Why does my team always have great ZR but horrible defensive efficiency?

For example, so far this season we are first in ZR but dead last in defense efficiency. Usually we are in top three in ZR but down near ninth or tenth in defense efficiency. What causes this to happen? I do prioritize range in fielding, which results in nearly all blue in DEF (exception is at first and third, where I am at 74% and 72% respectively), but I do not prioritize the error stat. Could this be the reason?

Could be park factors. A good defense in a hitters park would certainly do it.

Bingo, that must be it. I have same settings for lefties and righties, BA: 1.1, HR: .9, doubles and triples 1.5.

Oh, yes, you did the posts about the 3 experimental teams. My team is designed to be a small ball team, I got inspiration for it from your small ballers, except that I am not prioritizing flyball pitchers, so my whole defense has to be pretty good.

If you're prioritizing range and not really considering error rating, this might be causing this imbalance you're seeing. My take on ZR is that it measures how a fielder makes above average plays. DEF is more just how often balls put into play are turned into outs. I often see in historical replays, players with high range but low error rating will do better in ZR than DEF.

Your pitching might also impact DEF. If the balls being put in play are hard hit line drives and grounders, fielders will have a harder time turning those into outs.

My team also has high ZR and low DEF, likely due to my park factors.

Anyone know how OOTP calculates WAR for defense? Is it based entirely on ZR or some combination of ZR and other stats? I have Vlad Jr. in my single-player save playing in RF with fairly poor Range, but decent Error and a good Arm Rating. Just wondering if his WAR calculation is getting overly hurt because of his ZR stats.
