Are they just cosmetic?

No, they are not just cosmetic. Larger players are more likely to have more power and less speed, for one.

Also, shorter players (<6'0") are less likely to develop as pitchers.

Thanks. Do you happen to know if heavy players have a tendency to decline/break down faster (or, maybe be more workhorse-like) than "regular" players?

Large players are less agile and will decline more rapidly as middle infielders as they age.

Here's why they're somewhat important. H & W are used in body mass calculations that ootp uses for some of the player ratings as players age. Body mass can go up, down or stay the same as players age. It's random.
