Rolling the calendar back a bit on this one, as I missed it when it happened.

April 6, 2036 - Waffletown vs Redmond

While the game ended in a loss for the Syrups, there was one milestone achieved. One of the two remaining original members of the team, Freddie Lindstrom, stroked his 3000th hit in the top of the 6th off Redmond pitcher Mike Marshall.

"Can't believe 3000 came that fast." said Lindstrom later when asked about the achievement. "I didn't even know it was close until I saw the 3000 put up on the scoreboard."

Next up on the 3000 hit radar for Waffletown is Cecil Travis, who currently sits at 2992 for his career.

In an otherwise forgettable evening for fans of Waffletown, the one bright spot occurred in the top of the 6th inning when Cecil Travis picked up his 3000th career hit off Motown pitcher Justin Verlander.

"I had the count in my favor 2-0, so I knew he had to come at me. He grooved a fastball right down the pipe and made it easy." Travis said in a post game interview. "I just wish the final outcome would have been in our favor."

Despite the loss, Waffletown still sits atop the NC Central division with a league best 78-51 record.

While their record is tied for the best in the league at 80-53, there is some concern in Waffletown after they finished up their worst month of the season in August (12-14). After a month where they could do no wrong in July (20-4), it was a drastic turnaround that the team and fans hope was just a blip on the radar, and they can get back to their winning ways.

"Would be nice to be headed in the right direction going into the playoffs." said center-fielder Martin Dihigo. "Baseball is a streaky game... you don't want to be headed the wrong way when it's a win or go home series."

For the eighth straight season, the champagne flowed in the Waffletown clubhouse as the team secured another post season birth. The Syrups tied their record for most wins in a season with a 98-64 finish. Reporters noted that the celebration seemed more subdued than in prior seasons and asked longtime team member and back-up catcher Rick Ferrell why they didn't seem more excited. Ferrell smirked at the question.

"It's not that we're taking this for granted..." Ferrell replied. "...it's that we can't be satisfied with just getting here. We need to stay focused and take care of business. Otherwise those 98 wins mean nothing."

Team records:

-with the addition of some more fleet-footed players, the one offensive record to fall this season was team stolen bases (229), breaking the old record of 194 set in 2035.

-the pitching staff had an outstanding season, setting team records in ERA (3.44), IP (1481.2), low in hits allowed (1318), low in Oavg (.237) and a high in shutouts (20).

-team fielding saw two new records set (or tied): Putouts (4445), and fielding percentage (.990) which ties the record set way back in 2022

On the individual front, newcomer George Sisler made his presence known with an outstanding season. He managed to obtain enough plate appearances (509) to sneak in to the qualifications for the batting title and nabbed that with his .356 average (new team record as well, and first batting title for a Waffletown player since Johnny Pesky in 2024); and led the team in home runs (26) and RBIs (115). He also set new team records in slugging (.616), OPS (1.022), and OPS+ (174).

Sliding Billy Hamilton set a new team record for runs scored with 126 (breaking his old record of 120); and Cool Papa Bell set a new team record for stolen bases with 92.

On the mound, Eddie Plank joined the 20 win club for the team with a solid 20-6 record and 2.87 ERA. In the bullpen, Paul Dean blew away opposing batters at a torrid pace, picking up 117 strikeouts in just 89.2 innings and held batters to a measly .198 average (which was only 2nd best on the club as Jack Stivetts held opponents to a .178 average).

Waffletown will host the Luckenbach Armadillos in the NLDS. During the regular season, the two teams met 7 times with Luckenbach taking the series 5 games to 2.

Mort Cooper pitched a masterful game 4 in the NLDS, spreading 6 hits over 9 innings to earn the complete game shutout victory and clinch the series 3 games to 1.

While the team celebrated in the visitor's clubhouse, it was still a slightly subdued atmosphere.

"We finally got over that first hump...." said Freddie Lindstrom as he popped a bottle of champagne. "...but there are still 8 more wins to get... gotta stay focused."

First baseman George Sisler picked up the series MVP award thanks to his impressive 3 home runs, 5 rbis and .500 average

Waffletown will head home to host Shasta in the NLCS. The two teams met 6 times during the regular season with Waffletown winning the series 4 games to 2.

Once again the champagne flowed freely in the Waffletown clubhouse as the Syrups celebrated their LCS victory over Shasta, 4 games to 2. Third baseman Freddie Lindstrom addressed the team during the celebration.

"Enjoy it, but keep your eyes on the prize." Lindstrom said. "We still have four more wins to get."

Harry Heilmann earned the LCS MVP with 2 home runs, 6 rbis and a .370 average

Waffletown will head to Mankato to face the top ranked Moondogs. The two teams met four times during the regular season, splitting the series 2-2.

While the series seemed lopsided as Waffletown lost 4 games to 1, four of the five games were decided by a single run.

"A different bounce one way or another and the entire series could have gone the other way." said catcher Ernie Lombardi.

Now the reality sets in for the team and its fans that next season will be the team's first foray into the upper echelon of the Perfect leagues. After a successful run in Diamond leagues (6 years, 6 playoff appearances, 569-403 record), management hopes the team they have assembled will be ready for the challenge.

Perhaps it was a case of nervous anticipation of facing the increased competition of the Perfect leagues for the first time, but Waffletown looked like a deer caught in the headlights for the first week of the new season. After six straight 90+ win seasons in Diamond league, the Syrups stumbled to an 0-7 start before the finally picked up their first win of the 2038 season.

As April came to a close and the season pushed a few games into May, Waffletown has finally pulled their collective craniums from their posteriors and evened their record at 13-13. What's most surprising is, that .500 record is good enough right now to earn them a share of the NC Central lead.

At the plate, Cecil Travis is on fire with a .374 average (2nd in the league); and Harry Heilmann has done a 180 degree turn from his rather dismal season of 2037 (.242 average) and is off to a much better start batting .333 with 4 home runs and 18 rbis.

At the all star break, Waffletown finds themselves in rather unfamiliar territory. After a long string of successful seasons in the lower tiers, the Syrups sit at 46-49 just past the halfway mark of their first season in Perfect league. Most fans are actually pleasantly surprised at the team's performance against the top tier competition. The fact the team is in a division where no team seems to want the lead also helps, as Waffletown sits in second place, only 5 games back of the lead.

The one bright spot so far this season has been the performance of second baseman Cecil Travis at the plate. He currently ranks 3rd in the league with a .335 average (and was as high as .370 in the first week of June).

While the war chest has a decent amount of funds available, management knows it will take significantly more to acquire a quality player who will make an impact at this level; so the team will have to power through any struggles and make the most of what they already have.

I don't know if being around .500 in the perfect league is a good thing or a bad thing. I think a case can be made for both. I'm hoping the best for Waffletown regardless.

BTW, how has your Tiny Bonham done the past few seasons in diamond/gold? Just curious.

When the season started, no one knew exactly what to expect from the cream-of-the-crop competition of the Perfect league. Throughout the season, Waffletown see-sawed back and forth, hovering around the .500 mark but thanks to being placed in a division where no team took control, they were always in contention. When the dust settled after 162 games, the Syrups found themselves with a record of 82-80.... and tied for the division lead with rival Harlem.

In the win-or-go-home game 163, Waffletown's Eddie Plank squared off against Harlem's Walter Johnson. The Syrups only gave up 2 runs in the game, but couldn't get a single run across the plate and lost the game 2-0.

"Before the season started if you told me we'd end up with a record above .500 in our first year in the top tier league, I would've been satisfied to take it." said catcher Ernie Lombardi. "Now that we had a chance to actually win the division in our first run through and missed it by a single win...." he paused a moment and bowed his head. "...this one's gonna sting for a long time."

final notes:

Cecil Travis had a solid season in the mix for the batting crown for a good part of the year before dropping back a bit and finishing out the season with a .309 average.

Cool Papa Bell (77 steals) and Sliding Billy Hamilton (73 steals) finished 1-2 in the stolen base department; and Hamilton racked up another triple digit runs scored season with 112 (his 10th season scoring 100+ runs)

A lone bright spot on the pitching staff was reliever Paul Dean, who went 7-0 out of the pen with a 2.76 ERA, 101 IP, 137K, .204 opp avg and 12.2 K/9. Management is considering moving Dean into the starting rotation to see if he can perform as well in that role.

At the all star break in their second season in the top tier league, the Syrups appear to be hopelessly stuck in their sticky namesake. While the team and fans expected some fierce competition, they were hoping the team would be better prepared for the challenge. After a so-so month of April (10-15), and a slightly better month in May (13-14), the team appeared to turn the corner in June and managed to pull out a winning month (15-12). If the season had ended there, at least it would have finished on an upswing.

Unfortunately, the season isn't three months long and the schedule continued into July. As the temperature of summer rose, the Syrups record went in the opposite direction, and the team melted into a pool of goo and oozed to a 3-15 record, with 7 games remaining in the month. While some critic think the team would be best served to throw in the towel and shoot for a relegation spot to head back to Diamond league, the players think differently.

"We earned our way here..." said left fielder Billy Hamilton. "...and we know we're better than our record reflects. It would be easy to tuck tail and run back to the lower league..." he said. He paused and glanced around the clubhouse. While some players hung their heads in frustration after another loss, there was still a glint in their eyes that they still had a fight left in them. "...I don't think you'll find one guy on our squad who would be satisfied with that."

The lone bright spot for the team to this point has been the play of first baseman George Sisler, who currently sits 1 home run away from tying the single season team record of 29 set by Jo-Jo Moore in the inaugural season of 2020.

The sophomore slump hit Waffletown in their second season in the Perfect tier. After a disastrous month of July (6-19), the team could either pack it in for the rest of the year and plummet to the relegation zone, or get their heads straight and focus on getting on the right track. A decent turn-around in August (15-12) was followed by another acceptable month in September (16-11) to finish out the year on a positive note. While their 76-86 record wasn't anything to crow about, it was good enough to pull them out of the basement of the AC Central and put them in fourth place.

"It's something to build on for next season." said starting pitcher Dizzy Dean. "Lord knows I can't do much worse, so the only way for me to go is up... I hope."

the biggest bright spot for the season was the play of George Sisler. He broke the Syrups long standing team record for home runs in a single season (29, held by Jo Jo Moore and set in the inaugural 2020 season), with 36 of his own this year. He also became the Syrups first ever 30/30 player with 36 home runs and 30 stolen bases.

The team also set a new record for most overall home runs (145), which broke the old record of 124 set in 2023.

As their third season in the Perfect tier begins, Waffletown hopes their squad can play up to their potential and make a push for their first post season birth at the top level. The team has remained unchanged since the call-up of Edd Roush, and while management has a decent war chest built up, it's still short of what would be necessary to bring in a player who would be an upgrade over what they already have. Management continues to watch the offer sheets on the off chance a bargain deal shows up.

As the month of April comes to a close, Waffletown is fairing better this season than last, as they roll into May with a winning record (14-13) and sit just 2 games back of the AC West division lead.

At the plate, Cool Papa Bell is swinging a consistent bat with a .300 average and is taking advantage of those hits with a league leading 16 stolen bases. At the back end of the lineup, Ernie Lombardi has been swinging an equally hot bat with a solid .343 average, 7 home runs and 20 rbis.

On the mound, Lefty Gomez (4-2, 3.58) and Eddie Plank (3-1, 3.12) are off to decent starts; and Wilcy Moore (3 saves, 0.71) has been his reliable self in the closer position.

Management hopes some of the other players who are struggling to get into a good groove find their mojo and the team begins to click like they did during their run in the Diamond tier.

(and since it's been awhile, a team picture for the 2040 Waffletown Syrups)

August 10, 2040:

In another up-and-down season at the Perfect tier, Waffletown pulls out a 4-2 win at home against division rival Weston Pointe.

Waffletown fans were treated to a special moment in the bottom of the 7th when left fielder Sliding Billy Hamilton connected on a pitch from Weston Pointe reliever Will Harris and notched his 3000th career hit.

"Definitely a special moment, and to have the opportunity to achieve it in front of our fans makes it even moreso." said Hamilton after the game.

In a late season move, Waffletown brought aboard two new pitchers to try and bolster the squad for a potential post season run. Joining the squad are:

SP - Smoky Joe Wood (97) - 1912

and

RP - Sad Sam Jones (92) - 1921

to make room for the new players, Hugh Casey and Claude Passeau have been sent to the reserves. Casey joined the squad in 2020 and spent the majority of his career as a reliever/closer for the club. Passeau joined the team in 2022 and moved between the starting rotation and the bullpen. Management would like to extend their thanks for Casey's and Passeau's many years of service.

In yet another example of "every game counts", Waffletown endured an up-and-down season where they struggled out of the gate with a decent April (14-13), only to have a dismal May (9-20). June was a bit better (11-15) but still sub-par if they wanted to make something of this season. As the summer temps rose, so did the level of play in Waffletown as the team started a slow climb in the standings, finishing 14-10 in July. In August, the team caught fire with an impressive 20-7 mark. The Syrups cooled a bit in September (14-12), but when the dust settled after the regular season ended, Waffletown found themselves tied for the AC West division lead.

Sadly for Waffletown, they failed to take care of business in the tie-breaker against Cigar City and fell 10-6 (and even worse, they had a 6-0 lead in the game).

At the plate, George Sisler and Harry Heilmann had solid seasons in the 3-4 positions; with Sisler leading the club in average (.283) home runs (30) and rbis (116); and Heilmann reaching the 100 rbi mark for the 8th consecutive season.

On the mound, Lefty Gomez had a tale-of-two-seasons type of year, starting out 5-7 with a 4.34 era before turning things around to finish out at 19-11 and a 3.48 era. At the back-end of the rotation, Wilcy Moore had an outstanding season, going 4-3 with 34 saves and a minuscule 0.96 era.

Management looks forward to next season and hopes that new acquisition Smoky Joe Wood can make an impact at the top of the starting rotation.
