2 late 2nd period goals to tie it. The teams then exchanged goals again in the third, which forces an overtime. In overtime, long time North Star, Darryl Sittler wins it at the 4:54 mark! Minnesota takes it 5-4, and lead the series! New York hasn’t lost 3 in a row all season, until now! Game 6 is wild. Take a look at the first period summary. I can’t really relay what happened well enough to even try!



7 goals and a Minnesota lead after a period. It looks like the scoring would continue. After both teams getting a goal in the first 2 minutes of the second, the goalies shut the door. Dave Tippett would tie the game just seconds into the third. Neither team could grab a lead, which means overtime for the 2nd straight game. It takes 10 minutes, but Lucien DeBlois makes sure the series will go 7. He scores for NY, to win it 6-5!!

Moments into game 7, a Brent Ashton shot hits Dino Ciccarelli, it deflects by Phil Myre, into the net, giving Minnesota a 1-0 lead! 5 minutes later, Ciccarelli gets his 2nd of the game, making it 2-0. NY outshoots Minnesota 11-4 in the first, but they trail.

Early in the 2nd, Darryl Sittler extends the lead to 3. Tim Bothwell then scores the North Stars 4th goal on their 7th shot. Phil Myre picked a hell of a time to have his worst game! Brent Ashton makes it 5-0 and it’s only a matter of time now! After years of failure, with a 5-2 win, the Minnesota North Stars have won the Stanley Cup!!

1985 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Ray Bourque wins the first of a few Pilote trophies methinks. Mario Lemieux is the rookie of the year. Wayne Gretzky wins his third straight Hart Trophy! That’s now becoming a pattern!





With more teams in the league these days, more players will retire and receive the honour of having their jersey’s hang in arenas!! Buffalo Sabre’s Bill Barber is the latest to receive this treatment. Bill retires at the young age of 32, finishing his short, but amazing career with 1023 points in 986 games. He was the Sabres first star. His number 8 will never be worn in Buffalo again. Legendary goalie, in Philadelphia atleast, Gerry Desjardins has finally retired from the game of hockey. It’s been years since he played in the NHL, but his love of the game kept him active in the minors. The Flyers will honour his number 1. Gerry was the goalie who gave the performance of a lifetime, helping the Flyers to the biggest upset in NHL history, when they beat Montreal for the Stanley Cup in 1970! Desjardins made 60 saves in OT of game 7, to go along with his amazing playoff performance that year.

After seeing Dominik Hasek play well in this years playoffs, the Jets might be deciding it’s his time. They trade their 4.5 star goalie, Don Edwards to the Flames, for Mike Krushelnyski and a first round pick! Edwards is 29, and the losingest(not a word, I don’t care) goalie in WHA history. Check out his record. 38-160-19! He played with the Stingers, who were horrible. It’s a weird move for Calgary. They have a 5 star goalie in Bob Froese, whose 27, and 25 year old rookie Brian Hayward, whose 4.5 stars. Don Edwards isn’t gonna fill a need. Seems like a waste of assets. Krushelnyski has 141 goals in 4 years, and a 1st round pick is a 1st round pick. Winnipeg not looking dumb here.

The draft is filled with good players, with good potentials, but no one franchise changing, just yet. Obviously players can develop better. With the top pick, the Oilers try to fill a need, selecting goalie Curtis Joseph, who wasn’t drafted in real life. Mike Richter, who has a higher potential then Joseph, goes 2nd to Pittsburgh.





Nick Libett was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Nick is probably the most unikely real life player to achieve this in the game. It seems like he came out of nowhere, and started scoring out of the blue. He didn’t stop until he retired. Libett has been one of my favourite players during this replay. I’m happy to see him receive this honour!



Detroit is the first winner of the Iron Curtain draft. Unfortunately for them, the best qualifying player they own is Mikhail Shtalenkov, a 19 year old Russian goalie. He’s a 1 star potential goalie, with very average ratings across the board. Don’t expect Shtalenkov to play in the NHL anytime soon.



The 2nd team selected is the Canadiens, who will sign 19 year old winger, German Titov. Titov is not ready for the NHL, but he will be someday. He’s got 2 star potential, and is already a slick puckhandler, who has a head for the game.

Player Spotlight

One of the two defenseman to hit the 100 point mark last season was Al MacInnis. Here’s a look at him going into the season. Unstoppable is a word that comes to mind.

Last years assist leader was Neal Broten, someone I have never mentioned. No real reason, as Boston isn’t really challenging and my focus tends to move elsewhere it seems, but Broten has back to back 84 assist season, and deserves some recognition. Lets take a look at him.

1985-86 NHL Regular Season

The Detroit Red Wings have sort of surprised everyone with a hot start, taking an early lead in the Norris Division. They ofcourse have Mario Lemieux, but a subtle move made just before opening day has worked out really well. The Wings picked up winger Ilkka Sinisalo from Montreal. He was put on Mario Lemieux’s right side, and has contributed a league leading 28 assists in 24 games so far. Detroit didn’t really have anyone who fit on a line with Mario. This has worked out well so far.

The other big story early on, is the Flyers. They have gone from horrible, 63 points last year, to amazing, with a 17-4-2 record, best in the league!! Steve Yzerman is off to a great start, with 36 points, but it’s more then just him. Pete Peeters and Ron Low have shaved 1.5 GAA’s off their averages from a year ago. Their young D core, all under 26, seem to have matured at the same time. They are deep on defense. Lets see if they can keep it up.

Marcel Dionne and Gilbert Perreault both just passed the 1500 point plateau. Both have slowed down in their mid 30’s, but they are contributing, even though the Pens and Canucks are not very good. Dionne was the 5th player and Perreault was the 6th to get here! HOF is waiting.

Wayne Gretzky just signed a 4 year contract extension that will pay him 2.3 million dollars. That’s 575k a year. Time to take a look that the top 10 salaries in the NHL right now.

Dave Andreychuk almost became the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games. His 50th game came against his old team, the Quebec Nordiques, and Andreychuk scored 2 goals, giving him 49 goals!! Still, that’s the best goal scoring pace we have ever seen, I believe. Quebec traded this guy for Paul Maclean. Sorry Paul, that’s just horrible!

In just his 2nd season, Mario Lemieux is destroying the competition. His 129 points in 62 games is ridiculous!! He has 31 more points then 2nd place Wayne Gretzky. Lemieux is on pace, if he stays healthy, to challenge Dennis Maruk’s single season scoring record of 163 points.


Can Lemieux set a record this year?

The Pittsburgh Penguins are close to making history. They might post the worst record in modern history when this season is over. The 1976 Atlanta Flames went 7-61-12, for 26 points. This Penguins team is 8-58-2 for 18 points with 12 games left. Yes, they have more wins, but they could easily finish with more losses, and less points! Marcel Dionne, only 34, has no one to play with anymore. He’s fallen to half a point a game. I don’t think there is a way to view the worst plus minus of all time, but Garry Galley has a -61. I’m gonna assume that’s it!

Before the season ends, Guy Lafleur passes Stan Mikita for 2nd place on the all time scoring list. Guy finished the season with 41 goals and 90 points. That brings his career total to 766 goals, and 884 points. 1650 points, nine more then Mikita! Lafleur now sits 142 goals and 257 points behind Gordie Howe. Guy is 34….

Final Standings



Pittsburgh wins 12 games, and ties the 76 Flames with 26 points, but they lost way more. 66 losses in 80 games!! Wow!

The Flyers are passed by the Islanders, who win their 3rd straight President’s trophy. The Flyers are still hugely improved, finishing 2nd in the NHL. Will the Islanders turn this regular season dominance into a championship?

The Norris Division is the best division in hockey. Yes, the Patrick had the top 2 records, but 5th place Toronto in the Norris finished .500!



Dave Andreychuk sets an NHL record for goals in a single season. His 77 goals passes Guy Lafleur’s 72 set in 1980. Andreychuk is the reason for the Habs resurgence. He’s about to show his old Quebec team how big a mistake they made in the first round of this years playoffs!

Mario Lemieux’s 161 points is the 2nd highest total ever, only 2 points shy of Dennis Maruk’s 163! Lemieux got ridiculously good real fast! His 22 point margin of victory for the scoring title is HUGE! Mario’s teammate, Illka Sinisalo had a career high 102 points. That’s something Montreal didn’t expect he was capable of when they traded him.

Ray Bourque set a new mark for defenseman scoring. He gets 30 goals and 89 assists, for 119 points. Lets give him his 2nd Pilote Trophy right now!

1985-86 Stanley Cup Playoffs



Adams Division

Dave Andreychuk had 4 points, including the OT goal that eliminated Quebec in Montreal’s first round sweep. Hartford eliminates the Bruins without Mark Messier in the lineup, who is probably out for a few more weeks. A rematch of the last few Adams division finals goes a different way. Montreal reverses last years result with a dominant sweep of Wayne Gretzky’s Whalers.



Patrick Division

Another edition of the battle of New York sees the Rangers upset the league’s best team!! That’s’ the 2nd time the Islanders have won the President’s trophy, and lost in the opening round! The Devils use their home ice to pummel the Flyers in games 3 and 4 to win their series. The top 2 teams in the NHL are out in the first round! The battle of the underdogs goes to one of hockey’s all time underdogs. The Rockies turn Devils win the Patrick Division in 6 games and now will play for a birth in the Stanley Cup!



Norris Division

Both first round series are rematches from last year. Chicago gets revenge, easily sweeping Super Mario and the first place Red Wings! The defending champs needed two third period goals in game 5 to avoid being upset by St. Louis! Brent Ashton scored with 45 seconds left to win the series. After sweeping the first first place team, the Blackhawks were no match for the North Stars, who flexed their muscles in a 4 game sweep of their own. Minnesota goes back the Campbell Conference Finals.


Smythe Division

The Flames and Kings both make relatively easy work of their lower ranked opponents. Jets fans are probably upset. After last season’s breakout performance, they finish third and are ousted in the first round! In the quintessential 1980’s playoff game, the Kings beat the Flames 8-7 in overtime in game 4 of their division final series. That game was the only win the Kings got. Calgary advances in 5!



Wales Conference Finals


New Jersey was ready for this. By the time the first period ended, they had a 3-1 lead. All three Devils goals are scored on the PP. Special teams determines game one, as New Jersey wins the opener 4-1. New Jersey comes out hot again in game two. Glenn Anderson scores two early goals, and helps the Devils to a 2-1 first period lead. The score stays that was until the Habs pulled their goalie late in the third. Brett Hull scored his 7th without a goalie to stop it. New Jersey wins 3-1.

Montreal, trailing 2-0, on the road, need something to go right. It starts with not allowing the Devils a goal in the first, and Dave Andreychuk getting his first goal of the series in the 2nd. The Habs go up 3-1 early in the third, and look like they got this thing, but Jim Pavese scores with 3 minutes left, and Mats Naslund scores a minute later, to tie it for New Jersey. Overtime! In OT, Montreal’s Steve Bozek comes through to avoid the disaster, and keep the Habs alive! 4-3 Montreal. Dave Andreychuk looks like he’s heating up. He scores twice in the first period of game 4, his 2nd and 3rd of the series, but those goals only manage to tie the game at 2. Andreychuk would complete the hat trick in the third, but New Jersey is able to tie it again late, on a Dave Hannan goal. In the 2nd straight overtime game, Mats Naslund sends the home crowd home happy, scoring 2 minutes from intermission. 4-3 Devils!

Facing elimination in game five, the Habs play their best game of the series. They score 4 times in the first, and hold New Jersey to just 19 shots. Montreal wins 6-2. As dominant as Montreal was in game five, New Jersey was better in game six. Sorry, no drama. It’s 4-0 after a period, 7-0 after two. Doug Lidster has 4 points, as does Glenn Anderson. New Jersey absolutely smokes the Habs 9-3, winning the series in 6! The Devils are going to the Stanley Cup Finals!



Campbell Conference Final


Calgary opened game one playing the physical game, outhitting the North Stars by a 2-1 margin, and drawing double the PIM’s. It did not work. Minnesota scored twice in the first 4 minutes, and eventually built up a 5-0 lead. The North Stars win the opener 6-2. Darryl Sittler scores the first goal of game two, and the North Star defense went to work. Playing with a lead, Minnesota was able to limit Calgary’s attack very efficiently. By the time Rick Middleton scored midway through the third, the game was essentially over. 4-1 North Stars win game two.

Time to see if the Flames have any fightback. Duane Sutter and Geoff Courtnall give them a 2-1 first period lead. After exchanging 2nd period goals, Calgary blows a 2 goal lead in the third, when Scott Bjugstad ties it. Overtime is needed, and in the extra frame, it’s Brent Ashton who ends up winning it. 5-4 Minnesota, they lead the series 3-0. With a quick series finish on their minds, Sergio Momesso opens the scoring for the North Stars. Calgary would respond in the 2nd, and take the lead in the third. The obvious better team though, could not be stopped. Trailing 2-1, Joel Otto, Dave Hunter and Tim Bothwell score consecutively for Minnesota. 4-2 is the final. North Stars sweep the series!

Two teams that did not have very good seasons. I’d say both these teams, were just ok. Ok is good enough this season. Infact, both teams finished with the exact same, 40-31-9 record. New Jersey is playing in their first finals. The Devils franchise have been so bad for so long. Former top pick Brett Hull became a feared goal scorer this year. The team played strong team defense, and that combo was good enough. The North Stars are the defending champs, so it’s easy to forgive them for having their worst regular season in years. They clearly are still a top team with this run to the finals. Vegas has to have Minnesota as huge favourites. They have more talent and experience. Experience has to count for something, right?!

I thought so to, but this year atleast, Messier missed the playoffs. Steve Thomas has unperformed something bad. Bobby Clarke is playing 2nd line minutes while his skills have declined to a probably 4th line role. They have no center depth, and only one decent defenseman in Jamie Macoun. It's a case where it's a two man team, and even though those two are both great, the franchise has been really bad at helping them out.

After falling behind by a goal in game two, Dave Taylor, Scott Bjugstad and Joel Otto all score in a 5 minute frame during the 2nd period, which powers Minnesota to a 4-2 win. Chris Chelios gets another 2 assists, giving him 5 points in two games.

Minnesota likes scoring in bunches. After Joel Otto opens the game three scoring, Randy Wood and Dave Taylor get goals in the next 3 minutes. 3-0 North Stars after a period. Esa Tikkanen gets one back, but Dino Ciccarelli puts it away in the third. 4-2 Minnesota wins. Looking for the sweep, Minnesota goes down early in game 4.Brett Hull gets his first of the series in the 2nd, making it 2-1 Devils. Late in the third, Dave Hindmarch ties it for the North Stars, and Dino Ciccarelli scores 30 seconds later giving them the lead. With the cup there for the taking, the Devils interupt the coronation with a response. Dave Reid scores at the 17:41 mark to tie it again. Just 22 seconds later though, Dave Taylor gives Minnesota the lead back, and with only 2 minutes to kill, the Stanley Cup!! 4-3 North Stars. Minnesota repeats!!

I have no plans to purchase 5 unless a bunch of the things i have asked about or mentioned have been taken care of. Also, i suspect there is no way to convert this game, so no, i doubt very much i will need to get the new version. I'm fine with this game and this world im in.

Mario Lemieux, on the strength of an amazing regular season, where he eclipsed 160 points, is the Hart Trophy winner. Dino Ciccarelli wins his 2nd straight Conn Smythe. Jets rookie goalie Dominik Hasek wins the Gardiner. I guarantee, with Belfour in the fold, they will do something really stupid with their goaltending. I’m surprised Christian Ruuttu and his 67 points won the rookie of the year over this years best goalie!





Bobby Orr has retired from the New York Rangers. After a 20 year career, Orr will go down as the greatest offensive defenseman in NHL history. He won 4 Pilot awards and a Conn Smythe trophy. Orr’s longevity easily surpassed his real life counterpart, but he didn’t have the kind of success or impact the real Bobby had. Still, Orr is a all time great, whose number is being retired by the Rangers. Also leaving the game this year are former Leafs standout, Peter McNab, 33 year old Blackhawk, Bobby Nystrom and 2 time champion with Minnesota, Jiri Bubla!

Yep, Winnipeg did something stupid with their goaltending.



Despite having the reigning Gardiner Trophy winner, whose 20, and having prospect Ed Belfour, and several backup quality goalies, Winnipeg decides to trade New Jersey a first round pick for their 3rd string goalie, 37 year old Chico Resch. Not gonna give any more analysis on this one. It's just beyond stupid and unrealistic.


Resch goes to Winnipeg in one of the dumbest trades in NHL history.

The North Stars send a long time franchise pillar to Philly.



Lanny McDonald, the best player in North Star history, is sent to the Flyers for youngster John Cullen. It’s probably a smart move. Minnesota gets younger, and Cullen will be a top 6 player for a while, but it’s gotta be tough for the team and the fans watching Lanny McDonald leave. Lanny had over 500 goals in around 750 games. At 33, he isn’t done. At least Lanny won two cups!!


McDonald is a Flyer.

Theo Fleury is the number one pick in the NHL draft. I’m surprised to see a player like Jimmy Carson have such a high potential while guys like Vinny Damphousse and Adam Graves look sorta pedestrian! Just an observation. Anyway, Fleury goes to Pittsburgh. The Oilers get a potential franchise defenseman in Brian Leetch. Can’t say I’m too impressed with how my Leafs drafted with two first round picks!





Phil Esposito is the lone inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Esposito was one of the most prolific scorers in NHL history. He spent his whole career in Chicago, and never won a cup. He’s third all time in goals scored with 659! Welcome to the Hall Phil Esposito!



Calgary is the first team selected in the Iron Curtian draft. They will sign 22 year old Russian winger, Andrei Lomakin. Selected 4 years ago, 119th in the draft, Lomakin has developed into a dependable, all around type of player, that looks like he could play in all situations. He looks like he will slot in on Calgary’s 3rd line to begin his career.



The Capitals are the next team selected and they will sign 20 year old Dmitri Kvatanlnov, another Russian winger. He’s younger and less talented then Lomakin, but he’s a physically gifted player, who already looks dangerous in the offensive zone. The setback is at this moment, he’s lost and defense, which is probably worse then any offense he could provide. He’s young though…
