The San Diego Padres with the first pick took a catcher that I have never heard of, Jonathan Astroth. The Brewers made up for blowing last year's draft. Last year the Brewers drafted Ed Halicki first overall and didn't sign him. This year they drafted Robin Yount (#2) and Dave Winfield (#11) in the first round.

In defense of their 1972 World Series title, the Mets have made a few moves. Nolan Ryan surprisingly wins the opening day assignment over Tom Seaver. And Jon Matlack finally makes the rotation. But will it be a permanent move? Jerry Koosman will be off the Injured List in 6 days. On opening day the rotation is Ryan (21-7, 2.08 287 Ks), Seaver(26-3, 1.55 250 Ks), Matlack (10-6 2.51), Ray Sadecki (4-3, 2.24) and Gary Gentry (7-4 2.44). Only Tug McGraw and Cal Koonce return in the bullpen. Rookies Elias Sosa, Craig Swan and Brent Strom round out the pen.
1969 World Series hero Cleon Jones was released to make room for Cecil Cooper in the outfield. John Milner also replaces Tommie Agee in centerfield to start the season. It seems like an unusual choice, when you could have Ken Singleton in center and Milner in left. Preseason predictions have the Mets finishing 90-72 and 2 games out of first place. Hopefully, they aren't as accurate as they were last season. The lineup on opening day is: 1. John Milner, CF 2. Wayne Garrett, 3B 3. Cecil Cooper, RF 4. Ken Singleton, LF 5. Donn Clendenon, 1B 6. Ken Boswell, 2B 7. Bob Watson, C 8. Tim Foli, SS Last edited by hvs1717; 06-05-2019 at 10:29 PM. |

The Mets exceeded expectations, winning 100 games and barely holding off the Pirates (99-63) to win the East. The Mets took out Houston pretty easily 3 games to 1.
In the AL, Baltimore set a new Major League Baseball Record with 113 wins finishing 19 games ahead of second place, Boston. The Twins also won their fourth division title in five years. |

After taking out Minnesota in the division series once again, the Orioles completed their historic season with a 4 games to 2 World Series win over the Mets. The Mets and Orioles have now met 3 times in the last 5 World Series, with Baltimore holding a 2-1 advantage. The win is the Orioles 3rd win in the last four years and 4th in the last six. The only thing standing in the way of a Mets dynasty has been Baltimore. The Mets have also been to 4 of the last 5 World Series. They are 2-2 with both losses to Baltimore.

Hank Aaron retired after the 1972 season. He finished his career 3rd All time with 629 home runs. Willie Mays is retiring after the 1973 season. He finished his career 2nd All time with 662 home runs. Harmon Killebrew is still playing but only hit 24 in 1973. He has 592 now at 37 years old. It looks like Ruth's record is safe for now. Frank Robinson hit 17 home runs to raise his career total to 509. |

The Padres picking #1 for the second year in a run, made a great pick as long as they can sign him. Dale Murphy should be a beast. The Brewers drafted Dave Winfield for the second straight season. One of my favorite Mets as a kid, Lee Mazzilli, was drafted by the Tigers. Willie Wilson was drafted by the Dodgers. I bet he would have been great patrolling Chavez Ravine. Pete Vuckovic was drafted by the Yankees. Pete was also a member of the Yankees in the movie Major League, when he played slugger Clu Hayward.

The next time I do one of these I may have to adjust how the players age. They all seem to be mostly playing shorter careers than in real life on the default.

So going into opening day in 1974, my Mets are favored to win the East Division once again. They have pretty much stood firm from last season, not really making any trades. Their rotation is still the best in baseball with Seaver, Ryan, Matlack, Koosman and Gentry all in their prime. The bullpen could be better but Tug McGraw and Craig Swan are solid. Their lineup is solid all the way through. They didn't make any moves to replace aging 1b Donn Clendenon so they will start the season with some guy named Joe Foy replacing him. The rest of the lineup is pretty solid:
C - Bob Watson 1B - Joe Foy 2B - Ken Boswell SS - Tim Foli 3B - Wayne Garrett LF - Ken Singleton CF - John Milner RF - Cecil Cooper Hopefully, they stay healthy the minor leagues are pretty barren at this point. |

At the All-Star break, there are few surprises. Boston is running away with the AL East. The AL West race is pretty much over with Oakland holding a 17 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Angels. The NL races are a little closer with the Mets holding a 6 1/2 game lead over the slumping Cubs and the Reds holding a 5 game lead over the preseason favorite Astros.

No surprises down the stretch. All four teams that were leading at the All Star break won their divisions. It was a pretty boring penant race. No one made any major moves before the trade deadline. The Red Sox were the best team in baseball as expected, winning 110 games. The Mets with 91 wins were the only division winner to not win 100 games.

The first round of the AL playoffs has the two best teams in baseball facing off. Both Boston, with Ray Culp (21-6, 2.04) and Gaylord Perry (20-8, 3.07) and Oakland, with Bill Hands (22-8, 3.40) and Catfish Hunter (20-7, 3.09) have two 20 game winners. Both teams also hit the ball a ton. Boston is led by MVP candidate SS Rico Petrocelli (34 hr, 134 rbi, .307), CF Reggie Smith (26 117 .297), DH Carl Yastrzemski (23 96 .295), 3B Darrell Evans (22 92 .288) and C Carlton Fisk (16 69 .275). Oakland is led by their own MVP candidate in RF Reggie Jackson (27 103 .321), CF Rick Monday (27 101 .273) and LF Joe Rudi (20 86 .261).
