Paris trade

Paris, not a team that heavily trades, made a deal to acquire depth in the Starting Pitcher department. Despite having the best overall starting pitching, Paris picked up disgruntled veteran John Huchet in exchange for promising first baseman, 23 year old Jean Francois.

Huchet is in the last year of his contract so the 36 year old is likely to finish the season in Paris and head to free agency. His lifetime 135 - 163 record is somewhat pedestrian, but his 2.61 FIP during the present season was enough to take a chance on the vet. With 4 quality pitches he is less a risk and more an asset.

Le Morne Rouge at Paris

The Toucans and Artists gave the Parisian fans a very entertaining 3 days of baseball.

Game 1
10th inning tie game, Michel singles and steals second. Rather than walk Mercier with one out and pitch to Henri, the Toucans commit the cardinal sin. Mercier lines a base hit and it's game over. The win goes to CL extraordinaire, Gerald Gallet who is now 4-0 with a ridiculous 0.36 ERA

Game 2
Rodrigue DeShamps, who lead the league in HR's with 29 last season, may have been elected the POG for the Toucans but it was Herve Delage delivering the real damage. DeShamps did hit two homers, but, Delage went 3 for 5 with a home run leading the Artists to an 8-6 win.

Game 3
A sweep was not in the cards as it was Pierre Lopes who was doing the dealing today. Lopes logged 7 IP allowing 5 hits and 1 run. His battery mate, Alex Guiterrez called an excellent game and nailed Yamada trying to run a H&R with Mercier at the plate. The W to Lopes and the S to Delannoy (12) who tossed 2 scoreless frames for the Toucans.

What a tight series! Not only were the total runs nearly identical for both teams but the hits were extremely close too.

Paris at Cap Chevalier

Game 1
36 year old Claude Cornet out dueled Julien Henri as the Waves pulled off a 3-1 win despite being out hit 11 to 7. 8th place hitter 2b Tom Sellier had a pair of hits and rbi's to lead the charge. Cornet ups his record to 4-8 while Henri slips back to 5-7/ 3.32 ERA.

Game 2
New acquisition SP John Huchet won his first start for the Artists despite having mediocre stuff. The Artists tallied 13 hits and put up 5 on the board good enough for a 5-4 win. Mercier and Yamada each went 3 for 4 with a pair knocked in. Huchet got POG for his 6 IP, 3 runs/2 earned.

Game 3
Veteran 38 year old SP Pete Brophy had the Artists bats flailing as he kept them at bay through 6 innings, tied 2-2. But, Paris caught up with the wily Brophy the third time through order and completely dismantled Brophy and the relievers that followed.

POG Julien Henri had 3 hits including a HR to go along with his 4 runs batted in. Herve's double to the wall emptied the bases of both runners putting Paris up 4-2. Julien's HR came in the early innings with one on board. De Rooj with the win is now 8-3.

Marseille at Paris

Game 1
Paris had it locked down with a 2-0 lead and one out in the 9th. Dave Corronado on his 119th pitch lost the shutout on a solo jack by Ayala. But, with Gallet coming to the mound the smart money was still on Paris. Gallet gave up a single and then, a PH homer to Charrier, his first of the year. Gallet got his first loss and in the process his second BS. The Soleis win a big game, 3-2.

Game 2
Another 1 run game but this time the Artists win 4-3. Paris went right back to their closer in the 9th and Gerard Gallet came through retiring the final 2 outs for his 13th save. Matthieu Michel connected for his 11th home run of the year.

Game 3
Julien Henri had plenty of run support as the Artists pounded on 16 hits while building a 10-1 lead after 8 innings. Some casual pitching management by Paris, sticking with Henri to the end. allowed for the score to end up making it appear a close game. The Soleis scored 6 in the top of the 9th courtesy of Mathon's grand slam and Pithon's 2 run dinger. But, Henri gets the deserved win and is now 6-7. Julien went 3 for 5 and Herve hit his 9th dinger to go along with a pair of singles. Delage named player of the game and the Artists take another series in the French division.

Vic Cosman

One of my fav players in the FBL is winding down his career. He has one year with a player option that he is very likely to except. He's been a workhouse/stud/leader his entire career with Le Diamant. The face of the franchise especially with Henri moving on to Paris. But, he didn't take a back seat to anyone when it came to contribution to the Diamonds cause.

Paris at Le Diamant

The gang of four revisit Le Diamant for a 3 game series pitting some of the best players in the league against each other. The four former Diamonds are Herve DeLage, Laurant Mercier, Mattheiu Michel, and Julien Henri.

Game 1
All Paris as the Artists win it 8-0. John Huchet, new Paris Sp, ups his record to 2-0 with the fine 3 hit 7 inning effort. Laurant Mercier goes 3 for 4 and Bob Juhan, playing for Henri, chips in with 3 hits. Luis Sanchez sees his fine record fall to 9-3.

Game 2
A close game from start to finish with the difference being a Laurant Mercier error that allowed for the final run of the game to be scored in the sixth inning. Le Diamant wins it, 5-4. Each team rapped out 9 hits with Lamy stroking the only homer for Paris.

Game 3
Paris was up against the ageless one, Vic Cosman. Dave Coronado, now 10-3, could not compete against the veteran Diamond who held Paris to 1 run and 3 hits. No walks, 6 hits, and a complete game. Vintage Cosman gives the Diamonds the series win. It was the first series loss in 3 weeks for Paris.

The K King

Cole Burke, 1969 Pitcher of the Year recipient, and 3 time Championship player, leads the league in K's, but only by 3. Antonio Balbuenia (Mon) and Herve Villard (Nice) trail by just three. Is this the year Burke is dethroned? I'm not betting on it happening.

From the Journal of Julien Henri

June 18th, 1972

I never dreamed I'd have such a rich and rewarding career in baseball. It seems like just a few years ago I was hoping to work myself up from Single A Basse Pointe to the La Vauclin Parrots.

Twelve years into organized baseball and I'm amazed at how lucky I am. Herve and I, best of friends, have been able to play our entire careers together. We are even signed to contracts that would allow us to be free agents in 2 more years, if Herve declined his player option. It's something we've discussed as we often share our baseball and personal goals.

Regarding baseball, we both might like to someday play for a team in the only country we've not been a part of the FBL, the Canadian League, specifically the french speaking eastern portion. We loved our Martinique experience more than we could ever express, and, Paris, who wouldn't love to play under the lights....in the City OF Lights?

I haven't written much of late, but Alize and I plan on getting married at the end of the season. Her job takes her back and forth from Paris to Montreal. I've always loved Montreal, an amazing city in its own right. She is living in the old part of the city near the ball park we play in when visiting. We have a 3 game set in 6 days in with the Royals, so, yeah, that is big on my calendar.

But, baseball for Paris is what matters right now. We are going for 4 straight years of the playoffs and first place in the France league, and we are also defending the first Parisian championship from 1971.

Lots of good teams this year so we're going to have to keep our levels steady for now, then up them for the post-season.

Expedition at Artists

An entertaining series in Paris with Xavier Rolland and company in town for 3 games. Here are the recaps:

Game 1
Rookie Monnet ripped a double down the line in the 10th enabling the Artists to walk it off, 3-2. Merlin gave Paris a solid 7.1 IP allowing 2 runs (1 earned) and super closer G. Gallant gets the win, his fifth. Jean Monnet is subbing for Laurant Mercier who, some might say prematurely, was sent to the DL.

Game 2
Our boy Julien on the mound for the 8-2 Artist win, finally getting Henri to .500 as a pitcher (7-7). POG Henri complimented his fine 8 inning pitching performance (1 earned) by going 2 for 4 with a double, scoring one, and batting in one. Herve Delage hit his 9th of the year as part of his 2 for 4 day.

Game 3
A close one but Xavier Rolland twice beat out infield hits with 2 outs and that was enough fuel for the 2-1 Expedition win. Amar Thomas scattered 10 hits over 7 innings, but it was reliever Roland Leroy with the win, two scoreless innings over the course of the 8th and 9th.
The top 4 in the Artist line up had 8 hits but Paris left as many on base which contributed to the loss, nullifying an excellent pitching performance by John Huchet. It was the veteran's first loss since coming over in a trade from Giverny.

The Seniors

The most senior active pitcher and batter are featured. Each are slightly north of 40 and have distinguished careers. Curiously, no awards for LaCroix and three Gold Gloves for Guilbert.

Guilbert with his +49 WAR is certainly a candidate for the Hall which is scheduled to open this off season. Antoine has spent his entire career in Anse d'Arlet.
Ed note: I will be there tomorrow.

In a league that doesn't feature prodigious home run totals LaCroix has an impressive total. Ludvic Le Bihan holds the record with 315.

Paris at Anse d'Arlet

The Artists begin the first leg of their road trip with 3 in Martinique before playing 9 straight games vs. Canadian teams.

Game 1
Six in the 9th gave the Artists a 7-1 win over the Sting Rays. Julien Henri had a single, SF, and 3 RBI's. Edwin de Rooj took care of business on the mound as he ups his record to 9-3 with the 8 IP effort.

Game 2
Dave Coronado (11-2) teamed up with CL Gallant (1.2 IP) to win a tight one, 4-3. Two RBI's for Matthieu Michel.

Game 3
Denis Merlin, got 1.2 solid innings of relief from Ochoa (H) and Gallet (15 Saves) as Paris completed the sweep winning, 4-1. Paris pounded out 12 hits including two by Julien Henri. Lamy's 3 run homer gave the Artists the early lead.

So, it's off to eastern Canada, next.

Paris at Montreal

Paris (50-25) at Montreal (36-39)

Game 1
Julien Henri gets the start and he delivers. He goes 8.1 IP allowing just 6 hits and one run. At the plate, a double and a grand slam. Julien, POG, now has an 8-7 record and is batting .306 with 6 HR's and 42 batted in.
Final is Paris 6, Montreal 1.

Game 2
A close one that saw Paris SP John Huchet struggle a bit as he couldn't make it out of the 6th. A sterling bullpen performance and 2 late runs in the 8th combined to give the Artists a 4-3 win. Gallet got another save and 8th place hitter, Kobayashi, who has coming on with the bat of late, went 2 for 4 with 3 big runs batted in.

Game 3
Laurant Mercier, fresh off the DL, singled in his first at bat. Both Michel and Kobayashi (HR) had 2 hits apiece, and Edwin DeRooj was the winning pitcher. Another save for Gallet, his 17th. Joel Coduert, having a good year for the Royals, saw his record drop to 9-4.

So, the Artists win all 3 games and head to Quebec for 3 games against the Snake Eyes, owner of the 4th best record in the FBL and leading the Canada League by 1 game over the Expedition.

Montreal's Tardieu to hang em up

Daniel Tardieu announced his plans to retire at the end of the season. Eleven of his twelve seasons were spent in Canada including two stings with the Royals. He won the coveted Pitcher of the Year Award in 1963.

Power in the College Ranks

Luc Richer led the French Collegiate League with 19 homers. Richer is a guy on everyone's radar, and a possible #1 pick. In April he had a 3 homer day at the plate against Lille College. Luc also owns a 4 home run game streak.
The 20 year old projects big on that he hits with power, for average, and walks more than he K's.

Quebec at Paris

Riding a 6 game win streak the Artists get ready for the Snake Eyes 3 game series.

Game 1
Quebec outhits Paris 10 to 5 but lose the game, 4-3. Herve Delage had a big hit late in the game to plate the tying and winning runs.

Game 2
This time Quebec outhits Paris 11 to 6, and they still lose 5-2. The 12 stranded runners didn't help the Snake Eye cause.

Game 3
In the final contest Paris finally out hit Quebec (7 to 4) and they won, 4-1. Julien Henri logged 8 innings and got the win. Henri hit his 7th homer of the year to go with his single. But, it was Julien's masterful pitching that earned him POG. Zero walks and 11 K's. He struck out the side in the third inning. Interestingly, there were 13 fly ball outs while Henri was on the mound, and just one groundout (he had a K and the runner was safe on the PB).

So, Paris finishes out the month on a tear winning the final 9 games.

Paris at St. Michel

After closing out June on a nine game tear the Artists arrive in St. Michel to take on the last place Nobels.

Game 1
SP John Huchet, after a brief hiccup in his last start, bears down on the Nobel bats and get rewarded with his 3rd win as an Artist (11-4 overall). Paris win it 5-1. Catcher J. Girard, not known for a canon behind the plate, nails both would be base runners while the Nobels boot the ball 3 times in the field.

Game 2
Five runs in the 8th and 9th give the Artists a nice lead that they almost coughed up thanks to some casual relief 'work' in the bottom of the inning. Masson couldn't get anyone out and was lifted after a single and a walk. On comes super closer Gallant and he promptly delivers one in the zone of Elizondo who crushes his first homer of the year in a pinch hit role. Gallant settled down and retired the next three affording DeRooj the win (11-4).

Game 3
The streak has reached eleven in a row. It's Corronado (11-3) vs. Giraud (2-8). On paper it looks like all Paris. The old saying being that the game is not won on paper but on the field, holds true one more time. It's Giraud tossing 120 pitches and getting the key outs when he needs them. Combined with de Rooj's sub standard effort, the Nobels cruise to an easy 5-1 win. Up and coming hitting star Bert Kreuger made his presence known to the Artists going 3 for 4 with a HR.

Nice at Paris

The Orchids may be in a distant second place but they are also a team fighting to reach the post-season. That grit and determination bore fruit in the three game set in Paris.

Game 1
Merlin and Yarbrough hooked up in a very close pitchers duel the difference being a pair of Orchid errors allowing for 2 unearned runs in the 3-2 win for the Artists. Julien Henri had a pair of hits and scored a run for Paris. Light hitting Paris catcher Garcia had the game winning a hit. He's batting just .170.

Game 2
Julien Henri took the mound for Paris but it was Herve Villiard who stole the show as he befuddled Artist batters all day long by pitching to contact. Just 2 K's in 88 pitches but his efficiency paved the way for the bullpen to close it out. Nice wins it, 4-2, and Henri is now 9-8 on the season.

Game 3
The most entertaining game of the set that saw the Orchids in control early as they built up a 5-0 lead. A furious 7th inning rally by the Artists tied it up with 3 runs, and with the sacks juiced, Nice somehow managed to put out the fire.
It paid off, as the Orchids exploded with a 4 spot in the top of the 9th securing the series win at the expense of the Artists home crowd fans.

Nice is now tied with Anse d'Arlet for the WC spot.

Paris at Giverney

Game 1
POG Julien Henri goes 3 for 5 including a triple and a homer as the Artists win by a score of 7-4 in 10 innings. Gallet (6-1) gets the W in relief and Dupin earns his 3rd save.

Game 2
Julien picks up 3 more hits as the Artists rally late and win in 10 innings, 7-5.
Gallet gets his 20th save.

Game 3
The difference between a sweep and winning 2/3 came down to a bullpen melt down in the 10th, with Gaudreau the chief culprit. After rallying for the 3 in top half, the Artists bullpen could only retire one batter with the winning run scoring on a Gallet wild pitch.

Will Henri earn an unprecedented 4th MVP?

The remarkably consistent 28 year old from Martinique is in the running for a 4th MVP achievement. His pitching numbers, discounting W-L, are close to what he posted last season depending on the metric you are using.

His batting numbers might be a bit better than the season prior.

His fielding numbers are near flawless, as he has + ZR at CF, RF, and P. Henri has not committed an error all season. He has 3 assists, including one in the most recently played game that cut down the winning run at the plate in the 9th.

All makes for interesting discussion, but, the only thing on Julien Henri's mind is winning the FBL championship for Paris. They are the favorites to repeat, but, the post-season is famous for breaking baseball hearts.
