Scouting Report - Quebec at Paris

The Artists return home and will face Quebec for the 3 game set. To date the pitching is ahead of the hitting for Paris as the SP's rate #2 and the RP's #3 in the twelve team league.

But, when it comes to scoring runs the team is 6th. Unusual for the Artists as offense has been their calling card since the acquisition of Mercier and Michel. Third base is becoming an area of concern as Bruno Proust is hitting below the Mendoza line at .146. If he's not careful, there may be a new term for sub .200 and it won't be named after Mario. A snapshot of Bruno's last 2 years + is listed below. 25 year old Juan Bonet, obtained from Montreal last year, is hitting .333 for the Saint-Nazaire Golden Orioles in AAA. Rumor has it that he is very close to getting the call.

The Quebec Series

The Artists took the broom to Quebec as they played near flawless ball upon coming home to the City of Lights. Henri was not in the pitching rotation, but, not to worry. De Rooij, Coronado, and Merlin took care of business as Paris outscored Quebec 18-7.

Paris relegated slumping 3B Bruno Proust to the bench and moved Laurant Mercier back to his original position at the hot corner. This created room for 24 year old Pascal Blanchet to take over right field. Pascal definitely has tools and showcased one of them when he gunned down a Snake Eye at the plate from deep right field.

Julien Henri went 3 for 8 and raising his B.A. to .326. Paris has the most wins in the Francais Baseball league with 10 (5 losses).

The St. Michel Series

It's almost easy to forget this is a franchise in the FBL. Who are they? Where do they play?

Part of Ontario, this franchise lives under the wire, at least since 1962 when they qualified for their only post-season appearance. Those were the days that Fabrice Charlet imposed his will on visiting pitchers as he supplied the power to the Nobels his entire career. He was actually drafted by Le Diamant, but rejected their offer only to sign with a team that has languished in anonymity since that point.

St. Michel is off to a good start. Anytime this franchise is above .500 it is deemed good. They are speedy on the base paths especially after signing LeFevre (Ottawa free agent) to lead off. The problem is Lefevre is hitting only .155.

Yvonnick Rousell is the #1 SP on the team yet most baseball observers consider him no more than a middle of the rotation guy. Elliot Giquel provides middle of the line up pop.

Realistically, it could be another long season for the St. Michel faithful. This series will take place in St. Michel at the St. Michel Grounds ball park.

Paris at St. Michel

The Artists visited eastern Canada for a 3 game set with St. Michel and walked away with two wins and one loss. The opener was a 3-2 defeat with Julien Henri on the mound for Paris. It was tough one to swallow for the Artists as they led for most of the contest.

At 12-6 Paris has the best overall record in the FBL. They have strengthened their bench with the addition of Blanchet, Yamada, and Juhan. Yamada and Juhan are seeing time in the OF with the benching of Proust. Laurant Mercier is handling most of the third base duties, for now. He has not committed any errors and has a modest +0.9 ZR.

25 year old 1B Roger Lamy keeps getting more and more offensive minded driving in runs in his opportunities. He has 14 RBI's and leads the club. Lead off man, Mattheu Michel is second with 12. Michel has scored 12 runs, too. But, it's Herve Delage with 13 runs scored that leads the Artists.

Henri, Lamy, and Michel are tied for the highest batting average, .333.

Scouting Report - Nice at Paris

It's back to France for the Artists to take the Orchids who have evolving into the closest thing to a French rival over the past few seasons. The Artists will have to face the ace of the staff, Alix Billard. Almost a play on words their 1-2 punch is Billard and Villard.

Henri, off to a 1-3 start, hopes to start cracking a few W's. Coming off an 18-7 season, the ace of the staff is not happy about how his outings have concluded. To date, his 3.69 is the highest on the staff.

Nice at Paris

The highly anticipated showdown in Paris did not disappoint as the first place Artists entered the series with a two game lead over the up and coming Orchids. Nice was coming off a successful three game series where they swept the Herons in closely contested games.

Paris SP Dave Cornonado shut down the Orchid offense in game one allowing just two hits as the Artists won it 2-0. Henri and Kobayashi each had a run batted in. Julien went 2 for 4.

Alix Billiard was a difference maker as he upped his record to 5-0. Billiard completely befuddled the Paris batters in six innings of work. The bullpen was in lock down mode as three relievers combined to keep Paris off the board and just like that Nice won 1-0 and evened the series.

The third game had Julien Henri on the mound so Paris had to like their chances. But, for Henri, he did not have his best stuff and labored through 7 innings tossing over 130 pitches. Journeyman, 37 year old William Mangin, made it all look so easy. In his only appearance of the seasons the crafty vet through 145 pitches and a complete game leading Nice to a 5-2 win.

With these last two wins Nice is just 1 game back of Paris. Henri sees his record slip to 1-4. We are still in April and Julien gave up just 7 losses in all of last season. The 18-7 record is but a distant memory as Paris is struggling to gain some separation from their first real competition for the pennant in a number of years.

edit note: Henri in the write up of game 3 is actually 1-4, not 4-1.

Paris falls in the standings

The Paris Artists traveled to Giverney to take on the last place Herons but it was Giverney who looked like the stronger team.

Edwin deRooij looked brilliant for Paris in the middle game. Other than that, Paris put up little resistance to the last place Heron's. The Artists managed to score just five runs for the entire series. Giverney entered the series with an 8-14 record, second worst in the FBL.

Next Series vs LMR

The Paris arms will be working in the high altitude of Le Morne Rouge against the most potent offense in the league. The Toucans are beginning to realize their offensive potential as they have unleashed a barrage of offensive bats, particularly at the top of the order through the middle.

Bertrand, Binet, and Connors will be a formidable trio for the Artist staff as they are hitting for average and power. Puech, who bats second, is very selective at the plate and is adept at getting on base in front of the big bashers. Throw in lead off batter, Frank Dorey (.353 BA), and you've got the makings of a big inning every other inning.

Veteran Pitcher to Retire

Canadian fans, and FBL ones alike, will be watching Daniel Tardieu for the final year. An original of the FBL, he has announced his intention to retire at the end of the year.

He played all of his career, except the rookie one, in Canada. He donned the Snake Eye and Royals uniforms being a part of the latter on two occasions.

Taridieu has twice been named pitcher of the month, once pitcher of the year, and was a part of two championship teams. His 133-78 W/L record and 2.96 FIP speaks for itself.

Sorry- I can't recall right now, but is there an All-Star game in the FBL?
If so, I'm surprised that Tardieu hasn't been named to any All-Star squads.

Unfortunately, no. There are 3 Divisions in the FBL so no real way of dividing things up geographically.

Ah, of course. Hadn't thought that one through.
Hmm, now I'm envisioning some kind of round robin series of All-Star games to decide the best All-Star team of the 3. But I know that's silly and complicated for little reward.

Julien...another Start..another L

As improbable as it seems Julien Henri lost his fifth straight start in the mountains of Le Morne Rouge. Julien, after his opening day win in Le Diamant, can't seem to right the ship when it comes to earning the W.

OK, so 1-5 looks weak and at first glimpse which prompts the question, 'what is wrong'? To answer it, you have to drill down a bit into the other stats. In Henri's case, and you can make a case for him, he's actually pitching pretty close to his lifetime numbers. In truth, he's having a good year on the mound (see graphic).

While it's fun to follow the Henri numbers from both sides of the dish, J.H. would tell you it's all about the team, the Paris Artists. How is the team doing?, is the question.

Mixed results might be one answer, but only because the bar is set so high. When you are the champs of the FBL the only encore is a repeat. Is 16-11 a good record? It's relative to who you are are. The Nice Orchids think it is a good record because they know they are tied with Paris for first place in the France League.

The Anse d'Arlet Sting Rays think 16-11 is a great record. They know they are one game up on Le Diamant and in first place ahead of the Diamands for the first time since anyone can remember.

The larger picture may be that this years FBL teams are overall stronger than any other point in recent memory. Teams that have struggled for years are posting winning records and only two teams, Cap Chevalier and Giverney, appear over matched. At 11-16 the Herons are hardly out of it, too.

This sets the stage for the most competitive season in recent years. It's no longer Le Diamant, Ottawa, Quebec, Cap Chevalier, and Paris as the post-season picks. The field has been expanded to as many as ten teams, at least at this juncture of the season.

Returning to the just concluded series in Le Morne Rouge, the teams split the first two games in very close contests before Paris rolled over the Toucans in the final game as their offense finally showed some spark. They tallied 17 hits, 3 apiece for Kobayashi and Yamada (both below Mendoza line batters), as Paris won 10-1.

Note: The Henri pitching line is for the game 2 loss, not the 3rd game that was pitched by Sam Smith.

The Cap Chevalier Series

It can't be easy for Cap Chevalier fans as their ball club has fallen on hard times in 1972. They have been an exemplar franchise since the launching of the league. They win, they make money,

The Waves have only had one GM in their entire history, Julien Marcel. The 59 year old has done a remarkable job with this team located on the north eastern corner of Martinique. Marcel always wanted to prove that Cap Chevalier could be more than just sandy beaches and palm trees. He wanted to build a baseball team that would capture the hearts of the locals and he has been successful.

To date, they have the worst record in the league. Aside from Paris, they have the lowest rated farm system in the FBL. It might be survival time for Marcel and baseball fans can have a short memory when it comes to wins and losses.

Paris comes to town hoping to feed off the energy of the Toucan series. The short bus ride from the mountains down to the sea was welcomed by the players and the fans that follow the team. The most recent game was a bit cool by Martinique standards with 60 F being the high.

Cap Chevalier at Paris

The Artists dominated play during the three game series that was highlighted by a 21 run middle game that saw them score 20 of their runs in two innings. Berno Proust, on the bubble for the high speed train to St. Nazaire, had a huge slump breaking game that earned him player of the game award. He went 3 for 4, scored 3, and batted in 3. When you score 21 runs there are no shortage of POG candidates. Three team records were set in the one sided debacle.

In the final game of the set the Artists outhit the Waves 10 to 4 but lost the game. The 4 run first inning did in Merlin. After retiring the lead off batter he hit 2 batters, gave up a pair of singles, worked a walk in there and just like that it was 4-0 Waves. The Artists cut it to a one run game but never could catch up. They settle for 2/3.

In Nice, it was a clean sweep of the visiting Le Diamant Diamonds in three close games. This allowed the Orchids to take a one game lead in the France division. The Anse d'Arlet Sting Rays take over first in Martinique with a 2 game lead over the Diamonds and the Toucans. The Waves, at 9-22, are 9 games back.

The Soleis Series

The Artists return home to France but not to the city of Paris. They will play the Soleis in Marseille before returning home to face Le Diamant.

Julien Henri will pitch the first game of the three game set. The graphic shows that Henri fell upon hard times in the midst of back to back player of the game awards. It's hard to describe Julien as 'fallen on hard times' because he does have an ERA under 4.00 and he is batting .287.

But, when you set the bar high year after year the expectation is that you reach or exceed it, especially when you are just shy of 28.

Always a decent base stealer Julien is 0/3 in that department, so far. So, the W's are down, the ERA is up, the Power is down (1 big fly), the steals are down all making for some conversation about what kind of year Henri will experience in 1972.

Tonight we will get a glimpse of our featured star as he takes the mound in Marseille.

Julien Henri Opening game of the series

No, Henri did not pick up the W for the 6th straight start. But, lots of plusses for Julien
  • He did not lose the game
He logged 10 IP and threw 132 pitches
He walked only 1 batter while fanning 4
He hit a HR to lead off the 9th to tie the game
    He was awarded POG honors
The Artists won in 10 innings when Herve Delage ripped a double into the corner
Nice loses so Paris is now tied for first

Games 2,3 of the Soleis Series

The middle game belonged to Paris until the middle innings. A 5-1 lead evaporated as the Marseille line up came to life. Mickael Pinon, SS, had a pair of hits and 6 rbi's for the Soleis. It was the Artist bullpen, currently ranked 8th in the league, that surrendered the bulk of the damage.

Paris specifically targeted the pen for improvement as the signing of CL Gerard Gallet was the move to solidify the late inning relief situations. While that actually has happened (Gallet has 5 saves and an 0.59 ERA), its the set up and middle relief that is falling flat. Clement Marchand, 24 years old and pitching lights out for the AAA Orioles, can only wonder when the call will come to bring him to the FBL major league level.

In game 3 Julien Henri had a double, single, and walk driving in three runs. Lamy batted in three runs in spot behind Julien giving the Artists a relatively comfortable 8-5 win. But, the pen made it interesting as they surrendered one in the 8th, three in the 9th, and had the tying run at the plate before a twin killing gave Paris the win.

With the series win the Artists are still tied with the Nice Orchids as SP Herve Villard got the W in the third game of the Expedition series to salvage one win. The Orchids and Artists have the best record in the FBL, 20-13.

Corentin Bertrand

The graphic below depicts how often Bertrand shows up on the batting leader board, not just as a leader of a category, but as someone who is pushing to lead in other categories.

He is part of what is fueling the turnaround in Le Morne Rouge. The 7th overall pick in the 1968 is turning heads throughout the league. Just 25 he is on pace for some remarkable numbers at the dish. His +2.1 ZR in the outfield speaks to being more than just a hitter.
